Adidas auctions paintings for 46664 charity

Some of the biggest names in football have come together to sign paintings of themselves to raise money for the Nelson Mandela foundation in South Africa. The foundation set up by the former president acts to raise awareness of HIV & Aids across the African continent, the creative work of local artists has been signed by Zinedine Zidane, Oliver Khan, and former Argentinean goalkeeper Sergio Goycochea, amongst others. Steven Pienaar of the current South Africa football team said, "I think that the education that they give about HIV and Aids in some other African countries is not as good as it is in Europe for example and this is a big problem."

Former German Captain Oliver Khan added, "I am aware that I am very lucky to have been a football player and that it is important for me to get involved with those people who were less fortunate than I was." Local born Jacob 'Baby Jake' Matlala the former WBO Flyweight World boxing Champion said, "It is a good, message sport has the power to change."

The sport has a power to change motto is just one of the many messages promoted by former South African President Mandela as Ruth Rensburg the manager of 46664 charity points out. "There is poverty there's gender violence, there's violence there's xenophobia etc and what we are saying is true to the far reaching humanitarian legacy of Nelson Mandela 46664 now incorporates all of those issues."The 46664 Nelson Mandela Charity was inspired by his Robben Island Prison Number. The paintings of current World Cup players and those of every extraordinary moment from the FIFA 2010 event are currently being auctioned on E-bay.

Metropolitan Museum Announces 5.24 Million Annual Attendance, Highest Since 2001, as Fiscal Year Ends

Attendance at The Metropolitan Museum of Art reached 5,240,000 visitors during the fiscal year that ends today, June 30, the Museum has announced.  This is the first year since 2001 that attendance at the Metropolitan has exceeded five million. The number, which includes attendance at The Cloisters museum and gardens, ranks among the highest in its entire 130-year history.
"We are pleased to announce this landmark attendance figure, which underscores the vibrancy of the Metropolitan Museum's exhibitions and collections for its audiences from around the world. It also sends a signal about the enduring importance of culture and cultural institutions to the public, especially during this period of recession," stated the Museum's Director, Thomas P. Campbell.
More than 30 exhibitions were presented during the past year.  Among the most popular with the public were Vermeer's Masterpiece The Milkmaid (September 10-November 29, 2009), with 329,446 visitors, and three current exhibitions:  Picasso in The Metropolitan Museum of Art(April 27-August 15, 2010) with 380,574 visitors to date, Doug + Mike Starn on the Roof: Big BambĂº (April 27-October 31, weather permitting) with 208,313 visitors so far, and American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity (May 5-August 15, 2010) with 175,033 visitors since its opening. Figures for the three current exhibitions reflect attendance as of June 30.

"It is especially heartening that three of the four most highly attended exhibitions for the year were drawn entirely or almost entirely from the Metropolitan Museum's permanent collection," continued Mr. Campbell.  "This is a tribute to the encyclopedic sweep and astounding depth of the collection here, and it underscores the unique ability of this institution to present a stellar exhibition program in the context of its collections of the finest examples of the visual history of the world."
Picasso in The Metropolitan Museum of Art presents 300 of the 400 works in the Met's collection by the modern master, spanning his long and legendary career.  American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity is drawn from the Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection at the Met, which was transferred to the Metropolitan Museum in 2009.  And Vermeer's MasterpieceThe Milkmaid included works from the Metropolitan's collection related to The Milkmaid, a landmark loan from Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's historic voyage from the Netherlands to New York.

Other areas of the Museum experienced notable increases as well.  Memberships increased to a record high of 138,000 members.  Visitation to the Museum's website (www.metmuseum.org) also increased by 14% to nearly 40 million. The Met's five million visitors for Fiscal Year 2010 include more than 195,000 school visitors, representing a 50% increase in school groups.

NIGHTLIGHT: Friends of Animal Rescue Host a Smashing Boat Cruise! Whom You Know Chats with Upcoming Mover and Shaker Blaine Caravaggi, Board Member and Treasurer of FOAR, about her Passion for Animals, her Outstanding Charity Mission and the Second Annual Sunset Cruise. Whom You Know Commemorates our 200th Charitable Peachy Post with Friends of Animal Rescue!

We told you party animals, this was the event of the summer to go to:
http://www.whomyouknow.com/2010/06/upcoming-nightlight-calling-all-party.html
and Upcoming Movers and Shakers Treasurer and Board Member Blaine Caravaggi and President Betsy Goldman spearheaded an evening aboard luxury yacht Atlantis that was a smashing success.

