A celebration of the World Hockey Association, the renegade professional hockey league that battled the NHL from 1972-79, will be a featured at the Whalers Fan Fest and Reunion on August 14 at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, CT.

The WHA ceremonies will feature the official induction of WHA legends Howard Baldwin and Andre Lacroix to the WHA Hall of Fame.

WHA HOF President Timothy Gassen will emcee the induction ceremony and will debut his new WHA Documentary on the scoreboard at Rentschler Field.   Fans will be able to buy the documentary and WHA Hall of Fame merchandise at the WHA booth.

The August 14 Whalers Summer Fan Fest and Reunion is the first major public event launching Howard Baldwin’s Whalers Sports and Entertainment group, which is working to re-establish the Whalers hockey heritage in Connecticut.

The Whalers Summer Fan Fest will feature a reunion of former WHA and NHL Whalers players, an array of Whalers merchandise, and a world premiere of the WHA HOF’s new league documentary films. The admission price to the day-long event is a $5 donation to the Whalers Wives Foundation. Complete information is available online at http://www.whalerssports.com/FanFest.html

The August 14 Hartford festivities will be the second stop on the WHA Hall of Fame’s Summer 2010 Tour. The WHA HOF will then travel from Hartford to the World Premiere of the new WHA HOF Jets documentary film with Bobby Hull and other WHA stars on August 20 in Winnipeg .

Baldwin founded the WHA’s New England Whalers, who won the WHA’s inaugural championship in 1973.  He was managing general partner through the team’s history and brought the team to Hartford, CT in 1975.  He also served as the WHA’s President from 77-79 and spearheaded the WHA-NHL agreement in 1979 that resulted in the Whalers, Quebec Nordiques, Winnipeg Jets and Edmonton Oilers joining the NHL.

Lacroix, a native of Lauzon, Quebec, was a masterful offensive professional hockey player whose points getting efforts earned him the nickname "The Magician". He played six years in the National Hockey League (NHL) all seven WHA seasons and became the rival league’s all-time leading scorer with 798 points.

Peachy first met Howard and Andre when she was a little kid, and going to Hartford Whalers games was a formative life experience for her that lead to sportswriting, and indirectly, Whom You Know.
