#WhomWeMiss #RIP #RodGilbert #NHLPeachy @NHL #MoverandShaker #HockeyLegend #AndreLacroix on Rod and @NHL National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman today released the following statement on the passing of Hockey Hall of Famer Rod Gilbert

"Rod was not only a great hockey player. He treated everybody like they were his best friend. He always had a smile on his face. I don't believe he had an enemy in the world. Players on the other teams respected and loved him. He was a class individual who loved everybody he came in contact with. Rod was the face of the Rangers even after he retired from hockey. He will be missed by a lot of people. He was such a great ambassador for the greatest game on earth."
-Andre Lacroix
National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman today released the following statement on the passing of Hockey Hall of Famer Rod Gilbert:
“Rod Gilbert’s impact on the National Hockey League and the New York Rangers over the past 62 years was profound – both on and off the ice,” said NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. “As a player, he was revered by his teammates, respected by his opponents and absolutely beloved by Rangers’ fans. Throughout his 18 NHL seasons – all with the Rangers, he was among the greatest offensive players of his era and truly entertained fans across the League on a nightly basis. His contributions to the game were appropriately recognized with hockey’s highest individual honor – induction to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982. Rod’s impact on our game was equaled, if not surpassed, in his retirement. For 32 years, he was one of the greatest ambassadors that our League has seen in its 104-year history. The time that he devoted to countless charitable causes and the passion that he brought to every interaction with hockey fans at not only Madison Square Garden but across the NHL was both incredible and inspiring.
“On a personal level, I will miss Rod’s friendship and love for the game. I extend my deepest sympathies to his wife, Judy and his children Chantal, Justin, Holly and Brooke and his seven grandchildren. The game has lost a true friend.”

Private Reception to be Held in Montreal at 4 Nations Face-Off Tournament

The National Hockey League Alumni Association (NHLAA) is proud to announce that the members of the 1972 Team Canada roster will be the recipients of the 2025 Keith Magnuson “Man Of The Year” Award. The NHLAA created this award to honour NHL Alumni who have personified the intangibles of perseverance, commitment, and teamwork developed through the game into a successful post-career transition. A private reception and hot stove panel will be held on Friday, February 14 (1 p.m. – 3 p.m. ET) at the Maison Principale in Montreal in conjunction with the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament.

“For many Canadians, the 1972 Summit Series remains one of the most iconic moments in our nation's history. The team's resilience, unity, and patriotism during their dramatic victory over the Soviet Union have solidified their place as national heroes in the hearts of Canadians from coast to coast to coast,” said Glenn Healy, president and executive director of the NHLAA. "For countless hockey fans, they have vivid memories of watching the pivotal Game 8 in school gymnasiums and amongst family and friends huddled around living room televisions. We are immensely proud of the NHL Alumni members who played a key role in this landmark moment for Canadian history."

In April 1972, Canada and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) agreed on the framework to play an eight-game series in September later that year, with four games across Canada, and four games in Moscow. After a back-and-forth series that found Canada down 1-3-1 after five games, Paul Henderson played the hero in game six with the game-winning goal in the second period. For game seven, a pair of first period goals from Phil Esposito tied the game at 2-2. Late in the third, tied 3-3, it was Henderson once again netting the game-winning goal for Canada. Then on September 28, 1972, Canada defeated the USSR thanks to Henderson’s late-game heroics, who found himself alone in front of the USSR net with 34 seconds left, scoring what is now widely known as ‘The Goal’ which cemented the team’s legendary status.

The members of the 1972 Team Canada roster boast an incredible 58 Stanley Cups, 143 All-Star Game appearances, 9 Art Ross Trophies, 8 Georges Vezina Trophies, 7 Hart Memorial Trophies, 5 Lady Byng Trophies, 5 Bill Masterton Trophies, 4 Calder Memorial Trophies, 4 Ted Lindsay Trophies, 3 Conn Smythe Trophies, 1 Frank J. Selke Trophy and 2 Jack Adams Awards. The roster also includes 13 Hockey Hall of Fame members and 11 of the NHL’s 100 Greatest Players. The entire team was inducted en masse to their merited position in the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame on November 2, 2005.

As best-on-best international hockey descends on Montreal, the 1972 team will be honoured at the NHLAA’s annual ‘Man Of The Year’ Award Reception. Featuring the Highland Creek Pipe Band and a hot stove moderated by Ron MacLean of Hockey Night in Canada, the ceremony promises to be a memorable occasion celebrating one of the game's most recognizable and transformative teams. The honoured attendees of the ‘72 team include Don Awrey, Red Berenson, Yvan Cournoyer, Ken Dryden, Paul Henderson, Guy Lapointe, Frank Mahovlich, Brad Park, Mickey Redmond, Serge Savard, and Rod Seiling.

The NHLAA is proud to carry on the legacy of this tremendous team by adding them to their notable lineage of past 'Man Of The Year' award recipients that includes icons of the game such as Jean Beliveau, our friend Gordie Howe, Mark Messier, Mario Lemieux, Borje Salming, Mats Sundin & Nicklas Lidstrom among many others.

This was one of the best events in Manhattan ever and if it happens again we would highly recommend it!  The venue, atmosphere, crowd, and overall event were outstanding, and of course the cause was the most worthwhile component of the evening. Proceeds benefitted The Lifeline Humanitarian Organization, founded by patron Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Katherine of Serbia in 1993. Lifeline continues to provide the most desperately needed humanitarian aid for Serbia’s medical facilities, handicapped children and orphans. Serbia has the largest refugee population in Europe. The country is also overwhelmed by both the highest incidence of breast cancer in Europe and the highest infant mortality rate. Lifeline is responsible for providing incubators to neonatal intensive care units throughout the country. For more event information, visit: www.princesball.org

WHEN:           Friday, February 5, 2010
          9:00 p.m. – 1:00 a.m.

WHERE:        Cipriani 42nd Street
          110 East 42nd Street, NY

Star Vodka was the premium drink of the evening of course and was a major draw for all guests; normally you will see Peachy with Champagne but not when Star Vodka is an option!  In case you missed it, here is an update:
Peachy Deegan really loves Star Vodka.  We haven't been counting every time we have mentioned it (actually we haven't been counting at all; we don't stop that is why we are approaching 3k posts) so out of curiosity we typed it in our dashboard and quite literally this post will be the 50th time we have mentioned it!  This was just a coincidence.  If you want to see for yourself put Star Vodka in the search bar at the top...

Last night Peachy Deegan became Cinderella and went to the Prince's Ball at Cipriani but to us it was really the Star Vodka ball.  Sure, there were three very nice Princes that we met but Star Vodka was the royal libation.  You will remember our friend Charles Ferri, (see his Mover and Shaker piece here)and Charles gave us an update on his fabulous brand.
Charles answered some questions for the Whom You Know Star Vodka enthusiasts.

Peachy Deegan: Since we reviewed it last summer, what new developments are there with Star Vodka?
Charles Ferri: First and foremost, we are continuing to provide a super high quality product and we have stayed true to what we are and that is an American Luxury vodka, showcased at the finest parties, events, and locations.  We have started to grow and add new locations but very cautiously.  I feel its important to take our time and make sure we are doing the right thing for our customers and tastemakers.  We actually say "no" more than we say "yes" to adding stores and venues, people say I'm crazy but I truly believe that is how you build a strong brand with a loyal following and it doesn't hurt that we have the smoothest vodka in the world!

How did Star Vodka become involved with the Prince's Ball?
I was asked by Catherine Saxton of the Saxton Group, her PR company.  She is the Chairperson of the Prince's Ball and brought the whole team together.  The minute she started talking to me about the event I knew it was a perfect charity and event for Star Vodka and decided to personally get involved by agreeing to be a Co-chair on the event.  I am so pleased with being involved because it turned out to be one of the best events we have done so far.

What goes on behind the scenes in planning an event of this nature that most people would not realize?
haha - your looking for gossip and dirt huh? [No silly Charles you won't find that on Whom You Know!]  Well, let me just say if you have never been involved in an event of this size and nature you are in for a treat!  It is like one big roller coaster - highs and lows, conflicts, and disagreements, politics and heated arguments for months!  Yes, months! But what I realized as I went through this is we went through all these ups and downs because people really cared about throwing an incredible event for charity and making sure everyone that spent their hard earned money to come had the best time.  That is what these events are all about - having an amazing night in a great venue like Cipriani, drinking the best vodka in the world, and knowing that you are making a difference.  [The event really was absolutely spectacular; you will be reading about it in Nightlight next week.]

We liked your tuxedo.  Is Star Vodka going to develop an alliance with Versace now?
Thank you for noticing!  Actually I met Donatella Versace in London a few years ago and we were all going to a black tie event and I had nothing to wear!  She brought me into one of her stores and they fitted me with the most amazing tux right there and I went off to the event.  She is such a sweetheart and never asked for it back so lets keep it on the down low. haha
Did you arrive at Cipriani on Liberty Jet?  (just kidding).  In all seriousness, where is Star Vodka being sold now and where can we find it other than the store in the high 20's and Park other than when we fly on LJ?
Christian Deputy from Liberty Jet wanted to fly over Cipriani and have me parachute out but Bloomberg thought it was a bit over the top so we decided to cancel.  You can check out our website www.starvodka.net and see the locations we are currently in and always order online and we will ship Star Vodka directly to you.  We will be expanding to a bunch more in the next few months especially in the hamptons.  We will have a very big presence there this summer, we already have over 10 accounts in some of the finest liquor stores and restaurants out there so as long as we continue on that path I am happy to expand.

Were you pleased with the evening?
LOVED THE EVENT!!!

Thank you Charles.

NHL and Government of Canada Dedicate Plaque at Historic Windsor to Commemorate League’s 100th Birthday

To celebrate the Centennial birthday of the National Hockey League, Commissioner Gary Bettman; Montreal Canadiens owner Geoff Molson; NHL General Manager David Poile, on behalf of the League’s GMs; Hall of Famers Ray Bourque, Yvan Cournoyer, Rod Gilbert, Dave Keon, Frank Mahovlich and Denis Savard; and representatives from the Government of Canada today dedicated a plaque recognizing The Windsor Hotel/Le Windsor as the birthplace of the League.

“Today, in the presence of so many of our great legends and executives, in the home city of some of our great memories, at this very moment, which no one could have imagined 100 years ago, the National Hockey League proudly joins the Government of Canada in honoring our history and celebrating Le Windsor as the place of our birth on Nov. 26, 1917,” Commissioner Bettman said at the dedication ceremony in Le Windsor’s Versailles Ballroom.

“Legendary hockey writer Elmer Ferguson, who witnessed it all, described that November Monday in 1917 as ‘dreary’ and ‘cold.’ He described the meeting room where our League was founded as ‘a plain and simple room, rented for the occasion.’

In the century that would follow, the dreary cold would be brightened and heated by the passion and fervor of the hockey fans in this wonderful city – and many others. The ‘plain and simple room’ would lead us to remarkable, transformational venues in places like Vancouver and Florida, here in Montreal and Los Angeles, and even Las Vegas. It would take us to places like Stockholm and Shanghai, London and Beijing.

“As we celebrate our first 100 years and look forward to launching our second century, we will never forget that it all began right here. This is the heartland of our history. We stand just a few blocks from Victoria Skating Rink – where the first indoor hockey game under organized rules was played on March 3, 1875. This is where Lord Stanley saw his first hockey game at the Montreal Winter Carnival on Feb. 4, 1889.

“We stand just a few blocks from McGill University, which boasts such alumni as James Creighton, who defined the rules used in that first organized indoor game – and also played in it. Another McGill alum, Mike Babcock, tomorrow night will coach the Toronto Maple Leafs against the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre, also just a few blocks from here.

