I Drank The Peachy Deegan at San Pietro: Lucia Bruno, Dutifully Helping Gerardo Drink His 4th Peachy of the day although we know he will have 5!

Lucia Bruno is a total star which is why we KNOW she is drinking Star Vodka!
Thank you to all of our readers who voted for San Pietro, as we suggested many weeks ago, because all of your votes counted and they won.
As a result, and this was Mover and Shaker Gerardo Bruno's idea, not Peachy's although she thinks it is an excellent one, that if he won he would faithfully drink 5 Peachy Deegans a day.
So, you can expect to see many more pictures of this kind we suspect and if any of you readers can help out Gerardo with his 5 dailys please pay him a visit.
His wife Lucia is helping him with #4 today and yesterday was the day they won, and we have every vote of confidence that they will make it to #5.
Congratulations to San Pietro, voted #1 Italian restaurant outside of Italy by the Chamber of Commerce of Italy!  (Giuseppe and Cosimo we think Sistina and Caravaggio are equally excellent too, and we hope Gerardo will patronize you and drink The Peachy at your place!)

AUDIO-TECHNICA’S STYLE HEADPHONES, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BY WHOM YOU KNOW, MAKE LISTENING MORE FASHIONABLE – AND FUN! WHOM YOU KNOW IS PSYCHED TO KICK OFF OUR COVERAGE OF AUDIO-TECHNICA

Female music lovers, rejoice!  There is now a way to listen to your music in style, thanks to Bloom, Audi-Technica’s ultra-chick line of inner-ear headphones.   The line is specifically designed for women, and it shows in the details.  All other ear buds I’ve tried have consistently fallen out of my ears –they’re too big to fit properly. However, these fit perfectly!  They’re just a little bit smaller, but that little bit makes a huge difference in the fit, as well as the comfort level.  In addition to being the perfect size, the Bloom ear buds are adorable!  Mine are a simple, pearly white and have a lovely luster to them!  Each pair comes housed in an ultra-feminine carrying case (mine came in a green box with pretty pink flowers!), which is perfect for storing and protecting them.  Now, all of this is terrific of course, but do they deliver on sound?  You bet!  I tried them out on the noisy Manhattan subway at rush hour and heard every bit of music loud and clear.  They also work well to cancel out background noise – another plus in the perpetually loud New York City streets!  All around winners, these fashionable headphones are a perfect gift for any fashionable female on the go – whether it’s yourself or someone else!

Peachy Picks The Volstead

Everyone says Australia is the best place down under, but if you want that in Manhattan, go to The Volstead!
It literally is an underground wonder highlighted by the culinary expertise of Executive Chef Mike Boulos, above, who has been lighting this place on fire with his flair in the kitchen (figuratively!) since May 2011.  His passion is clear and his creativity is phenomenal.
He is holding Peachy's crab which she just adored.
If you thought The Volstead was just a hot night spot, think again.
It is also an extraordinary dining experience.

Sweet corn hush puppies greeted us as soon as we walked in the door.
Paired with hot pepper berry jelly and black and blue butter, these were all new flavors to Whom You Know and they highlight the creativity of Chef Mike Boulos.
Right from the start he came out and greeted us and is totally on top of his game; previously he was at Park South Hospitality's PS450.  Managers Jordan Schehr and Avi were equally attentive and hospitable.  Caitlin Hales was an outstanding server and was a great combination of Irish, English and Texas charm.

Even if you are not staying for dinner but just having a drink at the bar, you absolutely should order at least one of the bruchettas we tried, but we'd suggest all three.  First was the tomato basil bruschetta with walnut-balsamic pesto, and rosemary salt; in the middle was the smoked salmon bruschetta with whipped mascarpone, agro-dolce onions, and smoked black pepper; and at the bottom was the grilled hangar steak bruschetta with onion marmalade and horseradish cream.
All three were incredibly flavorful, toasty, and will leave you with a satisfied smile!

Eating a salad is always a great idea, and we sampled two:
the baby spinach salad with grilled red onion, crispy pancetta and crumbled blue cheese; and the arugula and beet salad with roasted beets, goat cheese, toasted walnuts, and sherry shallot vinaigrette.
Fresh and delicious, the salads were a great addition to the meal and again like previous courses, were quite innovative.

There may not be anyone crabbier than Peachy in Manhattan, and this time it's not a crabcake she's going to talk about.  The Deviled Crab Salad with spicy old bayoli and garlic toast points was super for summer, and our recommended way to start your meal at The Volstead.

We definitely suggest you dine at the mezzanine level as other areas of The Volstead may be too noisy for fine dining, though they are just right for nightlife.
For her entree, Peachy Deegan continued along her seafood theme and ordered the Market Fish Special Chatham Cod, that day's catch from North Rip Trading.
Flaky and delicious, the Cod was a fantastic fish that even seemed to sing along with the upbeat tunes in the background.  And the wine options below were simply fabulous, especially the Chablis.
So, be hip with Peachy Deegan and dine at The Volstead!

