READ THIS: Fancy Nancy by Jane O'Connor and Illustrated by Robin Preiss Glasser

The Petite Peachy Panel of Whom You Know is so pleased to be kicking off our coverage of Fancy Nancy.  Nancy is the little girl with thoughts that are dreams and an overall opinion of shunning the regular.  We love that-of course Whom You Know is highlighting the most interesting always and Fancy Nancy is just that!  Nancy, although quite young, is a girl into details and accentuation.  This is the original in a series that we will be bringing you.  Other than the obvious entertainment, this book is excellent for kicking your child's vocabulary up a notch.  Our panel thought:

This first book of the series is a heartwarming and amusing introduction to the world of Fancy Nancy.  Nancy is an adorable little girl who has a penchant for making the most mundane things extraordinary.  She’s just got a knack for making things special and strives to escape the ho-hum of day-to-day activities.  From lace-trimmed soccer socks to frilly toothpicks, Nancy loves to dress up every aspect of her life.  Nancy is surrounded by ordinary people, however, and wants to teach her family to be fancy.  The story of Fancy Nancy takes the reader on a little adventure as she gets them to step away from the usual for one evening and embrace the extravagance that makes Nancy who she is.

The story, its main character, and its “message” are both entertaining and endearing.  As a parent reading this story with my daughter, I truly felt compelled to indulge more often in the imaginative play in which so many toddlers and young children find so much joy.  I mean, I know it’s a book, but even I sat there reading, thinking, “Wow, what great parents!  Would I do that for my daughter?”  And all I can say is “I HOPE SO!”

What a breath of fresh air the Fancy Nancy books are as the world seems to become more and more common. We have lost that glamorous celebration for life that Fancy Nancy seems to embrace. The Fancy Nancy books bring a smile to both my face and my two year old who loves to copy Fancy Nancy’s Marvelous (that’s the fancy way of saying great) way of speaking. In the original Fancy Nancy, an introduction to a precocious little girl, who would never agree with “less is more”. And boy does Fancy Nancy have fun! FN has the best of times beautifying her family up to styling her dogs hair. She creates the ultimate clubhouse and always eats with her pinky finger up. FN never seems to disappoint. But amidst all the silliness and glitz are good lessons to be learned.

When Fancy Nancy grows up, we hope she reads Whom You Know, but we hope she never grows up!  We look forward to telling you more about her adventures and her incredible young sense of style.
