PRODUCT ALERT: Superiore State-of-the-Art Mascara by Borghese

It's Friday night and time to break out those lashes! Peachy Deegan recommends Borghese's Superiore State-of-the-Art Mascara.

The thickening mascara, is quite "Superiore." Infused with a built-in, silk-powder foundation for superior wear, delicate lashes are coddled in natural conditioners while providing smudge-proof, flake-proof coverage. This product is suitable for contact lens wearers like Peachy Deegan and sensitive eyes.

What we like about this product at Whom You Know:
* Hydrolyzed Silk Powder Foundation provides extended wear.
* Lengthens, separates and curls lashes without clumping.
* Acqua di Vita® Complex, vitamins and protein add nourishing moisture and conditioners to lashes.

To use this, apply from base of lash to tip and of course you KNOW this, but to ensure continued purity, cap tightly and do not dilute. Bat those lashes, Whom You Know readers!

PRODUCT ALERT: DKNYMEN

This season, DKNY launched DKNYMEN, a fresh new fragrance for Men-and what could be better for our men readers of Whom You Know than a fabulous new fragrance named after the city that we are dedicated to!

The scent is brand new and conveys strength and power, the kind which can only be found in Manhattan. The energy of DKNYMEN is as iconic as the Manhattan skyline and remind Peachy Deegan of a Little Red Corvette speeding down Fifth Avenue with fast, spicy notes of white pepper and cardamom mixed with lavender, jasmine, sandalwood, cedarwood and patchouli. Intense, intriguing and irresistable, DKNYMEN is a beacon of modern power.

Inspired by the Flatiron building, the bottle (shown above) is bold and evocative and its architecture will enhance the essence of the man wearing it.

Whom You Know declares DKNYMEN a must-have for the fragrance collection of today's Manhattan Male Whom You Know reader, and it is more for the classy, streetsmart, goal-oriented guy than the cliched metrosexual. Which is why we think it is perfect!

Founded in 1990, DKNY was created by Donna Karan to be the streetside of her luxe collection.

Peachy participated in the National Park Service Ranger-led walking tour of the historic district on Governors Island prior to the island’s official opening on May 30. The 1.5-mile tour lasted approximately 90 minutes and visited all the significant sites on the island ranging from the historic fortifications Castle Williams and Fort Jay to the much later barracks building Liggett Hall to houses of worship and the officers housing among others.

About Governors Island National Monument

Governors Island National Monument was established to preserve the island’s historically significant military fortifications, Castle Williams and Fort Jay. Governors Island is a 172-acre island, of which the National Park Service administers the 22-acre Governors Island National Monument. The remaining150 acres are administered by the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation whose goal is to redevelop the island as one of New York City’s great destinations. The island is open to the public during the summer and early fall, providing opportunities to experience the visual and performing arts as well as to learn about the island’s role in national and international events and its place as part of New York Harbor’s rich history and ecology. Gotham Gadgets: The Spring Loaded Insoles by Hammacher Schlemmer

If you have a pair of feet, you need a pair of these! Here at Whom You Know we are dedicated to fabulous footwear, as seen in Shoe of the Week for both women and men, and we are also dedicated to comfort! With these fabulous Hammacher Schlemmer Spring Loaded Insoles you will have happy feet!

Peachy Deegan says they are the absolute best insoles she has EVER had. Designed to be worn in dress shoes, these insoles have six springs in the heel that return some of the energy of the downward footfall back up to the body for a "push off" with every stride. Whom You Know is equally pleased with both the men's and women's version, both of which were tested by us. Skiers will particularly like them as the insoles adapt the ski boot footbed concept to everyday shoe wear. The foot slides around much less in the shoe, and there is particularly good support for the balls of the feet. Additionally, they are easy to move from shoe to shoe.

Many foot and ankle ailments stem from the impact of the body's weight while walking, which is why the coils are positioned directly underneath the heel. The suspension coils are only 1/4" thick, making them undetectable until a step is taken. The springs will never wear down or lose their shock-absorbing capability. The insole has a honeycomb padding with valves that draw in and expel air during walking for constant circulation to keep the shoe dry. EVA padding in the forefoot cushions and supports the foot. You will be able to walk for miles and miles in Manhattan with the comfort of the Spring Loaded Insoles by Hammacher Schlemmer. Whom You Know LOVES them!

They are available in:
Men's sizes S (4-6), M (7-8), L (9-10), or XL (11-13); Women's sizes S (5 1/2-7 1/2), M (8-9 1/2), L (10-11 1/2), XL (12-13 1/2).

To make your piggies happy and the rest of your feet too, find them under:

Crystal Candy - National Gemstone of U.S. to Highlight Sale of Natural History

Bonhams will hold its spring auction of Natural History on June 1, 2009. The 525 lot sale offers a diverse group of high quality and distinctive mineral specimens, gold nuggets, lapidary works of art, gemstones and jewelry in addition to exceptional fossils.

Chosen to highlight the auction with a featured section of over 50 lots is the semi-precious stone tourmaline. Selected for its colorful, fresh spring-like qualities, the mineral derives its name from the Sinhalese word "turamali" and is distinguished by its three-sided prisms. Tourmaline can be found in Russia, Brazil, Madagascar, Mozambique, Afghanistan and San Diego County, California. Highly coveted by collectors, the stone is available in a wide variety of hues from across the color spectrum including green, red, yellow, candy pink, black and blue. Many shades of tourmaline are featured throughout the auction as examples of polished and unpolished minerals, unmounted stones and jewelry.

According to Claudia Florian G.J.G., Co-Consulting Director, Natural History “Interest in tourmaline among collectors has grown exponentially in the past several years. Made popular by its hardness level, it is the perfect stone for daily wear in the form of jewelry. Blue tourmalines, such as those examples featured in the June auction, are extremely rare and highly sought after by the public. Tourmaline is also the national gemstone of the United States, due to the once abundant deposits of pink stone in San Diego County, California.”

