One of our best recent experiences was a surprise to us.  Someone was walking to Bloomingdale's, and passed a culinary endeavor we hadn't yet heard of: The Jeffrey, one of the nicest surprises we've had in Manhattan this fall.  It is celebrating its one-year anniversary now!  Owner Patrick Donagher, who hails from County Donegal, is doing amazing work at his beer garden/cocktail bar/coffee bar/craft beer bar.  We haven't seen such diversity in such a small place done so well.
On the day we visited, the Daily Oyster selections included Kusshi from the other BC, British Columbia, and the ones we ordered: Wellfleet, which are from Massachusetts (where our favorite BC is.)  The Wellfleet Oysters were simply smashingly fresh and succulent, and every bit was fabulous as if you were eating them at a place with a white tablecloth.
This announced quality to us, and don't think that casual places are less sophisticated.  The Jeffrey has the best quality of any casual place we've been to recently, and this was just our first visit.

The Kale salad is just triumphant, and Patrick told us how much he loved it so we thought we'd find out how we liked it.  This Tuscan Kale Salad comes complete with pine nuts, shaved root vegetables, picked strawberries, aged asiago and truffle vinaigrette.  And we loved it!
It is definitely what you should be eating this weekend.  Ms. I Don't Like Salad Dressing loved this one, and it comes dressed for the party on your palate.
Aside from the creatively added strawberries, the Asiago cheese is quintessential to this vegetable victory.
You have to try The Jeffrey Reubenstein.  Before this creation, Peachy Deegan knew Rubenstein, but not this sumptuous sandwich.  Pastrami, sauerkraut and house made IPA mustard on rye will totally hit the spot, and the chips were delicately devoured with enthusiasm too.  This is every bite as delicious as it looks:
