#CulturedPeachy Artemisia Gentileschi’s Self Portrait goes on display for International Women’s Day @womenslibrary @NationalGallery #ScotlandPeachy #NationalGalleryLondon #WhomYouKnow Artemisia Visits… Glasgow Women’s Library

Artemisia Gentileschi’s Self Portrait goes on display for International Women’s Day
A recently discovered, rare self portrait by the most celebrated female artist of the Italian Baroque – Artemisia Gentileschi – has gone on display today (6 March 2019) in Glasgow Women’s Library, just in time for International Women’s Day (8 March 2019).

Self Portrait as Saint Catherine of Alexandria, an oil painting from about 1615–17, was acquired by the National Gallery, London in July 2018.

Through spring and summer 2019, the painting is undertaking a series of ‘visits’ to unusual and unexpected venues (not all of them galleries or museums) across the UK. In addition to Glasgow Women’s Library, these will include a girls’ school and a health centre.

Director of the National Gallery, Dr Gabriele Finaldi says, “The National Gallery acquired Artemisia Gentileschi’s Self Portrait last year and it now belongs to everyone. The tour ‘Artemisia Visits…’ takes this superb picture to a series of remarkable and unexpected venues across the country so that it can be enjoyed by people who may not be able to get to see it in Trafalgar Square.”

Artemisia Gentileschi’s self portrait will stay in Glasgow until 19 March.

Sue John, Glasgow Women’s Library’s Enterprise Development Manager said, “The importance of Artemisia Gentileschi is irrefutable and this addition to our national collection is incredibly exciting. We are thrilled that her ‘grand tour’ will start with Glasgow Women’s Library, the only accredited museum dedicated to women’s history in the UK. As well as being able to see this stunning work, we look forward to welcoming people to participate in our public events programmes during this period.”

Letizia Treves, the National Gallery James and Sarah Sassoon Curator of Later Italian, Spanish, and French 17th-century Paintings, says, “I’m thrilled to have played a part in the acquisition of Artemisia Gentileschi’s self portrait and now, following its transformation after conservation and a short display period in London, I am delighted that this remarkable painting will be seen by people who would not normally have the opportunity to visit the National Gallery.”

Artemisia Gentileschi is considered one of the most accomplished painters among the followers of Caravaggio, whom she must have known personally through her father, Orazio. In an era when female artists were not easily accepted, she was the first woman to become a member of the Accademia del Disegno in Florence and had a truly international clientele, including royalty.

Artemisia faced challenges in both her professional and personal life: she was raped by a fellow painter and was subjected to gruelling questioning and physical torture during the trial that ensued. Her biography has long overshadowed her artistic achievements, but today she is recognised as one of the most talented painters of her generation.

Self Portrait as Saint Catherine of Alexandria shows a female figure turning towards the viewer. A halo is visible just above her head, indicating that she is a saint. Her left hand rests on the top of a broken spiked wheel; a symbol associated with Saint Catherine of Alexandria, a Christian saint martyred in the early 4th century AD. Sentenced to death by the Emperor Maxentius, Catherine was bound to revolving wheels studded with iron spikes and nails. She escaped this instrument of torture through heavenly intervention, but was later beheaded. Of the sixty or so paintings attributed to Artemisia, many feature a strong female hero as their main protagonist. Artemisia’s paintings have often been read as autobiographical and there can be little doubt that her personal identity is closely intertwined with her artistic production.
The £3.6 million acquisition of Self Portrait as Saint Catherine of Alexandria was made possible thanks to the support of the American Friends of the National Gallery, the National Gallery Trust, Art Fund (through the legacy of Sir Denis Mahon), Lord and Lady Sassoon, Lady Getty, and Hannah Rothschild CBE, and other donors including those who wish to remain anonymous. The conservation of the painting has been made possible with Art Fund support. It was unveiled at the National Gallery in December 2018.