Leading the tourmaline offerings is a multi-color suite of jewelry comprised of 59 tiny, intricately hand-carved flowers by German lapidary master Manfred Wild (est. $28,000-35,000). Consisting of a necklace and pair of earrings, the ensemble is composed of a variety of tourmalines from several world localities. Done in hues of hot pink, red, yellow orange, bi-color, green and the highly sought after blue, each individual flower centers on a small white pearl to provide a natural look and elegant feel.

Known for his virtuoso work in rare, precious and semi-precious materials, Wild is one of the world’s most famous creators of objets d’ art. His vocabulary of carving and design excellence includes perfume bottles, animals, whimsical figures, flower studies and enameled eggs with concealed ‘surprises’ as well as objets de fantaisie.

Additional hand-carved tourmaline pieces created by Wild on offer in the spring auction include a transparent green Brazilian box trimmed in 18 karat gold (est. $15,000-18,000); a multi-color and sterling silver presentation box fitted with a rare Liddicoatite slice from Madagascar displaying brilliant concentric banding in red, candy pink, green and black (est. $12,000-15,000); a finely detailed, intensely pink Madagascar tourmaline carving of a mouse (est. $4,500-5,500) and an unusual bi-color pink and green tourmaline and 18K gold miniature sculpture of a grasshopper (est. $3,500-4,500).

The auction will also feature a group of carvings by another renowned Idar-Oberstein artist, Gerd Dreher. Notable highlights include a fish created from a massive slab of Madagascar tourmaline (est. $9,000-12,000) and a pair of dolphins made from nearly 6,000 carats of aquamarine (est. $25,000-35,000). Imaginative young designers, Syliva and Luis Quispe, also trained in Idar-Oberstein, Germany have produced an opulent hand-carved marine life chess set made of ruby and lapis lazuli trimmed with 18K gold and accompanied by an illuminated rock crystal and obsidian chess board (est. 90,000-110,000) which will also be featured during the June 1st sale.

The jewelry section of the auction boasts a massive 99-carat carved black opal and diamond pendant from the world renowned locality of Lightning Ridge, Australia. Dubbed “Aqua Profonda” by designer Jenni Brammall, the piece was created specifically for use during the Australian Masters of Fashion Awards 2008 in Melbourne, Australia, and stage worn by several models throughout the premier fashion design competition (est. $50,000-60,000).

Items for women by well-known jeweler Robert Wander will also be included. Wander is the originator of the term “Crystal Candy” and his line consists of brilliantly colored gems which are often left unpolished to showcase the natural beauty of the stone. Found at upscale department stores throughout the United States, several of Wander’s spectacular pieces have been selected for this auction to illustrate the tourmaline theme (estimates upon request). Also featured are several pieces of signed jewelry for men including a wonderful array of cufflinks made available to the public just in time for Father’s Day.

Auction: June 1, 2009 at 1:00pm, Bonhams New York
Preview: Friday-Sunday, May 29-31, 2009, Bonhams New York

Eat, Drink and Be Healthy: Cleansing

Question from Whom You Know:

What are good ways of doing "cleansing"?

Answer from our expert, Karim Fugel, CHHC, Reiki Practitioner, CST:

When cleansing it is important to be sure you have enough protein. After 72 hours without protein, your body begins to digest it's own muscle to compensate. Many cleanses sold over the counter are dangerous for that reason. At jf gymnastique, Dr. Portera and I offer cleanses supported by medical foods so optimal levels of macro and micro nutrients are maintained in your system while allowing the body to release built-up toxins. (Our jump start cleanse package is a 4 day cleanse.)

Karim is a Holistic Health Counselor specializing in nutritional guidance. She is certified by Teachers College Columbia University in partnership with the Institute for Integrative Nutrition as well as the American Association of Drugless Practitioners. Karim has received a certificate in Food Therapy from The Natural Gourmet Institute for Food and Health. She is currently pursuing her Masters Degree in Holistic Nutrition from Clayton College of Natural Health.

BIG APPLE BUSINESS: F.M. Allen

Here at Whom You Know we obsess about finding the best of everything in Manhattan for you and we adore the classics while we embrace the trends of the season that make sense.

F.M. Allen is an example of this! If you are a dedicated Whom You Know reader, you know Peachy Deegan supports great education, and is thus in love with her alma maters, which is how she learned of this fabulous little shop on Madison Avenue-someone from another prep school is involved in it.

F.M. Allen is a classy shop- but we know, especially since trendsetter and Mover and Shaker Courtney Moss (another who prepped herself) alerted us months ago that the safari look is so IN this season.

The company began life in 1947 when F.M. "Bunny" Allen moved from his native England to Kenya and began his professional hunter/safari guide service. Allen was one of the last great gentlemen hunters of Africa, and led safaris for everyone from Prince Aly Khan to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales to Mick Jagger. He is responsible for guiding the largest luxury safari of all time, leading a cast and crew of 500+ for John Ford's 1953 masterpiece "Mgambo."

In 2003, Tee Faircloth revived the company and brought it to the United States. Today, F.M. ALLEN is a retailer of men's clothing, accessories and unique gifts. They stay true to their outfitter heritage, but the product offering has expanded to include a full line of English-inspired clothing and accoutrements. F.M. Allen aims to take the very best of classic design and construction and, when called for, add a touch of contemporary advancement, offering items are made by artisans where true craftsmanship and the attention to the most minute of detail is of utmost importance.

The company's design headquarters and flagship retail store are located on Main Street in historic downtown Franklin, Tenn., just outside of Nashville, but Whom You Know loves its retail store at 962 Madison Avenue (between 75th & 76th streets) on Manhattan's Upper East Side. Take a look and tell them Peachy Deegan sent you!

