Ever since the release of The Preppy Handbook, Mover and Shaker Carol Wallace has wowed us with her literary command including To Marry An English Lord, which we reviewed last year and was the genesis for our beloved Downton Abbey so says Julian Fellowes himself.  In Leaving Van Gogh, Wallace demonstrates her clearcut versatility as an author, now mastering historical fiction.  Any lover of art with a special inquisitiveness in regards to artists themselves and their thoughts is going to be captivated by Leaving Van Gogh, who himself was immoderately gifted.  "In Auvers we have always been accustomed to painters with their rucksacks and collapsible easels and stools, often settled where you least expect them, at a turn in the road or in the hollow of a meadow.  I like to think that, in painting our landscapes, they become part of it.  But even from behind, Vincent's shambling gait, his battered boots, and his coarse straw hat made him an unusual and unmistakable figure in Auvers."  (p. 36)  Told from the perspective of a Doctor that knew Van Gogh, Leaving Van Gogh contains stunning descriptions of the paintings themselves and the psychology of the man behind them: it was vital to his health that he continued to work.  Van Gogh's exquisite vision and acute perception with sight produced extraordinary works obviously, but the incalculable costs associated with this in relation to his mental health.  It's a timely read as well since mental health and guns are sadly so newsworthy today.  There's a lot of feeling in this book and it would be ideal for a book group that likes to discuss.  With great genius comes great trouble...higher highs and lower lows spell the life of Van Gogh.

During the summer of 1890, Vincent Van Gogh shot himself in the chest with a revolver. He died two days later, at the age of 37, largely unknown despite having completed more than 2,000 works of art that would later go on to become some of the most important and valued in the world.

In her novel LEAVING VAN GOGH (Spiegel & Grau; On Sale April 19, 2011), Carol Wallace brilliantly navigates the mysteries surrounding Van Gogh’s death. Told from an utterly unique perspective, Wallace imagines that final summer of the artist’s life from the viewpoint of Dr. Gachet, Van Gogh’s personal physician who specialized in mental illness and was a great lover of the arts.

Based on primary historical documents, including Van Gogh’s prolific correspondence with his brother Theo, LEAVING VAN GOGH is a fascinating portrait of a legendary artist whose mind, plagued by demons, is an irresistible puzzle, posing the most potentially rewarding challenge of Dr. Gachet’s career.
