Whom You Know Celebrates Our 24,000th Post with AMC's The Night Manager Which Earns Our Highest Recommendation #HistoryofWhomYouKnow #SmallScreenScenes #WhomYouKnow @NightManagerAMC @AMC_TV @lecarre_news #TheNightManager Based on the Book by John le Carre, Which Previously Earned Our Highest Recommendation

“Having your book turned into a movie is like seeing your oxen turned into bouillon cubes”

 ― John Le Carre

In many cases, that is true.  But if bouillon cubes could taste like lobster salad, one exactly like Corky wants, The Night Manager on AMC is the best literary work we have ever seen put on the big screen.
And it's in that restaurant scene where le Carre makes a cameo you can't miss.
We bet that lobster was delicious and perhaps eat a lobster while you watch this.

Previously on Whom You Know in READ THIS, the book The Night Manager by John le Carre Earned Our Highest Recommendation:

Right from the opening score with powerful visual measures, The Night Manager strikes an extraordinary tone from its weaponry to its pearls to its champagne and finally much to our chagrin, demise of the chandelier.  We possess a pronounced affinity for chandeliers as you know.  Physically, the opening scene is set in Egypt, where all pandemonium breaks loose on the streets as Jonathan Pine, our protagonist diligently makes his way to work as a Night Manager at a hotel that is luxurious in sharp contrast to this outside crisis mode that is dominoing into all nearby life.

With characters bigger than life itself, The Night Manager book dictated a tall order for the Casting Director of this series and that person, whom we do not know, certainly rose to the occasion.  Every cast member delivered an unforgettable stellar performance and the chemistry among them is enchanting.  The six episodes will reel you in and immediately silence anything else in your life until you arrive at its riveting conclusion.

Striking in a green dress at her first screen shot, Sophie, complete with doggie, delivers an ideal balance between vulnerability and strength.  Make me a coffee, won't you, Mr. Pine...you know, the one that looks fine by daylight even though he's the night manager.

Everyone that is detail-oriented in life will appreciate the exquisite paperwork and documentation employed throughout.

The Night Manager opens a critical eye to the world of philanthropy, where not everything is as straight up as it should be or seems.   And the do-gooder-in-chief here is Mr. Richard Onslow Roper, not at all to be confused with the small screen Roper of the past who catered to Janet, Jack and Chrissy.  Hugh Laurie, Mr. R.O.R. himself, achieves a superlative cadence and brings celebrated execution to the well-crafted le Carre words of Mr. Richard Onslow Roper.  It's UN time here in New York right now: wait until you see Roper's version of the UN!  Hearing him elegantly utter the beautiful banter is the best part of this series, until you consider the chameleon-like properties of Mr. Jonathan Pine.

Or is it Jack Lindon?

Or is it Thomas Quince?

Or is it Andrew Burch?

He sees everything, and says nothing as noted by Caroline.

One of the best of all is Angela Burr, who has transformed into a pregnant female for the screen (this character is a man in the book.)  Played by the sensational star whom we have admired in Broadchurch,
Olivia Colman is at her best and most piranha-like, and it is a beautiful sight to see.  Her sheer ambition and clearcut determination is inspiring.  Played by Elizabeth Debicki, Jed Marshall is luminously layered as a character, and it's not all that meets the eye as you might imagine.  Debicki is new to us, and highly talented in this work.

Though you will be inevitably tempted to break out the shampoo for this winner-shampoo is Roper-speak for Champagne- we urge you to absolutely read the book at least once first and stay away from shampoo and the like so you don't miss anything.  The small screen execution is just as sharp as the book, which is a welcome elevation for American audiences in particular.  Also America, look up Guy Fawkes first so you understand that reference.

Roper is not the only evil-doer; one of our favorite people to hate, Tobias Menzies, whom you know from all his villany in Outlander, makes a fantastic white-collar criminal as does Permanent Secretary Katherine Kelly, whom you know as Lady Mae from Mr. Selfridge.  Both are purely revolting, appropriately.  (Surely they are nice people in real life!)

Beyond the characters, the score was superbly on-point throughout and created, captured and segued the moods of the book from crescendo to decrescendo to echo the major plot turning points, which we will not reveal.

Scenery from the River House and the Embankment in gloomy London to gorgeous winter in Switzerland to the chaos in Egypt to the serenity of Spain is transformatively breathtaking.  However, we will point out the entirety takes place in Europe and Egypt on the screen while North America and the Caribbean play a part in the book.  We were so disappointed to not see Connecticut or Florida in the AMC version however we did note that Jed no longer is English: she hails from the one and only Upper East Side!  So, if the second season is going to include that which it inevitably will, Peachy is available for consulting and screen appearance which will add authenticity, as she is a total Upper East Side expert and resident for beaucoup de years.

In the wake of current news in America, right and wrong has become clearer than ever.

Though this came out a couple of years ago, the triumph of good over evil is a timeless saga that is most wonderfully captured in The Night Manager.
Who's living on borrowed time?
Who's the rotten apple?

What are you prepared to do to stand up for what's right?!

The Night Manager on AMC has Earned our Highest Recommendation.

We understand there will be a second season.  How many more days?  Can we help write it?

A contemporary interpretation of John le Carré’s espionage drama – and the first television adaptation of a le Carré novel in more than 20 years – “The Night Manager” mini-series will bring together love, loss and revenge in a complex story of modern criminality. The series follows former British soldier Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston) who is recruited by intelligence operative Angela Burr (Olivia Colman) to infiltrate the inner circle of international businessman Richard Onslow Roper (Hugh Laurie) and detonate the unholy alliance he has ministered between the intelligence community and the secret arms trade. To get to the heart of Roper’s vast empire, Pine must withstand the suspicious interrogations of his venal chief of staff Major Corkoran (Tom Hollander) and the allure of his beautiful girlfriend Jed (Elizabeth Debicki). In his quest to do the right thing, Pine must first become a criminal himself.

PASADENA, CA – January 10, 2015 – BBC One, The Ink Factory and AMC today announced a co-production partnership for the television adaptation of John le Carré’s novel “The Night Manager.” Multiple Emmy® nominee Hugh Laurie (“House”) and Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers, War Horse, Midnight in Paris) will star in the mini-series, which is set to begin filming in spring 2015. Susanne Bier, who won an Academy Award® for In a Better World, will direct.

“‘The Night Manager’ is truly the whole package. It’s a terrific piece of source material, great producers in The Ink Factory, a phenomenal writer in David Farr, an award-winning director in Susanne Bier, and two incredibly talented actors,” said Joel Stillerman, AMC’s executive vice president of programming, production and digital content. “Beyond that, it represents AMC’s continuing commitment to finding creative ways to work with the international community to bring the best television to our network – an initiative we have ramped up very quickly that has already resulted in multiple high-quality projects for our air. We’re thrilled to be in business with the BBC and the fantastic ‘Night Manager’ team.”

Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning, said: “It’s a fantastic coup to bring le Carré back to our screens after more than 20 years. He is quite simply one of the greatest novelists of our time, and I am sure that with AMC, Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie on board, this will be one of the BBC’s most unique, ambitious and unmissable dramas.”

Simon Cornwell of The Ink Factory said: “Working with AMC to deliver ‘The Night Manager’ to U.S. and Canadian audiences is a huge privilege. AMC has established itself as one of the great innovators in television in the 21st century, and alongside the BBC we believe they are the best possible partners to support this incredible project. Tom Hiddleston said: “I could not be more excited to join BBC One, The Ink Factory and AMC for ‘The Night Manager.’ Jonathan Pine is a thrilling prospect. Described by John le Carré as a ‘sometime army wolfchild with a special unit’ in the British forces, ‘caterer, chef, itinerant hotelier, perpetual escapee from emotional entanglements, collector of other people’s languages, self-exiled creature of the night and sailor without a destination,’ Jonathan Pine is the most mysterious and complex kind of British hero. It’s an honor and a privilege to work with such truly impeccable collaborators as Hugh Laurie and Susanne Bier in bringing this to the screen. David Farr’s screenplay, adapted from le Carré’s brilliant novel, is absolutely outstanding. I’m beyond thrilled and I can’t wait.”

Susanne Bier said: “John le Carre’s ‘The Night Manager’ is a relentlessly exhilarating thriller with profound emotional depths. Its narrative is carried by two secretive, alluring protagonists, Roper and Pine. David Farr’s elegant script perfectly orchestrates the central cat-and-mouse game between these two irresistibly flawed characters. That Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston will be playing Roper and Pine, respectively, is so thrilling to me. Their shared soulfulness, precision and sharp humor will seduce us all, both through Roper’s charming yet insidious manipulations and Pine’s unsettlingly enigmatic struggle to do the right thing. It is a great honor to be directing ‘The Night Manager’ and to be part of the collaboration between AMC, BBC1, The Ink Factory and Stephen Garrett. I could not be more excited.”
