We are always looking for a hot spot to see the amazing Boston College Eagles triumph over the entire world of NCAA opponents in any competitive endeavor requiring action (best of luck to the hockey team in the Frozen Four today; you know Peachy is a former statistician  (
, and though The East End is favored by the Syracuse crowd and also Manhattan college, at the end of the day everyone is Irish (or just wished they were) and is looking for great Irish-American food and let's face it, it's not easy to find in Manhattan or else we would be writing on it a lot more often.   You would think Peachy Deegan was Italian from the restaurant reviews!
The East End was featured first in Terrific Takeout:
& it graduated to Tasty Tidbits:
We are pleased to announce it has joined the ranks of Peachy's Picks.
The East End started in 2007 and is still going strong we are pleased to say.  Their menu is quite extensive for a place that is known to be a bar.
The cheerful atmosphere, the solid cuisine that will impress you for bar food, and the genuine care exuded by Kenny the owner will leave you returning to The East End time and time again.
Whom You Know began with The East End Sampler: chicken fingers, potato skins, wings and mozzarella sticks.  You all should know they are very serious about their wings and even have been in wings festivals and competitions highlighted among the bar food elite in Manhattan in past years.  We have not been in the loop of that competition but will find out more as long as Kenny tells us!   The mozzarella sticks and potato skins were Peachy's favorite of this fab four.
Their salads are stellar as well as you can see.
Peachy opted for the Cobb Salad which definitely could be a meal on its own.  Fresh avocado, grilled chicken, egg, bacon, tomato and crumbled blue cheese form a refreshing combination of healthiness that we all should be aiming for, and they were smart to put the dressing on the side.
The crowd at The East End we surmise could get quite lively during non-dining hours but we visited it at a relatively early hour and had quite a peaceful dinner.  At 8pm weekdays the dining crowd is there and we are pleased to say it is a much more polished crowd than some other bar/restaurants we've considered.
For her entree Peachy ordered a specialty unique to The East End: The East End Sauteed Chicken.  It was flavorful and moist which is key in a chicken dish.  Mushrooms and roasted garlic joined the party and the mixed herb cream sauce was delightful.  You can see this clearly is not your standard bar food which obviously is a great thing!  The broccoli aside was crisp and nicely presented.  Peachy Deegan sipped on a Magner's which is on tap and is perfect for spring!  You know that is fantastic cider from Ireland.
Our esteemed panelist adds:
In a city full of fabulous restaurants and terrific sports bars, how do you stand out? By being a top-notch sports bar with extremely high-quality food, that’s how – and that’s exactly what East End Bar does! This friendly neighborhood spot in the heart of the Upper East Side boasts 10 42” HD TVs, plenty of sports memorabilia, and one of the most extensive menus I’ve ever seen at a sports bar! Specializing in Irish-American food, the menu offers classic bar fare like wings (available in 14 different flavors!), nachos, popcorn shrimp, and jalapeno poppers, in addition to classic Irish dishes. We arrived early, before the usual evening rush, and were seated in a quiet booth across from the bar, where we were able to watch the first baseball game of the season on a few different screens! To start, we decided to share the East End Sampler, which is an excellent combination platter featuring some of East End’s most popular appetizers. It was a great introduction to a number of the appetizers, including wings, mozzarella sticks, potato skins, and chicken fingers. They were all delicious and were a great kickoff to the evening. I chose to sip on Smithwick’s Superior Irish Ale with my meal, which was the perfect complement to the savory fare.
For my salad, I chose the Goat Cheese Salad, which was so large, it could have been a meal in itself! And it was incredibly tasty, too, with tomato, onions, cucumber, walnuts, and cranberries served over mesclun greens and topped with a raspberry vinaigrette – just a terrific combination of flavors and textures!
For my main course, I just had to try the Dublin Style Fish & Chips – and I was sure glad I did! The fish was tender and delicious, and the crust was perfectly light and flaky. The chips were expertly prepared, and I was so happy that our waitress offered malt vinegar with them – my Irish granny would definitely approve! Again, the portion size was extremely generous – so, happily, I have a yummy lunch to look forward to today! Overall, it was an excellent dining experience – casual and relaxed, but with a great, homey atmosphere and delectable dishes. The next time I want to watch a big game, I know where I’m headed!
