Instantly glamorous and profoundly tragic, The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe is absolutely enthralling over two nights upcoming exclusively on Lifetime.  The miniseries captures her style, vulnerability and unveils the sad story of her reality.  Kelli Garner is fantastic as Marilyn and has her exactly as we'd imagine Marilyn to be right down to the breathy voice, and Susan Sarandon (we do recommend sipping Star while watching-we did) is a driving force of this movie's success in playing Marilyn's nutty mother.  Their on-screen paranoia fuels stress and conflict that shines some light on mental health issues including institutionalization for both of them, and we like the early beach scene with the ice cream cones the best.

Aunt Grace, who stands in as Marilyn's mother, is one of our favorite characters as she plays a formative role in Marilyn's life, bringing her to tinseltown as a child and showing her the famous hand and footprints.   Grace's reliability and positive force is a beacon of light in this eeyore-colored drama, and we'd like to think Marilyn's two marriages were high points as well, however, we are left wondering what her life would have been like had she never married.   We think it would have been a lot better!  Both husbands had little appreciation for her career and what it did for her as a person.  One of the saddest moments was when Grace became sick.

Like Grace of Monaco, which we also recommended, Marilyn is faced with the problem of balancing career and marriage, and the real tragedy is how men then did not have the same issue.   We do believe from this movie that Joe DiMaggio was the one for Marilyn and their love was true (reason to watch!) however it was easy for him.  He had retired on top, and then he met her.  She was still working on getting to the top.  Marilyn's thoughts on the difference between being a wife and a girlfriend are highly interesting.  This movie is not a sales pitch for Arthur Miller and we found him detestable, right down to his journal entry.

Marilyn just wanted to be loved underneath the glitter.  The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe reveals an overall idea of human worth, and the value of people.  All that glistens is not gold, and it's time to pull back the curtain and watch the mystery unveiled by Lifetime.
Kelli Garner (The Aviator, Pan Am) plays the legendary star Marilyn Monroe in Lifetime’s four-hour event The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe, premieringSaturday, May 30, and Sunday, May 31, at 8pm ET/PT. The miniseries, which uncovers many closely-guarded secrets the blonde bombshell kept from the public, also stars Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking, The Last of Robin Hood) as Marilyn’s biggest secret of all, her mother Gladys, long institutionalized for mental illness. Academy Award and Golden Globe nominee Emily Watson (Hilary and Jackie) and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Texas Rising, Magic City) also headline the cast while Sarandon’s daughter Eva Amurri Martino (Californication) plays Gladys in her youth. Watson portrays Grace McKee, Marilyn’s childhood guardian.

Based on J. Randy Taraborrelli’s New York Times bestseller of the same name, The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe begins with a portrait of a young Norma Jeane Mortenson as she battles a lonely and loveless existence with an absent mother. Despite the odds, Norma Jeane blossoms into a funny, smart and ambitious woman and soon reinvents herself to become the symbol of an era. She revels in stardom, yet remains a fragile artist, desperate for the approval and protection of men. The outside world never truly sees or understands the real Marilyn, a woman so different from her public persona. As her fame grows, all three of her marriages crumble beneath her quite publicly, including her relationships with Joe DiMaggio (Morgan) and Arthur Miller. Ultimately, Marilyn could never control her inner demons and the onslaught of mental illness inherited from her mother, Gladys (Sarandon) – a woman she loves, hates and wants desperately to save. Although the studio told the world that Marilyn's mother was dead, it is the great secret of Marilyn’s life that Gladys remained a vital and troubling part of her world. As Marilyn cares for her mother, her obsession with President John F. Kennedy drives her over the edge and, ultimately, into an insane asylum. Still, as Marilyn Monroe soldiers on, she gives the performance of her life, successfully hiding her darkest secrets from the world.

Produced by Asylum Entertainment, The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe is executive produced by Jonathan Koch and Steve Michaels (The Kennedys), Keri Selig (The Stepford Wives) of Intuition Productions, and Stephen Kronish (24), who wrote the screenplay. The miniseries is directed by Laurie Collyer (Sherrybaby).