Smoky Mountain Scottish Festival and Games to Kickoff 36th Year of Festivities in East Tennessee

The 36th annual Smoky Mountain Scottish Festival and Games will offer a wee glimpse of Scotland, and a dose of haggis and bagpipes, for the thirty-sixth year in a row at Maryville College May 20-21.

The Festival and Games will begin at the Clayton Center in Maryville on Friday night, May 19, with a gala celebrating the event and its patrons.

For $25 per weekend pass, guests and over 200 volunteers will take a trip back in time to experience Celtic music and dancing, genealogical research, sheep dog demonstrations, a dog parade, hard-to-find Celtic food and merchandise, and much more.

There are several ticket packages available at early bird discount prices, including the full weekend package. Early bird discounts end on May 18. Children under 16 years old are admitted free, and there is no charge for parking.

The Smoky Mountain Scottish Festival and Games are East Tennessee’s oldest and premier celebration of Scottish culture and heritage, originally founded in 1981. Maryville is home of the Scots, inhabited by early Scots-Irish settlers—people of extraordinary courage, determination and a pioneering spirit. The Games are a nod to the rich traditions and history of these settlers and take place on the picturesque grounds of Maryville College.

The event offers a take on classic challenges like open stone put, hammer throw, caber toss, sheaf toss and more. All competitions have a men’s and women’s division. Over 100 athletes are set to participate in these competitions.

Two concert stages featuring Celtic music will entertain guests for the duration of the event, and up to 10 pipe and drum bands will perform.

This year, over 30 clans will be present and over 30 food vendors, mostly with a Scots-Irish theme, as well as an expanded beer tent.

On Saturday, May 21, the Festival will host Scotch tastings at Profit Dining Hall on Saturday, May 20 at 1:30 and 5:30. All tastings require a separate ticket purchase.

A 5K and half marathon, which have become increasingly popular events, now boast over 500 runners and will take place Sunday, May 21.

Whether Scottish or not, Scottish Festival and Games Board Member Keith Austin guarantees guests will be entertained.

“We’re thrilled to have over seven thousand individuals attend the Smoky Mountain Scottish Festival and Games each year,” said Austin. “This highly-anticipated event is quite a sight to see. We’re excited to share new additions to the festival and celebrate a unique culture and the heritage of our area.”

While entertaining, Smoky Mountain Tourism Development Authority Director of Tourism Kim Mitchell finds events like the Scottish Festival and Games create a significant economic impact for East Tennessee.

“The Scottish Festival and Games draws visitors to the Maryville area and raises valuable awareness for Blount County,” said Mitchell. “Having events that provide a wealth of entertainment are important to our community and to our tourism efforts.”

Revenue raised at the event funds two $250 dance scholarships each year. Additionally, 10 percent of the event’s revenue goes to Maryville College scholarships. The Festival and Games has funded more than $11,000 in Maryville College scholarships since its founding.

“Maryville College is pleased to host the Smoky Mountain Scottish Festival and Games on our campus,” said Maryville College President Tom Bogart. “The Festival and Games tap into an important part of our heritage with history, food, music, dance and entertainment. We’re appreciative of the scholarship program that has benefited many of our Maryville College students.”

For more information about the festivities and ticket sales, visit smokymountaingames.org or contact Keith Austin at kaustin@lamar.com. The SMSFG is an IRS 501(C)(3) charitable organization.

Promising Soggy Bottoms and Perfect Patisseries

PBS announced at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour that THE GREAT BRITISH BAKING SHOW will return for a fourth season on June 16, 2017, airing Friday nights at 9:00 p.m. ET (check local listings). This upcoming season is the BBC’s most recent season, which received the highest-ever viewership for the series. PBS also announced it has committed to a fifth season of the series that has previously aired on the BBC.

THE GREAT BRITISH BAKING SHOW follows amateur bakers from diverse backgrounds who tackle culinary trials that increase in difficulty as the competition unfolds. In each episode, challenges come in three categories: a Signature Bake, to test the contestants’ creative flair and baking ability; a Technical Bake, in which challengers receive basic recipes with ingredient lists and minimal instruction; and the Showstopper Bake, designed to display depth of skill and talent.

