Tasty Tidbits: Umberto's Clam House

Their website tells us:

THE LEGEND OF MULBERRY STREET RETURNS

Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid...
It's Not Just For Tourists...

In 1970, 35-year-old Umberto Ianniello strolled around New york City's Little Italy and realized there were only a couple of seafood restaurants in the entire neighborhood. Named after the last Prince of Italy, Umberto kept the idea to himself until he spoke to his parents about his idea of opening a restaurant! His parents encouraged Umberto to realize his dream, and in 1972, Umberto Ianniello opened his first restaurant, Umberto's Clam House on Mulberry Street in New York City.

With an unpretentious atmosphere, and an enduring concern for freshness Umberto worked tirelessly to achieve unprecedented quality and uniqueness at his restaurant. This came to fruition in their open kitchen (which became part of Umbertos alluring ambiance) and helped make Umbertos Clam House an overnight success!

For over 40 years, Umbertos Clam House has served Little Italy and has established itself as an eating institution. Umbertos is a New York City landmark stop for Manhattanites, tourists, and celebrities.

In 2005, Mr. Ianniello passed his legacy to his son Robert Ianiello Jr. who has been working hard to protect the famous eatery. Robert Jr. says, "My father started Umbertos in the early 70's and helped revitalize and reinvent Little Italy. Umbertos Clam House quickly became a haven for people to enjoy great food while absorbing provocative NYC atmosphere. I'm proud to carry on my family's tradition of flavorful innovative Italian style cooking with a modern flair."

Our new menu features our legendary Hot Red Clam Sauce which is simmered to perfection for hours just as it was in 1972. Umbertos also offers many new exciting dishes such as: Short Rib Ragu Over Penne, Spiedini a la Romano and more.

Most recently, Umbertos catered the star studded Hoboken Internatioinal Film Festival in early June, Chris Hemsworth, star of the hit action movie Thor graced their tables and Umbertos and USO partnered to serve a luxurious luncheon to injured soldies of war.

Actors, sports figures, politicans, musicians and celebrities all flock to Umbertos! From acting legends Robert DeNiro and Michael Douglas to David Chase, creator of the hit TV series The Sopranos to James Gandolfini and Edie Falco, stars of the The Sopranos... Umbertos is truly a New York City Legend!

The Sopranos featured Umbertos Clam House numerous times and often filmed special segments at the restaurant. Tony Soprano is known for repeating this famous line throughout the series... "Let's hit Umbertos for some scungilli and calamari.

As of Memorial Day, 2011... New York's Little Italy is opening up it's streets! The renowned Little Italy Summer Mall kicks in at 5:30PM and gives restaurants room to expand as well.

Umbertos is proud to announce their new Late night dining experience and will serve an array of comfort foods such as Eggs Benedict, Omelettes made to order, cheeseburgers and fries, BLT'S, Chicken cutlet sandwiches and more.