“We’re barely a mile from site of the Forum, an historic site for virtually every one of the legends with us today. On April 9, 1964, in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Semifinals, Dave Keon scored all three goals in the 3-1 Toronto victory that would send the Maple Leafs to the Stanley Cup Final against Detroit. On Feb. 24, 1968, Rod Gilbert took 16 shots on the Montreal net and scored four goals as the New York Rangers recorded a 6-1 triumph at the Forum. The only player to record more shots on goal in a regular-season game also is with us today: Ray Bourque, who has a nearby arena named for him in his native St. Laurent, Que., took 19 shots against Quebec’s Ron Tugnutt in Boston on March 21, 1991. At the Forum on March 21, 1973, Frank Mahovlich scored his 500th career goal in a 3-2 victory over Vancouver. The only four players to beat him to 500? Rocket Richard, Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull and Jean Beliveau. On New Year’s Eve, 1975, at the Forum, Yvan Cournoyer scored the 3-1 goal in one of the most epic games in NHL history – the Canadiens’ 3-3 tie against the vaunted ‘Red Army.’ And on June 9, 1993, when it was my privilege to present the Stanley Cup for the first time – to Canadiens captain Guy Carbonneau – the person he handed it to, and the first person to actually lift the Cup at the Forum that night, was Denis Savard.

“We’re honored these legends could join us today. We’re so pleased to stand mere blocks from the Queen Elizabeth Hotel – home in 1963 to the first NHL Draft. And across the park from us is the Sun-Life Building, home to our League’s offices for so many years.

“When you come to this historic hockey city, you feel the heartbeat of our League, the pulse of our game. You see the sweaters, you hear the debates in two languages – and at every Canadiens home game, you hear the whistles of more than 20,000 referees.

“The NHL was born here and it will live here forever. And now, with the dedication of this plaque, Le Windsor’s designation as sacred hockey ground is official and eternal. We thank our forebears and we celebrate all who have contributed to the growth of our League – and our game.

“Most important, we are grateful to our fans, the lifeblood of our growth for a century.”

Commissioned by Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada and Parks Canada, the plaque inscription reads:

The National Hockey League

Founded here in November 1917, the NHL holds a special place in Canadians’ hearts. After expanding to the United States in 1924 and gaining exclusive access to the prestigious Stanley Cup in 1927, it became the world’s predominant hockey league, growing in popularity through radio and television broadcasts and captivating generations of fans with the speed and skill of the game. The NHL’s top players have been recognized as national icons and international superstars, while its champion teams have set high standards of excellence, inspiring people of all ages to participate in and enjoy Canada’s national winter sport.

READ THIS: 100 Ranger Greats: Superstars, Unsung Heroes and Colorful Characters by Russ Cohen, John Halligan and Adam Raider

It is 100 degrees out in Manhattan!  There is no hockey now, but one great way to beat the heat is to think about fabulous New York Rangers hockey games!  Peachy Deegan is here to put you in a chilly state of mind....A
re you enjoying the World Cup, Wimbledon, and the like, but finding yourself wishing for the Blue Shirts in Madison Square Garden?  They may not be playing, but you can read about them in 100 Ranger Greats and there is a player in this book for everyone.

Of course, as he also is from Connecticut and went to Boston College (although he only attended his freshman year we believe), Brian Leetch is number one.  We totally agree with this choice but believe that there should have been 2 number ones-Upcoming Mover and Shaker Rod Gilbert is #2 and we'd put him as co-number one.  Remember Judy and Rod Gilbert's excellent costumes from the Star Vodka ball:http://www.whomyouknow.com/2010/02/nightlight-hrh-crown-prince-alexander.html

The players are counted down from highest number to lowest, but as Peachy cannot stand to be in suspense she almost read this book backwards.  Among other favorites of ours are Pierre LaRouche, #94: we saw him play in Hartford in the 1980's quite often and was one of Peachy's earliest kisses on the cheek at an autograph session when she was about six, much to the dismay of the older teenage girls there at the time; #90 Henrik Lundqvist, current goalie with amazing skills and Henrik if you are reading contact Peachy to be a Mover and Shaker please; #89 Brian Mullen, you've got to love a kid that grew up in Hell's kitchen who's dad drove the zamboni for the Rangers we believe we have heard; #84 Jaromir Jagr, this almost needs no explanation-Jarmoir is a hockey god and we wish you were still here; #68 Wayne Gretzky, this needs even less explanation, here is one of our favorite Gretzky quotes, not from the book but a personal favorite of Peachy Deegan:

A reporter interviewing Wayne Gretzky said: "Wayne, I don't get it. I've been watching you play for years, what makes you such a great hockey player? You're not the best skater. You're not the best puck handler. You're certainly not the meanest, most intimidating guy. Why are you so much better than everybody else in the world?" Gretzky's reply was: "Everybody else skates to where the puck is. I skate to where I think the puck is headed."; and we could go on and on about different players but the point is, we want you to read the book.