As in past seasons, bakers will be judged by Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, two icons of British baking. With nearly 60 years of cooking experience, Berry established herself as a leading food writer and broadcaster. Over her career, she has published 70 cookbooks that have sold millions of copies around the world. She was also appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) during the Queen’s 2012 Birthday Honors. Hollywood has worked in some of the world’s most exclusive hotels, including London’s Dorchester. He published the best-selling 100 Great Breads, which to date has been translated into seven languages. Comedy duo Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc are also back as the series hosts who keep the contestants and judges grounded, providing the right balance of humor, support and naughtiness.

“THE GREAT BRITISH BAKING SHOW has emerged as one of PBS’ most popular programs, with the third season, debuting last July, ranking as the most-streamed program on PBS this past summer,” said Beth Hoppe, PBS Chief Programming Executive and General Manager, General Audience Programming. “We’re thrilled to continue airing this warm and charming competition for at least two more seasons, and continuing to build its popularity on these shores.”

Amazon Web Services Now Available to Customers from Data Centers in the UK

Cloud pioneer expands global infrastructure footprint with the new AWS Europe (London) Region, enabling customers to run applications and store data in the UK at low latency

With over one hundred thousand active customers in the UK using AWS, those welcoming the new AWS Region include Aviva, BP, Cancer Research UK, Channel 4, Civitas Learning, Currencycloud, Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), Echo.co.uk, Financial Times, Funding Circle, Genomics England, ITV, Just Eat, Missguided, Monzo, National Trust, News UK, OakNorth, Sage,Starling Bank, Trainline, Transport for London (TfL), Travis Perkins, UK Ministry of Justice(MOJ), and many more

Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), an Amazon.com company (NASDAQ:AMZN), announced the launch of the AWS Europe (London) Region. With this launch, AWS now provides 42 Availability Zones across 16 technology infrastructure regions globally with another five Availability Zones and two regions in France and China expected to come online in the coming months. The AWS Europe (London) Region is AWS's third European Region, joining existing regions in Ireland and Germany. Over one hundred thousand UK-based customers already use existing AWS Regions and starting today, developers, startups, and enterprises, as well as government, education, and non-profit organizations, can leverage the AWS Cloud to run their applications and store their data on infrastructure in the UK. Developers can sign-up and get started today at: https://aws.amazon.com.

The AWS Europe (London) Region offers two Availability Zones at launch. AWS Regions are comprised of Availability Zones, which refer to technology infrastructure in separate and distinct geographic locations with enough distance to significantly reduce the risk of a single event impacting availability, yet near enough for business continuity applications that require rapid failover. Each Availability Zone has independent power, cooling, physical security, and is connected via redundant, ultra-low-latency networks. AWS customers focused on high availability can architect their applications to run in multiple Availability Zones to achieve even higher fault-tolerance. AWS also provides multiple Amazon CloudFront edge locations in the UK for customers looking to deliver websites, applications, and content to UK end users with low latency. These locations are part of AWS's existing network of 68 edge sites across North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

"Our customers and APN Partners asked us to build an AWS Region in the UK, so they can run their mission-critical workloads and store sensitive data on AWS infrastructure locally," said Andy Jassy, CEO, AWS. "For the past decade, we've had an enthusiastic base of customers in the UK choosing to build their businesses on the AWS Cloud because it has more functionality than other cloud platforms, an extensive APN Partner and customer ecosystem, as well as unmatched maturity, security, and performance. A local AWS Region will serve as the foundation for even more innovative cloud initiatives from the UK that can transform business, customer experiences, and enhance the local economy."

Karen Bradley, UK Secretary of State of Culture Media and Sport, said, "I'm delighted to welcome the opening of the UK Amazon Web Services Region, which is a strong endorsement of our approach to the digital economy. The new AWS Region shows a clear confidence in the UK being open for business and one of the best places in the world for technology companies to invest in and grow."

