LUXURY COSMETICS WITH A CONSCIENCE INTRODUCING JOSIE MARAN COSMETICS

WHAT IT IS: A model new approach to makeup. The “green is gorgeous” mentality has certainly been embraced by the masses. Everywhere you look, from home design and cars to fashion and beauty, there are chic, environmentally-conscious options. But while the world of skincare has certainly followed suit, the makeup industry is lagging behind. Until now. Introducing Josie Maran Cosmetics, a complete collection of pure, natural and evolved cosmetics that is equally chic, luxurious and beautiful.

THE BACKGROUND: Josie Maran is synonymous with beauty. As the face of Maybelline cosmetics for an unprecedented ten years, she was the spokesmodel for one of the most popular national makeup brands in the country. Yet Josie is hardly your typical glamour girl. In fact, she didn’t even like to wear makeup when she first became a model. The child of bohemian artists, Josie grew up in Northern California with a mother who was a “true beauty” who never wore a stitch of makeup. However, Josie’s attitude towards makeup changed as her modeling career kicked into overdrive and she started working with the top makeup artists in the business. They showed her how to apply makeup and helped her see that it is something that doesn’t just transform a look, but boosts confidence and the spirit as well.

When pregnant with her daughter a few years ago, Josie decided to look for natural makeup formulas to use and discovered that none lived up to the levels of sophistication and luxury she wanted. It was then she realized that after spending so many hundreds of hours in the makeup chair, she was uniquely qualified to create her own line of cosmetics, the type of makeup that she was searching for: chic, luxurious and, most importantly, healthy. Not long after the birth of her daughter, Josie Maran Cosmetics was born.

THE FORMULAS: Josie’s parents instilled in her a deep love for the natural world and an appreciation for the environment. In fact, she has always lived a healthy, organic lifestyle (from the food she eats to the car she drives) – years before it became a popular way of life. It was only natural that when she decided to create her own line of cosmetics, she was determined to create makeup that looks as good on you as it is for you. As a result, all Josie Maran Cosmetics formulas are created with natural, organic, nontoxic and gentle ingredients (including avocado, coconut, flax, jojoba, olive, soybean, beeswax, cocoa butter and shea butter), as well as innovative proprietary formulas that allow them to look and feel just like high-end luxe brands, so there is no longer a trade off between luxurious and natural.

THE PACKAGING: In keeping with Josie’s philosophy, all of the packaging is as pleasing to the planet as it is to the eye. Each product comes in sleek, rose-colored metallic packaging that is recyclable and/or biodegradable. The compacts are made of a corn based plastic (PLA), the lipsticks and concealers are all housed in aluminum, the argan oil bottled in glass, and the outer boxes are made from 30% recycled stock and soy ink.

WHAT IT COSTS: $18-$52

WHERE TO FIND IT: Now available at Sephora and online at www.josiemarancosmetics.com

Each chef created a culinary masterpiece using one of their preferred 16 Nespresso Grand Crus coffee blends for guests to taste at last night's soiree that Peachy Deegan attended, dressed in Tibi! It was a lovely night and guests were treated to everything from lamb meatballs to oysters to a duck specialty, and the night was topped off with cotton candy. Nespresso did a wonderful job with the flawlessly-executed event. A photo booth inside the store also delighted guests as they posed with their favorite Nespresso-infused smile. The event celebrated the introduction of Nespresso’s new, urban-inspired CitiZ machine available exclusively at Sur La Table for the month of August and in leading department stores, gourmet kitchen stores, specialty stores and Nespresso Boutiques nationwide in September.

For more on this fabulous new machine and all else Nespresso that we love, see our column "Gotham Gadgets."

Gotham Gadgets: SHINY, SLIM AND SEXY – AND OF COURSE, SUBLIME COFFEE New Nespresso® CitiZ Range Delivers on All Fronts

Gleaming red fire trucks, statuesque buildings with industrial steel gray finishes, sleek black limousines, white sports cars, and the “clickity clack” of a woman’s patent leather high heels are just some of the delightful sights and sounds of cities around the world.

The new Nespresso CitiZ machine range takes its inspiration from the streets – literally – of major cities around the globe. The colors of well-known focal points and objects, the design and shapes of buildings and landmarks, and the urban vibe and attitude of cities led Nespresso designers to create a new generation of Nespresso machines.