Not to be confused with the Volstead Act-which established Prohibition http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volstead_Act- The Volstead boasts a fine wine collection, which we were tremendously impressed with. We highly recommend the 2009 Chablis.
Really the only thing missing was The Peachy Deegan cocktail but perhaps that can be fixed!
But don't listen to only Peachy...her esteemed panelist adds:

As we entered the subterranean lounge known as The Volstead, I felt my cares slip away. The dimly lit, cavernous space provided a welcome respite from the chaotic summer streets above, and I found myself cheerfully bopping along to the upbeat mix of mostly ’80s and ‘90s pop. Shortly after our arrival, newly appointed executive chef Mike Boulos made his way over to the table to introduce himself and discuss the menu. Young, enthusiastic, and energetic about his trade, Mr. Boulos explained his approach to food: nothing fancy, just good, classic dishes, with his own contemporary Italian-influenced spin. He disappeared back into the kitchen to prepare some starters for us as we perused the menu, and shortly thereafter, a plate of his hush puppies appeared at our table. Classic sweet corn hush puppies, these bite-sized delights were made given a great new twist by being served with hot pepper jelly and a black and blueberry butter sauce! Next, he send out a sampler of 3 bruschettas for us to try: grilled hangar steak with caramelized onion marmalade and horseradish; smoked salmon with marscopone cheese, agro-dolce onions, and smoked black pepper, and tomato-basil with walnut-balsamic pesto. All three were terrific and inventive, but my favorite was the tomato-basil – the flavors just exploded on the tongue, proving the point that old classics executed to perfection can continue to be exciting just like the songs will be at Feinstein's August 30 when Jenna Esposito performs! The bruschetta was followed by a sampling of the salads on the menu: we were treated to the arugula and beet salad, which also featured goat cheese, walnuts, and sherry-shallot vinaigrette, as well as the baby spinach salad, which had grilled red onion and crumbled blue cheese, and was topped with a delicious slice of crispy pancetta. Both salads were exceptional and featured a wonderful variety of textures and flavors. Next, it was on to the dishes we’d actually ordered – for me, it was the truffled mac & cheese, which was out of this world! Boasting a shallot cream sauce, fontina and pecorino cheeses, garlic parmesan bread crumbs, and truffle oil, this delectable dish easily sailed into my list of my top 5 things I’ve eaten this year.

For my main course, I opted for the Steak Frites, which was also executed extremely well. My steak was perfectly cooked, and it was served with horseradish cream and pickled onions, along with the requisite fries. The kick from the horseradish cream and the tang of the pickled onions were the perfect complements to the tender steak, and I was thoroughly satisfied with my selection. For dessert, we were sent out chocolate covered strawberries, along with cookies and milk. Surprisingly, these are the only two dessert options on the menu, but they were both very tasty and just sweet enough without being over the top. Throughout the meal, we sipped on two outstanding wines, which are sadly no longer on the wine list at The Volstead, but which the manager graciously retrieved from the cellar for us to sample. The first was a delicious, fruity Chablis – a perfect summer wine. And the second was a Chilean Gewurtztraminer, which was delightfully sweet, crisp and refreshing. Excellent service was provided throughout by our server Caitlin, along with Chef Boulos and managers Avi and Jordan. Overall, we had an outstanding experience, and would highly recommend The Volstead anyone looking for a fun, lively atmosphere with stellar food and a friendly staff!