Friends of Animal Rescue provides financial aid to rescue groups and individuals who save homeless and abandoned animals, and they are a 501 (c) (3) organization and provide payment directly to veterinarians, medical boarding facilities, dog walkers, pet supply stores and more.  They keep the dream alive that individuals can make a difference and in this successful fundraiser, they put their vision into action!   The event boasted an outstanding silent auction, catering by Swifty's our most favorite restaurant in Manhattan (Peachy Picks Swifty's) and an hour long sunset cruise, and fortunately the weather held out to make the night perfect.  We hope to see you all aboard this event next year- it is not to miss!  We have written about various charitable endeavors 200 times now and this is a genuinely worthy cause with class people involved.  Peachy Deegan chatted with Blaine Caravaggi for Whom You Know.

Peachy Deegan: What drives your passion for helping animals?
Blaine Caravaggi: Animals are voiceless and need us to speak for them and their rights. I will never be able to comprehend the ability of people to inflict such unbelievable cruelty on innocent beings, either deliberate or because of ignorance.

How did you first become involved in FOAR?
I met Betsy Goldman, founder and President of FOAR, at a Best Friends Animal Society meeting here in New York.  Best Friends is the largest no kill animal sanctuary in the world and I have been a supporter of theirs for many years.  Betsy and I hit it off immediately and I have to say she is one of the most life changing people I have met.  Because of her, I was able to focus my energy and passion for animals locally.  I really feel like I am making a true difference now, beyond writing a check to a charity.

Is the Sunset Cruise an annual event?
FOAR just had our second annual Sunset Cruise in June.  Stay tuned for our June 2011 date!

How much organization goes into an event of this scale and what do you enjoy the most about it?
There is a tremendous amount of work that goes into this event.  Ticket sales, gathering silent auction donations, arranging the catering aspect, having adoptable animals on site…we literally begin planning four months ahead of the event date.  I love to organize and see results, so I enjoy the whole process, soup to nuts.

What makes FOAR such a successful charity in a challenging economy?
I think FOAR is successful in today’s economy because people can either be involved on a monetary level or by volunteering to foster a homeless animal.  You can either be very hands on or just send a check.  Either way, a little goes a very long way in such a grassroots organization.

What other events happen throughout the year in Manhattan for FOAR?
We had several events last year, other than our first Sunset Cruise.  The real stand out was in October at the Peter Tunney/Roberto Dutesco gallery in SoHo.  Roberto is widely known for his amazing project photographing the wild horses of Sable Island, an island hundreds of miles from Nova Scotia.  The horses have been there for several generations, the direct result of many shipwrecks.  There are still several bands of horses today and Roberto’s ability to capture them on camera is the most moving and spiritual photography I have ever seen. They donated several thousand dollars of sales that night to FOAR, as well as donating a photograph to our silent auction on our second cruise.  We also worked with several restaurants over many months that generously donated a percentage of sales on any given evening.

How can Manhattanites become involved in FOAR?
People can become involved in FOAR either monetarily by giving at FOAR.ORG or by sending a check to P.O. Box 91, NY, NY 10021.  We also love volunteers to help with upcoming events or to foster animals.

What makes FOAR unique among animal charities?
FOAR is unique because every board member is a volunteer and we are all very hands on.  Betsy, our President, at this moment is fostering four cats.  In the past she has fostered several dogs, often officially adopting them.  We believe in saving one animal at a time, and because we are still small, and growing, that is the most manageable way for us to be successful.  Individuals and individual efforts make all the difference!

What animals does FOAR include and does it exclude any type?
FOAR has, to my knowledge, never excluded any animal!  Dogs and cats are obviously why we are approached the most, but we have helped horses as well.  The only caveat is that the animal be in New York State.

What should everyone know about FOAR that many may not know?
What everyone should know about FOAR, that they may not be aware of, is that we work tirelessly to pull animals from euthanasia lists at city shelters.  We do this after a foster situation has been arranged, until the animal is able to be placed in a forever home. We also recently received a grant from Best Friends Animal Society and are now part of their Network for Giving, with a special place on their website for donating.

What future goals do you have for FOAR?
Future goals?  To save as many animals as we are able.  To get the word out how important it is to spay/neuter.  To build a larger foster network to save animals from death row.  And most importantly, perhaps, have people understand how important individual efforts are in making a difference in just one animal’s life.