"We're one of the first governments to implement a cloud-first policy and our reforms have saved more than £3.5 billion. We now have a competitive market to deliver cloud services onshore with the scale of AWS, meaning that companies and organizations can benefit from scalable, pay-as-you-go enterprise compute services. In the public sector, the effect on user experience, project delivery timescales, and costs will be marked. We're delighted that AWS is now live in the UK, and look forward to it being a strong part of the ongoing transformation of our digital economy and digital government," said Liam Maxwell, the UKGovernment's National Technology Advisor.

All AWS infrastructure regions around the world are designed, built, and regularly audited to meet the most rigorous compliance standards and provide high levels of security for all AWS customers. These include ISO 27001, ISO 27017, ISO 27018, SOC 1 (Formerly SAS 70), SOC 2 and SOC 3 Security & Availability, PCI DSS Level 1, and many more. This means customers benefit from all the best practices of AWS policies, architecture, and operational processes built to satisfy the needs of even the most security sensitive customers. In addition, AWS is certified under the EU-US Privacy Shield, and the AWS Data Processing Addendum (DPA) has been approved by the Article 29 Working Party, which means that customers can transfer personal data to countries outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and comply with EU data protection laws.

The AWS Europe (London) Region has also achieved the UK's Cyber Essentials Plus certification, which means that AWS has properly implemented the necessary security controls to protect against cyber risks. AWS also provides customers with guidance on how to build applications that align with the National Cyber Security Centre's UK Cloud Security Principles and the National Health Service (NHS) Information Governance Statement of Compliance (IGSoC) process. Details on how AWS helps customers meet compliance requirements can be found here: https://aws.amazon.com/compliance/.

Customers and APN Partners Welcome the AWS infrastructure Region in the UK

For more than a decade, AWS has changed the way organizations acquire technology infrastructure. AWS customers are not required to make any up-front financial or long-term commitments, paying on demand for the IT resources they use rather than incurring large capital expenses. This enables them to scale quickly by adding or shedding resources at any time, accelerate their time to market with innovative applications, and free up limited engineering resources from the undifferentiated heavy lifting of running backend infrastructure--often while significantly improving operational performance, reliability, and security in the process. This has led to millions of active customers using the AWS Cloud each month in over 190 countries around the world.

Trainline is among Europe's leading independent rail ticket retailers, with more than 100,000 people traveling using tickets bought from Trainline each day. "We recently completed the migration of 100 percent of our ecommerce infrastructure to AWS and have seen awesome results, including improved security, 60 percent less downtime, significant cost savings, and incredible improvements in agility," said Mark Holt, CTO at Trainline. "From extensive testing, we know that 0.3s of latency is worth more than £8 million and so, while AWS connectivity is already blazingly fast, we expect that serving our UK customers from UK data centers should lead to significant top-line benefits."

Travis Perkins, the largest supplier of building materials in the UK, is implementing the biggest systems and business change in its history, including the migration of its data centers to AWS. "We are committed to the cloud and are investing in going all-in on AWS," said Neil Pearce, Group CIO at Travis Perkins. "The opening of the new AWS Region in the UK, and the scalability and security that it provides, will make it even easier for us to free ourselves of our legacy systems and business processes. With AWS, we will be able to more quickly innovate and transform our business to provide unique experiences and services for our customers."

BP is one of the world's leading integrated oil and gas companies. Headquartered in London, BP uses AWS to host enterprise applications and its website, bp.com. "We have been working with AWS since 2013 and are delighted that the new AWS Europe (London) Region has now opened, which will support us as a global business," said Simon Hodgkinson, VP, Infrastructure & Integration Services. "Developing our cloud platform is part of our strategy to drive value for BP through digital technology. We are working with AWS, and others, to develop a reliable and secure cloud platform that will underpin our digital offer and enable us to respond quickly to the rapidly changing environment in which we operate. AWS helps give us the flexibility we need so we can, within minutes, respond to demands from across BP for large scale computing and storage capabilities. As big data analytics and the Internet of Things start to transform the way we operate, it will be important for us to have access to the scale of resources and technology services offered by the cloud."

Similar to large, security-conscious enterprise organisations, the public sector is also entrusting AWS to deliver the highest levels of security and privacy. Central government organisations, such as the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), are using AWS to transform the services they deliver to the citizens of the UK. The DVLA maintains accurate and up-to-date records for over 47 million drivers and over 39 million vehicles. The DVLA also collects around £6 billion a year in Vehicle Excise Duty. "We welcome the launch of the AWS Europe (London) Region," said Dave Perry, CTO, DVLA. "As we transform our organisation, and move to the cloud, we continue to protect the personal data of citizens that use our services with exemplary levels of security. The availability of UK-based cloud options supports this move while removing concerns around data residency."

Additionally, many of the most well-known and fastest growing startups in the UK are using AWS to build and rapidly expand their businesses across the country, throughout Europe, and around the world. Companies such as Currencycloud, Echo.co.uk, Fanduel, Funding Circle, JustEat, Made.com, Missguided, Monzo, Shazam, Skyscanner, Yplan, Zoopla, and many more have embraced AWS as the infrastructure that is powering their businesses.

Echo.co.uk is an application that lets patients manage their NHS medication via their smartphone and have it delivered directly to their door. Echo.co.uk uses natural language processing to convert a doctor's directions into alerts and reminders, helping patients to better manage their medication. Due to the nature of the service, this application deals with highly sensitive patient data and medical records, requiring the highest levels of security. "The Echo.co.uk team has a simple vision - to use technology to make everyone's experience of healthcare and wellness better and more fulfilling," explains Stephen Bourke, co-founder, Echo.co.uk. "The new AWS Region in the UK means we can securely access patient data that is stored locally and, combined with the analytical power of the cloud, deliver a scalable service that benefits patients' health, and the entire UK National Health Service. By choosing AWS it means we can focus on improving the health of citizens of the UK and AWS can focus on delivering us secure and reliable infrastructure."

Startups in the regulated financial services industry are also using AWS to increase agility as they grow their businesses. Since launching in 2010, Funding Circle, a direct lending platform for business loans, has become one of the largest net lenders to small businesses in the UK helping over 24,000 businesses access over $2.9 billion in financing globally. "As a regulated business we need separate infrastructure in multiple geographies and AWS provides the services we need in all territories in which we operate," said David Townsend, Vice President of Engineering at Funding Circle. "We leverage many AWS services including Amazon Route 53, which directs much of our traffic, and AWS's superb data analytics and storage services, which help us to deliver reports overnight, a process that previously took several days. The uniform nature of AWS Regions means the same architecture can be created in one geographic location and then easily deployed in many others. The ability to host our AWS services in the UK will help us to future proof our business against changes in regulations while maintaining the highest levels of security for our regulated workloads."

UK-based AWS Partner Network (APN) Partners also welcomed the arrival of the AWSEurope (London) Region. The APN includes tens of thousands of Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) and Systems Integrators (SIs) around the world with APN participation among UK based entities growing significantly over the past 12 months. APN Partnersbuild innovative solutions and services on AWS and the APN helps by providing those entities with business, technical, marketing, and go-to-market (GTM) support. APN SIs such as Attenda, Accenture, Capgemini, Claranet, CloudReach, Deloitte, Kainos, KCOM, KPMG, and Rackspace help enterprise and public sector customers migrate to AWS, deploy mission-critical applications, and provide a full range of monitoring, automation, and management services for customers' AWS environments. AWS ISVs including Alces Flight, Matillion, MicroStrategy, Sage, Software AG, Splunk, Tibco, and Zerolight, will serve their UK customers from the AWS Europe (London) Region. Customers can also easily find, trial, deploy, and buy software solutions for AWS on the AWS Marketplace.

