#Politics @Interior #AustraliaPeachy #WashingtonDCPeachy The United States and Australia Formalize Partnership on Critical Minerals

Today, the United States and Australia formalized their partnership on developing both nations’ critical mineral assets between Geoscience Australia CEO James Johnson and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Director Jim Reilly. The two partners outlined specific steps to strengthen an existing Memorandum of Understanding by collaborating on research and increasing critical mineral capacity for both countries.

“We are working with our close international partners and allies to carry out President Trump’s blueprint to position the United States as a leader in the critical minerals sector and ensure economic prosperity,” said Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt. “This is an important milestone in reducing the Nation’s susceptibility to critical mineral supply disruptions.”

Critical minerals are used in nearly all economic sectors for a range of products, including mobile phones, electronics, batteries, fiber optics, steelmaking, military gear and medical equipment.

The new activities focus on joint critical mineral potential mapping and quantitative mineral assessments; determining geological controls on critical mineral distribution; and developing data analytics capability to understand supply and demand scenarios for developing critical minerals trade between the two countries.

"Today's commitment is an important next step in accomplishing the goals of the Trump Administration's strategy to secure the supply of minerals critical to our national security and economic growth," said Reilly. "We are grateful for the strong partnership we continue to enjoy with our Australian counterparts."

“This is a partnership that will deliver opportunity and security to both nations,” said Minister for Resources and Northern Australia Matt Canavan. “Australia is in a position to develop stable supply chains to meet the growing global demand for critical minerals, especially in key economies such as the U.S. The U.S. has a need for critical minerals and Australia’s abundant supplies makes us a reliable international partner in securing access to a wide range of those including rare earth elements.”

These research priorities and international cooperation are both significant aspects of the Federal Strategy to Ensure a Reliable Supply of Critical Minerals, which the Trump Administration published in June of 2019. Among other things, the strategy directs the DOI to locate domestic supplies of those minerals, ensure access to information necessary for the study and production of minerals, and expedite permitting for minerals projects.

The strategy also directs the USGS to explore international partnerships with close allies and partners to learn more about how those countries study their critical minerals and what lessons the United States could take from them. The USGS has begun doing so with Australia, and a wide-ranging Memorandum of Understanding that was updated in 2018 has already been of great benefit.

For example, the USGS’s effort to collect new geophysical, geological and topographical data is modeled on, among other things, Australian investments in similar geoscience datasets.

Under Executive Order 13817 signed by President Trump, “critical minerals” are non-fuel mineral or mineral materials that are essential to the economic and national security of the United States, that have a supply chain vulnerable to disruption, and that serve an essential function in the manufacturing of a product, the absence of which would have significant consequences for the economy or national security.

In May of 2018, DOI released a list of 35 minerals deemed critical to the U.S. economy and security, based on a methodology by the USGS. This list forms the foundation of the full Federal strategy.

More information on USGS research to address the Federal strategy on critical minerals can be found here. More information on Geoscience Australia and their work with critical minerals can be found here

Being honored by The Academy, especially given the fact that they're the ones that have given me the chance to be part of their work in this area, is humbling. It's an incredible honor."

Uniting the worlds of music and politics, GRAMMYs on the Hill also recognizes legislators who have improved the environment for music by advocating for music creators' rights. Previously honored legislators include former Vice President Joe Biden, Sens. This will be the first exhibition in the UK to focus solely on Australian Impressionists, presenting 41 paintings including important masterpieces never previously shown in the UK. For the first time at the National Gallery, visitors will have the opportunity to discover the impact of European Impressionism on Australian painting of the 1880s and 1890s, and explore how the art that emerged both referenced the work of the European masters and yet was distinct from it.

The exhibition focuses on four major Australian Impressionists: Tom Roberts (1856–1931), Arthur Streeton (1867–1943), Charles Conder (1868–1909), and John Russell (1858–1930) and will show how their work epitomised a growing sense of national identity as Australia approached Federation in 1901. The works will travel to London from some of Australia’s leading public galleries, as well as private collections from Australia and the UK.

All of the artists featured in the exhibition either studied or worked in Europe at different stages of their careers. Inspired by their counterparts active in Europe, such as Whistler and Monet, the Australian Impressionists painted
en plein air; their works displaying a preoccupation with the effects of light and colour, using bold and experimental techniques to depict scenes of daily life.

Australia’s Impressionists is organised in three sections, each exploring the artists’ working relationships and respective styles, as well as their proximity to, or distance from, the European tradition.