The history of the sport of hockey, particularly in New York, is also a focus of this book as it looks at the 100 Ranger Greats on a historical basis.  Totally comprehensive, it is a must read for everyone that loves hockey, and if you don't love hockey, we highly recommend you begin doing so!

Whom You Know highly recommends 100 Ranger Greats!

***

In 1926, hockey fans welcomed the New York Rangers to the NHL. Since then, more than 900 players have worn the colors of the Rangers and won the devotion of fans in New York and beyond. 100 Ranger Greats is about the best of the best of these players—the legends of yesteryear and the heroes of today, the men whose accomplishments on the ice have thrilled fans for over eight decades. But who are the best? Of the 900-plus players, who are the ones that stand out in the team’s storied history? Many are easily recognizable by even the most casual of hockey fans—Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and Jaromir Jagr are just a few of these superstars – but no team is made up of its stars alone. There are always the players who aren’t as well known in the public eye but who bring skills and character that make the whole team buzz and help to win championships. They might have played in the earliest days of media coverage—no websites, blogs or internet radio to raise their profiles to household names. Players like Andy Aitkenhead, Arnie Brown or Lorne Chabot to name just three.

Through research and personal interviews, and with the addition of over 200 color and black and white photos, 100 Ranger Greats presents personal profiles that combine statistics with personal and often humorous stories so that the reader gets a real understanding of that man’s life as a player in the National Hockey League and with the New York Rangers.

A richly illustrated history and a fascinating and entertaining look at a cast of colorful characters, 100 Ranger Greatsis for the young fan who wants to learn about the New York Rangers history and the veteran looking for stories about the players they grew up with. For every Rangers fan who wants to know their team and its history better, this is the book.

100 RANGER GREATS (Wiley, October 2009, $34.95/Cloth, ISBN: ISBN 978-0-470-73619-7), celebrates over 80 years of New York Rangers hockey and ranks, for the first time ever, the team’s 100 greatest players.

Co-authored by career Ranger experts Russ Cohen, John Halligan, and Adam Raider, 100 RANGER GREATS ranks the team’s greatest players and provides in-depth anecdotal essays on each, along with dramatic photography, much of which has never been published before.
“This book will definitely spark debates among Rangers fans, and it’s designed to do just that,” said Halligan, a public relations executive with the Rangers and the National Hockey League for 44 years. “We are expecting a lot of feedback, both positive and negative, especially when you get to the top ten. We’re ready for that.”

“All of the players on our list were graded according to their contributions to the overall success of the teams on which they played,” said Cohen. “Then we factored in individual achievements such as points scored, awards won, popularity and length of service.”

“This is an exhaustive list, and in many instances, a painstaking one to compile,” commented Raider. “It has 26 members of the Hockey Hall of Fame, an even dozen goaltenders, nine members of the 1994 Stanley Cup team, four Dons, three pairs of siblings, two Finns, a Civil War buff, and even a ‘Polish Prince.’”

Over the course of their long history, the Rangers have been the subject of 25-30 major books, but never has such a comprehensive listing of the team’s best players been attempted.

Russ Cohen is a die-hard sports fan and co-host of two hockey programs on XM Satellite Radio. He is one of the founders of a highly visited network of websites at www.sportsology.net and has hosted live webcasts from the NHL All-Star Game, the NHL Entry Draft, the Heritage Classic, and the Hockey Hall of Fame. He has also contributed to NHL.com and Goalie News magazine. Cohen lives in Glassboro, New Jersey.

The author of three previous books about the Rangers and a 2007 recipient of the prestigious Lester Patrick Trophy for outstanding service to hockey in the United States, John Halligan spent 24 years with the New York Rangers as Public Relations Director, Business Manager and Vice President of Communications. He lives in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey.

#NHLStats about the New York Rangers, who are headed to the postseason for a second straight year and 62nd time in franchise history. New York clinched a berth in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs by virtue of the Sabres’ loss and the Panthers’ regulation defeat.

