Soccer, or football as it's known outside the USA, is finally catching on in America in one big way, and some of us started playing as kids. The World Cup has taken Manhattan by storm, and you know if we want to go out and see a game there's got to be great cuisine involved.  We did some due diligence before hand and Peachy's crystal ball said that the USA would play Germany, so we tried out Bierhaus!  Open since 2011 and owned by Paul O'Connor (operating partner) from County Carlow, Tom Ryan and James Hendrick (both American), Bierhaus showed us in the one time we visited that they are a) quintessentially German right down to the beer-you can't order Guinness as they serve only German beers, b) a fantastically fun crowd to see a game, c) have a beautiful skylight-we love great lighting have you seen Chandelier Peachy and d) have proved once again that no other culture can do hospitality as well as the Irish, even when they are celebrating another culture.  Peachy can say that since she is both German and Irish biologically speaking.  The three partners travel to Germany every year since 2008 (see, they researched it for 3 years before opening) and attend Octoberfest; they are quite serious about their German accuracy as far as authentic goes.   Let your stomach explore their travels...
As an appetizer we tried the Smoked Trout Fillet, which was refreshing and enticing.  Two strips of Smoked Trout served cold were the star of the show, and the lightly dressed cucumber salad had a lovely crunch.  Creamed horseradish accentuated the fish and lemon and tomatoes teamed up for some nice nutrition and color.
We can't ever remember featuring potato pancakes in any dining review, but when you go to Bierhaus you absolutely must try them.  This is not a run-of-the-mill selection-it's served up a notch with the quality apple horseradish sauce which lords over boring plain apple sauces of inferior venues.  The pancakes themselves have a potato and onion mix which is also superior and they boast the ultimate in crispness.  You have to eat a pancake after every American goal.  And then sip your beer, pinkie out.
Another item that's nice for summer is the Pear Endive Salad, and if you're looking for the lighter side of German cuisine, you should sign up for this.  Arranged beautifully, the Pear Endive Salad is composed of sliced winter pears, endive, walnuts and blue cheese, served with a sweet pear dressing.
The piece de resistance in our opinion is the Roasted Hendl.  Click on the link to add to your vocabulary; we didn't know what a Hendl was either, however it's the Austro/Bavarian word for chicken.  Herb roasted half chicken with vegetables and herbs is roasted to perfection at Bierhaus and is a generous size.  Every bite of the chicken was rich and juicy, and although many restaurants have monotonous chicken, the spices involved in addition to that homemade spatzle prove that this chicken is one of the best around; don't let the casual decor fool you.
Bierhaus is absolutely Terrific Takeout!  It's a fantastic place to see the World Cup as well.