Urban Australia and the 9 by 5 Impression Exhibition
The first section features the landmark 9 by 5 Impression Exhibition held in 1889 in Melbourne. Organised by the three major figures of the so-called ‘Heidelberg School’ (later known as the Australian Impressionists) – Tom Roberts, Charles

Conder, and Arthur Streeton – it is regarded as one of the most significant art exhibitions ever to have been mounted in Australia. The 9 by 5 Impression Exhibition introduced Melbourne society to a distinctly Australian version of Impressionism with some one hundred and eighty ‘impressions’ or oil sketches, many of which were painted on panels of 9 x 5 inches made out of cigar box lids. This section of the exhibition also features a number of iconic paintings of the rapidly changing cityscapes of Melbourne and Sydney, introducing late-19th century Australian society as one that was highly urbanised.

National Landscape
Australian Impressionism hit its stride around 1888 at the time of the centenary of the European settlement of the Australian continent. With a growing sense of national identity came a desire to authentically represent the great Australian landscape and in particular, the light. The practice of painting en plein air, which Roberts had embraced while travelling in Europe in the early 1880s, provided the basis for this new school of painting. Scenes of daily life at Sydney Harbour are recorded with a vibrant sense of excitement and pride, while scenes of the bush are elevated to a mode of heroic myth. A highlight painting in this section is Streeton’s Fire’s On (Art Gallery of New South Wales) from 1891, which shows the construction of the Lapstone Tunnel through the Blue Mountains near Sydney, and vividly depicts the moment when a young navvy was killed by a blast just a few yards away from Streeton. Resilience in the face of the sometimes harsh and unforgiving Australian environment became a recurrent theme.

John Russell
John Russell was born and died in Sydney, but spent 40 years as an expatriate in Europe, closely connected to the avant-garde. Russell first enrolled at the Slade School of Fine Art in London in 1881 under French artist and professor Alphonse Legros before continuing his studies in Paris alongside Toulouse-Lautrec and Van Gogh. He travelled to Spain with Roberts in 1883, painting en plein air, but unlike Roberts, Russell settled in Europe on the island of Belle-Île-en-Mer, off the coast of Brittany, where he observed Monet painting and where he also met and mentored the young Matisse. He returned to the Antipodes in the early 1920s, eventually settling in Sydney in 1924. This section explores the work of a painter who, despite his connections to some of the most important artists of his time, rarely exhibited and was only rediscovered as ‘Australia’s lost Impressionist’ in the second half of the 20th century.

The inspiration for Australia’s Impressionists came as the result of the National Gallery receiving the long-term loan of Blue Pacific (1890, Private collection) by Arthur Streeton in 2015. This was the first painting by an Australian artist to be displayed at the National Gallery and the exhibition will further introduce visitors to the artistic movement to which it belongs.

Christopher Riopelle, National Gallery Curator of Post-1800 Paintings said, “Australia’s Impressionist painters were doing more than just recording familiar visual phenomena. They were actually inventing a way for Australians to see this vast and various land, its suddenly teeming cities, and the abrupt new intersections of nature and the man-made. That is what makes the subject so exciting, especially for British and other European viewers; they witness Australians using oil painting to come to visual terms with a continent so endlessly different from their own.”

National Gallery Director, Gabriele Finaldi said, ”Australian painters at the end of the 19th century were deeply interested in how the language of contemporary European Impressionism could be adapted to the Australian landscape and Australian subject matter. The process produced some striking and original results. This will be the first time an exhibition devoted to Australian painting can be seen in the National Gallery.”

Exhibition supported by:
Mr Kerry Stokes AC & Mrs Christine Simpson Stokes, The Kerry Stokes Collection, Perth Western Australia

and members of the Australia's Impressionists Exhibition Supporters Circle.

The Sunley Room exhibition programme is supported by the Bernard Sunley Charitable Foundation.

This exhibition is organised by the National Gallery, in collaboration with Art Gallery of New South Wales.

The sailing world changed on September 26, 1983. That was the day Australia II rumbled past Liberty to become the first challenger in history to win the America’s Cup.

With the win, the Australian team ended what is often called the longest winning streak in sport, at 132-years. Of equal importance the glory of winning the America’s Cup captivated fans all around the world.

“You captured the imagination of the people the world over,” said President Ronald Reagan, as he congratulated the foreign upstarts on a visit to the White House two days after the race. “You have shown us the stuff of which Australians are made.”

