What's Happening at NEAM this Month!

Open Cockpit Sunday

February 21 - Your chance to play pilot for the day. Climb into the cockpits of 10 aircraft including the Corsair, the F-100 Super Sabre, the Huey helicopter and more. There will be additional craft activities for children and a food vendor will be on site all day.As a special added feature, visitors will have the opportunity to go "behind the ropes" to take a close up look at the interior and exterior of the Museum's newly restored Lockheed 10 "Electra" from the 1930's. This is the same type of aircraft that Amelia Earhart was lost in during her attempted round the world flight. The Air Museum's Lockheed 10 was built at Lockheed's assembly plant in Burbank, California and is a sister ship to Earhart's, being just two serial numbers apart. Cockpits will close at 4:00 pm.

February School Vacation Activities

Monday, February 21 - There will be a LEGO Challenge, a contest for visitors ages 3-12 from 10:00 am-4:00 pm which requires no more than an hour of time. Prizes will be awarded for each of four age categories and participants do not need to be present to win.Tuesday, February 22 - All children will have an opportunity to build and launch straw rockets. Also, there will be big screen simulator demonstrations. Wednesday, February 23 - Children will get to build and fly "foam flyer" airplanes. Thursday, February 24 - We will have a mini Open Cockpit Day with approximately 8 aircraft open for visitor entry. This is your chance to play pilot! The Museum will be open from 10:00 am-5:00 pm and the cockpits will close at 4:00 pm. Friday, February 25 - There will be a "Build & Explore Parachutes" program. Children will build and deploy parachutes and they will also have the opportunity to handle a parachute from WWII.

Save The Date for the Annual Space Expo

The Museum's Annual SPACE EXPO will be held on Sunday, March 27.The theme of the event is "Celebrate the Year of the Solar System". More than 15 exhibitors from across New England will participate in the event including Hamilton Sundstrand Division of United Technologies, the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Aldrich Astronomical Society, McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center, the CATO Rocketry Club, NASA and the Talcott Mountain Science Center. Most of the activities will be hands-on. Visitors can try on a real space suit, pilot a space craft simulator, touch a meteorite, taste space food, learn about the atmosphere of Mars, build a rocket and more. There will be special guest appearances and presentations throughout the day. An Apollo 13 exhibit and presentation will show how the crew was rescued thanks in great part to many of the engineers at Hamilton Sundstrand who had desi gned and built the life support system for the mission. The Space Expo will run from 10 AM to 4:30 PM. For the convenience of visitors, a food vendor will be on site all day. http://www.neam.org/