For the first time in the company’s history, Nespresso is launching a range of three machines simultaneously, which include:

* Nespresso CitiZ – a single-head automatic espresso machine
* Nespresso CitiZ & Milk – a single-head automatic espresso machine with a built-in fresh milk frother
* Nespresso CitiZ & Co. (not available in North America) – the first-ever double-head machine designed for at-home use

Besides being able to prepare the perfect Nespresso coffee that the company is so well known for, the colors and design of the machines are the stand-out difference, setting this range apart from the machines already available. Designed in a slim format to easily fit into smaller urban spaces, the machines evoke a downtown vibe and have a daring style. They were designed in two styles, both retro and high tech, to give design-loving coffee aficionados more choices:

* Modern and retro style is available in 60’s White and Limousine Black
* High-tech style is available in Fire Engine Red and Steel Gray

The CitiZ range was developed by Nespresso and designed by Nespresso’s long-time design partner, Antoine Cahen, designer from Les Ateliers du Nord in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Cahen expresses his viewpoint on the CitiZ range: “In naming the series, we always had the entire collection on the table, sometimes arranged in different ways. To me they looked like buildings, which make up an entire city. The Nespresso Machine Marketing team then came up with the name CitiZ, which I think is a good reflection of the range. It has a strong personality.”

Like all Nespresso machines, the range contains the technologically advanced and patented Nespresso extraction and brewing system, which controls all of the elements needed to create the perfect coffee. The entire CitiZ range is equipped with an automatic power-save mode to reduce energy consumption.

The new Nespresso CitiZ range (SRP from $279 to $349) will be available beginning August 1, 2009 exclusively at Sur La Table and September 1, 2009 in leading department stores, gourmet kitchen stores, specialty stores, Nespresso Boutiques in New York, Boston and Montréal, Nespresso Boutique-in-Shop locations (Bloomingdale’s in SoHo, Chevy Chase, Md., Costa Mesa, Calif., and Chicago, and the Bay in Toronto and Vancouver), and through the Nespresso Club (1.800.562.1465 or www.nespresso.com).

Features:

* Nespresso exclusive brewing unit
* 19-bar high-pressure pump
* Automatic power-save mode reduces energy consumption
* Easy capsule insertion and ejection
* Removable 34-ounce/1-liter water container
* Size: CitiZ – 5.1 x 10.9 x 14.6 in / 13 x 27.8 x 37.2 cm (W x H x D)
* Size: CitiZ & Milk – 9.3 x 10.9 x 14.6 in / 23.7 x 27.8 x 37.2 cm (W x H x D)

Colors and Suggested Retail Price:

Parent Review of Dr. Fresh Toothbrushes

As you remember from our original post:

http://www.whomyouknow.com/2009/05/petite-peachy-loves-ireflya-boppin.html

Kids love these toothbrushes! In honor of our fabulous tester, whom we will call Petite Peachy, we post this today as it is her birthday!

Recently her parent wrote in and we thought their opinion was important:

Brushing teeth with our 3-year-old has almost never been easy. Not only is it hard for us, it’s also hard for her. With Dr. Fresh toothbrushes though, tooth-brushing time is fun! My daughter’s Dr. Fresh toothbrush plays music for one minute at the press of a button—long enough to do the top or bottom. Dentists recommend 2 minutes of brushing time, so it’s easy to keep track of how much we are brushing and to make sure we are brushing thoroughly enough. The bristles are soft, just like her ordinary toothbrush, and she loves the color (hers is pink and blue, but there are a variety of colors to pick from). Not only do Dr. Fresh toothbrushes come in an assortment of colors, but there is also a variety of timers. For those who would prefer a silent toothbrush, some Dr. Fresh brushes come with a flashing light timer that blinks inside the handle. Kids love it, and it’s a great way to get them to brush with no fuss!

At Whom You Know, our panel of experts reviewed one body butter and one comforting night cream from this line:

ULTRA MOISTURIZING BODY BUTTER With Revitalizing Lemon & Coriander Essential Oils

8.8 oz/$32.50

Extra-rich body butter seems to melt on your skin while mango, avocado, and coconut moisturize and recondition even the driest skin to silky softness. Their essential oil blend - featuring lemon, coriander, galbanum, and star anise - infuses the senses with energy and vitality.

Here is what our panel thought:

"This is a lightly scented cream but is very moisturizing, as per its name. This is great for the usually dry & rough patches of skin on your elbows, knees, and especially your feet during the summer sandals season."

"I loved the smooth, soft feeling left on my feet and legs the entire next day by the Ultra Moisturizing Body Butter-! It makes bunions, calluses and very dry feet and toes feel GREAT! I will continue to use and recommend it. I tried wearing sneaker socks to enhance the "softness" in my feet."

"The Body butter has a great scent and I applied it before bed. Unlike other Body Butter products it did not clog my pores and it was not greasy. It left my skin touchably smooth and ready to flirt"

"It absorbs so quickly, and has a beautiful lemon scent!"

"Distillations Aromatherapy Ultra Moisturizing Body Butter with revitalzing lemon and coriander essential oils was fabulously used after bathing in the body wash (which Whom You Know reviewed yesterday). This product is in the form of a "balm". It is something you would use sparingly, but the scent lingers throughout the day -- you do not need much of this for a lasting effect. Loved it!"

The bottom line from Peachy Deegan:
This is the kind of product you need for top moisture. You do not need a lot of it to see the lasting results, and they do last throughout the day. It is a high quality product that seals in moisture and is especially effective in areas that are more susceptible to dryness like the elbows, knees, and feet. Although you might think it is more of a winter product- it is great in the summer for feet!

COMFORTING BODY NIGHT CREAM With Relaxing Lavender & Rosewood Essential Oils

6.8 fl oz/$29.50

Envelop your senses and calm your spirit with their relaxing blend of essential oils – featuring lavender, rosewood with violet and tonka - while preparing for a peaceful sleep. Argan and shea butter help nurture and condition your skin while anti-oxidant rich squalene derived from olives moisturizes. Before sleep, apply generously all over the body with thoughtful application to the shoulders and neck.

Here is what our panel thought:

"I loved the soft, subtle feel and smell of the Comforting Body Night Cream...I had NO allergic reaction to it, and wore it comfortably all day long under my liquid face foundation. Great results! Will continue to use and recommend it."

"I loved the sweet soothing scent of Lavender in this night cream. It went on silky smooth and when I awoke from my peaceful sleep my skin was rejuvenated."

"The Comforting Body Night Creme soothed my senses before bed and I woke up with smooth skin. What I liked about the product is that it wasn't greasy to wear to bed and after many uses did not block my pores. It actually looked to reduce fine lines. It left me de-stressed and ready to cuddle up!"

"My body felt very smooth after using at bedtime!"

"Distillations aromatherapy comforting body night cream with relaxing lavendar and rosewood essential oils is just what you need for a good night's sleep. It is very soothing. This thick, fast-absorbing cream is heaven!"

"This is the perfect accompaniment following a late night bath. The lavender scent is very calming and smoothing, the texture is very lightweight but is moisturizing too. There's nothing better than the scent of lavender to lull you to sleep."

The bottom line from Peachy Deegan:
This cream I prefer to use at night because it is so comforting that if I put it on in the morning, I would probably be less motivated to write about it (!) because it puts you in such a laid-back relaxed mood. The smell, the consistency and overall richness of the product are perfect for nighttime moisture.

DESIGN IN ITS PUREST FORM Style, elegance and tradition united with a spirit of outstanding innovation: a classic taste for state-of-the-art yachts

Riva: just the name conjures up a whole series of images and passions across the 160-year history of the world’s oldest and most famous boatyard for luxury craft.

With a range of 10 open and fly models from 33’ to 115’ (10 to 35 meters) with an unmistakable style, Riva boats are craft products of the highest quality with an inimitable allure. Every Riva is a true jewel, an emblem of that Italian design that is envied the world over. This classic style, so characteristic of the boatyard’s tradition, is combined with a highly innovative spirit: since the time of Carlo Riva the boats have been built to meticulous design criteria.

The perfect expression of Italian craftsmanship thanks to carefully selected fixtures and fittings (B&B seating, Frau and Minotti upholstery, Dedar fabrics, Richard Ginori porcelain, furniture by Scarpa and Antonio Luppi, Flexform tables), Riva boats are refined floating homes. The furnishings represent a compendium of styles: all the accessories, from the straw and paper carpet to the revolving seats, come from the finest Italian domestic traditions.

The continuity between past and future makes Riva boats both up-to-date and timeless, with a unique charm. All the boats are given a precise personality, with meticulous attention to detail. The lines, joinery, chrome plating, lacquering, leather, fabrics and trimmings give the boat an exclusive identity and demonstrate an elegant and sophisticated taste.

The style of Riva boats starts in the sketches of Mauro Micheli, who in 1994 founded Officina Italiana Design with Sergio Beretta. The studio, which works exclusively on the design of Riva boats, perceives the vessel as a fish, the most elegant and spirited fish of all, the shark.

"Working for a boatyard like Riva is a daily challenge," says Micheli. “It means working to the highest quality standards, both in terms of manpower and materials employed, and with extremely high expectations. Our passion is for a classic, essential, clean style of design where the key word is ‘remove’ rather than ‘add’. The aim is to achieve the essence of a unique, unmistakable style, where innovation meets and grows in harmony with a tradition that has now become legend.”

Peachy Deegan Recommends Fire Island Beer Company's Lighthouse Ale

We first introduced you to this brand new beer:

http://www.whomyouknow.com/2009/07/champage-wishes-fire-island-beer.html

Now that Peachy has had some, she only wishes it had been around longer! If you scroll down to the bottom of the page and see The Deegan girls out drinking in Manhattan in the 1940's, they look like they could do with some!

Fire Island Beer Company's Lighthouse Ale has a fresh, summer taste that would go well with a meal or at happy hour. Even if you are stuck in the oppressive humidity in Manhattan this week, a bottle of this will mentally transport you to the beach! Peachy Deegan just loves the beach, and next time she goes there will be a bottle of Fire Island Beer Company's Lighthouse Ale in her hot little hand (although her beer will come from the cooler! Serve chilled!).

In the nine weeks that they've been on the market, they've drastically exceeded their sales expectations and currently have a very active Facebook Fan base which is at approximately 650 followers. (Seems like they are growing at a Whom You Know pace!) Their company is on the go! In just nine weeks, they have successfully placed Fire Island Lighthouse Ale in 647 accounts including excellent restaurants (Bobby Vans Steakhouse, Boqueria and Gordon Ramsey), chain accounts (711, Wholefoods, Morton Williams, Food Emporium) and excellent draught bars (Galway Hooker, Puck Fair, and Half Pint). They say it's the kind of beer you want to have a beer with-we agree. Drinking all Champagne and no beer would indeed make Peachy Deegan a dull girl, and she could not be happier that she found Fire Island Beer Company's Lighthouse Ale!

We look forward to featuring Jeff Glassman as a Mover and Shaker!

"The combination of lemon and coriander revitalizes your skin by giving it some pep while treating it to the natural moisturizing properties of citrus. It is tingly, upbeat and energetic, the equivalent of a ray of sunshine contained in a body wash."

"The oil blend of lemon and coriander is so fresh and energizing!"

"Distillations Skin Conditioning Body Wash with revitalizing lemon and coriander essential oils: Used this is the morning before heading off to work. Great way to wake up in the morning - left my skin very soft. The smell is divine!"

"A nice clean wash without "heavy" lingering scents, just "refreshing" and smooth."

The bottom line from Peachy Deegan: After the previous product puts you to sleep, this one wakes you up! This line is well-suited for night and day, and this is like your Nespresso for your face! It is has a pleasant clean smell and will leave your skin refreshed.

8.5 fl oz /$17.50

Our own Purifying blend of essential oils – featuring eucalyptus and lime with rosemary and armoise - help to clear your senses. Seaweed extracts and sea salts deep cleanse your skin.

Our panel thought:

"I enjoyed using this Body wash as it cleaned well without being too harsh on my skin. It also had an awakening mint scent that worked well to awaken my sleepy eyes in the morning."

"I feel so clean after use and love the eucalyptus scent, very uplifting!"

"Distillations Deep Cleansing Body Wash - with purifying eucalyptus and lime essential oils. Lime is one of my favorite scents -- it is crisp, refreshing and very gentle. The eucalyptus adds a touch of calm after a hard days work. A perfect balance."

"The scent of this body wash is thoroughly invigorating & bracing, it lives up to its name in cleansing very well but without stripping away the natural oils in your skin. Along with the Refreshing Body Lotion, it is the perfect morning shower routine when your skin needs an energy boost."

"This product is stimulating; it rinses off really well...it makes one want to sing in the shower!!!"

The bottom line from Peachy Deegan: If the previous body wash was your Nespresso in the morning, this one is your DOUBLE Nespresso. It does a fabulous job in invigorating all your senses (Except taste of course! Do not eat it! Go read Peachy's Picks if you are hungry.) and we absolutely love love love the eucalyptus scent. We are healthy now, but if we were ill we would want to use this as it was so soothing.

Eat, Drink and Be Healthy: Vitamins

Question from Whom You Know:
What vitamins are the best to take and why? Does it matter if they are effervescent?

Answer from our expert, Karim Fugel, CHHC, Reiki Practitioner, CST:
With the depleted nutrient content of our soil, we now recommend that most people take a multi-vitamin. Also because it is hard for people to get sufficient Omega 3's so we suggest they supplement with that as well.
Effervescent vitamins have been touted to have a better quality of absorption but we have not found that to be true.

GIUSEPPE DESIDERIO
EXECUTIVE CHEF/MANAGING PARTNER

A graduate from the Istituto F. Caracciolo in Naples, Italy, Giuseppe “Beppe” Desiderio was strongly influenced by his mother’s passion for the culinary arts. It was a combination of Beppe’s early days growing up on the island of Capri, Italy and his family history in the restaurant business that led him to a successful culinary career. Since 1909, his family has owned and operated several restaurants frequented by the jet set crowd in Italy including La Capannina, Da Giorgio and Aurora Ristoranti, which remain open today.

In the United States, Beppe has owned and operated many successful venues where he combined his innate ability to attract celebrities and cater to the local communities. His roster of restaurants include: La Trattoria di Capri in Palm Beach, Florida; La Piazzetta di Quisisana in New York City; Rubi Red and Ristorante Capri in East Hampton; and Grappa Wine Bar in Sag Harbor.

In 1996, New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani acknowledged Beppe for his sponsorship of the Citymeals-on-wheels program. He was also recognized in the cookbook, Naples at the Table, by radio host and former New York Daily News restaurant critic Arthur Schwartz, who featured one of his original recipes.

As executive chef and managing partner of the new Blue Sky Mediterranean Lounge in Sag Harbor, Beppe’s vast experience and European influences erupt into a Mediterranean menu focusing on casual and light fare.

About The Bohemian National Hall
The Bohemian National Hall, designed by William C. Frohne in the Renaissance Revival style and built in 1896, has been an important center for Czech and Slovak culture in New York City for more than one hundred years. It is a rare survivor of the social halls built in the nineteenth century for New York City's immigrant and ethnic communities, and a significant reminder of a major working-class ethnic enclave which once flourished in Yorkville; thus becoming a very visible representative of an important aspect of immigrant history in New York City and the United States. Since the beginning, the Hall has served as a focal point for its community, offering ethnic food, Czech language courses, Czech history classes and spaces for its large community' meetings and various events. In 2001, ownership of the Bohemian National Hall was transferred from the Bohemian Benevolent & Literary Association (BBLA) to the government of the Czech Republic which reconstructed the building completely in the following years.

The building now hosts Consulate General of the Czech Republic and promoter of Czech culture, government agency Czech Center New York. The BBLA has retained the entire third floor and is still gladly considered as an integral part of the whole building. After the grand re-opening in October 2008, the Bohemian National Hall has truly become a common space for organizing events and presenting not only Czech culture, trade and tourism to the Czechs living in the U.S. and the Americans but also it has become available for renting outside the Czech community for a variety of events ranging from cultural events and business meetings to movie screenings and private events. www.bohemiannationalhall.com

RIVA: FROM MAHOGANY TO FIBERGLASS: THE HISTORY OF THE BOATYARD THAT BECAME A LEGEND

The world-famous firm, over 160 years on the crest of a wave

The history of the Riva boatyard began in 1842 on Lake Iseo in Sarnico (Bergamo) with Pietro Riva, a carpenter who had moved there from Lake Como. It continued with Ernesto, followed by Serafino, who loved racing, and lastly Carlo, who created a style that made a name for itself all over the world as a synonym for elegance and impeccable taste. Riva’s story is one of pure Italian style, a history of pleasure boating. Ernesto introduced the internal combustion engine in 1880 and with his son Serafino’s passion for racing, performance became a distinctive feature of all Riva yachts.

During the Thirties, Sarnico was one of the most active boatyards on the international motor boating scene. Influenced by the first competitions held, on 1 May 1912 Serafino reached a speed of 24 km/h in a racing yacht during an international race – a feat achieved for the very first time. Motor yacht competitions began to enjoy huge success, giving rise to the holding of important international events all over the country. Serafino Riva won one of the most famous, the Pavia-Venice, two years running, in 1931 and 1932, establishing the record of the period by racing at a speed of 52 km/h.

Reconstruction of Italy was in full swing and bridges, motorways and towns were being built all over the country. Society was going through an industrial revolution and the automobile became a rising star. Carlo Riva created an alter ego for this star, namely a range of wooden yachts featuring an unmistakable design. The line, interiors, steering wheel, dashboard and driving position of the Ariston, the first example of what would develop into several generations of motorboats, made it the very first luxurious water “automobile”. This brought a new, all-Italian dimension to an important period of the year, the holidays, and Riva yachts became inviting, smart, sensual, vain.

In 1969, when the first fiberglass yacht appeared, the lovers of tradition were horrified. The farsighted Riva boatyard, however, knew how to innovate while still respecting tradition. Indeed, Carlo Riva’s last contribution to a Riva which was no longer really his own, was to ennoble and enrich the yacht by “combining cold plastic with a touch of warm wood”, creating a happy union between mahogany and fiberglass.

After various passages, in May 2000 Riva joined the Ferretti Group, one of the world leaders in luxury yachting, heralding the onset of a new period of development and innovation. The Ferretti Group, led by President Norberto Ferretti, currently encompasses Ferretti Yachts, Pershing, Riva, Itama, Bertram, Apreamare, Mochi Craft, CRN e Custom Line. Since joining the Group, Riva has developed a portfolio of ten models ranging from 30 to 115 feet (10 to 35 meters).

Headed by its CEO Ferruccio Rossi since 2006, Riva continues to be synonymous all over the world with style, beauty, innovation, design and quality. The study of new models, featuring unique designs and top quality in all aspects, is entrusted to Mauro Micheli and his Officina Italiana Design. Riva fully expresses what Italian creativity and industriousness are capable of producing for the joy, pleasure and wonder of all those who love the sea and luxury.

In 2005, the Sarnico boatyard opened its gates to the general public for the very first time after more than 160 uninterrupted years of history – the doors to the Factory of Dreams were finally open.

The American style ale will be the first of several unique craft beer recipe styles inspired by the experience of Fire Island.

Lighthouse Ale is the handiwork of two brothers and a cousin who developed their taste for craft beer and home brewing during the summers they spent on Fire Island, the naturally beautiful and very colorful barrier island just off of Long Island’s south shore. The ultra-relaxed island has attracted families, partiers, weekend beach-goers and outdoor sports lovers for generations, yet it refuses to allow cars, pretention and the frantic pace common to NY-metro area culture. This led the Fire Island Beer Company founders to coin it “The Other New York”, a concept they find very refreshing.

“We really wanted to make a beer that captured the laidback spirit and awesome character that you find on Fire Island, and Lighthouse Ale is that beer,” said Jeff Glassman, President and Marketing Director for Fire Island Beer Company. “After many years spent perfecting the recipe and sharing our beer with the community on Fire Island, we couldn’t be more thrilled to share it with the world.”

Co-founder and Head Beer Maestro, Tom Fernandez added, “The story of Lighthouse Ale begins at The Shack. It was a super casual lunch counter and bar in between the bay and the ocean in Atlantique Beach and we ran it during the summers when we were younger. It didn’t matter if you were a local, a surfer, a fishermen or a weekender…everybody gathered there and shared stories and laughs over a few beers. It was full of really easygoing people with a ton of character, just like Fire Island itself, so the vibe there was awesome. We always wanted to craft a beer that fit in there, so we started brewing Lighthouse Ale.”

Lighthouse Ale is a delicious golden to amber American style ale that is the product of four types of malts and three varieties of domestic hops. It is brewed to have a soft carbonation and light caramel finish that make it easy to drink, yet it has the toasty round body of a sturdy American ale to give it real substance. Truly easygoing with a lot of character, or as Fernandez likes to say, “…the kind of beer you want to have a beer with.”

What started many years ago as a basement home brewing experiment has grown into a meticulously crafted and well-received beer. Tom Fernandez and his brother Bert, Co-Founder and Account Manager, did not want to risk the recipe’s integrity in order to share it with a wider audience, so they enlisted some expert industry help from the Olde Saratoga Brewing Company (www.oldesaratogabrew.com) to bring their inaugural batches to life.

"Olde Saratoga has always supported the spirit of craft brewing,” said Paul McErlean, Head Brewer at Olde Saratoga Brewing Company. “When Fire Island came to us it was an exciting opportunity because we've never worked with a true home brew recipe before. The final product is outstanding and we are really happy to partner with these brewers as they share Lighthouse Ale with the world. From taste, to ingredients to marketing, they seem to be doing it all right."

To share Fire Island Lighthouse Ale with the people, the group has partnered with distribution heavyweight Manhattan Beer (www.manhattanbeer.com). As the largest single market beer distributor in the U.S., Manhattan’s Craft and Micro Division will be responsible for selling the new brand into target on and off-premise accounts in Long Island, Manhattan and Southern Westchester during its first year.

To help create a unique look and feel for Lighthouse Ale, Fire Island Beer Company turned to local branding and design boutique rocketdog (www.rocketdognyc.com). The innovative branding features original artwork and copy that will anchor all packaging, point of sale materials and digital applications for the beer company and its first offering. One way the brand will share its spirit is through the use six separate ‘stories’ that can be found randomly on the rear labels of its bottles. Each will communicate something different about The Other New York and the mindset found there. For example:

“If you ever visit Fire Island, you’ll

need to remember a few things

while you’re here. First, cars aren’t

allowed on the island so learn to

pack lightly. Second, respect the deer.

They run this island. Third, renters

take note: Never leave your trash sitting

outside before Sunday. (Trust us.) And

finally, grab a Lighthouse Ale, sip and

repeat. Life isn’t that complicated here

in The Other New York.”

“When we started Fire Island Beer Company we set out with one mission: To create world-class craft beers that are inspired by the color, character and the delicious experience of Fire Island. This is our first big step in realizing that mission,” said Glassman. “We are all about good times and great beer…and this is just the beginning.”

Lighthouse Ale is available in single 12oz bottles, 6-packs and 15.5 gallon kegs and is available to ship immediately.

July 29 DKNY

From our fabulous friends at DKNY:

On Wednesday evening, DKNY will be celebrating CITYarts, an organization
that literally provides color to the streets of New York – and to the lives
of New Yorkers. To support this wonderful charity we will have two very
special items available to purchase - the DKNY Chari-Tee and 8 totes
designed by NYC students for CITYarts.

DKNY has designed a tee with a cause, which we call the "Chari-Tee". This
is our way to give back to the city that inspires us. DKNY's Chari-Tee, is
an interactive program between DKNY and those who love and wear it.

DKNY's Chari-Tee retails for $65 and benefits a menu of NYC organizations.
Each hangtag lists five NYC charities to which you can donate. Once you've
decided, log on to dkny.com and select your organization of choice. DKNY
will then donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale of your Chari-tee.
It's a fun, cool way to send instant love to NYC.

Below is a list of organizations we are giving back to and a shot of the
Chari-tee.

The Fund for Public Schools
City Harvest
The Doe Fund
The Urban Zen Foundation
and
CITYarts

CITYarts empowers children and youth by bringing them together with
professional artists to create public art that addresses civic and social
issues, impacts their lives and transforms their communities.

In addition to the Chari-tee, DKNY has produced eight different
'eco-friendly printed' totes featuring artwork of eight NYC students,
created for the CITYarts "portraits of peace" initiative. There are 5 of
each style – 40 unique bags in total. The totes were printed using an
eco-friendly digital printing process. The resulting water-based design is
printed without screens or films and utilizes less ink with no excess ink
waste.
The totes are $25 each and all the proceeds go back to CITYarts. The totes
will only be available at the DKNY store on Madison Avenue.

In addition to the Chari-Tee & Totes, we will be giving shoppers a 10%
discount on their purchase PLUS an additional 10% of their purchase will go
to CITYarts!

NIGHTLIGHT: Molyvos Hosts MEDITERRANEAN HOT AND SPICY Book Signing

Last night Molyvos hosted a booksigning which Peachy Deegan was happy to attend. Molyvos prepared Greek dishes from this book that were a delight to all guests. This is all about the book:

“I hope my recipes will inspire you to use the abundance of seasonal produce available in your area to prepare dishes with clear, vivid, and invigorating flavors.” – Agalia Kremezi

International expert on Greek Cuisine and renowned chef Aglaia Kremezi has always loved food with flavor as bright, intense, and exciting as the Mediterranean Coast that she calls home. Her first collection of recipes, The Foods of Greece, earned her the Julia Child Award for the best first cookbook from the International Association of Culinary Professionals. Now, in her latest cookbook, MEDITERRANEAN HOT AND SPICY (Broadway Books; On-Sale May 12, 2009; $19.95), Aglaia brings her signature style of cooking and passion for fresh dishes that are packed with color, aroma, and flavor to the American kitchen with a collection of recipes from her travels in and around the Mediterranean Sea. These authentic, easy to prepare dishes are enjoyed throughout the region – in Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, France, and Lebanon. With each, Aglaia incorporates the local spices and peppers that give each dish an appealing dose of eat. But these aren’t the same heavy spices or five-alarm peppers that we’re used to from the cuisines of Mexico, India and China. Instead, they pack a punch that is both pleasingly hot, and completely comfortable for the average epicurean.

Dive into the Mediterranean with appetizers like homemade Hummus and Spicy Garlic Chickpeas, or Fried Mussels in Ouzo Butter. There are salads, spreads and marinades, alongside such delicious main courses as Slow Baked Lamb with Wheat Berries, Spicy, Light Moussaka, Lamb Tagine with Dried Figs and Sesame Seeds, and Skillet Pork from Kea.

And the flavor doesn’t end with dinner: desserts like Sweet Couscous with Orange Preserves, Sultanas, and Pistachios, and Fig and Yogurt Semifreddo, add a tangy finish to any meal. Featuring gorgeous full-color photographs throughout, plus a variety of helpful hints from Aglaia, MEDITERRANEAN HOT AND SPICY is the perfect book for anyone who appreciates great flavor, fresh ingredients, and a little bit of spice in the kitchen!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

AGLAIA KREMEZI, an internationally known expert on Greek cuisine, is the author of The Foods of Greece, which won the Julia Child Award for the best first cookbook from the International Association of Culinary Professions. She has lectured around the world about Greek and Mediterranean food and runs a widely respected cooking school on the Greek island of Kea, where she lives.

Whom You Know looks forward to featuring Molyvos in Tasty Tidbits!

Jon Gosselin, Jon & Kate Plus 8
Michael Lohan with fiancée Erin Mueller

Honorary Chair, Costas Kondylis with Laurie L. Schaffran & Marion Waxman presented the 6th Annual Hamptons Happening, Cooks & Croupiers: Chef Tastings, Casino & Live Auction, hosted by Susan and Louis Meisel at The Sagaponack Sculpture Field.

The 6th Annual Hamptons Happening, Cooks & Croupiers, raised $265,000 to benefit the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation, as guests – such as Jon Gosselin and Michael Lohan with fiancée Erin Mueller – enjoyed gourmet bites from the chef tasting stations, danced to the live jazz band, bid on items during the exciting live and silent auctions and tried their luck at the casino tables, all for an amazing cause. Peachy Deegan thought it was lovely to meet guests Cynthia and Tony Shogren, in the photo above, who left their wonderful resort, Dunmore Beach Club, (www.dunmorebeach.com)in Harbour Island, Bahamas, to make it to the fabulous soiree. Tony Shogren has been a member of this board for 35 years! Cynthia's shell drop earrings are Rock Your Body-worthy and Tony's green pants would have landed him in Fashion Fridays if we had just met him a day earlier...

In his keynote speech, Dr. Samuel Waxman addressed the work the Foundation is currently accomplishing— developing treatments to successfully address breast cancer, particularly the form that devastatingly affects young women, and to examine and resolve the reasons why cancer re-occurs within patients once it has been successfully cured. Through the encouraging research that the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation has conducted in their mission to cure cancer, Dr. Waxman looks forward to promising prospects, closing his address, “It keeps me young and passionate to see such an exciting future ahead.”

The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF) is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization focusing on one of the most promising strategies for developing cures and treatments for many types of cancer; even offering hope for preventing cancer from developing. It is on the cutting edge of a revolution with alternatives to the traditional treatments of chemotherapy and radiation, which kill cancer (and healthy) cells. Foundation supported research includes reprogramming chaotically growing cancer cells to behave normally and understanding cancer stem cells’ ability to spread and resistance to treatment. The results will lead to precisely targeted treatments or preventatives having minimal side effects on the recipients. Participating restaurants at the event included Annie’s Organic Café, Bobby Van’s, Brandt Beef, Cavaniola’s Gourmet Cheese Shop, Chef Pierrot Signature Catering, DuFour Pastry Kitchens, The Fudge Shoppe, Ichiban Sushi, il laboratoria de gelato, Kneaded Bread, La Masseria, Leo’s Latticini, Magnolia Bakery, Manhattan Chili, Nichol’s, Pure Dark, The Seafood Shop, Shun Lee, Susan Meisel, Town Line BBQ and Tutto Il Giorno. MOVERS AND SHAKERS: Pamela Friedman, Creator of Maxim's de Paris®

Pamela Friedman is a true Manhattan tastemaker and trendsetter. Having lived in New York City for the past 30 years, she enjoys the socialite scene as much as any New Yorker, but has found a way to balance the hustle and bustle of city life with an environmental, natural and holistic approach to her home life and career. Her credentials, as well as personal holistic lifestyle, exemplify her beliefs and she both inspires and delivers this naturalist approach to her audience and consumers in each and every aspect of her business.

Pamela has enjoyed a marketing and creative career in the beauty, home design and fragrance categories and has brought to fruition many products in which we are so very familiar. After graduating from Parsons School of Design, her interest in fashion, home décor and creation of scent led her in the direction of home fragrances, where she quickly established a reputation as an accomplished designer and creator of products. In fact, she played an integral role in the successes for brands like Crabtree & Evelyn and Victoria’s Secret Beauty. She’s also the mastermind behind the great Felissimo Store on 56th Street, which we all loved and now greatly miss. It was there that she truly fell in love with fragrances. Living in Manhattan, the mecca of shopping and consumerism, has influenced her to create products that stand out – beautiful, elegant and sophisticated — and, not only smell good, but are meaningful and good for you!

It was this drive, entrepreneurial spirit, and vision of luxury and nourishment for the soul that influenced Pamela to create her own brands.

Her love of Paris, and her friendship with Pierre Cardin was the start of her intrigue with the notoriety of the beginnings of the Maxim’s restaurant and Belle Époque era of celebrity, decadence, and elegance as well as Sem, the well-known artists’ renditions; and, of course, the French tradition of harmonizing scents. She sought to capture the nostalgia of this period which represented a carefree but rich feeling. It was this inspiration that led her to create Maxim's de Paris® Home fragrance products, which captures the essence of the vibrant spirit of the Maxim’s Cafe during the turn-of the-century. Maxim’s de Paris® Home fragrance collection launched in New York’s Bergdorf Goodman as well as many of the best specialty boutiques in the U.S. Maxim’s is a line of soy based candles that draws our interest and greatly influences our moods. The brand is known for its quality, luxurious essences and whimsical uniqueness as they are multi-layered with high quality natural essences.

Pamela also recognized a need in home fragrance that not only provided aroma but provided aroma with benefit. Living Naturals® home fragrance products bridge beauty and design with a lifestyle of wellness and balance. While the products incorporate all the elements of a healthy home — aromatherapy, purification, essential oils and holistic healing, they also enhance our mind and spirit.

Pamela draws her inspiration from the rich culture of Manhattan life and her travels around the world; including design, architecture, and the natural world of flowers and plants. All of her products are developed with wellness, beauty and sustainability in mind and offer choices for those who are pursuing healthier and more meaningful lifestyles. She focuses on creating mind and body driven benefit products with a multi-sensory approach. As a holistic lifestyle designer, her approach is simple, timeless and sophisticated and her products represent a lifestyle that is effortlessly chic, elegant, eco-conscious and healthy – where design, style, and wellness play an equal role.

Pamela’s home fragrance brands are a whole new level of beauty and wellness. She is a true home fragrance guru who is dedicated to enhancing lives and participating in the protection of our environment for years to come.

Pamela is currently a member of the Natural Products Association, American Botanical Council, Natural Perfumers Guild, Advisor to Ahead of the Curve, and studied Feng Shui at NY’s Open Center. Whom You Know is pleased to present her as our latest Mover and Shaker!
