Today Whom You Know kicks off our READ THIS summer reading suggestions with GYPPED, by Carol Higgins Clark.  This is the first book we've read by this author, although we have read her mom a few times.  And she's not getting a rave review just because we once knew her cousin in County Limerick when Peachy lived in Cork.  She is also not getting a rave review since her mom mentions our pal Jimmy Neary in every book.  Carol is receiving a rave review because she did it the old fashioned way (remember the Salomon Smith Barney commercials before Citigroup bought them out...!): she earned it.

Gypped draws you in quite quickly as you find yourself on the West Coast with Regan Reilly, the protagonist.  Ooooh we do love how the protagonist is Irish that makes so much sense to us.  With a sharp eye and a stunning sensibility, Regan has an adventure-filled few days there reuniting with an old friend, Zelda, who just happened to be awarded a lovely sum via a will of a deceased friend of hers.  Poor Zelda did not study finance at Boston College or work on Wall Street so she does not make the decisions she ought to, and that is another whole story!  It gets her in mountains of trouble...learn how to manage your own money, everyone!

Gypped is just as much about the challenges Zelda faces as it is about the ones Regan is put up against.  What could be scarier than your dad marrying someone not up to snuff in a shotgun wedding?  And is Norman really her friend or is he in it just for the money?

The character development in Gypped is a strong point of the book but the most winning aspect of it all is its ability to keep you interested and not be able to put it down.  It is a quick read if you are a speedy reader, and also a highly enjoyable one.

Whom You Know highly recommends Gypped!  It is just perfect for the beach but remember to wear SPF especially if you are Irish!

Carol Higgins Clark’s fourteen previous mysteries featuring PI Regan Reilly were immediate bestsellers. Over 1 million copies of her books are in print, and she speaks regularly to sold-out crowds. Her books have received rave reviews from publications ranging from the New York Times, to USA Today, to the Daily Beast.

Clark’s fifteenth Regan Reilly novel, GYPPED (Scribner; On-sale April 3, 2012), does not disappoint. Private Investigator Regan Reilly, in LA while husband Jack is on business, reconnects with into her old friend, Zelda, now a life coach, a woman she’d become friendly with seven years prior at a television studio in Burbank, when they were waiting to appear on the game show Puzzling Words. They haven’t seen each other since. Zelda recently inherited eight million dollars and, after falling ill, fears that someone might be out to get her. Has Zelda’s windfall put her in danger? Regan is determined to find out, not knowing she’s a target herself!

Carol Higgins Clark is known for creating, quirky, likeable characters. Some of the people you’ll meet in GYPPED are:

· Norman: Zelda’s thirty-three year old neighbor and personal assistant. He could kick himself for not being nicer to the elderly woman down the hall who left an eight million dollar inheritance to Zelda. If only he had that kind of money, he could quit his job and pursue his real passion: singing. For now, he will have to keep his secret passion from Zelda, even if it means lying and sneaking off to private lessons and karaoke bars! How far will Norman go to realize his dreams?

· Bobby Jo: After Zelda’s mother passed away four years ago, her father had been lonely. Zelda had encouraged him to start dating again, but he’d always resisted, until he met Bobby Jo, an attractive, sturdy woman in her mid-sixties, at a gas station. Now, less than four months later, Zelda’s father and Bobby Jo eloped to Vegas, much to Zelda’s surprise. Something about their marriage feels wrong to Zelda. Is she being unfair to Bobby Jo, or are her suspicions about her right on target?

· Rich: Zelda’s trusted financial advisor. He’s been working hard in the past few months, managing Zelda’s windfall. After Zelda notices some suspicious behavior from Rich, she asks Regan to investigate. What will Regan turn up about Rich and his company, Willowwood Management?

· Petunia and Clarence: Out in public, this twosome gives the impression of being your average middle-aged couple. Clarence drives a truck and Petunia is a manicurist. Behind closed doors, though, they are not what they seem. After raising their children in a San Diego suburb, they moved north (away from their nosy neighbors) where Petunia rents a PO Box and puts her money-making schemes in motion.

Following on the heels of Carol Higgins Clark’s most recent New York Times bestseller, Mobbed (2011), which The Washington Times called “a fun, delightful and entertaining tale enhanced by quirky, endearing characters,” GYPPED is an entertaining read, sure to please readers of all ages.