"By offering our customers best-in-market products delivered through AWS, we are able to provide enterprise level technology and services to businesses of all sizes," said Stephen Kelly, CEO at Sage, an accounting software group headquartered in the UK. "This in turn delivers business builders with tangible benefits to help improve productivity, lower costs, increase cash flow, and reduce IT overhead. The AWS Europe (London) Region will help us reach even more customers and achieve our aim of making it easy for them to find, buy, and immediately start using the technology that they need to be successful and to grow their businesses. Helping to accelerate innovation is a personal mission of mine, as it supports the ambition of our customers and helps them focus on what matters."

Investing in the UK's Cloud Future

As well as supporting organizations with technology services, AWS also supports the upskilling of customers with a number of programs. For example, AWS offers a full range of training and certification programs to help customers interested in the latest cloud computing technologies, best practices, and architectures to advance their technical skills. Additionally, the AWS Educate program promotes cloud learning in the classroom and has been adopted by more than 500 institutions worldwide. The program helps provide an academic gateway for the next generation of IT and cloud professionals. The AWS Activate program provides UK-based startups with the resources they need to quickly get started on AWS and scale their businesses. AWS has teamed with accelerators, incubators, seed and venture capital funds, including SeedCamp, Techstars, Ignite100, and DotForge to provide a range of services, including training, AWS credits, capital, in-person technical support, and other benefits.

Developers and businesses can access the AWS Europe (London) Region beginning today. A full list of services and details on pricing is available at https://aws.amazon.com/products/.

"Tim and Samantha are amazing in this role.  I've worked with the producers before on Silent Witness and they really know how to run a show.  Working with the team again and the opportunity to act with two people I greatly admire was a big draw for me

BBC One announces that Tim Roth and Samantha Morton will lead the cast for Rillington Place, which begins filming in Scotland.

This gripping three-part drama is based on the real-life multiple murders undertaken by John Christie in Notting Hill in the 1940s and Fifties. The subsequent tragic miscarriage of justice, which led to Timothy Evans being hanged for a crime he did not commit, contributed towards the abolition of capital punishment in Britain.

Tim Roth (The Hateful Eight, Cannes Film Festival award-winning Chronic, Pulp Fiction, Lie To Me) plays John Christie, who lived at the infamous address with his wife, Ethel (Samantha Morton, The Unloved, Longford, In America), from where he carried out the multiple murders. Newly-weds Timothy and Beryl Evans, played by Nico Mirallegro (The Village, Common) and Jodie Comer (Doctor Foster, Thirteen), fall prey to Christie’s influence after moving into a neighbouring flat.

Samantha Morton says: "I am very much looking forward to being part of Rillington Place with wonderful director Craig Viveiros in Glasgow, a city I love. And I am of course a huge fan of Tim Roth, so it's a thrill to be working alongside him.”

Writers Ed Whitmore and Tracey Malone say: “This is a story you just can't look away from: an unlikely serial killer who orchestrated a devastating miscarriage of justice. It has drawn us in at every turn and has attracted an incredibly exciting level of talent who are as committed as we are to bringing it to life.”

Phillippa Giles, Executive Producer for Bandit Television, says: "This is an incredible cast. A tribute to the beautiful texture of the scripts and Craig Viveiros's reputation as a director."

The 3x60 drama is made by BBC Drama Production in association with Bandit Television for BBC One. It is directed by Craig Viveiros (And Then There Were None) and written by Ed Whitmore (He Kills Coppers) and Tracey Malone (Born To Kill).

Commissioned by Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC TV Channels and iPlayer, and Polly Hill, Controller BBC Drama Commissioning, the executive producers are Phillippa Giles for Bandit Television, part of Endemol Shine Group, and Hilary Salmon for BBC Drama Production. It is produced by Sharon Bloom (Silent Witness).

Rillington Place will be filmed at BBC Scotland’s Dumbarton Studios, and on location in Glasgow and London.

