Maine Woolens, affordable luxury and tradition.

If you haven't heard, the latest breaking news is that Will & Kate are expecting, as in THE Will and Kate, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.  As you know we just loved A Salt & Battery, so we had to get back to the land of Nicky Perry to see what Tea and Sympathy is all about!  Tea & Sympathy was first featured in Tasty Tidbits:
and we are pleased to announce it has entered into Peachy's Picks!  If you are after a nostalgic English meal, this is the place to go.  Especially now since it it's all decorated for Christmas!
Check out the cracker:

Every aspect of Tea and Sympathy exudes English charm and detail, right down to the 108 Greenwich Street address on this house:
But THIS is the house you'll want to enter:
Looking at everything fantastic on the walls is just as enticing as eating the food!
You know we have always been Anglophiles and it shows in nearly every column; Mover and Shaker India Hicks's grandfather was the last Viceroy of India hence her name, and Mover and Shaker Geoffrey Bradfield's paternal grandfather was magistrate of his district in South Africa, so certainly we don't limit ourselves to the mother country only-also colonies!

And when they say TEA, you can be assured of quality and authenticity, right down to the tea memorabilia:
Certainly anything with the name Absolutely Fabulous would be ordered by Peachy Deegan at a place like this as she loves the show....Mixed Greens, Chicken, Hard-Boiled Egg, Bacon and Tomatoes combine to form a salad that is fresh and substantial!  You won't find Eddy and Patsy ordering champagne here however, they will BYOB and we'd advise you to do the same.

One of our readers asked about tea sandwiches-and we understand they are offered at lunch where  you can choose three fillings and get three savory ones if you wish to only have savory and not sweet-as you specifically wish.  We went for dinner though and Peachy Deegan ordered the Tweed Kettle Pie: Fresh Salmon and Cod in a parsley sauce with potato topping.  It absolutely hit the spot on a chilly fall night in Manhattan and we liked the fish component as usually we associate such pies with meat.  Carole Fan, who is authentically English and came to America in 1987, was a delight to work with and she's been at Tea and Sympathy since the 90's.

If you are asked if you want custard with any of your dessert options, be advised that the correct answer from you should be a resounding YES please!   Peachy tried the Rhubarb crumble and it was delicately devoured in no time-the best part of the meal!

Our esteemed panelist adds:
For Anglophiles nostalgic for the cozy experience of a Sussex countryside tea house, New York's Tea + Sympathy is just the spot. Tucked into the middle of the West Village block of Greenwich Street between 12th + 13th streets Tea + Symphathy provides a miniature sanctuary of purely English good cheer and whimsy.

The walls decorated with charming teapots of varying shapes, sizes and pattern, cartoons, caricatures, posters, vintage sheet music and other English eponymous ephemera border a roomfull of tables covered with pink rose oil clothes reminiscent of a nursery kitchen.

For those wishing to indulge their sweet tooth I recommend skipping directly to the dessert course and ordering the toffee sticky pudding. It is a dream and guaranteed to provide an instant mood of pure happiness.

If looking for a less sugary start the beet salad is colorful and tangy in flavor and the lamb shepherd's pie entree is a hearty choice particularly on a cold New York night.

If your sweet tooth also requires a glass of wine Marley's liquor store a block away provides endless choices to carry back to Tea + Sympathy whose BYOB policy provides the perfect opportunity to raid your own wine cellar or take advantage of Marley's encyclopedic wine knowledge.