Peachy and Polo: Star Vodka Polo's Inaugural Season! Exclusive Interview with Mover and Shaker Charles Ferri on his Winning Team

Above: Charles Ferri,  Argentinean professional Mauricio Devirent, Michael Matz, Team Captain Yvonne Morabito, Steven Sands, Jeff Resnick

We first reviewed Star Vodka last August:

We liked it so much that Charles Ferri, Founder & CEO, became a Mover and Shaker immediately:

Since then you know we've mentioned Star Vodka a few times, and since Peachy loves sports and all things that go, she was quite happy to hear that Star Vodka is now sponsoring a Polo team.  Peachy loves Polo!  Here is an exclusive interview with Charles on this hot topic.
Above: Michael Matz
Peachy Deegan: How exciting to hear that Star Vodka is now sponsoring a Polo team! How did you get involved with this venture?
Charles Ferri: It was destiny! I was at an event and met Yvonne Morabito, the team Captain, and besides the fact that I was so impressed she is a woman captain in a men’s league, she mentioned the possibility of Star Vodka being able to sponsor her team. I quickly jumped at the opportunity knowing how much I love sports and especially horses and not to mention the demographic in the polo world truly fits with the Star Vodka clientele and image, and here we are.

Most Americans are not adequately informed about Polo. Aside from the fact that your team has a great sponsor what is exciting about the sport of Polo?
Speed speed and more speed!  Polo is a team sport played at very high speeds and significant levels of danger.  Most people fail to realize that it is a highly physical contact sport.  Meanwhile, there is a lot of strategy being employed at this rapid pace.  The horses are incredible athletes, running at close to 40 mph in full gallop, and they, as well as their riders, are conditioned to "bump" opposing players/horses at that speed, and to then stop and turn on a dime.  Another fascinating and exciting aspect of the sport is that amateurs play on the same teams as professionals, so that a recreational player might be playing with and against some of the best professional players in the world.  Polo is an international sport that enjoys a global, tight-knit community of players who generally know each other directly or indirectly.  Finally, of course, for anyone who's ever hit a tennis ball, golf ball or baseball, the thrill of cracking a ball at break speed on top of a 1,000 pound galloping thoroughbred takes some of the "Yahoo!" out of other sports.

Tell us about your first game this past weekend please.
We had a tough match against a very good team.  We were neck and neck until the very last chukkers when team Star Vodka pulled ahead by two goals and managed to hold the lead to win the game.

Who is on the team and what are their strengths?
The two mainstays of the Star Vodka team are Argentinean professional Mauricio Devirent, and Team Captain Yvonne Morabito.  For our first tournament, Michael Matz and Steven Sands are the other members of our team. Mauricio is the quarterback and power engine of the team, who places passes, hundreds of yards if necessary, and well positioned to his offensive players, Yvonne Morabito and Steven Sands.  Michael Matz is the other professional on the team who works with Mauricio on devising strategy and setting the plays to score.  Matz plays heartfully and intensely, and he played a very strong game last Sunday, making a spectacular run to goal through traffic, and scoring a very crucial goal at break speed.

When Peachy was on the air in Cork (Ireland) she used to go to the pub drinking before games with the players, which is opposite from what she did in America in terms of post game celebrations only. Do the polo players drink Star Vodka before the game for a competitive edge?
Haha there will be none of that until AFTER the game then they can drink Star all they want!

Team Captain Yvonne Morabito, Steven Sands

What is the schedule and how can our readers watch Star Vodka Polo?
We will keep you posted of Star Vodka Polo Team's Schedule of Matches throughout the summer Polo Season in the Hamptons.  Polo Enthusiasts are also welcome to come watch games and practices with advance notice regarding numbers in your party.

Who are the other sponsors?
Circa, Endeavor Capital, Palmers, Equuleus.

We understand the jerseys are quite sharp. Did Hunter Dixon design them?
I’m afraid they didn’t this year. The jerseys look amazing and we actually have had numerous people asking where they can buy them so we will see.

Do the horses enjoy Star Vodka after a victory?
I’m afraid Star Vodka was developed for Homo sapiens but maybe hay infused vodka could be an idea for them??

What else should we know about Star Vodka Polo?
The Star Vodka Polo Team just hosted a private chef’s tasting and Star cocktail party at the hotspot Georgica last week. Stay tuned for more Star Vodka Polo events this summer in the Hamptons!