Triple the Fun with The Articulate Gallery, Recommended by Whom You Know!

It's not surprising to know that the Triple Gallery by The Articulate Gallery is their best seller because in this case, more is more!  Whether it's a three-part series by a single precocious artist or the best work by three different children, the art that this smartly stores will be preserved and celebrated like never before.
Previously on Whom You Know, both the double:
 & the single:
frames were featured.
Honor your young artwork properly!
The Articulate Gallery is Recommended by Whom You Know.

The Articulate Gallery is a multi-award winning range of slot-sided picture frames especially for the display of 2D and 3D children’s artwork. It takes the children’s pictures off the fridge door and places them in their rightful place in a frame on the wall in an instant. The children gain a sense of achievement when they see their artwork properly showcased which helps build confidence. Confident and creative learning are vital parts of a child’s development. These frames make a great gift for any family member. Unlike most other children’s products, the kids don’t grow out of them very quickly. The frames allow easy rotation of the art. Since they are less expensive than conventional framing, they enable and encourage creativity in children. The frames come in 9x12” Single, Double, Triple format. The frames were designed and developed by a husband and wife team who saw that children’s art should be celebrated and displayed like a proper artist’s. As Pablo Picasso said, ‘every child is an artist’ so every family should have an Articulate Gallery.
History of Articulate as told by Colin:
Articulate is a family-owned and run business, based on the south side of Glasgow, Scotland. We designed and produce a range of slot-sided picture frames to allow creative kids to proudly display their artistic endeavours. There is me, Colin (dad), Eona (mum), Todd and Murray (10 and 8 years old respectively) and Digger (our 13 year old Jack Russell). We are noisy, red-headed and funny.

The idea for these really simple picture frames came about as a result of mum Eona’s frustration with ‘fridge door’ art. Simply sticking the mini masterpieces created by her then two year old son onto kitchen appliances seemed inappropriate. Instead, she had the idea for the frame to celebrate children’s creativity in a way that is fun as well as functional.

Eona has a degree in drama and a MA in education so she fully understands the importance of art and promoting creativity in early years and how that helps children’s development. Eona has won a few awards recently as she works in art education. I ran a 150-year-old construction business and diversified into joinery manufacture, designing and manufacturing high quality bespoke hardwood products before taking the opportunity that The Articulate Gallery presented. I also have a university degree in Construction.

With my background in design, I designed the frame, developed the prototype and the product myself and have brought it to market. The product once designed was protected. Like so many other products, we picked and packed the first 2000 units or so on the kitchen table. I then sought less expensive manufacture overseas as I thought the product would do well in retail given the right pricing.

We successfully negotiated the fearsome Dragons in their Den on BBC2 and then I conquered Habitat on “Britain's Next Big Thing” with this little frame that does something so simple yet meaningful in such an effective way. Dragon’s Den was the forerunner to the US’s “Shark Tank”, Britain’s Next Big Thing was another TV show which followed shortly after. The product has been seen on a few TV shows in the UK to date and we hope many more.

I launched the product onto the UK retail market in 2010 and was met with a deal of enthusiasm and success. The product is now sold across Europe and last year I thought the US was next on the list so launched at NYNow trade show in August 2014. I set up a US trading company and opened a distribution centre in NJ. Again the product has met with a deal of success and can be found in stores such as Nordstrom, Amazon and Pottery Barn Kids to name but a few.

The company and The Articulate Gallery have won a number of awards and continues to do so.

Articulate (Scotland) Limited is a member of the Giftware Association, the British Jewellery and Giftware Federation, the British Jewellery and Giftware International, ACID (Anti Copying In Design) and the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce. The product is design registered and protected by a patent.

This is ideal for households or grandparents with two children/grandchildren, particularly when you have twins.  The versatility of The Articulate Gallery is a notable point for decorators everywhere!  Another point to consider is that you may be the owner of a two-part limited edition series, where one picture simply cannot go up without the other:
