Terrific Takeout: Manolito!

Left to her own devices, you know Peachy Deegan would spend 50% of this column writing about different things to order off the menu at Swifty's and the other 50% eating pizza, so we are so glad we get suggestions from our readers.  Peachy definitely appreciates great food of all kinds almost, but you have to know her to understand how much she love love loves Swifty's and pizza too.  And we could not be more glad about this one.   In Terrific Takeout, this is the first South American restaurant featured ever in Manhattan and we think that also goes for the Peachy's Picks column...and we must emphasize that we are sorry we waited this long because Manolito is really terrific.  Tonight we were pleased to meet Cristina Gentile, owner of Manolito and the namesake of the amazing Paella Cristina, shown below.

Peachy Deegan has a special place in her heart for paella as the best paella she has ever had was at the Lehman Brothers Christmas party in 2001 at the Hilton, and it was the first time the firm was together since 9/11.  Dick Fuld may have his faults but bringing the firm together one night was a great feeling and nine years later Peachy remembers the paella.  Also if you read Whom You Know closely, you know Peachy is alive because she voted for Mayor Bloomberg in the election the morning of 9/11 and was late to work, avoiding walking in the path of the towers.  Well life does come full circle because when Peachy went into Manolito tonight there was a picture of Cristina and Mayor Bloomberg on the wall when you walk in.  And this paella is just as good if not better than the paella Peachy had at that Christmas party.  Saffron rice with shrimp, clams, mussels, lobster piquillo peppers and peas will delight your senses and thank you Cristina for suggesting that we order it as we are blown away.  We don't say that very often.

Peachy Deegan personally is not into Spain/South America/ Latin culture all that much-she took 6 years of French in school and claims to be mostly Irish although she is also other ethnicities...but if you are you should know they have fabulous cultural music that everyone can appreciate tied into happy hours on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday...tonight the Gimagua Brothers were featured:
AND, although Cristina does not know Peachy, yet anyway, we were thrilled to see the Rangers game on concurrently with the entertainment.  Peachy was stats girl for Boston College.  Which of course was founded by Irish immigrants, so Peachy was absolutely DYING to try the lobster mashed potatoes and we must say they are the BEST lobster mashed potatoes we've ever had! See:
Of course Peachy put it on the Mikasa plate but you should be advised this is high class takeout-it is the first one we have seen that doesn't give out tacky white plastic silverware: notice it is actually silver plastic silverware.  And we enjoyed the Cesar salad too.  Salad is always an excellent idea when you consider Peachy's regular diet of Champagne and Star Vodka.  Fabulously fresh, they even put the dressing on the side.  We love it when people listen and follow directions but we must say it does not always happen:
Manolito is an absolute winner and you need to try this Paella Cristina....and tell Cristina that Peachy sent you!  And in addition to the food being top notch, Cristina is a nice person too we can tell.  She donates her paella to charitable causes of Mayor Bloomberg and was kind to offer Peachy a glass of white wine with her when she swung by.  Even if you think you are not into Latin American food you need to try this!
