World sailors of the year Peter Burling and Blair Tuke will take the gold medal in the 49er class with a race to spare, having opened up an insurmoutable lead in the qualifying series.

The Emirates Team New Zealand rookies, winners of the inaugural Red Bull Youth America's Cup, have sailed an impeccable Olympic campaign, all but unbeaten since winning the silver medal at the London Games four years ago.

They come off the water on Tuesday with a 34-point lead. Only 20 points are available in Thursday's medal race, which they will sail as a formality.

The reigning gold medalists, Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen, from Artemis Racing, will enter Thursday's medal race in third place. The Australians are just three points behind Germany for silver. A good performance could earn them the silver medal, but they'll need to keep an eye out as they could drop off the podium with a poor race.

Briton Giles Scott, who sails with Land Rover BAR and also opened a large lead to claim his gold medal with a race to spare earlier this week, finished in second place in the medal race, cementing his position as the best in the world.

Jason Waterhouse, an Australian who is scheduled to join SoftBank Team Japan following the Games, won a silver medal in the Nacra 17 multihull class.

Waterhouse was the skipper of the Australian Red Bull Youth America's Cup team in San Francisco in 2013.