H&M Announces Another Star Studded Roster for Fashion Against AIDS 2009

For the second year in a row, H&M and Designers Against AIDS (DAA) team up with some of the biggest celebrities from the world of fashion, music and entertainment. The Fashion Against AIDS apparel campaign works to fight the disease and raise awareness among young people. Artists such as Estelle, N.E.R.D, Katy Perry, Dita von Teese, and Yoko Ono worked with H&M to design t-shirts, t-shirt dresses, tank tops and bodysuits. Twenty five percent of the campaign sales will be donated to HIV/AIDS youth awareness projects. This special 100 percent organic cotton collection launches for guys and girls in H&M DIVIDED departments beginning June 2009.

“The collection has a 1980s feel with mixtures of white, bright and graffiti-like prints. Girls can wear them with short skirts or worn denim with big accessories to complete the look. Boys can match the t-shirts with colored denim or rolled-up chinos complimenting the 80s aesthetic” says Ann-Sofie Johansson, H&M Head of Design. “The fight against AIDS has always been one of our priorities, and H&M is overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and commitment from each and every celebrity involved in this collection."

“H&M and Fashion Against AIDS are very important to us. We could never reach an audience of so many young people on our own,” explains Ninette Murk, founder, Designers Against AIDS. “AIDS is still a significant issue. People establish an attitude towards their sex lives at a very young age, so it's very important for them to realize how crucial safe sex is, as early as possible.”

For the 2009 Fashion Against AIDS collection, the message is loud and clear with bold language and vibrant colors. Roisin Murphy’s t-shirt is bold with the phrase “Protection is power” on the front and back of a men’s t-shirt and a women’s bodysuit. N.E.R.D uses a clever graphic to shout “use your brain” on vibrant tank tops and t-shirts for both men and women. Estelle designed a tank top with the slogan “LIFE IS TOO SHORT – HAVE SEX BE SAFE” next to a sassy silhouette of an empowered woman. Katy Perry’s clever safe sex message, “WHAT’S ON THE OUTSIDE IS WHAT COUNTS,” appears on both a bodysuit and a cap-sleeved shirt. In a nostalgic nod to her roots, “GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE SAFE SEX” is scribbled in pink lipstick on Cyndi Lauper’s t-shirt. Others include Yoko Ono’s design of the words “IMAGINE PEACE” in multiple languages and Robyn’s feisty “PROTECT YOUR BODY.” Dita von Teese, an avid supporter of AIDS causes, created an alluring image of her iconic red lips and arched brow on a cute cap-sleeved T.

"It is really great that H&M continues to educate its customers and the world about HIV/AIDS with their campaign Fashion Against AIDS. We must never give up the fight against this horrible disease and we must constantly remind each other not to become apathetic or careless. The war on HIV/AIDS must continue."

In the United States alone, over a million people were living with HIV by the end of 2008. What is particularly worrisome is that an estimated 250,000 of these individuals were unaware of their HIV positive status. Each new generation needs to be made aware of AIDS to prevent further spread of the disease. With HIV and AIDS, complacency is not an option.

This is the second year that H&M has teamed up with the charitable organization Designers Against AIDS to disseminate the safe sex message to young people. Last year’s campaign was a stunning success, with over SEK 15 million donated to HIV/AIDS prevention projects. This year's beneficiaries are Designers Against AIDS, YouthAIDS, UNFPA and MTV Staying Alive Foundation.

Peachy Deegan interviewed Tiffany Koury for Whom You Know.

Peachy Deegan: When did you realize you wanted to be a designer?
Tiffany Koury: When I was fourteen, my fashion design teacher recognized me as a prodigy. She highly encouraged me to enroll in a summer program for high school students at The Fashion Institute of Technology when I was sixteen. Once I spent that summer in NYC, I knew this was the career choice for me.

What is your favorite piece that you have designed?
I would have to say my Lucille and Vivien gowns. They each have such a timeless glamour to them with very intricate and stunning details.

Which experience working for others in fashion shaped you the most before you went out on your own and why?
I always knew I wanted to launch my own label, and working for others allowed me to gain the knowledge in order to venture out on my own. After working at Nautica in men's wovens for four years I knew it was time to branch out.

How would you describe your styles to someone that has not seen them before?
My styles are romantic and inspired by the early Hollywood sirens! Lace, silk, and pearls are favorites of mine that I consistently work into my designs. I want to make women feel like they are glowing at all times of the day or night. My grandmother was truly the one who influenced my style. She was always dressed in timeless silhouettes. This inspired me to launch a collection that is reminiscent to her style and to the style of the early Hollywood bombshells.

Are all of your items bespoke?
Currently, I am approaching my business similar to that of Charles James. Therefore, I stick to custom pieces as I like to establish relationships with my clients. I find this very fulfilling, yet playful as well. My motto is, "Come and play dress up with TK."

What kind of dresses are the most challenging to design?
I love working on the bias as Vionnet was famous for. However, it can be tremendously difficult at times due to the draping involved.

What bathing suits are hottest for 2009?
I would have to say my retro suits trimmed with tonal lace and Swarovski crystals or pearls. My favorite style this season is the bombshell booty short with ruching and lace ties. This is such a flattering style for everyone. I also favor Deep V one-pieces this year in classic cuts from the 1950's.

What is your favorite place to be in NYC?
At home with my fabulous fiancé Marten Kayle and our two precious Shih Tzu's, Axl Rose and Cody.

What is your favorite shop?
Barney's and Bergdorf's are at the top of my list mainly because of the extensive selection of immaculate brands, but I most often prefer to wear TK.

What is your favorite drink?
Rose Champagne

What is your favorite restaurant?
Daniel

What is your favorite NYC book?
The Bombshell Manual of Style

What is your favorite thing to do in NYC that you can do nowhere else?
Visiting the museums here of course!

What do you think is most underrated and overrated here?
The most underrated is taking a horse drawn carriage in Central Park. The most overrated are Broadway musical shows!

What else should Whom You Know readers know about you?
It is my goal to make women feel confident and beautiful with what they wear, and I will always strive to bring out the inner bombshell in every woman through my work.

How would you like to be contacted by Whom You Know readers?
via email at info@tiffanykoury.com

May 27 SELSELEH / ZELZELEH: MOVERS & SHAKERS IN CONTEMPORARY IRANIAN ART

SELSELEH / ZELZELEH:

MOVERS & SHAKERS IN CONTEMPORARY IRANIAN ART

May 28 – August 20, 2009

Opening Reception: May 27, 6 to 8 p.m.

The Leila Taghinia-Milani Heller (LTMH) Gallery is presenting a group exhibition, Selseleh/Zelzeleh: Movers & Shakers in Contemporary Iranian Art, from May 28 through August 20, 2009. Comprising more than 50 seminal works from as many as 40 artists, Selseleh/Zelzeleh (loosely translated as Tradition/Tremor) seeks to illuminate the depth and richness of Iranian art from the post WWII generation to the present. A number of works, including paintings, sculpture, photography, works on paper, and video will be on view for the first time in the U.S. A fully-illustrated color catalogue will accompany the exhibition. Selseleh/Zelzeleh: Movers & Shakers in Contemporary Iranian Art, opening with a reception on May 27 from 6 to 8 p.m., coincides with the Chelsea Art Museum’s summer exhibition, Iran Inside Out, June 26-September 5, 2009, an exploration of the new Persian avant-garde.

The featured artists in Selseleh/Zelzeleh – some living in Iran, some living internationally – are all Iranian or of Iranian descent and share a common ground due to their rich culture and heritage. Alongside the most celebrated Persian artists such as Shirin Neshat, Y.Z. Kami, Reza Derakshani, Pouran Jinchi, Roya Akhavan, Farhad Moshiri, Farideh Lashai and Shoja Azari, the show is introducing newcomers including Mehdi Farhadian, Negar Ahkami, Shiva Ahmadi, Darius Yektai, and Bita Fayyazi. Affirming a continuous dialogue that exists between the generations, these artists explore a multiplicity of divergences from the past that are equally grounded in a respect for cultural continuity as well as in the freshness of youthful innovation. While borrowing from tradition, they have developed their own highly unique artistic language resulting in work that is bold, emotionally charged, and, at times, politically and socially motivated.

Among the highlights of Selseleh/Zelzeleh: Movers & Shakers in Contemporary Iranian Art is Iranian-born, New York-based artist Pouran Jinchi’s, Forough #3, 2008. A mix of Near Eastern calligraphy and abstract expressionism, her paintings, rife with intricate patterning, complex markings and subtle traceries, are meditative and holistic in nature. The literary origins of her art reflect her strong feeling for poetry, as she explores her Persian heritage and renders it contemporary.

Since 2006, Shoja Azari and Shahram Karimi have been collaborating on “video paintings,” a new form which examines stasis and movement at the juxtaposition of video and painting. What Remains (from the Oil Paintings Series), 2009, is a work that combines a video by Shoja Azari projected onto a painting by Shahram Karimi. Haunting and apocalyptic, the team’s seven-piece series of was inspired by searing images of the Kuwaiti oil fields that were set aflame in 1991 during the withdraw of the Iraqi army in the Persian Gulf War.

Grappling in form and content with the contradiction between beauty and brutality, Negar Ahkami’s painting, Herat II, 2009, depicts prostrating female nudes on a serpentine red carpet that leads to a mosque-like building. Through her work, she explores the contradiction between traditional Persian art and the menacing contemporary image that the West has of Iran.

Using each image as a tool to express her political agenda, Shiva Ahmadi’s visual language consists of symbolism, Middle Eastern patterns and Islamic architecture. Rendered in jewel-tone watercolors, Rocks, 2009, endeavors to show the instability and complexity in Middle Eastern cultures as they move toward modernity. Born in Tehran, Ahmadi was educated in Iran and the United States.

Selseleh/Zelzeleh: Movers & Shakers in Contemporary Iranian Art is the second exhibition co-curated by Dr. Layla Diba and Leila Heller, two leading authorities in the field. The opening reception on May 27 will also feature a book signing for “Different Sames: New Perspectives in Contemporary Iranian Art,” edited by Hossein Amirsadeghi.

Petite Peachy LOVES FIREFLY BOPPIN’ BARNYARD MUSICAL TIMER TOOTHBRUSH BY DR. FRESH

FIREFLY BOPPIN’ BARNYARD MUSICAL TIMER TOOTHBRUSH BY DR. FRESH

Peachy Deegan's sidekick, Petite Peachy, is not so wild about brushing her teeth. However, she has a new attitude where music is involved with this activity!

There’s a “note-able” new addition to Dr. Fresh’s stable of innovative oral care products -- the FireFly® Boppin’ Barnyard Musical Timer Toothbrush. Kids tend to tune out nagging, but they’ll be all ears – and all smiles – for a whimsical chorus of oinks, moos, and quacks to keep them company while brushing.

This cute innovation plays “Old MacDonald” for one minute (the length of time each row of teeth needs to be brushed) when the button in its handle is pressed. Kids brush until the music stops, then activate the song again to brush the second row of teeth. It was developed for ages 3 and up with an ergonomic design appropriate for a child’s small hand.

Dentists recommend toothbrushes be replaced every three months; FireFly Boppin Barnyard Musical Toothbrush stops playing its song after that time as a reminder to get a new toothbrush. It is available at CVS and Walgreens in Manhattan for $2.49.

