If you thought tulips were just for the Netherlands, think again because one of the hottest new restaurants in New York has them at every table: Bread and Tulips.  Named after the idea of a wholesome meal (bread) and atmosphere (tulips), Bread and Tulips exudes a rustic contemporary atmosphere that is uncommon and quite welcome.

Bread and Tulips was first featured in Tasty Tidbits:
and we are pleased to announce it has joined the ranks of Peachy's Picks.
Its fantastic local Italian-inspired cuisine, its simplistic understated classy style and the dedication of the ownership have earned Bread and Tulips a spot in Peachy's Picks.

Above you'll see we began our experience here with a semolina gnocci with an olive on top presented to us by owner Riccardo Dardha, who was the consummate professional all evening.  Add in waiter Paul Terrenbach and you have a winning team of service.
Peachy sipped on a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon Noble Tree 2009 and the wine experience was heightened by the Swedish Nordaq water they use which is specifically designed to leaver minerals in the water thus making it an ideal companion for all wine.  All wine is under $100-totally reasonable.
To start, Peachy Deegan had the sea scallops with white bean puree and chorizo.
Served in a delicate arrangement, this was a starter that tasted as smashing as it looked.  The cubes of chorizo were just enough to add flavor without being overwhelming.
You know that Peachy liked the pizza here - see what she said on New Year's Eve.
You know all good things come from drinking Star Vodka by now!
This is the Black Pepper Coppa: roasted peppers, onions, olives, ricotta and lemon thyme.
We also sampled the Chicken Liver crostini served with sicilian pistachio and pickled pearl onion.  If you are a fan of Chicken Liver, this is simply divine.
You know Peachy Deegan is an advocate of practically every form of seafood, and so she tried the Black Tagliatelle with rock shrimp, oven roasted cherry tomatoes, Italian parsley and bread crumbs.  Each component was in brilliant proportion to the others and it made for a spectacular symphony of flavor.  Do not miss out on the meatballs:
And did you know that they braise their pork shoulder for 24 hours?
Braised Berkshire Pork Shoulder in parsnip puree is joined by kale, a farm quail egg and braising jus.  A pure winter comfort, this dish you will love as well.
Dessert is mouthwatering and the Chocolate and Hazelnut mousse with espresso gelato is a great finale.
Our esteemed panel comments:
If you are looking for a fine dining cuisine with a little less formal atmosphere, Bread & Tulips is your place. Not only is the name intriguing but the experience is as well. Co-owner, Riccardo Dardha, wanted to create a “rustic-contemporary” ambiance for guests. Every aspect of this restaurant is unique. The tables are hand crafted, out of Pennsylvania walnut wood, the cheeses are imported from Italy and the menu changes seasonally. Bread & Tulips is a hidden treasure tucked away on the corner of 26th avenue and Park. Riccardo redefined hospitality and he did it well.  Nordaq fresh was served when we were seated. This is rumored to be the highest quality bottled water in the world because the impurities are filtered out and all of the minerals remain. This was demonstrated by our server Paul by having us participate in a taste test including wine, filtered water and Nordaq fresh and I must say this was without a doubt the best water I have ever tasted.

My dinner began with the spice crusted sweet breads which were very delicious and beautifully presented. This was the perfect sized appetizer, filling, but still left plenty of room for my meal. My dinner entrée was the black sea bass served with faro, turnips, and wild mushroom.

The sea bass was cooked to perfection. Bread & Tulips provided such amazing hospitality; we were able to try nearly half the menu! I am generally not a picky eater but I did have reservations about some items on the menu, such as chicken liver and braised lamb. Not only did I enjoy it at the table but I ended up taking some home. Thanks to Bread & Tulips I cannot wait to visit again. Ambiance-check, impeccable service-check, amazing food-check, my new favorite restaurant-check!

A great experience from the beginning. I like places that are easy on the eyes and this place uses a great combination of subtle colors, softened lighting and rustic textures (lots of brick and wood). Unlike most NYC restaurants, the tables are not right next to each other which creates a great sense of comfort. The music was at the “cool” volume level which made it easy to converse. The tables and booths themselves have a rounded shape, symbolic of the owner’s desire to make the patron feel welcome, like they are being “hugged”. I found the pizza really good as it was thin and not too “doughey’.

The grilled octopus appetizer was prepared well, not too chewy.

I also liked the rib-eye (not a large portion) but the pappardelle with lamb was incredible.

The pinot grigio was excellent. The pear sorbet was a bit “icey”. I found the owner Ricardo a humble, gracious host and a real gentleman who really thinks about the whole experience, not just the food. He is totally focused on his business and it’s all about the customer. A great find in the Flatiron District and I’ll definitely be going back. A great place for a date or a group of people.
