Though Dwayne Johnson is golden box-office success with film revenues grossing in excess of $2 billion worldwide, casting him in a movie alone is not enough to sell us on it.  We are looking for a strong script, thorough plot and dynamic cinematography.  San Andreas boasts all these components we seek, so if you are a fan of The Rock, we believe that's only a bonus for you!
Dwayne Johnson stars as Ray, a search and rescue helicopter pilot with superhuman survival skills and extraordinary capability for rescuing others.  You'll be captivated from the moment the movie starts, and be entirely hooked from the beginning.  You'll also be glad to be comfortable in your theater seat, knowing none of this is happening to you although you enjoy every moment of this thriller's action.  Definitely see it in 3D-it's worth the money.
It's not all action-San Andreas has a strong storyline behind it that is not complex but heartfelt.  Themes include divorce, children growing up and having your parents dating... (is it only in the movies that it proves to be a bad idea??!?)  Ioan Gruffudd as Daniel absolutely made our blood boil; he has the right kind of evil about him; he reminded us of Carl Bruner in Ghost (fabulously played by Tony-nominated Mover and Shaker Bryce Pinkham on Broadway)-so Daniel was especially well-cast.  We were happy with all casting and felt each actor solidly played their role.
Ray is the epitome of cool, calm and collected in a disaster, and we'd take him on any day for protection!  If you personally lived through 9/11 here that day, you may also feel that there is something oddly comforting during the entire San Andreas knowing the chaos and destruction is just a natural disaster and not created by humans.
We won't pretend to be a survival skills expert, but we think we saw a lot of good ideas here.  One is to always have a landline...
In terms of cinematography, the visuals are absolutely captivating and we were constantly holding our breath and sitting up in our seat a little bit straighter.  Creativity is at its best and every form of transportation we can think of was used here if you also like things that go!  Most of all, this is a uniting movie for everyone.  We think all backgrounds and cultures and ages will love San Andreas.  It brings us back to the magic of movies and why we love entertainment.  San Andreas is a story about humanity.  Ethereal moments were key and the score was total brilliance, complete with correct crescendos and decrescendos.  Sia is an artist included.
A modern classic, we believe San Andreas will not only be enjoyed this weekend, but also for years into the future as its story has staying power and its execution is phenomenal.
Did we tell you everyone's going to want to be Blake now?  The best newcomer to this movie is not one person - it's a team of brothers that every Downton Abbey enthusiast will tap into: Hugo Johnstone-Burt as Ben and Art Parkinson as Ollie: they play brothers and were the best part of the cast.  You will know Art as Rickon Stark from Game of Thrones.
Follow Art on Twitter here: https://twitter.com/art_parkinson
Follow Hugo on Twitter here: https://twitter.com/hugokjb
(After this weekend we predict their followers to go way up.)
And by the way, neither are English-Hugo is Australian and Art is Irish (up Donegal.  Art we hope you are reading our Belleek coverage!) and most Americans will not be able to tell the difference we think...Hugo we have two Australian restaurant recommendations for you in Manhattan (one published so far).
How will it end?  See for yourself, starting tomorow!
San Andreas is Highly Recommended by Whom You Know.

After the infamous San Andreas Fault gives, triggering a magnitude 9-plus earthquake in California, a search and rescue helicopter pilot (Dwayne Johnson) and his estranged wife (Carla Gugino) make their way together from Los Angeles to San Francisco to save their only daughter.

But their treacherous journey north is only the beginning. And when they think the worst may be over…it’s just getting started.

The screenplay is by Carlton Cuse, story by Andre Fabrizio & Jeremy Passmore. Richard Brener, Samuel J. Brown, Michael Disco, Toby Emmerich, Rob Cowan, Tripp Vinson and Bruce Berman served as executive producers.

The creative filmmaking team includes director of photography Steve Yedlin (“Looper”), production designer Barry Chusid (“The Day After Tomorrow”), editor Bob Ducsay (“Godzilla”), costume designer Wendy Chuck (“Twilight”), VFX producer Randall Starr (“Into the Storm”), VFX Supervisor Colin Strause (“The Avengers”), and composer Andrew Lockington (“Journey 2: The Mysterious Island”).