Tyrant Lizard on the Auction Block Rare Dinosaur Skull to be Offered on June 1 in New York

From the scientific to the superbly decorative, astoundingly unique fossil specimens will be offered by international fine arts auctioneers Bonhams on June 1, 2007 during the firm’s Natural History auction in New York. The 525 lot sale offers a diverse group of high quality and distinctive mineral specimens, gold nuggets, lapidary works of art, gemstones and jewelry as well as exceptional fossils from prestigious collections around the world.

Leading the auction is a rare tyrannosaurid skull – one of only three or four Alioramus skulls to have been discovered (est. $120,000 - 140,000). Known as the ‘Tyrant Lizard from the Age of Dinosaurs,’ this rare specimen from the Late Cretaceous period was found in the Nemegt Formation, Gobi Desert, Central Asia. Although very little is known about this rare tyrannosaurid, Alioramus is smaller and more slender than its famous cousin the T-Rex, and boasts a higher tooth count. This animal was most likely a very swift hunter with the ability to be faster and more agile than many of its contemporaries. The present skull specimen is from an individual which would have measured over 20-feet in length and impressively displays the 76 serrated, knife-like teeth.

Also featured in the June auction is a well-documented Triceratops skull (pictured, left) from the Hell Creek Formation, North Dakota (est. $100,000 - 125,000). Unquestionably one of the most popular dinosaurs, Triceratops lived over 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous Period. The dinosaur is famous for its iconic three horns and large bony frill profile. Along with giving this creature lasting celebrity, the external defenses undoubtedly helped to protect the animal from its predatory contemporaries, such as T. Rex. The present skull specimen is beautifully preserved and exemplifies the famed behemoth of the ‘Age of Dinosaurs’.

A Large Jurassic Ichthyosaur specimen -- highly sought after by collectors-- will also be offered at auction this summer (est. $60,000 - 80,000). From the famous Holzmaden quarries, the Ichthyosaur is believed to have filled a similar ecological niche as today’s dolphin. Of all known reptiles, they were best adapted to a marine existence. A fine example of this fascinating inhabitant of the Jurassic seas, the present specimen displays expert preparation with all four flippers visible. The skeleton is virtually complete and displayed in an attractive lateral presentation.

The décor section of the sale will feature two monumental halves of an entire petrified wood tree aptly dubbed ‘The Twins’ (est. $125,000 - 150,000). From the Triassic period, the magnificent offering was discovered at the Chinle Formation, Northern Arizona. Staggering to the imagination is the number of hours and the degree of expertise required to remove, split and polish this ancient treasure which is evidenced by the mighty presence of the unique pair. The cut faces display brilliant red hues, earth tones, cream and black, augmented by a fine polish. Each petrified wood log measures approximately 8-feet tall.

Also featured amongst the strong selection of items suited to interior design is a collection of very important petrified wood slabs artfully inlayed with ancient fossilized wood and suitable for use as a tabletop or bench; works in polished quartz and citrine on illuminated bases as well as a diverse selection of framed and unframed fossilized items from the world famous Green River Formation.

Additional highlights will include an uncommon Alaskan Mammoth Tusk of impressive size (est. $20,000 - 25,000); ‘The Dragon’s Head’ (pictured, right), a zoomorphic gold nugget from Victoria, Australia weighing nearly two troy pounds (est. $35,000 - 45,000); a hand-sized gold nugget boasting a rich, buttery patina (est. $28,000 - 35,000); a baby snapping turtle from a distinguished private collection (est. $10,000-12,500) and the ultimate prize for the serious meteorite collector, a group of three Martian meteorites (est. $2,500 - 3,500).

Bonhams & Butterfields Natural History auctions are the largest of their kind, both in terms of number of lots and overall estimated value. The June 1st auction will include more than 500 lots and feature a diverse group of high quality and distinctive mineral specimens, gold nuggets, lapidary works of art, gemstones and jewelry in addition to exceptional fossils as well as numerous items of unique décor in the form of wall art and sculpture.

The illustrated catalogue is available online for review and purchase at

Afghanistan's Dazzling National Treasures—Hidden for 25 Years—Presented at Metropolitan Museum

Afghanistan's Dazzling National Treasures—Hidden for 25 Years—Presented at Metropolitan Museum

* Exhibition dates: June 23–September 20, 2009
* Exhibition location: Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Exhibition Hall
* Press preview: Monday, June 15, 10:00 a.m.–noon

Ancient Afghanistan—located at the crossroads of major trade routes, where it attracted invading armies and nomadic migrations—was home to some of the most complex, rich, and original civilizations on the continent of Asia. Opening at The Metropolitan Museum of Art this summer, the traveling exhibition Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures from the National Museum, Kabul, celebrates the country's unique role, as both the recipient of diverse cultural elements and the creator of distinctive styles of art from the Bronze Age into the Kushan period. The presentation also commemorates the heroic rescue of Afghanistan's national treasures long thought to have been destroyed. The exhibition features a rich selection of artworks from four archaeological sites. All works belong to the National Museum of Afghanistan in Kabul. Highlights include gold vessels from the Bronze Age Tepe Fullol hoard; superb works and architectural elements from the Hellenistic city of Aï Khanum; sculptural masterpieces in ivory, plaster medallions, bronzes, and Roman glass from Begram; and extraordinary turquoise-encrusted gold jewelry and ornaments from the nomadic tombs at Tillya Tepe.

The exhibition is made possible in part by Raymond and Beverly Sackler and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The exhibition was organized by the National Geographic Society and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, in association with The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

It is supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.