From our Mover and Shaker Jessica Lappin: City Council Passes Budget

Jessica Lappin is one of our Movers and Shakers:
http://www.whomyouknow.com/2009/03/movers-and-shakers-jessica-lappin-new.html

She tells us:

Last night, I voted in the City Council for an on-time and balanced budget. It was a tough year and we faced many difficult choices. Yet, I’m proud to report that we passed a responsible budget that reflects these difficult times, does not raise taxes, and still protects core city services.   As Chair of the Council’s Aging Committee, I am particularly proud that we were able to save 24 senior centers, Meals on Wheels, and other critical programs for our frailest and most vulnerable seniors.

I wanted to take a moment to fill you in on a few other budget highlights. While we had to close a projected $1.5 billion deficit for next year, we were able to do so by making smart, targeted cuts. That enabled us to avert some of the most painful suggestions that were proposed in the Mayor’s budget:

  • There will be no police layoffs or firehouse closings
  • We protected children by restoring 200 positions in the Administration for Children’s Services will be saved, allowing staff to maintain caseload levels that were established after the Nixmary Brown tragedy
  • Cultural institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Carnegie Hall, New York City Center, the American Museum of Natural History, and the Public Theater were shielded from drastic cuts
  • Pools will remain open this summer across the five boroughs
  • Library service will be preserved at five days a week
  • Funding was secured for Elder Abuse, senior centers, meals, and other senior critical senior programs

We were also able to win some important victories for the East Side and Manhattan. Among them:

  • $2.75 million for full-day universal pre-k programs and East Side schools
  • $2 million for city food pantries
  • $6 million to support domestic violence prevention and reproductive health care for at risk teens
  • Funding for legal aid for the indigent and eviction prevention services

For the full adopted expense budget, including individual Council Members’ discretionary items, please click here:http://council.nyc.gov/html/releases/pdfs/FY2011.Schedule.C.pdf

Thank you to everyone who contacted my office with their input throughout the budget process. Hearing from you was an invaluable part of this process. As always, please don’t hesitate to call or email with any specific questions or ideas.

Hawaiian Tropic Mango After Sun Crème Lotion Recommended by Whom You Know!

Indulge and moisturize your skin with Hawaiian Tropic's luxurious After Sun product line. These products contain the most fragrant rich, creamy formulas for your beautiful skin. Infused with nourishing ingredients such as Aloe Vera and Cocoa, Shea and Mango butters, these moisturizers are great for everyday use!  Our panel said:
For those of us who spend any amount of time out in the sun, whether with adequate sun protection, or especially not, the after-sun care is just as important as the actual suncare in helping to soothe and heal our skin.  Hawaiian Tropic's After Sun Crème Lotion is just the product to add to the lineup of sunscreen and suncare products that we have that helps us enjoy the sun in a safe fashion.  The formula, which contains a soothing combination of aloe vera, cocoa, shea and mango butter, completely pampers the skin and keeps it well-moisturized for up to 12 hours, without any greasy residues.  The crème is dispensed in a spill-proof spray can and the wonderful mango fragrance will leave a hint of the tropical islands long after you're out of the sun.

Being out in the sun for extended periods of time can tend to dry out my skin.  It tends to dry out even more after using sunscreen.  No matter how careful I am with making sure I have applied sun protection, sometimes I can miss a spot and my skin becomes itchy.  I have tried many moisturizers and none have done the trick like the Mango After Sun Creme Lotion.  My skin absorbed it quickly and felt soft for many hours afterward.  It even helped soothe a few spots I missed and were sunburned.  I had chilled my lotion first.  Since it was cold, it felt really good after being out in the sun most of the day.  The light scent was soothing as well.  This is moisturizer I've used even if I haven't been in the sun for long periods of time as well.  It just does a great job at keeping my skin feeling soft.  I love this lotion!

I love Hawaiian Tropic's After Sun lotion. The scent reminds me of a tropical beach. The smell of Mango takes center stage with this lotion. I love to tan during the warmer months and this lotion kept my skin quenched and smelling good all day and evening long. The texture of the lotion is slightly thick and not runny. I found the lotion to go on with ease and is not greasy at all. The moisturizing lotion is not just for after sun care, I have also been using it as a daily moisturizer. I enjoyed wearing this lotion on overcast days it made me feel more upbeat. This lotion instantly puts me in a good mood and makes me think I'm spending a day at the beach.  The luxurious 12 hours of moisture is excellent for my skin.

Features & Benefits:
• NEW indulgent crème form!
•
NEW delightful Island Mango scent!
• Luxurious moisture – provides 12 hour moisturization
• Exotic island botanicals
• Enriched with shea and mango butters