Peachy Picks Pascalou

You know how Peachy Deegan loves to walk down Madison Avenue and check out all of the windows in our column New Window...well guess what she also likes to check out?
Fabulous restaurants, of course!
And now that we are in the eighties in the number of reviews we've done in Peachy's Picks, our standards keep getting higher and higher and we are looking for even better cuisine and an even better story.
We found it at Pascalou.
They have one of the best stories we have ever heard.
Pascal was a chef at a nearby restaurant and Lottie Lou owned a store in the current location of Pascalou; they fell in love and in 1996 Pascalou began and her store turned into a restaurant, Pascal left the other restaurant and they got married and he became the chef of Pascalou and everyone on the Upper East side ate there and lived happily ever after.  And anyone that did not live on the Upper East side just wished they did and they travel for miles to eat there.
And here is what they ate:
Peachy Deegan began with the Scottish Smoked Salmon Platter over arugula will dill and capers and it was the perfect start to a hot summer night in the heatwave of Manhattan.  Beautifully arranged as well, this starter was fresh and succulent and was definitely above the standard salmon fare in Manhattan restaurants.  Peachy picked the salmon, and Chef Pascal had some ideas of other dishes he wanted us to try while we visited Pascalou.
Here is Chef Pascal's hit parade he suggested, emphasis on the word HIT:
After Peachy Deegan had the salmon, next came the oyster ceviche, which was creatively adorned with salsa. They also are a big summer hit and if you like oysters, you will love these.  It was apparent from the start that not only the food was smashing, but also the host was, Martin, who could not have been more entertaining with his banter right down to some fun cockney.
Pascalou was first featured in Tasty Tidbits:
http://www.whomyouknow.com/2011/07/tasty-tidbits-pascalou.html
And it has earned its spot in Peachy's Picks; it is one of our favorites.
We know that Fois Gras is an uberpopular item with most of the world, but normally Peachy is not a huge fan.  However, this Fois Gras that was pan seared with sweet and sour orange was mouthwatering and every tender piece melted in Peachy's mouth.  That is the sign of an excellent chef: he makes you like what you thought you didn't. Above is a sample serving but if you order the whole dish it looks like this:
Below is the full-size portion of the Bouillabasse, and you know we ate the above smaller portion because for Peachy it's another day, another cocktail dress to fit into.
Our panel for the most part, though you know panelists are rotated, absolutely loves seafood and this panel in particular does.  Next on the Chef Pascal hit parade was the Bouillabasse special with scallops, shrimp, mussels, ocean seabass, sole and manilla clams in a saffron broth.
Absolutely decadent, the Bouillabasse even in this heat wave is highly desirable and one of the best dishes on this menu.  By now we were convinced we wanted to listen to Chef Pascal's suggestions; some Chefs seem to want certain dishes "marketed" and we are happy to try them, but as you know we only write about them if we are impressed.
Normally Peachy Deegan is not one to order duck, however, like the Fois Gras, Chef Pascal is so excellent the dishes you would turn down at lesser places you will kill for at Pascalou.
We have never had a better duck and the tender flavor and gorgeous presentation absolutely knocked us out.  And here is the full-size duck:
And what did Peachy Deegan order for an entree?
The Fresh Sea Scallops Provencal with shaved braised fennel, tomatoes, basil, and jumbo asparagus:
The presentation was beautiful.
The asparagus was crispy and fresh.
The scallops were seared to perfection.
The total effect was DELICIOUS and exquisite for summer.
What more can we say-you ought to make your reservation!
The grand finale?
Dessert of course.
Avid readers know that Peachy first tried Grand Marnier souffle at La Grenouille, and it was as excellent as you would imagine.  She was almost afraid to order it anywhere else.
Then she had it again recently at Madison Bistro, and it was equally impressive and every bit as fabulous as La Grenouille.  So now that she is on a roll with this dessert, she had to try it at Pascalou.  And it was even better here because they added a side of cream and ice cream relaxing in Grand Marnier which you can add to the souffle and that creativity and thought that enhances the souffle is the kind of thing that impresses us.  With a cocktail named after her, you know Peachy is usually the type to sip on one or some wine during dinner but it was just too hot to do this this night so that is why we are not talking about the wine selection, etc.
Don't listen to just Peachy!
Our esteemed panelist adds:
Our dining experience at Pascalou was absolutely phenomenal from the moment we walked in the door and were warmly greeted by Martin, who regaled us all evening with his upbeat English accent and pure wit in addition to his knowledge of French Cuisine.  The cuisine was outstanding, and course after course we were continually impressed with the high level of presentation, the talents of the Chef cooking everything to perfection, and the flavor and consistent top quality of every item.  I began with the Black-Forest Ham and Gruyere Cheese Souffle with field greens, shown below and above respectively.
Cooked to perfection with an expert crust, the souffle melted in my mouth and I enjoyed the flavor of every bite.  The cheese was not overpowering and was just right.  The field greens nicely balanced out the consistency of the souffle and they were a super combination.  Among the other starters that I thought were standout were the Trio of Sauteed Mushrooms and the Smoked Salmon that Peachy ordered-and the dill that came with it was so fresh and a great complement to the fish.  Though normally I would not be one to eat duck, I was impressed tremendously with the duck at Pascalou.
It was by far the best duck I've ever had.  Outside, it was crisp and inside it was moist and flavorful.  My favorite of the night, other than dessert which we will come to, was the Bouillabaise: scallops, shrimp, mussels, ocean seabass, sole and manilla clams in a saffron broth will delight every seafood lover among us and it was a symphony of summer flavor that will leave you wanting to return for more!
As an entree, I ordered the Grilled Rib Eye Steak (90% of fat removed) and it was seared splendidly, "bourbon au poivre" with mashed potatoes and vegetables.  The genius of Chef Pascal was highlighted the most in the Grand Marnier Souffle, which I am still dreaming about.  The most amazing souffle I've ever had, this delightful creation was made even better by being served with ice cream soaking in Grand Marnier on the side which you can add to the souffle.  Overall, I am highly impressed with the quality of every aspect of Pascalou and I can't wait to return!

Peachy Picks Pascalou!
Pascalou is Highly Recommended by Whom You Know.
