MOVERS AND SHAKERS: Designer Sergio Celestino Guadarrama

Sergio Celestino Guadarrama was born in 1982 in Austin, Texas. Although growing up he was encouraged by his family to pursue a career in soccer, like his father and two younger brothers, Sergio was more interested in developing his creative talents. He began designing dresses for his cousins and soon after taught himself to pattern and sew. Upon graduating in Fashion Design from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles, CA, Sergio moved to New York to obtain a second Fashion Design degree from the acclaimed Fashion Institute of Technology. While at F.I.T., Sergio began building a private client base, creating custom designs for women living in Manhattan's Upper East Side. This ultimately led to the creation of his company, Celestino, in August of 2005.

Sergio has been featured in various publications such as Women's Wear Daily (WWD), Forbes, Fashion Week Daily, Vogue Knitting, New York Cool and the New York Post. In January, his elaborate wedding gown, winner of “Best in Class for Execution” at July 2008’s inaugural Supima Cotton Design Competition, was showcased at New York City’s Gotham Hall during the 2nd Supima Cotton Design Competition. Celestino by Sergio Guadarrama collections are shown each season of New York Fashion Week and at Trunk Shows around the United States in conjunction with boutiques, charities and private clients. Peachy Deegan recently chatted with Sergio.

Sergio Celestino Guadarrama: The MET (Metropolitan Museum of Art)

What is your favorite shop?
The Antiques Garage is really fun to walk through on a slow weekend... on West 25th between 6th & 7th Avenues. If you're patient you can find amazing antique jewelry & accessories.

What is your favorite drink?
Honey Green Tea (by Honest Tea); I've yet to find anything better.

What is your favorite restaurant?
Pipa Tapas Bar in Union Square - everything on their menu is amazing.

What is your favorite NYC book?
Does "Breakfast At Tiffany's" count...?
[Of course, this is practically required reading for Whom You Know readers!]

What is your favorite thing to do in NYC that you can do nowhere else?
Shopping for fabrics in the Garment District with dealers who aren't open to the public, tucked away in the old buildings... kind of like a secret club.

What do you think is most underrated and overrated here?
I think night clubs are so overrated in NYC; underrated... possibly the subway.

What else should Whom You Know readers know about you?
I can breakdance... seriously!
