PRODUCT ALERT: Superiore State-of-the-Art Mascara by Borghese

It's Friday night and time to break out those lashes! Peachy Deegan recommends Borghese's Superiore State-of-the-Art Mascara.

The thickening mascara, is quite "Superiore." Infused with a built-in, silk-powder foundation for superior wear, delicate lashes are coddled in natural conditioners while providing smudge-proof, flake-proof coverage. This product is suitable for contact lens wearers like Peachy Deegan and sensitive eyes.

What we like about this product at Whom You Know:
* Hydrolyzed Silk Powder Foundation provides extended wear.
* Lengthens, separates and curls lashes without clumping.
* Acqua di Vita® Complex, vitamins and protein add nourishing moisture and conditioners to lashes.

To use this, apply from base of lash to tip and of course you KNOW this, but to ensure continued purity, cap tightly and do not dilute. Bat those lashes, Whom You Know readers!

PRODUCT ALERT: DKNYMEN

This season, DKNY launched DKNYMEN, a fresh new fragrance for Men-and what could be better for our men readers of Whom You Know than a fabulous new fragrance named after the city that we are dedicated to!

The scent is brand new and conveys strength and power, the kind which can only be found in Manhattan. The energy of DKNYMEN is as iconic as the Manhattan skyline and remind Peachy Deegan of a Little Red Corvette speeding down Fifth Avenue with fast, spicy notes of white pepper and cardamom mixed with lavender, jasmine, sandalwood, cedarwood and patchouli. Intense, intriguing and irresistable, DKNYMEN is a beacon of modern power.

Inspired by the Flatiron building, the bottle (shown above) is bold and evocative and its architecture will enhance the essence of the man wearing it.

Whom You Know declares DKNYMEN a must-have for the fragrance collection of today's Manhattan Male Whom You Know reader, and it is more for the classy, streetsmart, goal-oriented guy than the cliched metrosexual. Which is why we think it is perfect!

Founded in 1990, DKNY was created by Donna Karan to be the streetside of her luxe collection.

Peachy participated in the National Park Service Ranger-led walking tour of the historic district on Governors Island prior to the island’s official opening on May 30. The 1.5-mile tour lasted approximately 90 minutes and visited all the significant sites on the island ranging from the historic fortifications Castle Williams and Fort Jay to the much later barracks building Liggett Hall to houses of worship and the officers housing among others.

About Governors Island National Monument

Governors Island National Monument was established to preserve the island’s historically significant military fortifications, Castle Williams and Fort Jay. Governors Island is a 172-acre island, of which the National Park Service administers the 22-acre Governors Island National Monument. Gotham Gadgets: The Spring Loaded Insoles by Hammacher Schlemmer

If you have a pair of feet, you need a pair of these! Here at Whom You Know we are dedicated to fabulous footwear, as seen in Shoe of the Week for both women and men, and we are also dedicated to comfort! With these fabulous Hammacher Schlemmer Spring Loaded Insoles you will have happy feet!

Peachy Deegan says they are the absolute best insoles she has EVER had. Designed to be worn in dress shoes, these insoles have six springs in the heel that return some of the energy of the downward footfall back up to the body for a "push off" with every stride. Whom You Know is equally pleased with both the men's and women's version, both of which were tested by us. Skiers will particularly like them as the insoles adapt the ski boot footbed concept to everyday shoe wear. The foot slides around much less in the shoe, and there is particularly good support for the balls of the feet. Additionally, they are easy to move from shoe to shoe.

Many foot and ankle ailments stem from the impact of the body's weight while walking, which is why the coils are positioned directly underneath the heel. The suspension coils are only 1/4" thick, making them undetectable until a step is taken. The springs will never wear down or lose their shock-absorbing capability. The insole has a honeycomb padding with valves that draw in and expel air during walking for constant circulation to keep the shoe dry. EVA padding in the forefoot cushions and supports the foot. You will be able to walk for miles and miles in Manhattan with the comfort of the Spring Loaded Insoles by Hammacher Schlemmer. Whom You Know LOVES them!

They are available in:
Men's sizes S (4-6), M (7-8), L (9-10), or XL (11-13); Women's sizes S (5 1/2-7 1/2), M (8-9 1/2), L (10-11 1/2), XL (12-13 1/2).

To make your piggies happy and the rest of your feet too, find them under:

Crystal Candy - National Gemstone of U.S. to Highlight Sale of Natural History

Bonhams will hold its spring auction of Natural History on June 1, 2009. The 525 lot sale offers a diverse group of high quality and distinctive mineral specimens, gold nuggets, lapidary works of art, gemstones and jewelry in addition to exceptional fossils.

Chosen to highlight the auction with a featured section of over 50 lots is the semi-precious stone tourmaline. Selected for its colorful, fresh spring-like qualities, the mineral derives its name from the Sinhalese word "turamali" and is distinguished by its three-sided prisms. Tourmaline can be found in Russia, Brazil, Madagascar, Mozambique, Afghanistan and San Diego County, California. Highly coveted by collectors, the stone is available in a wide variety of hues from across the color spectrum including green, red, yellow, candy pink, black and blue. Many shades of tourmaline are featured throughout the auction as examples of polished and unpolished minerals, unmounted stones and jewelry.

According to Claudia Florian G.J.G., Co-Consulting Director, Natural History “Interest in tourmaline among collectors has grown exponentially in the past several years. Made popular by its hardness level, it is the perfect stone for daily wear in the form of jewelry. Blue tourmalines, such as those examples featured in the June auction, are extremely rare and highly sought after by the public. Tourmaline is also the national gemstone of the United States, due to the once abundant deposits of pink stone in San Diego County, California.”

Leading the tourmaline offerings is a multi-color suite of jewelry comprised of 59 tiny, intricately hand-carved flowers by German lapidary master Manfred Wild (est. $28,000-35,000). Consisting of a necklace and pair of earrings, the ensemble is composed of a variety of tourmalines from several world localities. Done in hues of hot pink, red, yellow orange, bi-color, green and the highly sought after blue, each individual flower centers on a small white pearl to provide a natural look and elegant feel.

Known for his virtuoso work in rare, precious and semi-precious materials, Wild is one of the world’s most famous creators of objets d’ art. His vocabulary of carving and design excellence includes perfume bottles, animals, whimsical figures, flower studies and enameled eggs with concealed ‘surprises’ as well as objets de fantaisie.

Additional hand-carved tourmaline pieces created by Wild on offer in the spring auction include a transparent green Brazilian box trimmed in 18 karat gold (est. $15,000-18,000); a multi-color and sterling silver presentation box fitted with a rare Liddicoatite slice from Madagascar displaying brilliant concentric banding in red, candy pink, green and black (est. $12,000-15,000); a finely detailed, intensely pink Madagascar tourmaline carving of a mouse (est. $4,500-5,500) and an unusual bi-color pink and green tourmaline and 18K gold miniature sculpture of a grasshopper (est. $3,500-4,500).

The auction will also feature a group of carvings by another renowned Idar-Oberstein artist, Gerd Dreher. Notable highlights include a fish created from a massive slab of Madagascar tourmaline (est. $9,000-12,000) and a pair of dolphins made from nearly 6,000 carats of aquamarine (est. $25,000-35,000). Imaginative young designers, Syliva and Luis Quispe, also trained in Idar-Oberstein, Germany have produced an opulent hand-carved marine life chess set made of ruby and lapis lazuli trimmed with 18K gold and accompanied by an illuminated rock crystal and obsidian chess board (est. 90,000-110,000) which will also be featured during the June 1st sale.

The jewelry section of the auction boasts a massive 99-carat carved black opal and diamond pendant from the world renowned locality of Lightning Ridge, Australia. Dubbed “Aqua Profonda” by designer Jenni Brammall, the piece was created specifically for use during the Australian Masters of Fashion Awards 2008 in Melbourne, Australia, and stage worn by several models throughout the premier fashion design competition (est. $50,000-60,000).

Items for women by well-known jeweler Robert Wander will also be included. Wander is the originator of the term “Crystal Candy” and his line consists of brilliantly colored gems which are often left unpolished to showcase the natural beauty of the stone. Found at upscale department stores throughout the United States, several of Wander’s spectacular pieces have been selected for this auction to illustrate the tourmaline theme (estimates upon request). Also featured are several pieces of signed jewelry for men including a wonderful array of cufflinks made available to the public just in time for Father’s Day.

Auction: June 1, 2009 at 1:00pm, Bonhams New York
Preview: Friday-Sunday, May 29-31, 2009, Bonhams New York

Eat, Drink and Be Healthy: Cleansing

Question from Whom You Know:

What are good ways of doing "cleansing"?

Answer from our expert, Karim Fugel, CHHC, Reiki Practitioner, CST:

When cleansing it is important to be sure you have enough protein. After 72 hours without protein, your body begins to digest it's own muscle to compensate. Many cleanses sold over the counter are dangerous for that reason. At jf gymnastique, Dr. Portera and I offer cleanses supported by medical foods so optimal levels of macro and micro nutrients are maintained in your system while allowing the body to release built-up toxins. (Our jump start cleanse package is a 4 day cleanse.)

Karim is a Holistic Health Counselor specializing in nutritional guidance. She is certified by Teachers College Columbia University in partnership with the Institute for Integrative Nutrition as well as the American Association of Drugless Practitioners. Karim has received a certificate in Food Therapy from The Natural Gourmet Institute for Food and Health. She is currently pursuing her Masters Degree in Holistic Nutrition from Clayton College of Natural Health.

BIG APPLE BUSINESS: F.M. Allen

Here at Whom You Know we obsess about finding the best of everything in Manhattan for you and we adore the classics while we embrace the trends of the season that make sense.

F.M. Allen is an example of this! If you are a dedicated Whom You Know reader, you know Peachy Deegan supports great education, and is thus in love with her alma maters, which is how she learned of this fabulous little shop on Madison Avenue-someone from another prep school is involved in it.

F.M. Allen is a classy shop- but we know, especially since trendsetter and Mover and Shaker Courtney Moss (another who prepped herself) alerted us months ago that the safari look is so IN this season.

The company began life in 1947 when F.M. "Bunny" Allen moved from his native England to Kenya and began his professional hunter/safari guide service. Allen was one of the last great gentlemen hunters of Africa, and led safaris for everyone from Prince Aly Khan to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales to Mick Jagger. He is responsible for guiding the largest luxury safari of all time, leading a cast and crew of 500+ for John Ford's 1953 masterpiece "Mgambo."

In 2003, Tee Faircloth revived the company and brought it to the United States. Today, F.M. ALLEN is a retailer of men's clothing, accessories and unique gifts. They stay true to their outfitter heritage, but the product offering has expanded to include a full line of English-inspired clothing and accoutrements. F.M. Allen aims to take the very best of classic design and construction and, when called for, add a touch of contemporary advancement, offering items are made by artisans where true craftsmanship and the attention to the most minute of detail is of utmost importance.

The company's design headquarters and flagship retail store are located on Main Street in historic downtown Franklin, Tenn., just outside of Nashville, but Whom You Know loves its retail store at 962 Madison Avenue (between 75th & 76th streets) on Manhattan's Upper East Side. Take a look and tell them Peachy Deegan sent you!

H&M Announces Another Star Studded Roster for Fashion Against AIDS 2009

For the second year in a row, H&M and Designers Against AIDS (DAA) team up with some of the biggest celebrities from the world of fashion, music and entertainment. The Fashion Against AIDS apparel campaign works to fight the disease and raise awareness among young people. Artists such as Estelle, N.E.R.D, Katy Perry, Dita von Teese, and Yoko Ono worked with H&M to design t-shirts, t-shirt dresses, tank tops and bodysuits. Twenty five percent of the campaign sales will be donated to HIV/AIDS youth awareness projects. This special 100 percent organic cotton collection launches for guys and girls in H&M DIVIDED departments beginning June 2009.

“The collection has a 1980s feel with mixtures of white, bright and graffiti-like prints. Girls can wear them with short skirts or worn denim with big accessories to complete the look. Boys can match the t-shirts with colored denim or rolled-up chinos complimenting the 80s aesthetic” says Ann-Sofie Johansson, H&M Head of Design. “The fight against AIDS has always been one of our priorities, and H&M is overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and commitment from each and every celebrity involved in this collection."

“H&M and Fashion Against AIDS are very important to us. We could never reach an audience of so many young people on our own,” explains Ninette Murk, founder, Designers Against AIDS. “AIDS is still a significant issue. People establish an attitude towards their sex lives at a very young age, so it's very important for them to realize how crucial safe sex is, as early as possible.”

For the 2009 Fashion Against AIDS collection, the message is loud and clear with bold language and vibrant colors. Roisin Murphy’s t-shirt is bold with the phrase “Protection is power” on the front and back of a men’s t-shirt and a women’s bodysuit. N.E.R.D uses a clever graphic to shout “use your brain” on vibrant tank tops and t-shirts for both men and women. Estelle designed a tank top with the slogan “LIFE IS TOO SHORT – HAVE SEX BE SAFE” next to a sassy silhouette of an empowered woman. Katy Perry’s clever safe sex message, “WHAT’S ON THE OUTSIDE IS WHAT COUNTS,” appears on both a bodysuit and a cap-sleeved shirt. In a nostalgic nod to her roots, “GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE SAFE SEX” is scribbled in pink lipstick on Cyndi Lauper’s t-shirt. Others include Yoko Ono’s design of the words “IMAGINE PEACE” in multiple languages and Robyn’s feisty “PROTECT YOUR BODY.” Dita von Teese, an avid supporter of AIDS causes, created an alluring image of her iconic red lips and arched brow on a cute cap-sleeved T.

"It is really great that H&M continues to educate its customers and the world about HIV/AIDS with their campaign Fashion Against AIDS. We must never give up the fight against this horrible disease and we must constantly remind each other not to become apathetic or careless. The war on HIV/AIDS must continue."

In the United States alone, over a million people were living with HIV by the end of 2008. What is particularly worrisome is that an estimated 250,000 of these individuals were unaware of their HIV positive status. Each new generation needs to be made aware of AIDS to prevent further spread of the disease. With HIV and AIDS, complacency is not an option.

This is the second year that H&M has teamed up with the charitable organization Designers Against AIDS to disseminate the safe sex message to young people. Last year’s campaign was a stunning success, with over SEK 15 million donated to HIV/AIDS prevention projects. This year's beneficiaries are Designers Against AIDS, YouthAIDS, UNFPA and MTV Staying Alive Foundation.

Peachy Deegan interviewed Tiffany Koury for Whom You Know.

Peachy Deegan: When did you realize you wanted to be a designer?
Tiffany Koury: When I was fourteen, my fashion design teacher recognized me as a prodigy. She highly encouraged me to enroll in a summer program for high school students at The Fashion Institute of Technology when I was sixteen. Once I spent that summer in NYC, I knew this was the career choice for me.

What is your favorite piece that you have designed?
I would have to say my Lucille and Vivien gowns. They each have such a timeless glamour to them with very intricate and stunning details.

Which experience working for others in fashion shaped you the most before you went out on your own and why?
I always knew I wanted to launch my own label, and working for others allowed me to gain the knowledge in order to venture out on my own. After working at Nautica in men's wovens for four years I knew it was time to branch out.

How would you describe your styles to someone that has not seen them before?
My styles are romantic and inspired by the early Hollywood sirens! Lace, silk, and pearls are favorites of mine that I consistently work into my designs. I want to make women feel like they are glowing at all times of the day or night. My grandmother was truly the one who influenced my style. She was always dressed in timeless silhouettes. This inspired me to launch a collection that is reminiscent to her style and to the style of the early Hollywood bombshells.

Are all of your items bespoke?
Currently, I am approaching my business similar to that of Charles James. Therefore, I stick to custom pieces as I like to establish relationships with my clients. I find this very fulfilling, yet playful as well. My motto is, "Come and play dress up with TK."

What kind of dresses are the most challenging to design?
I love working on the bias as Vionnet was famous for. However, it can be tremendously difficult at times due to the draping involved.

What bathing suits are hottest for 2009?
I would have to say my retro suits trimmed with tonal lace and Swarovski crystals or pearls. My favorite style this season is the bombshell booty short with ruching and lace ties. This is such a flattering style for everyone. I also favor Deep V one-pieces this year in classic cuts from the 1950's.

What is your favorite place to be in NYC?
At home with my fabulous fiancé Marten Kayle and our two precious Shih Tzu's, Axl Rose and Cody.

What is your favorite shop?
Barney's and Bergdorf's are at the top of my list mainly because of the extensive selection of immaculate brands, but I most often prefer to wear TK.

What is your favorite drink?
Rose Champagne

What is your favorite restaurant?
Daniel

What is your favorite NYC book?
The Bombshell Manual of Style

What is your favorite thing to do in NYC that you can do nowhere else?
Visiting the museums here of course!

What do you think is most underrated and overrated here?
The most underrated is taking a horse drawn carriage in Central Park. The most overrated are Broadway musical shows!

What else should Whom You Know readers know about you?
It is my goal to make women feel confident and beautiful with what they wear, and I will always strive to bring out the inner bombshell in every woman through my work.

How would you like to be contacted by Whom You Know readers?
via email at info@tiffanykoury.com

May 27 SELSELEH / ZELZELEH: MOVERS & SHAKERS IN CONTEMPORARY IRANIAN ART

SELSELEH / ZELZELEH:

MOVERS & SHAKERS IN CONTEMPORARY IRANIAN ART

May 28 – August 20, 2009

Opening Reception: May 27, 6 to 8 p.m.

The Leila Taghinia-Milani Heller (LTMH) Gallery is presenting a group exhibition, Selseleh/Zelzeleh: Movers & Shakers in Contemporary Iranian Art, from May 28 through August 20, 2009. Comprising more than 50 seminal works from as many as 40 artists, Selseleh/Zelzeleh (loosely translated as Tradition/Tremor) seeks to illuminate the depth and richness of Iranian art from the post WWII generation to the present. A number of works, including paintings, sculpture, photography, works on paper, and video will be on view for the first time in the U.S. A fully-illustrated color catalogue will accompany the exhibition. Selseleh/Zelzeleh: Movers & Shakers in Contemporary Iranian Art, opening with a reception on May 27 from 6 to 8 p.m., coincides with the Chelsea Art Museum’s summer exhibition, Iran Inside Out, June 26-September 5, 2009, an exploration of the new Persian avant-garde.

The featured artists in Selseleh/Zelzeleh – some living in Iran, some living internationally – are all Iranian or of Iranian descent and share a common ground due to their rich culture and heritage. Alongside the most celebrated Persian artists such as Shirin Neshat, Y.Z. Kami, Reza Derakshani, Pouran Jinchi, Roya Akhavan, Farhad Moshiri, Farideh Lashai and Shoja Azari, the show is introducing newcomers including Mehdi Farhadian, Negar Ahkami, Shiva Ahmadi, Darius Yektai, and Bita Fayyazi. Affirming a continuous dialogue that exists between the generations, these artists explore a multiplicity of divergences from the past that are equally grounded in a respect for cultural continuity as well as in the freshness of youthful innovation. While borrowing from tradition, they have developed their own highly unique artistic language resulting in work that is bold, emotionally charged, and, at times, politically and socially motivated.

Among the highlights of Selseleh/Zelzeleh: Movers & Shakers in Contemporary Iranian Art is Iranian-born, New York-based artist Pouran Jinchi’s, Forough #3, 2008. A mix of Near Eastern calligraphy and abstract expressionism, her paintings, rife with intricate patterning, complex markings and subtle traceries, are meditative and holistic in nature. The literary origins of her art reflect her strong feeling for poetry, as she explores her Persian heritage and renders it contemporary.

Since 2006, Shoja Azari and Shahram Karimi have been collaborating on “video paintings,” a new form which examines stasis and movement at the juxtaposition of video and painting. What Remains (from the Oil Paintings Series), 2009, is a work that combines a video by Shoja Azari projected onto a painting by Shahram Karimi. Haunting and apocalyptic, the team’s seven-piece series of was inspired by searing images of the Kuwaiti oil fields that were set aflame in 1991 during the withdraw of the Iraqi army in the Persian Gulf War.

Grappling in form and content with the contradiction between beauty and brutality, Negar Ahkami’s painting, Herat II, 2009, depicts prostrating female nudes on a serpentine red carpet that leads to a mosque-like building. Through her work, she explores the contradiction between traditional Persian art and the menacing contemporary image that the West has of Iran.

Using each image as a tool to express her political agenda, Shiva Ahmadi’s visual language consists of symbolism, Middle Eastern patterns and Islamic architecture. Rendered in jewel-tone watercolors, Rocks, 2009, endeavors to show the instability and complexity in Middle Eastern cultures as they move toward modernity. Born in Tehran, Ahmadi was educated in Iran and the United States.

Selseleh/Zelzeleh: Movers & Shakers in Contemporary Iranian Art is the second exhibition co-curated by Dr. Layla Diba and Leila Heller, two leading authorities in the field. The opening reception on May 27 will also feature a book signing for “Different Sames: New Perspectives in Contemporary Iranian Art,” edited by Hossein Amirsadeghi.

Where to get your Whites the Whitest in Manhattan: Jeeves!

Peachy Deegan has been recommending Jeeves all along on Whom You Know-here is the latest from Whom You Know's Mover and Shaker, Jerry Pozniak of Jeeves:

Memorial Day signals the start of the summer wardrobe season. By now
the soft wools and cashmere have been stored for the season.

While pastels and linens may dominate, there is nothing like crisp
white to off-set the bronzing effects of the sun.

When soiled your whites will need attention. Sent to the dry cleaner
they should remain well, white. Too often whites do not remain white
after a “cleaning”. Why?

Not to get overly technical, but the solution used in dry cleaning
must remain clean. At our shop anything less than “gin” clear is not
acceptable.

After every load of dry cleaning the cleaning solution must be
filtered and distilled. Why do I sound like a Scotch ad?

Dry cleaners looking to cut costs can easily skip this step as it is
costly to distill after every load.

After just one use without distillation the dry cleaning solution can
take on the color of iced tea. Anything white cleaned in dirty dry
cleaning solution will come out “gray”. (Imagine taking a bath in
water used by 10 people before you. Yuck.)

Cheap dry cleaning is not the bargain you think you may be getting. A
dry cleaner who “cuts corners” will eventually harm your wardrobe; and
that is not saving money, it’s wasting money.

As in everything in life, you get what you pay for. If you want your
whites to stay “white”, find a great dry cleaner.

Jeeves of Belgravia, on New York's Upper East Side specializes in
keeping white, "white.

Thanks for listening. Jerry Pozniak

Petite Peachy LOVES FIREFLY BOPPIN’ BARNYARD MUSICAL TIMER TOOTHBRUSH BY DR. FRESH

FIREFLY BOPPIN’ BARNYARD MUSICAL TIMER TOOTHBRUSH BY DR. FRESH

Peachy Deegan's sidekick, Petite Peachy, is not so wild about brushing her teeth. However, she has a new attitude where music is involved with this activity!

There’s a “note-able” new addition to Dr. Fresh’s stable of innovative oral care products -- the FireFly® Boppin’ Barnyard Musical Timer Toothbrush. Kids tend to tune out nagging, but they’ll be all ears – and all smiles – for a whimsical chorus of oinks, moos, and quacks to keep them company while brushing.

This cute innovation plays “Old MacDonald” for one minute (the length of time each row of teeth needs to be brushed) when the button in its handle is pressed. Kids brush until the music stops, then activate the song again to brush the second row of teeth. It was developed for ages 3 and up with an ergonomic design appropriate for a child’s small hand.

Dentists recommend toothbrushes be replaced every three months; FireFly Boppin Barnyard Musical Toothbrush stops playing its song after that time as a reminder to get a new toothbrush. It is available at CVS and Walgreens in Manhattan for $2.49.

Not only can you drink the best tea in Manhattan at Salon Tea, but you can also buy fabulous music there! Tracy Stern, a Mover and Shaker on Whom You Know, has come out with her first CD: Tea Party Music for the 21st century. It is a beautiful compilation of upbeat, exotic songs that match every flavor of tea she offers.

Twelve selections, all from different artists, comprise the catchy ambiance-setting cd including Madeline Peyroux's "J'ai Deux Amours," Nat King Cole's "L.O.V.E. (French version), and "Billionaire 117" by Brisa Roche are among Peachy Deegan's favorites.

Even though it is May and we are in New York, Ella Fitzgerald's "April in Paris" is sure to soothe your ears while your tea does the same to your tastebuds and the last song, "Tous Les Jours" by Saint Privat will complete your celebration.

Included in the cd jacket is Tracy Stern's scone recipe.

Tyrant Lizard on the Auction Block Rare Dinosaur Skull to be Offered on June 1 in New York

From the scientific to the superbly decorative, astoundingly unique fossil specimens will be offered by international fine arts auctioneers Bonhams on June 1, 2007 during the firm’s Natural History auction in New York. The 525 lot sale offers a diverse group of high quality and distinctive mineral specimens, gold nuggets, lapidary works of art, gemstones and jewelry as well as exceptional fossils from prestigious collections around the world.

Leading the auction is a rare tyrannosaurid skull – one of only three or four Alioramus skulls to have been discovered (est. $120,000 - 140,000). Known as the ‘Tyrant Lizard from the Age of Dinosaurs,’ this rare specimen from the Late Cretaceous period was found in the Nemegt Formation, Gobi Desert, Central Asia. Although very little is known about this rare tyrannosaurid, Alioramus is smaller and more slender than its famous cousin the T-Rex, and boasts a higher tooth count. This animal was most likely a very swift hunter with the ability to be faster and more agile than many of its contemporaries. The present skull specimen is from an individual which would have measured over 20-feet in length and impressively displays the 76 serrated, knife-like teeth.

Also featured in the June auction is a well-documented Triceratops skull (pictured, left) from the Hell Creek Formation, North Dakota (est. $100,000 - 125,000). Unquestionably one of the most popular dinosaurs, Triceratops lived over 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous Period. The dinosaur is famous for its iconic three horns and large bony frill profile. Along with giving this creature lasting celebrity, the external defenses undoubtedly helped to protect the animal from its predatory contemporaries, such as T. Rex. The present skull specimen is beautifully preserved and exemplifies the famed behemoth of the ‘Age of Dinosaurs’.

A Large Jurassic Ichthyosaur specimen -- highly sought after by collectors-- will also be offered at auction this summer (est. $60,000 - 80,000). From the famous Holzmaden quarries, the Ichthyosaur is believed to have filled a similar ecological niche as today’s dolphin. Of all known reptiles, they were best adapted to a marine existence. A fine example of this fascinating inhabitant of the Jurassic seas, the present specimen displays expert preparation with all four flippers visible. The skeleton is virtually complete and displayed in an attractive lateral presentation.

The décor section of the sale will feature two monumental halves of an entire petrified wood tree aptly dubbed ‘The Twins’ (est. $125,000 - 150,000). From the Triassic period, the magnificent offering was discovered at the Chinle Formation, Northern Arizona. Staggering to the imagination is the number of hours and the degree of expertise required to remove, split and polish this ancient treasure which is evidenced by the mighty presence of the unique pair. The cut faces display brilliant red hues, earth tones, cream and black, augmented by a fine polish. Each petrified wood log measures approximately 8-feet tall.

Also featured amongst the strong selection of items suited to interior design is a collection of very important petrified wood slabs artfully inlayed with ancient fossilized wood and suitable for use as a tabletop or bench; works in polished quartz and citrine on illuminated bases as well as a diverse selection of framed and unframed fossilized items from the world famous Green River Formation.

Additional highlights will include an uncommon Alaskan Mammoth Tusk of impressive size (est. $20,000 - 25,000); ‘The Dragon’s Head’ (pictured, right), a zoomorphic gold nugget from Victoria, Australia weighing nearly two troy pounds (est. $35,000 - 45,000); a hand-sized gold nugget boasting a rich, buttery patina (est. $28,000 - 35,000); a baby snapping turtle from a distinguished private collection (est. $10,000-12,500) and the ultimate prize for the serious meteorite collector, a group of three Martian meteorites (est. $2,500 - 3,500).

Bonhams & Butterfields Natural History auctions are the largest of their kind, both in terms of number of lots and overall estimated value. The June 1st auction will include more than 500 lots and feature a diverse group of high quality and distinctive mineral specimens, gold nuggets, lapidary works of art, gemstones and jewelry in addition to exceptional fossils as well as numerous items of unique décor in the form of wall art and sculpture.

The illustrated catalogue is available online for review and purchase at

Afghanistan's Dazzling National Treasures—Hidden for 25 Years—Presented at Metropolitan Museum

Afghanistan's Dazzling National Treasures—Hidden for 25 Years—Presented at Metropolitan Museum

* Exhibition dates: June 23–September 20, 2009
* Exhibition location: Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Exhibition Hall
* Press preview: Monday, June 15, 10:00 a.m.–noon

Ancient Afghanistan—located at the crossroads of major trade routes, where it attracted invading armies and nomadic migrations—was home to some of the most complex, rich, and original civilizations on the continent of Asia. Opening at The Metropolitan Museum of Art this summer, the traveling exhibition Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures from the National Museum, Kabul, celebrates the country's unique role, as both the recipient of diverse cultural elements and the creator of distinctive styles of art from the Bronze Age into the Kushan period. The presentation also commemorates the heroic rescue of Afghanistan's national treasures long thought to have been destroyed. The exhibition features a rich selection of artworks from four archaeological sites. All works belong to the National Museum of Afghanistan in Kabul. Highlights include gold vessels from the Bronze Age Tepe Fullol hoard; superb works and architectural elements from the Hellenistic city of Aï Khanum; sculptural masterpieces in ivory, plaster medallions, bronzes, and Roman glass from Begram; and extraordinary turquoise-encrusted gold jewelry and ornaments from the nomadic tombs at Tillya Tepe.

The exhibition is made possible in part by Raymond and Beverly Sackler and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The exhibition was organized by the National Geographic Society and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, in association with The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

It is supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.

In 1978, archaeologists digging at the ancient site of Tillya Tepe in northern Afghanistan made an unprecedented and unexpected discovery: tombs of ancient nomads that had not been disturbed for two thousand years. Buried there were a nomadic chieftain and five women wearing sumptuous adornments such as swords, crowns, and clothing covered with tiny gold appliqués. When the country descended into war shortly after the find, the so-called Bactrian Hoard disappeared and was believed to be lost forever. In 2003, the world was stunned to learn that the priceless artifacts had been located intact in a bank vault within the presidential palace in Kabul. A heroic group of Afghans who have come to be called the "key holders" kept the location of these treasures—along with other masterpieces belonging to the National Museum, Kabul—a secret through 25 tumultuous, war-torn years.

"As we look at these fragile and delicately wrought works of art, we cannot help but be amazed at their survival from antiquity to the present time," commented Thomas P. Campbell, Director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. "And as we learn the dramatic story of their fate over the last 25 years, our appreciation for them can only deepen. We are honored to present these beautiful treasures at The Metropolitan Museum of Art—their final US stop on a three-year-long worldwide tour."

Speaking about the exhibition, His Excellency Said Tayeb Jawad, Ambassador of Afghanistan to the United States, remarked: "Afghanistan has always been the heart of Asia. Afghanistan's centrality in the Silk Road created a rich mosaic of cultures and civilizations. Although this mosaic was shattered by war and terror, both the spirit of the Afghan people and our cultural heritage survived. These priceless artifacts are a testament to the Afghan people and to the heroism of the brave and selfless Afghans who preserved and protected them. This exhibition is a celebration of Afghanistan as much as it is an expression of our appreciation for the global partnership between our ancient nation, the international community, and our friends in the United States."

Fredrik Hiebert, exhibition curator and National Geographic Archaeology Fellow, continued: "This exhibition is the culmination of many years of work by the Afghans. Without their courage and commitment, these objects would not exist today. Having worked closely with Afghan officials since 2003 on the preservation and inventory of the objects, I am honored to be part of the effort to share these treasures with audiences in the United States and ultimately to enhance the understanding of Afghanistan's rich cultural heritage."

Exhibition Overview
The exhibition is arranged by archaeological site and features new maps and media specially commissioned by the National Geographic Society. The display begins with objects from Tepe Fullol in northern Afghanistan. In 1966, farmers discovered the first evidence of a Bronze Age civilization in the region. The nearby Oxus riverbed may have provided the gold used to create the artifacts found in a burial cache at the site. A highlight is a gold bowl fragment dating around 2000 B.C., depicting bearded bulls, an image familiar in the art of Mesopotamia.

The second section focuses on Aï Khanum, one of the largest Greek-style cities founded in a region of Asia that had been conquered by Alexander the Great. Several buildings—a theater and gymnasium built in the Greek style—bear witness to the city's Greek origins, as do scientific instruments such as sundials. Works from the site show the Mediterranean influence in the area between the fourth and second centuries B.C. Sculptures and other objects from this site include a stone portrait of the Gymnasium director, a bronze image of Herakles, and a gilded silver plaque with the goddess Cybele, exhibiting a mixture of Greek and Near Eastern imagery .

The excavations at Begram, the third site, yielded works dating from between the first and second centuries A.D. Among the contents of two sealed rooms were remarkable luxury goods, including more than 180 Roman glass vessels and spectacular ivories carved in an Indian style, which are among the earliest preserved works of their kind. They depict women and children in domestic settings, as well as Indianized motifs such as the makara, a crocodile-like creature. These works shed light on the role of Afghanistan in the exchanges between East and West along the legendary Silk Road.

The fourth section of the exhibition focuses on Tillya Tepe and includes impressive inlaid gold objects found in the six nomadic tombs that were unearthed there. The individuals buried in the tombs belonged to the same group of nomadic peoples who first overran Bactria around 145 B.C. and brought an end to the Graeco-Bactrian kingdoms that had flourished in the region. The tombs of a chieftain and five women contained different kinds and quantities of objects, which may reflect their relative status. Dating from the first century A.D., the works include an exquisite crown and other luxury objects, most made of solid gold and many encrusted with turquoise and garnets. Although it is not known where the gold originated, the turquoise is probably from northeastern Iran and the other semiprecious stones may have been obtained from more distant regions through trade. The adornments found at the site display a fascinating blend of nomadic, Greek, Indian, and Chinese imagery. In addition, the closest parallels for the typically nomadic gold crown worn by the one of the women are found much later in fifth and sixth century A.D. tombs of the Silla Kingdom in Korea. Tillya Tepe thus raises compelling questions about the geographic and temporal span of nomadic traditions in Asia.

Also included in the exhibition is a 13-minute film, narrated by Afghan American author, Khaled Hosseini, and produced by National Geographic, which tells of the original discovery and excavation of these collections and their dramatic rediscovery in 2003.

The fresh flavor, in season right now, is one you cannot miss! Peachy ordered hers cooked, with herbs and it was absolutely excellent. You can also order it non-cooked. Not only is the taste the best in Manhattan, but also it is great that it is good for you as it is high in Omega-3 oils.

MOEN INTRODUCES ioDIGITAL™ – THE ULTIMATE BLEND OF TECHNOLOGY AND INDULGENCE- Peachy Deegan is excited about it!

MOEN INTRODUCES ioDIGITAL™ –
THE ULTIMATE BLEND OF TECHNOLOGY AND INDULGENCE
Innovative Technology Brings the Benefits of Personalization to the Bathroom
To Create a Truly Unique Vertical Spa, Shower or Roman Tub Experience

From U2 to Frank Sinatra… your iPod has your favorite songs personalized the way you choose, to meet your every musical desire. Your laptop? Calls up your preferred websites with the touch of a button. And your Google page? Pulls up your calendar – by day, month, year… however you choose. There’s no doubt we’re living in a digital world – but one that we can easily personalize to fit our every desire.

So, why not personalize your shower or bathing experience with a touch of technology?

Leave it to the minds at Moen, the number one faucet brand in North America, to do just that. Moen is bringing the benefits of technology to the bathroom with the launch of ioDIGITAL™. This innovative, easy-to-use interface gives consumers the ability to set and maintain water temperature and flow with electronic precision. The ioDIGITAL interface is extremely versatile and is available for three applications: vertical spa, shower and Roman tub.

“With ioDIGITAL, it’s like having your own personal digital ‘butler’ – that will set your vertical spa with the perfect temperature and flow; turn on your shower from across the room or while still in bed; or even top off your bath with hot water,” said Mark Knurek, senior product manager, Moen. “And the best part is that you can do all of this as easily as if you were programming a car radio. It’s that simple.”

The foundation of ioDIGITAL is its intelligent interface. Providing quick, visual feedback, LED indicators flash until the requested settings are achieved – no more guessing if your shower or bath is ready. Each LED on the temperature indicator represents a precise temperature range, which allows the consumer to adjust the exact temperature to their liking. Even if water is turned on in other parts of the home, ioDIGITAL will virtually eliminate any noticeable fluctuation in water temperature. The LEDs will even alert the consumer if the hot water supply happens to run low.

One of the greatest advantages of ioDIGITAL technology is the ability to program preferred settings into memory. Up to four different presets can be easily programmed within seconds, allowing every member of the family their own unique setting – from an invigorating morning shower to a relaxing evening escape, and even a child’s bedtime bath.

ioDIGITAL technology is powered by an electronic valve that manages the hot and cold water supply to precisely maintain the perfect temperature. This innovative valve can be located up to 30 feet from the tub or shower – in a linen closet, vanity, basement or under the tub – for easy installation and retrofit flexibility.

“With ioDIGITAL, Moen has established a new benchmark for showering sophistication and intelligence in the bathroom industry,” explained Knurek. “We’re truly leading the development of the digital showering genre and positioning digital as one of the hottest product sectors in the bathroom market.”

ioDIGITAL Vertical Spa

For the ultimate blend of technology and indulgence, the ioDIGITAL vertical spa offers command of precise temperature and flow, four custom presets and one-touch activation of multiple water spray outlets. The consumer can choose custom settings with a showerhead, body spray; handshower or rainshower… or choose them all.

Specific features include:

* Four programmable presets

o LCD screen which displays the current temperature, active spray outlets and preset activation
o Pause feature, which briefly interrupts the shower while the user shampoos or shaves, then returns to the previous settings
o The interface is available in Chrome, Brushed Nickel and Oil Rubbed Bronze finishes
o Optional remote control (available in Chrome or Black) offers the ability to turn the shower on from across the room or while still in bed

The ioDIGITAL vertical spa trim components are built on Moen’s revolutionary M•PACT® common valve system, which allows a homeowner to change the spa style or finish without having to change the valve. The ioDIGITAL vertical spa trim is available in a neutral design which beautifully complements any home décor.

ioDIGITAL Shower

Similar to the vertical spa functionality, the ioDIGITAL shower interface will recall a preferred temperature and flow at the push of a button, and the easy-to-read LED indicators will alert the user when the preferred shower matches the settings. No longer will homeowners have to guess if their shower has reached the right temperature – ioDIGITAL will alert them when it is ready.

Specific features include:

* Four programmable presets

o Simple dials (one for temperature/one for flow) which allow consumers to quickly and accurately set the preferred combination of temperature and flow
o Pause feature, which briefly interrupts the shower while the user shampoos or shaves, then returns to the previous setting
o The wall-mounted interface is available in Chrome, Brushed Nickel and Oil Rubbed Bronze
o Optional remote control (available in Chrome or Black) offers the ability to turn on the shower from across the room or while still in bed

ioDIGITAL Roman Tub

One of the most unique applications in the ioDIGITAL suite is the Roman tub. This revolutionary product will not only fill the tub to the perfect temperature, but even fill it to the desired level.

Specific features include:

* Three programmable presets

o Child Lock feature disables all controls and remote operation for added safety
o Interface is waterproof, allowing the user to safely install in or near the bath area
o The wall-mounted interface is available in Chrome, Brushed Nickel and Oil Rubbed Bronze finishes
o Optional remote control (available in Chrome or Black) offers the ability to turn on the tub from across the room – up to 30 feet away; or press the Hot Top Off feature to easily warm your bath by filling the tub at the lowest flow setting with the hottest water temperature

The ioDIGITAL Roman tub is compatible with a wide range of Moen’s Roman tub styles to coordinate with any decorating style.

“For decades, homeowners have trusted Moen to deliver the most reliable, durable, high-quality products,” added Knurek. “That’s the icing on the cake with ioDIGITAL – homeowners will get the benefits of innovative technology in the bath, backed by a name they can trust… Moen.”

MOVERS AND SHAKERS: Sara Blakely, Founder of Spanx

Sara Blakely wanted footless bodyshaping pantyhose to wear with her cream-colored pants and open-toed shoes, but she couldn't find them anywhere. Frustrated consumer turned entrepreneur, Sara took $5,000 in savings, invented and patented footless pantyhose, and began her adventure in the $2 billion male-dominated hosiery industry.

Two years later, with her first pair of SPANX in hand, Sara cold-called and landed the top retail stores across the country. Selling over 50,000 pair in its first three months from the back of her apartment, Sara Blakely’s SPANX revitalized an industry in a 10-year slump. Her SPANX footless pantyhose even captured the attention of Oprah and landed on Oprah’s “Favorite Things” list.

Obsessed with creating comfortable, slimming garments that minimize figure flaws, Sara reinvented shapewear with innovative designs and smart features and won the hearts of fashion-loving women, from Oprah Winfrey to Beyonce and Gwyneth Paltrow. Spanx has developed and launched more than 100 styles —with names like Bra-llelujah, Hide & Sleek, Power Panties, Slim-Cognito, and Topless Socks — all designed to be innovative, comfortable, slimming, and stylish.

If you haven’t seen Sara flashing her SPANX on QVC, you may have seen her jumping off of a cliff or sharing tea with Richard Branson 10,000 feet in the sky. Sara appeared weekly on Fox, setting daring world-records, meeting Nelson Mandela, and leading successful business challenges as a cast member on The Rebel Billionaire: Branson’s Quest for the Best. As the first runner-up on the show, Sara received a $750,000 check from Branson to pursue her dream to start a foundation to empower women on a global scale. Sara launched The Sara Blakely Foundation in 2006 and raised $600,000 to provide college scholarships for 278 young women in South Africa. Her foundation focuses on empowering women through entrepreneurship and education.

Remaining self-funded and profitable ever since Sara used her own savings to start the company, Spanx continues to show incredible growth, celebrating well over $250 million in retail sales in 2007. Spanx are sold in America’s finest upscale stores and boutiques in the U.S., including Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdales, and Parisian, as well as upscale boutiques and retailers in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K.

As the leader of the shapewear revolution, Sara wanted to find a way to share her slimming secrets with even more women. In 2006, the shapewear revolution reached new heights when Sara launched ASSETS by Sara Blakely, a new brand for Target. Sara is thrilled to give better underwear options to women everywhere – and to give back. A portion of each SPANX and ASSETS purchase goes to The Sara Blakely Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting and empowering women around the world, and other causes that support women. Visit www.SaraBlakelyFoundation.com for more information on the foundation.

Sara’s story and Spanx products have been featured on everything from The Oprah Winfrey Show, TODAY, Forbes, E!, and Glamour — to Vogue, People, InStyle, New York Times, Vanity Fair, and now as a Mover and Shaker on Whom You Know. Sara has been named Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year and “Georgia’s Woman of the Year.” Sara is a native of Clearwater, Florida, and a graduate of Florida State University.

Peachy Deegan interviewed Sara Blakely for Whom You Know.

Peachy Deegan: What is your favorite shop?
Sara Blakely: Jeffrey

What is your favorite drink?
A good glass of wine

What is your favorite NYC book?
I just received Miroslav Sasek’s book “This Is New York” for my baby. It’s full of tongue-in-cheek humor and is illustrated so beautifully; I can’t wait to read it to my baby!

Where is your favorite place to be in NYC?
Central Park. I love being outside and I think it’s important to give yourself time free of any interruptions, so I turn my phone off and let my mind wander. I do some of my best thinking here!

What is your favorite NYC restaurant?
Il Mulino

What is your favorite thing to do in NYC that you can do nowhere else?
To walk! Whether I have a destination in mind or I just wander leisurely, I always seem to discover something new that only NYC has to offer.

Whom You Know saw your new line at Saks Fifth Avenue-Spanx with a sexy twist. Can you tell us how it came about?
I created SPANX to make shapewear comfortable, and I created Haute Contour to make it beautiful. Each piece of this lingerie-inspired collection is shaping, sumptuous, and ready to be seen in!

Where is Spanx carried in Manhattan?
Spanx is carried at Saks Fifth Ave, Bloomingdales, Henri Bendel, and boutiques like La Petite Coquette.

How did you like being on the rebel billionaire?
I loved being on Rebel Billionaire. In addition to meeting two of my heros, Richard Branson and Nelson Mandela, I overcame my worst fear by scaling a hot air balloon and having tea on top with Richard Branson! I’m so thankful to him for giving me the $750,000 to start my foundation and for coming here to Atlanta to help me launch it.

How can more women become successful businesswomen?
I always encourage women entrepreneurs starting out to believe in your idea, trust your instincts, and don’t be afraid to fail. I think fear prevents so many people from pursuing their ideas. When I was younger, at the dinner table my father would ask my brother and me what we failed at, and if we didn’t have a story of something that we failed at that day, he would be disappointed. It was this great reverse psychology because we’d get excited to have a story. I’m so thankful for that, because now as an adult, I’m not afraid to fail. To me, failure is not trying, rather than not succeeding.

What future ideas do you have for Spanx?
I'm very inspired to make certain articles of clothing that I won't disclose that are in the works right now, with certain elements of Spanx hidden in them that will be fabulous. There are about three categories in apparel that we are aggressively pursuing and have been making prototypes and working on for, some of them, up to two years.

What direction do you see your Foundation headed?
We have so much more to come. Lately, we’ve been involved in President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Market Women’s Fund to help mobilize women leaders and improve issues for women all over the world. We’re currently building a house for a local Atlanta woman with Habitat for Humanity. The foundation focuses on finding the future female entrepreneurs and leaders of the world, at home and abroad, and giving them the “leg-up” they need to succeed.

What have you learned most through the evolution of Spanx?
I learned not to take no for an answer and to trust your gut. It took me two years from the time I had the idea for Spanx until the time I had a product in hand ready to sell into stores. I must have heard the word “no” a thousand times! If you believe in your idea 100%, don’t let anyone stop you!

Photography Exhibition at Metropolitan Museum Captures the Dramatic Transformation of Paris during the Rise and Fall of Napoleon III

Whom You Know just loves the Met! Photography Exhibition at Metropolitan Museum Captures the Dramatic Transformation of Paris during the Rise and Fall of Napoleon III

Exhibition Dates: June 9–September 7, 2009

Exhibition Location: The Howard Gilman Gallery

During the reign of Emperor Napoleon III, the narrow streets and medieval buildings of Paris gave way to the broad boulevards and grand public works that still define the urban landscape of the French capital. Napoleon III and Paris, on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art from June 9 through September 7, 2009, portrays the quickly changing cityscape of Second Empire Paris through a presentation of approximately 35 photographs and 10 works in other media, all drawn from the permanent collection. Spanning the period from 1851 to 1871, the installation begins with a photographic introduction to Napoleon III and his family, then traces the radical transformation of the city under the emperor and his master urban planner Baron Haussmann, and concludes with depictions of the ruins of Paris in the aftermath of the Commune. Many of the works in the installation are by the preeminent photographers of the period, including Gustave Le Gray, Charles Marville, Edouard Baldus, Louis-Émile Durandelle, Alphonse Liébert, and Pierre-Ambrose Richebourg.

The exhibition is made possible by The Hite Foundation in memory of Sybil E. Hite.

“The period in which modern Paris took shape—the 1850s and 1860s—coincides with the high point of French photography,” noted Malcolm Daniel, Curator in Charge of the Department of Photographs. “Many of the period’s greatest photographers found their most compelling subject matter literally at their doorstep in the dramatic transformation of Paris.”

The Imperial Family

The exhibition begins with an introduction to the Imperial family. Nephew of Napoleon I, Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte was elected president of the French Second Republic after the Revolution of 1848 and the abdication of King Louis-Philippe. In 1851, Louis-Napoleon staged a coup d’état and seized dictatorial powers; one year later, he dissolved the Republic and established the Second Empire, taking the title Emperor Napoleon III.

This first section of the exhibition includes portraits of Louis-Napoleon in 1852 and Empress Eugénie in 1855 by Gustave Le Gray—the central figure in French photography of the 1850s—and a touching and unique portrait of the empress and her six-year-old son by Benjamin Delessert from 1862. A sculpted bust of the emperor by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux and a painting of the empress by Franz Xaver Winterhalter, also from the collection, are featured as well.

Napoleon III’s ascension to power paralleled a dramatic flourishing of photography in France: the rise of paper photography over daguerreotypy; the development of new processes, including glass negatives; and the establishment of photographic societies, publications, and annual salons. Photographers also enjoyed direct encouragement from the emperor and his government in the form of commissions to record historic architecture and new construction, appointments as “official photographer” for the City of Paris or for specific public works, and purchases of photographs for imperial residences and municipal libraries.

Old Paris

Under Napoleon III and his prefect of the Seine, Baron Haussmann, Paris took the shape that is so familiar to us today. The grands boulevards, the limestone apartment buildings, and the public parks that form our image of Paris are largely the result of Napoleon III’s rebuilding of the capital in the 1850s and 1860s. The modern city came at a cost, however; historic buildings and whole neighborhoods were razed to make way for broad thoroughfares and grand public works. This profound transformation of the landscape of Paris provided subject matter for many of the period’s greatest photographers. Key among them was Charles Marville, official photographer to the City of Paris, who was commissioned to record the older areas of the capital that were slated for demolition. These photographs of a Paris that has long since disappeared are accompanied by contemporaneous etchings by Charles Meryon and Maxime Lalanne.

Napoleon III’s Modern Paris

Although designed in part to ease military movement through the city and to prevent revolutionaries from barricading narrow streets, Napoleon III’s urban plan was also geared toward making Paris a safer, healthier, and more modern city through the construction of new boulevards, bridges, hospitals, parks, waterworks, and sewers, and the installation of thousands of gas street lamps.

The desire of a ruler to leave his mark on the city played a role as well. The grandest of Napoleon III’s building projects was the “New Louvre,” designed to connect the Louvre and Tuileries Palaces. Edouard Baldus, the official photographer for the project, made thousands of photographs on site, ranging from documentation of every piece of ornamentation to large-format photographs of the completed pavilions. Assembled into lavish albums, Baldus’s photographs of the project were presented by the emperor to the reigning sovereigns of Europe. This section of the installation also includes Louis-Émile Durandelle’s photographs of the Paris Opera (1858–1875); views of the restoration of Notre Dame and the Tour Saint-Jacques; and images of industrial progress.

The Ruins of Paris

The Second Empire collapsed in 1870, after Napoleon III and his army suffered a swift defeat in the Franco-Prussian War. From March to May 1871 the Paris Commune, a newly established left-wing local government, battled National forces for control of the capital. A rare photograph by Pierre-Ambroise Richebourg in the exhibition shows a spy’s-eye view of barricades erected in the streets of Paris during the Commune. However, the majority of the photographs in this section—by Alphonse Liebert, Charles Soulier, Franck, and others—depict the ruins of Paris in the months after the defeat of the Commune. Along with the destruction wrought by the battling forces in the environs of Paris, the capital itself suffered from self-inflicted wounds as Communards set fire to the Paris City Hall and the Tuileries Palace, among many other government buildings, and, in an act of anti-Bonapartist symbolism, pulled down the Vendôme Column with its crowning statue of the first Emperor Napoleon.

Napoleon III and Paris is organized by Malcolm Daniel.

Educational programs presented in conjunction with the exhibition include: an evening for educators on July 24 at 4:30 p.m.; gallery talks on June 9, June 30, July 9, July 28, August 12, and August 27 at 11 a.m.; and screenings of the documentary films Understanding Cities: Paris—Living Space (Arthur Ciocco, director) and The Paris Commune: 1870 (Jean-Pierre Gallo, director) on July 14 at 2 p.m., as well as Paris: Story of a City (Stan Neumann, director) on June 18 at 2 p.m.

Princess Marcella Borghese is a woman who exemplified the finest Italian elegance and splendor. Her cosmetic line of the same name is based on the Italian ideology that a woman’s inner beauty is as important as her outer beauty. Whom You Know is pleased to kick off our coverage of Borghese!

The Princess was born in Umbria and educated in Florence. As a young woman, she dedicated herself to the arts, sports and worked with her mother on charities. She then married Prince Paolo Borghese and eventually devoted her energies to raising twin boys.

In 1956, Princess Marcella Borghese traveled to America with her husband for the very first time and stayed three months. A friendship with the late cosmetics genius, Charles Revson, gave her the inspiration to develop further the beauty secrets that she and a family chemist in Italy had developed from her mother’s secret formulas. Returning to Europe, Princess Marcella Borghese began her “cosmetic adventure” and first coordinated lip and nail colors for the fashion collections of Emilio Pucci. She returned to America with her dazzling beauty collection and before 1960 had actually created a complete range.

From the beginning, Princess Marcella Borghese wanted the women that used her products to feel pampered and luxurious – her products have always meant to be good for the body, as well as the soul. Everything – from lipstick, eyeshadow and blush to all skin treatment products – is designed with care and with thought for each individual woman. From the beginning, the packaging for every product has been as elegant as the cosmetic itself, and is meant to be a pleasure for any woman to carry.

In 1992, the Princess Marcella Borghese cosmetic range was sold from Revlon, Inc. it was purchased by private investors and is now part of Borghese, Inc. the Borghese line is growing rapidly internationally, presently with a large representation in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Hong Kong and South America.

The presence, productivity and posture of Borghese are universally acknowledged and acclaimed. The thermal baths of Montecatini have welcomed curists since 400 B.C. the Spa provides those in pursuit of renewed health and vigor a serene and elegant retreat. The philosophy that spa curists espouse and strictly adhere to is that repose and relaxation, amidst the idyll of Montecatini, enhance the psyche as well as body.

Princess Marcella Borghese has made it possible to experience Montecatini’s benefits at home. Skincare treatment products based upon the healing and rejuvenating properties of Italy’s Tuscan region’s intensive research and testing, Princess Marcella Borghese has combined these legendary resources with unique scientific ingredients to create skincare that virtually reverses the visual signs of age on the surface skin. We look forward to evaluating some of the Borghese products on Whom You Know.

Peachy Deegan has heard Melody play for over 17 years and Whom You Know knows how gifted Melody Fader is and highly recommends attendance at her performances and we are pleased to present her as a Mover and Shaker.

Peachy Deegan interviewed Melody Fader for Whom You Know.

Peachy Deegan: What is your first musical memory?
Melody Fader: Some of my earliest musical memories are of hearing my mother playing Bach Inventions on the piano. I thought she and the music were so great, and so I tried to figure out how to play it myself.

Tell Whom You Know readers how your mom was inspired to name you Melody please.
The story goes, all though her pregnancy with me, my mom thought that I was going to be a boy, and she was planning to name me Micah. But on her way to the hospital to deliver me, all of a sudden it came to her that I was going to be a girl and that my name should be Melody.

Whom You Know has heard you play for a number of years and considers you gifted. How would you define gifted?
That's a really hard question to answer. But I would say being gifted is having a real natural inclination to something that drives you to stay with it and work hard on it always. Being gifted at something is being meant to do it.

Where do you enjoy performing most?
I enjoy performing in many different types of places. Of course its great to perform at fancy venues that have really nice pianos, but I also enjoy informal and unconventional venues like bars and cafes where its more laid back.

Where would you like to perform where you have not yet performed?
Paris would be nice!

What do you consider your biggest musical accomplishment?
I think my biggest musical accomplishment is the fact that I have made music my life and never considered doing anything else. I haven't gone the conventional route, although some of what I do is conventional. Making my living as a freelance pianist is something that I am very proud of.

What are your future musical aspirations?
To keep playing and be open to where it all takes me.

What is your favorite place to be in NYC?
On the streets

What is your favorite shop?
Betsey Johnson

What is your favorite drink?
Scotch

What is your favorite restaurant?

What do you think is most underrated and overrated here?
Not sure..it all has its value

What else should Whom You Know readers know about you?
I have recently gotten very into yoga, and I am now a certified yoga instructor. Also, I am learning how to update my own website, which is a big challenge for me, but I'm excited about being able to do it myself. Check it out! www.melodyfader.com

MOVERS AND SHAKERS: Oscar Henquet, General Manager, Rouge Tomate New York

Oscar Henquet brings over twenty years in the hospitality industry to his position as General Manager of Rouge Tomate New York. His passion for personalized service will be evident through his energetic presence on the floor and his diverse and experienced team.

From the age of ten, Oscar worked odd jobs at his family’s hotels in The Netherlands, including washing cars and prepping meals in the kitchen. This early exposure instilled a life-long passion for guest service, eventually leading to his degree in Hotel Management from the Maastricht School of Hotel Management, which was founded by his grandfather and mentor.

After graduation, Oscar traveled to broaden his experience and worked in esteemed properties throughout Belgium, France, Israel and China before falling in love with New York City during his first visit. With the desire to challenge himself in the city that captivated him, Oscar left the familiar and accepted a job as Maître d’Etage, managing an entire floor of guests, at the five star, five diamond St. Regis Hotel in Manhattan. Oscar’s dedication to providing flawless, individualized experiences for guests was recognized when a position as Food & Beverage Supervisor overseeing Lespinasse, King Cole Bar and Astor Court was created specifically for him. After being promoted to Assistant Restaurant Manager, Oscar sought another opportunity to test and refine his ability in the challenging role of Room Service Manager at the five star, five diamond Four Seasons Hotel, where he also played an integral role in creating and facilitating private events. He then transitioned into restaurants, implementing the methodical strategies he learned throughout his hotel career to re-open Bouley as Restaurant Manager.

In 2003, Oscar became Director of Operations at Nicole Farhi USA, where he managed the daily food and beverage operations for five years in the space that would later house Rouge Tomate New York. During his tenure, Oscar successfully ran Nicole’s while simultaneously opening the sister property, 202 Restaurant in Chelsea Market. During this time, he developed an expertise in executing events large and small for his highly affluent and celebrity guests.

In 2008, Oscar met Rouge Tomate proprietor Emmanuel Verstraeten, whose infectious energy and precise vision convinced him he should be part of the Rouge Tomate team. At Rouge Tomate New York, Oscar marries the organization and structure of a corporate background with the character and magnetism he insists on in each member of his front-of-house staff.

Peachy Deegan interviewed Oscar Henquet for Whom You Know.

Peachy Deegan: What inspired you to enter into the hospitality industry?
Oscar Henquet: My family must have been my biggest inspiration. I come from a family that owns many different hotels and restaurants in the Netherlands, Belgium and France.
Growing up I got to know all the ins and outs about the business.

How has your grandfather impacted you and what led him to start the Maastricht School of Hotel Management?
My grandfather showed me how to be a professional in this business and a gentleman at the same time.
My great grandfather started one of the first hotels in Maastricht, almost 100 years ago. After my grandfather took over he didn’t just want to expand his business, but also believed in making the entire city and state grow. If he could make the state and the city more attractive for tourists and businesses, his business would improve as well. Educating students in business management and specifically hospitality management was part of that.

What makes your industry different in Manhattan compared to the rest of the world?
The energy and motivation that is present in this city is unparalleled. You get constantly inspired to achieve the best possible.

Where have you enjoyed working the most and why?
Rouge Tomate is an absolute dream project. It is a large restaurant, but yet so small. We are a very tight group and feel very much inspired by the owner.
The commitment we show to sustainability makes us a leader in this field. I’m very proud to be part of that.

What do you like most about your job?
The fact that so many guests appreciate and understand what we are trying to do, makes all the hard work seem very effortless.

What is your favorite place to be in NYC?
West Village

What is your favorite drink?
Queens Cup, our version of a Pimm’s Cup

What is your favorite restaurant?
Rouge Tomate

What is your favorite thing to do in NYC that you can do nowhere else?
Watch the skyline when the sun sets.

NIGHTLIGHT: MACY’S AND IZOD JOIN FORCES TO REV-UP INDYCAR SERIES

On Tuesday May 19, Peachy Deegan happily attended the event at Macy's to celebrate the Indy 500: MACY’S AND IZOD JOIN FORCES TO REV-UP INDYCAR SERIES. Macy's welcomed Legendary Drivers Al Unser, Jr. (2nd from left), Johnny Rutherford (far left) and Rick Mears (far right) along with current professional race car driver Ryan Hunter-Reay (2nd from right) to Macy’s Herald Square.

Macy’s and Izod are placing fans in the driver’s seat to celebrate the Centennial era of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indy 500 with this in-store event. The window displays as well as the in-store extravaganza were well done! Whom You Know loved it. We are pleased to expand our sports coverage at Whom You Know as well.

In honor of the 100th birthday of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, IZOD is bringing the history and excitement of the Indy 500 to the streets of New York by unveiling a museum exhibit “In Pursuit of FAST: 100 Years of Indy Racing Fashion and Design” at Macy’s Herald Square. The exhibit that will be on display from May 13th to June 3rd brings to life a century of American racing through archival elements – hundreds of original photos, logos and artwork from artists such as Leroy Neiman, vintage cars and memorabilia, and the “Borg” trophy – that visually conveys the history of the Indy 500. Race cars from every generation will be featured in the display, starting with the infamous “Baby Interstate” of 1916 to Danica Patrick’s 2002 racecar, which was the only female-driven car to ever lead a lap of the Indy 500. Peachy Deegan enjoyed meeting Danica at Macy's a couple of years ago! Whom You Know cannot wait to hear "Back Home Again in Indiana" and only wishes that Jeff Simmons was racing this year! Whom You Know is hoping to feature some of these legends as Movers and Shakers, particularly Rick Mears as he shares our love of Corvettes. Peachy Deegan saw his ZR1 being built in 1990 in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

MOVERS AND SHAKERS: Chrishaunda Lee, Television Personality of Animal Attractions

Chrishaunda Lee currently devotes her on-air camera time hosting a show centering on one of her biggest interests-animals. Animal Attractions TV, is a PBS family -based show that focuses on animals and their well being. This is just one more way that Chrishaunda has used her voice in the entertainment and educational industries. She has worked both in front of and behind the camera, at one time, doubling as a pr consultant for companies that ranged from fashion to finance as well as a freelance television correspondent for Entertainment Tonight.

Born and raised in Milwaukee, WI, upon entering high school, Chrishaunda was lucky enough to be accepted at the prestigious Miss Porter’s School in Farmington, CT and went on to college at Wesleyan University. While in college, Chrishaunda spent one semester at Spelman College in Atlanta and one in Spain becoming fluent in Spanish and working diligently at her major and concentration, theatre and costume design. For her major she’d completed two fashion internships (one in London) as well as performed Golden Age Spanish theatre whilst in Madrid.

After moving to New York, Chrishaunda began working in public relations at Ralph Lauren and soon moved on her own as a consultant as well as evolved with her outreach capabilities. She became a patron of the Humane Society, got involved with educational organizations like NFTE (The National Foundation teaching Entrepreneurship), the East Harlem School at Exodus House and reconnected with the development department at her high school alma mater, Miss Porter’s School. In 2003, Chrishaunda revived a play she’d written for her senior project in college, for which she’d also won an award and produced it Off-Off Broadway. That play, “Getting Under Our Own Skin”, in which she also starred, was loosely based on Chrishaunda’s upbringing in Milwaukee and was well received by both the audience and local media.

In early 2005 Chrishaunda evolved within her media-based career by serving in front of the camera when she first landed an opportunity to correspond on the Oprah Winfrey Show working with troubled teens. This appearance led to her freelance correspondent position for Entertainment Tonight.

Though currently in front of the camera, Chrishaunda has always used her voice to promote her passion for education as well. Through her membership at the National Arts Club in Gramercy Park, she has served as commencement speaker for New York City high schools supported by the club. She was just given the honor of becoming a Governor at the club, and in 2004, the additional responsibility of chairing the fashion committee. Whom You Know was pleased to attend this past Monday night to see Chrishaunda present the Young Innovative Award. (see previous Nightlight post.)

Chrishaunda has not only matured professionally but personally as well. In late 2005 she got married and the following year became a proud mother to a beautiful daughter.

Peachy Deegan is so pleased to present Chrishaunda Lee as our Mover and Shaker!

Peachy Deegan: What is your first animal memory?
Chrishaunda Lee: Though I have a few before this, my most memorable experience was adopting my dog Reina in 1997. She was tiny, the runt of her litter, with all of these other supposed 'issues' and she peed on me when she first got in my arms. Two
weeks in, she was cured of most of these 'issues' and she was already potty trained. Love can go very far. I knew she was the dog for me!

What do most people not realize about animals that they can learn through
watching Animal Attractions TV?
What people will find most interesting about Animal Attractions TV is the detail we take when it comes to giving pet advice and information. We don't really do 'overviews'. For example, when we are covering a segment about picking up dog poop in your home and the best way to clean your carpet, we re-inact the entire process if cleaning by using tootsie rolls in a very clever way!

What animals are your most and least favorite and why?
Love the furry, a bit nervous about the slimy! But ALL animals I enjoy observing.

How is your dog Reina?
Now that she is 14 1/2 years old, she is very very settled in her ways. Her 'ways' are for the most part very good and these are obviously ways she has been conditioned to be through me. Yet, as anyone who has a pet knows, they, too have their own personalities and DEFINITELY have feelings! When she does not want to be bothered, it is very evident. I think she is overall a happy old girl.

What did you learn through PR that has helped you in television?
PR has helped me pay more attention to detail as well as more of how the entertainment business works. Though PR is generally the first to go if a company has to downsize, it has still become a very important part of merchandising as well as personal careers. With regard to working in front of the camera, I have been conditioned to have extra respect for those that are called 'handlers'-the folks who can be the first to blame if something goes wrong but can be last to receive recognition if something goes right. I used to be one of those people.

As a journalist, what common mistakes in the English language bother you the
most? We believe you were in that same class as Peachy Deegan where you were
taught "It's not who you know, it's whom you know!"
I was and am a stickler for practicing proper grammar in any language. I also speak Spanish fluently and really have a hard time hearing that language butchered as well. Peachy Deegan and I had the best teacher, Mr. Rennie McQuilkin. Between him and my seventh grade English teacher Mr. Winterfeldt, I have truly become a language geek of sorts. Sometimes if I send a text message to someone and I misspell and word but push 'send' too soon, I can be known to send another text behind it with a correction. Also, if I know I am misspelling a word and don't have time to correct it, I will naturally write (sp) after the word. You don't want someone thinking you think you've spelled a word correctly-nor do you want to mislead someone into possibly copying your spelling of a word. I let them know ahead of time "I'm not sure if this is right!" Surely in these days of 'rush everything' or everything is written in abbreviations, no one cares, but I am one who will probably always will. For me, excellence begins and ends in the fundamentals.

What inspires you to be passionate about education?
I am inspired most about education simply because it is the one thing that someone can be given that cannot be taken away unless there is tragedy. One can be bankrupt but still have their smarts, one can be homeless and still have their intelligence. Even at the most humble of times, a proper education can work for you to help get yourself into a better situation. Not necessarily the type of degree you receive, but you are able to 'think' in a way that you would not be able to without education. With that forward thinking, you are already ahead of the game.

As you chair the fashion committee at the National Arts Club, what aspects of
style do you feel are the most important for both men and women and who are your
favorite designers and why?
Chairing the fashion committee at the National Arts Club has been so rewarding because I am exposed to so many people's personal styles. Conservative, trendy, couture, casual. All are fine if it works for you. At the club there is a dress code, so we are not able to express in such a broad way, but we I still play with it. The only aspect of style that is least important in my opinion is when you are not dressing yourself to make your personal canvas look best; you are trying to follow a trend or please someone else. Whatever you wear make sure YOU look smashing!
My favorite designers are Gianfranco Ferre, Lanvin, Oscar De La Renta, William Calvert, Valentino, Carolina Herrera and Diane Von Furstenberg. My reasons are: Lines, no lines, draping, silhouettes, and subtle drama.

What are the responsibilities of being Governor of the National Arts Club?
Meetings, a strong grasp of the how to maintain a balance between the traditional vision of the National Arts Club as well as futuristic endeavors, and a responsible mentality.

Do you have theatrical ambitions?
I love the art of oration, period. Speaking, acting, whatever that talent calls me to do. Of course I would love to use my voice for everything, and so far, I am very lucky to have been able to use it as I have thus far. However which way I am continuously used, as long as it is calling forth my best, I am always honored.

What are you the proudest of and why?
I am most proud of my best accomplishment yet-my daughter.

What is your favorite place to be in NYC?
My favorite place to be in New York is probably sitting in Central park in the summertime on a blanket with light jazz playing. My husband and I are being 'so together' by reading separate things and every once and a while, sharing thoughts, and our daughter is napping. Plus, there is a chilled bottle of my favorite reisling wine nearby. Other than that, at some authentic Mexican restaurant like Mama Mexico eating tacos with no etiquette.

What is your favorite shop?
Intermix- it really is a one stop shop for many different types of apparel.

What is your favorite drink?
Reisling Wine. Preferably Hogue. I am a very cheap date.

What is your favorite restaurant?
Cafe Luxembourg for breakfast.

What is your favorite NYC book?
Don't have one. All of the books I have read that list New York as the main setting are not extremely deep. More 'fun' reading. But one of my favorite NY writers is Malcolm Gladwell. He always provokes thought.

What is your favorite thing to do in NYC that you can do nowhere else?
Walk miles on pavement and not notice.

What do you think is most underrated and overrated here?
Underrated-Taxi availability. Just because there are taxis EVERYWHERE, depending on what time of day it is, what side of the street you are on, corner you are on, blah blah blah, can STRONGLY lessen the chance of you getting one.
Overrated-sample sales.

What else should Whom You Know readers know about you?
I am a bit of a fitness junkie as well.

Charitable Peachy: Hale House

Clara McBride Hale was born April 1, 1905 and grew up in Philadelphia. After completing high school, she married Thomas Hale. Together they had two children and the family moved to New York City, where the family lived and worked until Thomas died in 1938. A few years later, in the 1940s, Clara Hale began taking in foster children. Over the years she cared for dozens of children and became known as Mother Hale. In 1969 at the age of 64, Mother Hale was prepared to retire when a woman and her child came to her door. The mother, a woman addicted to heroin, explained that she needed help and couldn’t take care of her child. Mother Hale took the child in.

Word spread. As the weeks and months went by, more and more women with babies appeared at Mother Hale’s doorstep, and, as she took in these children, her home became Hale House. The women were often dependent on drugs and alcohol. Her goal was to unite children back with their mothers and fathers, once they got their lives back on track. If this wasn’t possible, she found stable, loving families to take them in. Mother Hale believed, unconditionally, that all children, from all walks of life and circumstances, need and deserve love. With this love they will not only survive, but will overcome the hardships into which they are born. These beliefs became “Mother Hale’s Way.” Mother Hale was a strong believer in the power of family, education and the community, beliefs we keep alive through our programs today and the source of their slogan: Empower, Educate, Excel.

During the 1970’s and 80s, Mother Hale continued to take in children addicted to heroin and, increasingly, crack cocaine. The City soon took notice of her work, and Hale House was moved from Mother Hale’s five-room apartment to its current location, a brownstone on 122nd Street in Harlem. As the 1980’s went on the urban drug problem gave way to the AIDS crisis, and Mother Hale responded by taking in children who had lost their parents to the disease or who were themselves born infected with HIV. In the 1990’s the drug problem spawned a grim new reality now widespread throughout America – an increase in the number of women incarcerated and, consequently, unable to care for their children. Mother Hale continued taking in and caring for children until she passed away on December 18, 1992 at the age of 87.

Over the years, Mother Hale received more than 370 awards and was publicly recognized across the nation. In 1985, President Ronald Reagan recognized Mother Hale at his State of the Union Address for her remarkable and tireless work with at-risk children and families. Mother Hale attended and accepted this honor with the humility and reserve for which she was well-known. During the Address, he stated to Mother Hale and to the entire nation, "Harlem and all of New York needs a local hero. Mother Hale, you are the one." He declared Mother Hale "an American hero, whose life tells us that the oldest American saying is new again: Anything is possible in America if we have the faith, the will and the heart."

Still located in Harlem, Hale House Center has changed with the times. The Mother Hale Learning Center (MHLC) opened its doors in 2006. The Center provides high quality, educationally based childcare to families from a variety of economic backgrounds. By offering discounts and scholarships to nearly half of the families at the center, economically disadvantaged children have access to high quality childcare that otherwise would not be readily available to them and all the children are exposed to socioeconomic groups they might not otherwise encounter.

The Hale House Supportive Transitional Housing Program, in operation since December 2004, provides a temporary home for single-parent homeless families for 6 to 12 months. They are able to serve 19 families in well maintained, Hale House Center-owned apartments. At any point in time there are over 50 children in this program, from infants to teenagers. Keeping with Mother Hale’s mission, their goal is to enable families to remain intact, live safely in a good neighborhood, attend school, find employment, and, once their lives are stabilized, secure and retain permanent housing.

Harlem is in great need of additional sources for high quality, affordable childcare for working and low-income families. Their current Center consistently has a waiting list of more than 200 children, highlighting the need and desire for their services in Harlem. With your help Hale House Center plans to open a new early childhood Learning Center in Harlem in. The new Center would replicate the services of their current Mother Hale Learning Center, which, since its opening in 2006, has achieved great recognition and is now being referred to as one of the “top schools in Harlem.” They also are working to continue expanding their current programs so they can serve more children and help more families both stay together and thrive during these challenging economic times.

BIG APPLE BUSINESS: Mary Giuliani Catering & Events

Celebrity caterer and event stylist Mary Giuliani continues to expand her presence among high profile stars and the fashion elite. On any given night, she can be spotted pleasing the palettes of clients ranging from Bulgari, Cartier and Zac Posen to Sheryl Crow and Gwen Stefani, among many others. Mary has quickly gained a loyal cult-like following for her signature “minis,” creative pairing menus and innovative tray design.

Mary’s entertaining roots stem from spending time with her family, especially her Grandmother, who owned an oceanside resort in Montauk, NY. Peachy Deegan loves this; she is also enamored with her grandmother who you will see at the bottom of the page of Whom You Know. It was there that Mary learned how to be the consummate hostess and acquired her fascination for culinary display.

During her time at Georgetown University, Mary pursued her love of food and spent a year in Florence, Italy studying wine and cuisine. After a brief stint Off-Broadway and small roles on television, Mary realized that she could translate her love of food and theater by producing beautiful events. She accepted a job with the Make-A-Wish Foundation in 1998 and created extraordinary events while raising more than one million dollars for the foundation.

After working with some of the most distinguished NY caterers and entertainers, Mary was able to fine-tune her skills in the culinary arts. With an entrepreneurial spirit, Mary and her husband Ryan founded Mary Giuliani Catering & Events in 2004. Quickly, she became one of the most sought-after caterers and event planners in New York. Known for their creativity with food and décor, the company has hosted events for the elite of the fashion, entertainment, art and corporate worlds.

Mary looks at every event as an opportunity to light up the stage. “It is important that my guests feel like integral players in the show. I like to feel the room and when there is a change in the energy, it is up to me to make sure that something positive happens.”

Mary Giuliani has been featured in Hamptons Magazine, People Style Watch, Manhattan Magazine, Elegant Bride, Page Six Magazine, Glamour, The NY Daily News, and BizBash, among other high profile media outlets. In May 2005, she was recognized by New York Moves as one of the top 25 “Woman on the Rise” in New York City. Whom You Know is looking forward to featuring her as a Mover and Shaker!

At the Met: Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures from the National Museum, Kabul

Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures from the National Museum, Kabul
June 23, 2009–September 20, 2009

Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Exhibition Hall, 2nd floor

Ancient Afghanistan—standing at the crossroads of major trade routes—was home to one of the most complex civilizations of Asia, where multiple artistic influences were intermingled. The exhibition celebrates this rich heritage and commemorates the heroic rescue of the most precious of Afghanistan's archaeological treasures, thought to have all been destroyed. Among the highlights are spectacular objects unearthed from four sites: gold vessels from the Bronze Age hoard at Tepe Fullol; architectural elements and sculptures from the Hellenistic city of Ai Khanum; extraordinary Indian-style ivories, Roman glass, and other goods, traded along the Silk Road, from the first-second-century site at Begram; and spectacular turquoise-inlaid gold jewelry and luxury objects from the first-century nomadic tombs at Tillya Tepe.

The exhibition is made possible in part by Raymond and Beverly Sackler and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The exhibition is organized by the National Geographic Society and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, in association with The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

It is supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.

MOVERS AND SHAKERS: Chadwick Bell, Designer

Chadwick Bell met his future business partner Vanessa Webster while growing up in California. One of the first peers to recognize his artistic talent, she encouraged Bell’s interest in fashion. At seventeen, he designed, produced, and presented forty looks with Webster’s support. He had found his passion and inspiration.

Bell’s design talent was further nurtured at UCLA’s Design & Media Arts program. While there, he focused on color theory and established his own fashion curriculum. To supplement his education, Bell found retail work in women’s collections. Selling Dolce & Gabbana in Los Angeles and later Chado Ralph Rucci in New York help shape his sensibility and develop a keen understanding for his clients’ sartorial needs and desires.

The Chadwick Bell collection began when Bell and Webster defined a lifestyle for their ideal woman. From there Bell designed the first looks. In 2007, Bell (Creative Director) and Webster (Managing Director) co-founded the Chadwick Bell label with a Ready-to-Wear Fall 2008 collection. Private client orders encouraged them to expand, and Bell designed a Spring 2009 collection shown during New York Fashion Week.
Chadwick Bell’s designs have a sophisticated ease about them. Passionate about fine craftsmanship, Bell utilizes the finest natural fabrics available, carving elegant shapes from the textiles. Clean lines, a muted color palette and exquisite attention to detail are consistent hallmarks of every piece. Bell creates a sense of modern refinement that is both simple and sensual. Chadwick Bell is sold by private appointment and online at Vivre.com. For additional information please visit www.chadwickbell.com.

Gracie Mansion

A BRIEF HISTORY OF GRACIE MANSION

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named

Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a

bend in the East River, five miles north of the City.

Financial failure forced Gracie to sell his house to Joseph

Foulke in 1823, and in 1857, the house came into the

possession of Noah Wheaton. The City of New York

appropriated the estate in 1896, incorporating its 11 acres

of grounds into East River Park, renamed in 1910 for

Carl Schurz.

After decades of use as a concession stand and restrooms

for the park, Gracie Mansion was restored and became

the first home of the Museum of the City of New York.

When it moved to a larger building, Gracie Mansion

became a historic house museum run by the Parks

Department. Parks Commissioner Robert Moses

convinced City authorities to designate it as the official

residence of the Mayor, and in 1942, Fiorello H. La

Guardia moved in.

The house was enlarged in 1966 with the addition of the

Susan E.WagnerWing, which includes a grand ballroom

and two intimate reception rooms. The Gracie Mansion

Conservancy was established in 1981, and under its

guidance, the first major restoration of the house was

undertaken between 1981 and 1984.

In 2002, the interior and exterior were again restored, and

the house was transformed into the “People’s House” with

increased accessibility to the public and to City agencies.

Gracie Mansion is also used to accommodate visiting

officials and dignitaries, such as former guests First Lady

Rosalynn Carter and South African President Nelson

Mandela.

The Gracie Mansion Conservancy is a private not-forprofit

corporation established in 1981 to preserve,

maintain, and enhance Gracie Mansion—one of the

oldest surviving wood structures in Manhattan and a

member of the Historic House Trust. The Conservancy’s

mission is to raise funds to restore the historic structure

and acquire furnishings that illustrate the rich history of

New York; improve the surrounding landscape and

gardens; and provide educational services, including

publications and tours.

historic house museums or to make a reservation for a

NIGHTLIGHT: Andrea Tese Receives Young Innovative Award from the National Arts Club

Chrishaunda Lee, Chair of the National Arts Club’s Fashion Committee said in awarding Andrea: “Andrea Tese’s (pictured above) work has a fresh and inspiring perspective which we find very exciting. Her images cleverly combine provocation with subtlety. We feel she is a true rising star in the fashion photography field and are delighted to be honouring her talent with this award.”

“The National Arts Club needs people like Andrea Tese” said Aldon James, President of the National Arts Club, as he handed over the Young Innovation Award for her achievement in the field of photography. The statuesque beauty, clad in a custom-made dress by designer Chadwick Bell and jewels by Stephen Webster, received the Gold Medal award in front of friends, family, photographers, fashion executives, designers and journalists. The Gold Medal Award is the highest honour the club presents and has been awarded to such legends as Oleg Cassini and Dave Brubeck. Andrea's gold medal was for Young Innovative Award. Tese’s striking fashion photography was displayed against the backdrop of the historic club, which was the first private members club in New York to accept women. The front parlour was packed with over 300 eclectic champagne-sipping supporters, including Governor Mario Cuomo, writing legend Dominic Dunne, the ambassador to Laos (the site of Tese’s upcoming humanitarian project), Vogue’s Meredith Melling-Burke, Elissa Lumley and Valerie Boster, Sandra Ballentine (T: The New York Times’ Style Magazine) as well as journalists from French Vogue, Forbes, Lucky, the New York Times, The New York Post, Plum TV, WWD, fashionistas Kate Nahon, Be Inthavong (of Be&D), Emma Schilling-Law (Ralph Lauren), Brooke Travis (Dior), Jean-Baptiste Duquesne (Hermes), as well as New York beauties Stephanie d’Orglandes, Carolina von Humboldt, Lucia Tait, Annabelle Vartanian, Amanda Doll Sheppard and members of the National Arts Club.

MOVERS AND SHAKERS: Ronnie Segev, Classical Pianist and Artistic Director of Ten O'Clock Classics

Ronnie Segev is a classical pianist and the Artistic Director of Ten O'Clock Classics (TOC), a performing arts group that works to bring classical music and the arts to a broader audience. Born to Israeli parents, Ronnie Sergev grew up in Houston, TX where he attended the High School for Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA), the same high school that Beyonce attended. In 1997 Segev was accepted to study at the Juilliard School, where he founded the Student Council and became its first President. Despite its 100 year history, students at Juilliard were generally too focused on their art to form a student government. With the support of the Joseph Polisi, the President of Juilliard, Segev successfully implemented changes to Juilliard, including improvements the liberal arts curriculum, and increased student privileges.

In 2000, Segev founded the Ten O'Clock Classics with the financial support of David Picket, real estate developer and President of the Gotham Organization. Ten O'Clock Classics was founded because Segev felt that Classical and Jazz Music, which he considers to be an incredibly relevant art form, was an integral enough part of the culture at large. Picket and Segev garnered additional financial support and put together a board which today funds many of the group's activities. Although the group performs regularly on the most prestigious concert stages, such as Carnegie Hall, TOC's unique appeal stems from their presentations in non-traditional venues such as legendary disco club Studio 54 and Crunch Fitness.Through these outreach concerts, Segev was working to change the perception of classical music as "old people's music." Instead, he created musical formats which were vibrant, exciting, and unexpected. Segev's TOC has enjoyed the support of A-List Celebrities like Billy Joel, who recently auctioned off a Steinway piano to support the group, and Jazz Legend Wynton Marsalis.

TOC's efforts include an education program that brings music lessons and instruments to talented underprivileged children in NYC. He believes initiatives like this program are crucial in keeping the arts alive in an age where many public schools are forced to cut or eliminate arts programs like music education altogether. TOC was most recently recognized by the NY Times, the Daily News and countless of other new outlets for their efforts to continue their program in spite of economic hardships.

In addition to his career as a pianist and Director of Ten O'Clock Classics, Segev has started and maintained several businesses, including Park Avenue Pianos http://www.parkavenuepianos.com, for which he is the President of the company, and a new venture called Condo Team Buy, designed to help consumers and everyday investors profit from the distressed real estate market in Florida. Condo Team Buy is set to launch in June 2009.

Peachy Deegan interviewed Ronnie Sergev for Whom You Know.

Peachy Deegan: What is your first musical memory?
Ronnie Sergev: My older brother playing the small upright piano we had in our home.

What is it about classical music that makes it universally appealing?
Classical Music, through its thoughtful form and powerful rhythms, melodies, and when performed with passion and vigor, can be spellbinding for just about anyone.

Did you know Beyonce in high school?
Yes, I did the piano accompaniment for her a bit while she was in the opera program.

What inspired you to start the student council at Juilliard?
I wanted the students (who were generally too focused on their artistic craft to deal with the administration) to have a voice in the institution and the ability to make changes.

What is on the horizon for Ten O'Clock Classics?
We hope to continue to expand our reach to more schools.

How do you balance your Real Estate and Music careers?
It's difficult to balance music and my business side, but my wonderful colleague Tovah Rose is a great asset, and I can confidently ask her to share in the work's burdens.

What is your opinion on the Florida Real Estate Market? What are the best areas to buy in now?
South Beach and Sunny Isles

What is your favorite place to be in NYC?
Carnegie Hall

What is your favorite shop?
Whole Foods

What is your favorite drink?
A White Russian

What is your favorite restaurant?
Sushi Damo

What is your favorite NYC book?
Carnegie Hall, The First One Hundred Years

What is your favorite thing to do in NYC that you can do nowhere else?
Walk in Central Park

What do you think is most underrated and overrated here?
Underrated are the people of NY and overrated is the "Sex and The City" Lifestyle..

Literacy Associates to Host Benefit at Tenjune to Highlight Adult Illiteracy Issues

Tuesday, June 2 has just taken on special meaning, it was announced today. And Caroline Kennedy is going to be part of it. Whom You Know loves this group! We love literacy and proper grammar, especially the use of the word WHOM!

That evening, Gen-X and Gen-Y fast trackers, members of Society and Ms. Kennedy will join up-and-coming headliners from the worlds of publishing, fashion, design and media, at Tenjune, the hot club in the Meat Packing District.

The occasion: Literacy Associates First Annual Benefit

The under-50 supporters of Literacy Partners, New York's only accredited adult literacy organization, created the Literacy Associates Committee to raise awareness of adult illiteracy among a younger demographic.

To tee up the event, Literacy Associates has organized a special online auction at www.charityfolks.com/literacypartners, beginning May 25th. Supporters will have the opportunity to bid on exciting items like a one-week Jamaican vacation, a behind-the-scenes VIP tour of The TODAY Show and the opportunity to name a character in the next installment of James Patterson’s bestselling series, Maximum Ride. If bidding on the Maximum Ride lot goes over $10,000, Patterson will also dedicate the book to the lucky winner.

WHEN: Tuesday, June 2 from 7 p.m. till 10 p.m.

"The root of my business revolves around paying attention to details, what people are looking for and how they expect it to be done. Having worked with Peachy recently, I have been impressed with what she not only listens to and asks, but what she notices in what is sometimes not said. She has brought to life the conversations we’ve had in our meetings and she hasn’t missed a beat. For someone to represent herself as an eye for what is best, she knows what to look for and how to find it."