That ‘stuff’ included ingenuity, perseverance, and a determination to win that would not be denied.

It took Australia over 20 years to win the America’s Cup with the first challenge coming in 1962. Subsequent efforts in 1964 and 1967 were equally unsuccessful.

In 1970, the defending club allowed multiple challenges for the first time in over 100 years. Many observers point to this as the beginning of the end of the successful winning streak for the Americans as for the first time, the challengers would enter the match battle-hardened, through internal competition to select the ultimate challenger.

Still, the USA held on to the trophy through 1970, 1974, 1977 and 1980, routing the challengers 16-2 over that period.

But 1983 felt different from the beginning. This was the best prepared challenger in history. Skipper John Bertrand was an engineer, an Olympic medalist and an intense competitor.

And the design of Australia II, from the pen of the brilliant Ben Lexcen, featured a secret weapon – a winged keel – that the team kept hidden from view with tarpaulin ‘modesty skirts’ that were draped over the side of the boat each day before it was lifted in or out of the water.

Australia II made fast work of the challenger trials and a showdown was set with Liberty, skippered by Dennis Conner, who was just beginning to earn his nickname ‘Mr. America’s Cup’.

Dramatically, the best of seven series opened with two wins to the American boat, after the Australians suffered equipment failure. Australia won the next race, but lost race four and suddenly, unexpectedly, Conner was on match point, up 3-1, needing just one win to retain the Cup against what was largely considered to be a faster boat.

“It’s going to be very exciting to be involved in what’s going to be the race of the century,” Conner would say on the eve of the final race. “At this point, we’re hoping we can find a way to prevail like we have over the last 132-years. We have a lot of tradition going for us, and we have a very courageous crew and somehow I think we’ll pull it out.”

For the Australians, just winning three races in the final series was an achievement no other challenger could claim. But it wasn’t enough. Only winning the Cup would sate the hunger. Back home in Australia, the nation had become transfixed by the match. A nation was united behind the team, despite the races taking place in the middle night. “We were a nation of zombies by the end,” said one television commentator.
The final race was a bit like the series. Despite showing flashes of speed, the Australian boat found itself behind in the later stages of the race.

“With Liberty in front, we just had to bide our time,” Bertrand recalled. “She was sailing very fast in the light conditions. We just had to wait for her to make a mistake.”

On the final downwind leg, Bertrand and his crew would get his opportunity. He found a puff of wind that eluded the Americans and made an historic pass. Conner and his team fought valiantly on the final leg to the finish, but couldn’t recover, all glory to Australia.

The celebrations were epic. Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke famously declared: “Any boss who sacks a worker for not turning up today is a bum."

Years later, reflecting on the win he said, “The nation celebrated because this was truly historic. Little Australia had gone up and done what people had thought was impossible.”

Dennis Conner would redouble he efforts and win the Cup back in 1987. However painful at the time, he said losing the Cup in ’83 was perhaps the best thing that ever happened.

“Me losing after 132 years was the best thing that ever happened to the America’s Cup and the best thing that ever happened to Dennis Conner,” he would say. “Before the win by the Australians, the America’s Cup was only big in the minds of the yachties, but the rest of the world didn't know or care about it at all. But when we lost it… suddenly everyone appreciated it. If I hadn't lost it, there never would have been the national effort... without that there never would have been the ticker-tape parade up Fifth Avenue in New York, lunch with the President at the White House and all the doors that it opened.”

Conner would continue to race for America’s Cup glory through 2003, claiming wins in 1987 and 1988, to go along with his 1980 victory.

Bertrand’s last America’s Cup appearance was in 1995 but his win with Australia II was the time he captured the hearts of a nation and won America’s Cup glory.

Lachlan McPherson, this one's for you!
We can't wait to work with you too someday and by the time you can read this we think we'll see you here.

We have yet to visit Australia, but feel like we must be there every time we visit Flinders Lane, a bastion of excellence all the way east in Manhattan on Avenue A, definitely the best venue in its neighborhood and more than worth the trip from any other neighborhood.  Our first visit in early 2015 was highly promising and the fantastic news is that Flinders Lane is no one-hit wonder.  They are in it to win it and they are going to be winning even bigger once they open in the great State of Connecticut.
Every hedge fund in Fairfield County is going to be clamoring to get their attention at lunchtime for catering.
We bet there has never been an Australian restaurant in Connecticut before this and we hope we are the first to tell you about it.  Sometimes the Best of Connecticut comes to Manhattan but in this case it is vice versa!  (But technically speaking you know Chris and Chris are the Best of Melbourne, Australia.)
and they also were featured in early 2016:
This time we were delighted to work with Owner Chris McPherson and Owner Chris Rendell, who is the Executive Chef-we look forward to seeing you again next time.