1. The Rangers will look to build upon a trip to the 2022 Eastern Conference Final, a run that saw them tie a franchise record with five straight wins while facing elimination and become the fourth team in NHL history to win multiple rounds in a playoff year after facing a multi-game deficit (they trailed 3-1 in R1 vs. PIT and 2-0 in R2 vs. TBL). Four of New York’s past five series have seen a team take a 2-0 series advantage (NYR led in 2022 CF vs. TBL and trailed in 2017 R2 vs. OTT, 2020 SCQ vs. CAR & 2022 R2 vs. CAR).

2. The Rangers have reached at least the Conference Finals four times in the past 11 postseasons, defeating the Canadiens (2014) and losing to the Lightning (2015 & 2022) and Devils (2012). New York’s four Conference Finals appearances since 2012 are the second most among all teams over that span behind Tampa Bay (6).

3. Chris Kreider (34-21—55 in 100 GP) is the only player who remains with the Rangers after dressing for the club in the 2014 Stanley Cup Final. He had 13 points that year and now sits one goal from surpassing Rod Gilbert for the most career playoff goals in franchise history and two points from tying Don Maloney on its playoff points list. Kreider (12 PPG) also needs one power-play goal to surpass Brian Leetch (12) and tie Adam Graves (13) for the most in Rangers’ playoff history.

4. Patrick Kane (52-80—132 in 136 GP) and Vladimir Tarasenko (41-19—60 in 90 GP) have a combined 93-99—192 in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, including four Stanley Cup wins (Kane: 3, Tarasenko: 1) and a Conn Smythe Trophy (Kane in 2013). They rank first and second, respectively, on New York for career playoff goals and points. Kane has the third-most career playoff points among U.S.-born players (within reach of Mike Modano and Chris Chelios), while Tarasenko is one of six players with 40+ playoff goals since 2013.

5. Patrick Kane (3 w/ CHI) can become the only active player with at least four Stanley Cup wins. Since 1996-97, only six players have won 4+ Cups: Kris Draper (4 w/ DET), Tomas Holmstrom (4 w/ DET), Nicklas Lidstrom (4 w/ DET), Kirk Maltby (4 w/ DET), Darren McCarty (4 w/ DET) and Chris Kunitz (1 w/ ANA, 3 w/ PIT).

6. Adam Fox (5-18—23 in 23 GP) is one of four players in franchise history to average at least 1.00 points-per-game at this stage of their Stanley Cup Playoffs career (23 GP), following Brian Leetch (8-16—24), Mark Pavelich (7-17—24) and Rod Gilbert (14-9—23). Fox’s totals include 2-8—10 while facing elimination in 2022 (6 GP) – the most assists and points by an NHL defenseman when facing elimination in one playoff year.

7. Mika Zibanejad had 4-7—11 while facing elimination in 2022 (6 GP), tied for the highest such total in one postseason in NHL history (w/ Anze Kopitar & Justin Williams in 2014). Chris Kreider (5-1—6) scored the most goals while facing elimination by a Rangers player in one playoff year and moved within one of tying Mark Messier (16) for the most career goals while facing elimination in NHL history.

8. Jacob Trouba (Rochester, Mich.) can become the first U.S.-born captain to guide New York to a Stanley Cup and just the third to do so for any club (Derian Hatcher: 1999 DAL and Dustin Brown: 2012 & 2014 LAK).

9. Igor Shesterkin set a franchise playoff record with eight consecutive home wins last year (Game 2 of R1 vs. PIT to Game 2 of CF vs. TBL), which at the time was the longest in a postseason by any NHL goaltender since 2013 (Jonathan Quick: 8-0 w/ LAK). Entering 2023, Shesterkin has allowed two goals against or fewer in each of his past six home appearances in the postseason (dating to Game 3 of R2 vs. CAR).

10. In 2022, Igor Shesterkin (669) fell 14 saves shy of the highest total on record in one playoff year for a Rangers goaltender. Shesterkin, whose lone postseason appearance before last year came during the 2020 Stanley Cup Qualifiers, enters 2023 with the highest career save percentage by a Rangers netminder (.928 SV% in 21 GP) and one appearance from sole possession of seventh place in club history among goaltenders.