In 1978, archaeologists digging at the ancient site of Tillya Tepe in northern Afghanistan made an unprecedented and unexpected discovery: tombs of ancient nomads that had not been disturbed for two thousand years. Buried there were a nomadic chieftain and five women wearing sumptuous adornments such as swords, crowns, and clothing covered with tiny gold appliqués. When the country descended into war shortly after the find, the so-called Bactrian Hoard disappeared and was believed to be lost forever. In 2003, the world was stunned to learn that the priceless artifacts had been located intact in a bank vault within the presidential palace in Kabul. A heroic group of Afghans who have come to be called the "key holders" kept the location of these treasures—along with other masterpieces belonging to the National Museum, Kabul—a secret through 25 tumultuous, war-torn years.

"As we look at these fragile and delicately wrought works of art, we cannot help but be amazed at their survival from antiquity to the present time," commented Thomas P. Campbell, Director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. "And as we learn the dramatic story of their fate over the last 25 years, our appreciation for them can only deepen. We are honored to present these beautiful treasures at The Metropolitan Museum of Art—their final US stop on a three-year-long worldwide tour."

Speaking about the exhibition, His Excellency Said Tayeb Jawad, Ambassador of Afghanistan to the United States, remarked: "Afghanistan has always been the heart of Asia. Afghanistan's centrality in the Silk Road created a rich mosaic of cultures and civilizations. Although this mosaic was shattered by war and terror, both the spirit of the Afghan people and our cultural heritage survived. These priceless artifacts are a testament to the Afghan people and to the heroism of the brave and selfless Afghans who preserved and protected them. This exhibition is a celebration of Afghanistan as much as it is an expression of our appreciation for the global partnership between our ancient nation, the international community, and our friends in the United States."

Fredrik Hiebert, exhibition curator and National Geographic Archaeology Fellow, continued: "This exhibition is the culmination of many years of work by the Afghans. Without their courage and commitment, these objects would not exist today. Having worked closely with Afghan officials since 2003 on the preservation and inventory of the objects, I am honored to be part of the effort to share these treasures with audiences in the United States and ultimately to enhance the understanding of Afghanistan's rich cultural heritage."

Exhibition Overview
The exhibition is arranged by archaeological site and features new maps and media specially commissioned by the National Geographic Society. The display begins with objects from Tepe Fullol in northern Afghanistan. In 1966, farmers discovered the first evidence of a Bronze Age civilization in the region. The nearby Oxus riverbed may have provided the gold used to create the artifacts found in a burial cache at the site. A highlight is a gold bowl fragment dating around 2000 B.C., depicting bearded bulls, an image familiar in the art of Mesopotamia.

The second section focuses on Aï Khanum, one of the largest Greek-style cities founded in a region of Asia that had been conquered by Alexander the Great. Several buildings—a theater and gymnasium built in the Greek style—bear witness to the city's Greek origins, as do scientific instruments such as sundials. Works from the site show the Mediterranean influence in the area between the fourth and second centuries B.C. Sculptures and other objects from this site include a stone portrait of the Gymnasium director, a bronze image of Herakles, and a gilded silver plaque with the goddess Cybele, exhibiting a mixture of Greek and Near Eastern imagery .

The excavations at Begram, the third site, yielded works dating from between the first and second centuries A.D. Among the contents of two sealed rooms were remarkable luxury goods, including more than 180 Roman glass vessels and spectacular ivories carved in an Indian style, which are among the earliest preserved works of their kind. They depict women and children in domestic settings, as well as Indianized motifs such as the makara, a crocodile-like creature. These works shed light on the role of Afghanistan in the exchanges between East and West along the legendary Silk Road.

The fourth section of the exhibition focuses on Tillya Tepe and includes impressive inlaid gold objects found in the six nomadic tombs that were unearthed there. The individuals buried in the tombs belonged to the same group of nomadic peoples who first overran Bactria around 145 B.C. and brought an end to the Graeco-Bactrian kingdoms that had flourished in the region. The tombs of a chieftain and five women contained different kinds and quantities of objects, which may reflect their relative status. Dating from the first century A.D., the works include an exquisite crown and other luxury objects, most made of solid gold and many encrusted with turquoise and garnets. Although it is not known where the gold originated, the turquoise is probably from northeastern Iran and the other semiprecious stones may have been obtained from more distant regions through trade. The adornments found at the site display a fascinating blend of nomadic, Greek, Indian, and Chinese imagery. In addition, the closest parallels for the typically nomadic gold crown worn by the one of the women are found much later in fifth and sixth century A.D. tombs of the Silla Kingdom in Korea. Tillya Tepe thus raises compelling questions about the geographic and temporal span of nomadic traditions in Asia.

Also included in the exhibition is a 13-minute film, narrated by Afghan American author, Khaled Hosseini, and produced by National Geographic, which tells of the original discovery and excavation of these collections and their dramatic rediscovery in 2003.

Related Programs and Credits
A variety of educational programs have been organized to complement the exhibition, including a symposium, gallery talks, films, a family festival, a workshop for teachers, verbal imaging tours for people with visual impairments (on request), and guided group tours for people with disabilities (on request).

The exhibition was developed by Fredrik T. Hiebert, National Geographic Society Archaeology Fellow, Washington, D.C. The presentation at the Metropolitan Museum is overseen by Joan Aruz, Curator in Charge, and Elisabetta Valtz Fino, Curator, both in the Department of Ancient Near Eastern Art, and Denise Patry Leidy, Curator, Department of Asian Art.

The exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue, Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures from the National Museum Kabul, published by National Geographic Books. Edited by Fredrik Hiebert and Pierre Cambon, the publication will be available in the Museum's book shop ($30 paperback).

MOEN INTRODUCES ioDIGITAL™ – THE ULTIMATE BLEND OF TECHNOLOGY AND INDULGENCE- Peachy Deegan is excited about it!