If you know Peachy well, you know she often carries a Lilly Pulitzer bag with pink elephants on it and it is pink and green of course.  Lilly, like Peachy, was a Miss Porter's Graduate (Farmington, Connecticut; i.e. an Ancient) and since Lilly was a "9" and Peachy is a "4" they used to see each other at reunions (Lilly has since passed - say a prayer for her please.)  Flinders Lane this season has had the brilliance to bring the pink and green of Lilly Pulitzer to your plate with the Montauk Fluke Sashimi, which is purely gorgeous.  This must be a subconscious Connecticut thought...and w
hen Virgin Atlantic says "Hello Gorgeous" we think they must be talking to this plate.
The Montauk Fluke is finely sliced and superbly refreshing.
The serrano chili (green) is finely sliced as well as its companion radish (pink), and we even trust Flinders Lane with the Salad Dressing and we like the Lemon Dressing which boasts an amazing kick.  What a brilliant appetizer!
Also note that the ambiance of Flinders Lane is upbeat and festive without being overbearing and the music selection we heard from The Supremes to A-ha's Take on Me and We Built this City on Rock n Roll confirms that it is not only your appetite that will be rocked; your ears experience a virtual jukebox to be adored.
So, movie and television producers, we're talking to you with scenery selection: pick this for a great scene (and maybe put the Chris team in it to secure a good review!).  PBS-why would you have Indian Summer when you can have AUSTRALIAN SUMMER!  That should be next.

We have been lucky to experience some truly phenomenal salads this summer, but this one is the best: meet the Grilled Peach and Ricotta Salad which endeavors to party in pistachios, baby greens and drumroll please, BLACK TRUFFLES!  The genius combination has flavor and texture that has been unparalleled in our experience and from the succulent grilled peaches to the creamy ricotta to the nutritious greens to the ultimate triumph: black truffles! - every aspect on this team is cast from an All-Star lineup.
This is the salad to beat in Manhattan right now.
For your tastebuds, the experience of eating this salad and enjoying the taste it exudes is like swinging from the most gorgeous chandelier in Manhattan and not getting in trouble for it.

Obviously peaches speak to us and they said basking in the brilliance of black truffles makes them the happiest!

We applaud Flinders Lane for their healthy menu: they also have a wonderful Heirloom Tomato Salad with Olives, Pickled Red onion and Basil Oil.  Green, yellow and red tomatoes sing a song of summer that also have a lovely color contrast that's stunning.  They are fresh and spectacular and this is a prime example of why less is more.  This is the Chanel LBD (little black dress) of salads at Flinders Lane.

We love that Flinders Lane is so detail-oriented that they have glasses with their name etched on them with precision and we must say Chris McPherson has exquisite taste in wines and though we are not big believers in pairings because everyone has a different palate to start with, we agree with every combination he's come up with.
Now we would like to hear from the vineyard owners of these fine Australian wines!

Every steakhouse in Manhattan should cower in a corner when they compare their steaks to the truly phenomenal Grilled Hanger Steak of Flinders Lane which is pure, juicy perfection.  It arrived at a perfect medium rare and is hand cut with precision (close to its liver) and you will revel in all of its Black Angus glory which exhibits a laudable iodine, earthy character.  It's also grass fed and Flinders Lane sources its steak from both Baldor and DeBragga, both of which we hold in high esteem.  It has sidekicks of succulent sauteed mushrooms, shallot jus and fat chips which is the Australian way of saying steak fries.
Carnivores, rejoice!

Just when you thought "How could this review get even better?" amazing creamy Tiramisu arrived in style with PEACHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We can't remember the last time we used an exclamation point so liberally but the fourth time's a charm and we cannot WAIT to brag about these guys in Connecticut.
We have every confidence they are going to blow everyone away.

Yes of course Flinders Lane is Terrific Takeout and it continues to be Highly Recommended!
Stamford, Connecticut you'd better get excited because the Australians are going to take the Nutmeg State!
184 Summer Street, Stamford, Connecticut!
BE THERE!
We'll let you know when it opens....
