Courtney resides in New York City with her husband George, two sons George and Oliver, and her dog, Maggie. Peachy Deegan chatted with Courtney recently about her extraordinary career and how she was Head of Minks...

Peachy Deegan: How did you get involved in public relations initially?
Courtney Moss: When I moved to NY after graduating college and started my job search, I didn’t even know what PR was, but got an interview at Simon and Schuster for a PR job. Since Simon and Schuster is so well known and reputable, I went. It sounded fun so I took the job—one catch though-it was for the reference book division and I was focusing on promoting dictionaries and computer books—not glam at all-but a good start. I parlayed that experience into my first luxury goods pr job—Associate in the PR department at Yves Saint Laurent!

What strategies are the best to employ in this economic climate?
I say buy quality and classics-it is the quality that lasts. While its fun to shop at H&M, etc. It is better to spend $500 on a fabulous piece that you can pair with less expensive items than spend $500 on 5 items that are trendy and not well made. Also if you are going to buy things inexpensively, a rule should be, buy those items in darker or neutral colors—they will look better

If you were stranded on an island and were allowed access to only 3 designers or brands that flew you whatever you wanted, who would they be and why?
A YSL safari mini dress because I have always loved/wanted one and just think it could take me from day to evening perfectly! Chantelle lingerie-it could double as a swimsuit and just love the fit, feel and look of everything they do. It is all chic-not tarty. Sheisedo Absolut Perfect face and eye cream-I cannot live without this and nothing would look good on the body if the face is all wrinkly!

What is your favorite aspect of fashion/beauty to cover and why?
I love the challenge of getting the brands covered in media. With the closing of so many magazines, space has become limited and extremely competitive for coverage. You have to create compelling reasons why your brand should be included over others and I love that. I also love the strategy that goes into promoting a brands and the creative ways we think of to garner media without sacrificing brand DNA. I love it when I open a magazine, read a blog, turn on the TV and see something I did. It is very rewarding.

What do you think is most underrated and overrated here?
The real sense of family and community that NYC provides. Overrated-I don’t know this is NYC-we live off overrated!!