MOEN INTRODUCES ioDIGITAL™ –
THE ULTIMATE BLEND OF TECHNOLOGY AND INDULGENCE
Innovative Technology Brings the Benefits of Personalization to the Bathroom
To Create a Truly Unique Vertical Spa, Shower or Roman Tub Experience

From U2 to Frank Sinatra… your iPod has your favorite songs personalized the way you choose, to meet your every musical desire. Your laptop? Calls up your preferred websites with the touch of a button. And your Google page? Pulls up your calendar – by day, month, year… however you choose. There’s no doubt we’re living in a digital world – but one that we can easily personalize to fit our every desire.

So, why not personalize your shower or bathing experience with a touch of technology?

Leave it to the minds at Moen, the number one faucet brand in North America, to do just that. Moen is bringing the benefits of technology to the bathroom with the launch of ioDIGITAL™. This innovative, easy-to-use interface gives consumers the ability to set and maintain water temperature and flow with electronic precision. The ioDIGITAL interface is extremely versatile and is available for three applications: vertical spa, shower and Roman tub.

“With ioDIGITAL, it’s like having your own personal digital ‘butler’ – that will set your vertical spa with the perfect temperature and flow; turn on your shower from across the room or while still in bed; or even top off your bath with hot water,” said Mark Knurek, senior product manager, Moen. “And the best part is that you can do all of this as easily as if you were programming a car radio. It’s that simple.”

The foundation of ioDIGITAL is its intelligent interface. Providing quick, visual feedback, LED indicators flash until the requested settings are achieved – no more guessing if your shower or bath is ready. Each LED on the temperature indicator represents a precise temperature range, which allows the consumer to adjust the exact temperature to their liking. Even if water is turned on in other parts of the home, ioDIGITAL will virtually eliminate any noticeable fluctuation in water temperature. The LEDs will even alert the consumer if the hot water supply happens to run low.

One of the greatest advantages of ioDIGITAL technology is the ability to program preferred settings into memory. Up to four different presets can be easily programmed within seconds, allowing every member of the family their own unique setting – from an invigorating morning shower to a relaxing evening escape, and even a child’s bedtime bath.

ioDIGITAL technology is powered by an electronic valve that manages the hot and cold water supply to precisely maintain the perfect temperature. This innovative valve can be located up to 30 feet from the tub or shower – in a linen closet, vanity, basement or under the tub – for easy installation and retrofit flexibility.

“With ioDIGITAL, Moen has established a new benchmark for showering sophistication and intelligence in the bathroom industry,” explained Knurek. “We’re truly leading the development of the digital showering genre and positioning digital as one of the hottest product sectors in the bathroom market.”

ioDIGITAL Vertical Spa

For the ultimate blend of technology and indulgence, the ioDIGITAL vertical spa offers command of precise temperature and flow, four custom presets and one-touch activation of multiple water spray outlets. The consumer can choose custom settings with a showerhead, body spray; handshower or rainshower… or choose them all.

Specific features include:

* Four programmable presets

o LCD screen which displays the current temperature, active spray outlets and preset activation
o Pause feature, which briefly interrupts the shower while the user shampoos or shaves, then returns to the previous settings
o The interface is available in Chrome, Brushed Nickel and Oil Rubbed Bronze finishes
o Optional remote control (available in Chrome or Black) offers the ability to turn the shower on from across the room or while still in bed

The ioDIGITAL vertical spa trim components are built on Moen’s revolutionary M•PACT® common valve system, which allows a homeowner to change the spa style or finish without having to change the valve. The ioDIGITAL vertical spa trim is available in a neutral design which beautifully complements any home décor.

ioDIGITAL Shower

Similar to the vertical spa functionality, the ioDIGITAL shower interface will recall a preferred temperature and flow at the push of a button, and the easy-to-read LED indicators will alert the user when the preferred shower matches the settings. No longer will homeowners have to guess if their shower has reached the right temperature – ioDIGITAL will alert them when it is ready.

Specific features include:

* Four programmable presets

o Simple dials (one for temperature/one for flow) which allow consumers to quickly and accurately set the preferred combination of temperature and flow
o Pause feature, which briefly interrupts the shower while the user shampoos or shaves, then returns to the previous setting
o The wall-mounted interface is available in Chrome, Brushed Nickel and Oil Rubbed Bronze
o Optional remote control (available in Chrome or Black) offers the ability to turn on the shower from across the room or while still in bed

ioDIGITAL Roman Tub

One of the most unique applications in the ioDIGITAL suite is the Roman tub. This revolutionary product will not only fill the tub to the perfect temperature, but even fill it to the desired level.

Specific features include:

* Three programmable presets

o Child Lock feature disables all controls and remote operation for added safety
o Interface is waterproof, allowing the user to safely install in or near the bath area
o The wall-mounted interface is available in Chrome, Brushed Nickel and Oil Rubbed Bronze finishes
o Optional remote control (available in Chrome or Black) offers the ability to turn on the tub from across the room – up to 30 feet away; or press the Hot Top Off feature to easily warm your bath by filling the tub at the lowest flow setting with the hottest water temperature

The ioDIGITAL Roman tub is compatible with a wide range of Moen’s Roman tub styles to coordinate with any decorating style.

“For decades, homeowners have trusted Moen to deliver the most reliable, durable, high-quality products,” added Knurek. “That’s the icing on the cake with ioDIGITAL – homeowners will get the benefits of innovative technology in the bath, backed by a name they can trust… Moen.”

MOVERS AND SHAKERS: Sara Blakely, Founder of Spanx

Sara Blakely wanted footless bodyshaping pantyhose to wear with her cream-colored pants and open-toed shoes, but she couldn't find them anywhere. Frustrated consumer turned entrepreneur, Sara took $5,000 in savings, invented and patented footless pantyhose, and began her adventure in the $2 billion male-dominated hosiery industry.

Two years later, with her first pair of SPANX in hand, Sara cold-called and landed the top retail stores across the country. Selling over 50,000 pair in its first three months from the back of her apartment, Sara Blakely’s SPANX revitalized an industry in a 10-year slump. Her SPANX footless pantyhose even captured the attention of Oprah and landed on Oprah’s “Favorite Things” list.

Obsessed with creating comfortable, slimming garments that minimize figure flaws, Sara reinvented shapewear with innovative designs and smart features and won the hearts of fashion-loving women, from Oprah Winfrey to Beyonce and Gwyneth Paltrow. Spanx has developed and launched more than 100 styles —with names like Bra-llelujah, Hide & Sleek, Power Panties, Slim-Cognito, and Topless Socks — all designed to be innovative, comfortable, slimming, and stylish.

If you haven’t seen Sara flashing her SPANX on QVC, you may have seen her jumping off of a cliff or sharing tea with Richard Branson 10,000 feet in the sky. Sara appeared weekly on Fox, setting daring world-records, meeting Nelson Mandela, and leading successful business challenges as a cast member on The Rebel Billionaire: Branson’s Quest for the Best. As the first runner-up on the show, Sara received a $750,000 check from Branson to pursue her dream to start a foundation to empower women on a global scale. Sara launched The Sara Blakely Foundation in 2006 and raised $600,000 to provide college scholarships for 278 young women in South Africa. Her foundation focuses on empowering women through entrepreneurship and education.

Remaining self-funded and profitable ever since Sara used her own savings to start the company, Spanx continues to show incredible growth, celebrating well over $250 million in retail sales in 2007. Spanx are sold in America’s finest upscale stores and boutiques in the U.S., including Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdales, and Parisian, as well as upscale boutiques and retailers in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K.

As the leader of the shapewear revolution, Sara wanted to find a way to share her slimming secrets with even more women. In 2006, the shapewear revolution reached new heights when Sara launched ASSETS by Sara Blakely, a new brand for Target. Sara is thrilled to give better underwear options to women everywhere – and to give back. A portion of each SPANX and ASSETS purchase goes to The Sara Blakely Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting and empowering women around the world, and other causes that support women. Visit www.SaraBlakelyFoundation.com for more information on the foundation.

Sara’s story and Spanx products have been featured on everything from The Oprah Winfrey Show, TODAY, Forbes, E!, and Glamour — to Vogue, People, InStyle, New York Times, Vanity Fair, and now as a Mover and Shaker on Whom You Know. Sara has been named Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year and “Georgia’s Woman of the Year.” Sara is a native of Clearwater, Florida, and a graduate of Florida State University.

Peachy Deegan interviewed Sara Blakely for Whom You Know.

Peachy Deegan: What is your favorite shop?
Sara Blakely: Jeffrey

What is your favorite drink?
A good glass of wine

What is your favorite NYC book?
I just received Miroslav Sasek’s book “This Is New York” for my baby. It’s full of tongue-in-cheek humor and is illustrated so beautifully; I can’t wait to read it to my baby!

Where is your favorite place to be in NYC?
Central Park. I love being outside and I think it’s important to give yourself time free of any interruptions, so I turn my phone off and let my mind wander. I do some of my best thinking here!

What is your favorite NYC restaurant?
Il Mulino

What is your favorite thing to do in NYC that you can do nowhere else?
To walk! Whether I have a destination in mind or I just wander leisurely, I always seem to discover something new that only NYC has to offer.

Whom You Know saw your new line at Saks Fifth Avenue-Spanx with a sexy twist. Can you tell us how it came about?
I created SPANX to make shapewear comfortable, and I created Haute Contour to make it beautiful. Each piece of this lingerie-inspired collection is shaping, sumptuous, and ready to be seen in!

Where is Spanx carried in Manhattan?
Spanx is carried at Saks Fifth Ave, Bloomingdales, Henri Bendel, and boutiques like La Petite Coquette.

How did you like being on the rebel billionaire?
I loved being on Rebel Billionaire. In addition to meeting two of my heros, Richard Branson and Nelson Mandela, I overcame my worst fear by scaling a hot air balloon and having tea on top with Richard Branson! I’m so thankful to him for giving me the $750,000 to start my foundation and for coming here to Atlanta to help me launch it.

How can more women become successful businesswomen?
I always encourage women entrepreneurs starting out to believe in your idea, trust your instincts, and don’t be afraid to fail. I think fear prevents so many people from pursuing their ideas. When I was younger, at the dinner table my father would ask my brother and me what we failed at, and if we didn’t have a story of something that we failed at that day, he would be disappointed. It was this great reverse psychology because we’d get excited to have a story. I’m so thankful for that, because now as an adult, I’m not afraid to fail. To me, failure is not trying, rather than not succeeding.

What future ideas do you have for Spanx?
I'm very inspired to make certain articles of clothing that I won't disclose that are in the works right now, with certain elements of Spanx hidden in them that will be fabulous. There are about three categories in apparel that we are aggressively pursuing and have been making prototypes and working on for, some of them, up to two years.

What direction do you see your Foundation headed?
We have so much more to come. Lately, we’ve been involved in President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Market Women’s Fund to help mobilize women leaders and improve issues for women all over the world. We’re currently building a house for a local Atlanta woman with Habitat for Humanity. The foundation focuses on finding the future female entrepreneurs and leaders of the world, at home and abroad, and giving them the “leg-up” they need to succeed.

What have you learned most through the evolution of Spanx?
I learned not to take no for an answer and to trust your gut. It took me two years from the time I had the idea for Spanx until the time I had a product in hand ready to sell into stores. I must have heard the word “no” a thousand times! If you believe in your idea 100%, don’t let anyone stop you!
