Finally, a movie for intellectuals!
The most thought-provoking movie of the year, Collateral Beauty is highly philosophical in its script and execution and will appeal to all those willing to open their mind. Bravo to Warner Brothers for taking a risk on such a innovative script when so many movies are made that are sequels, playing it safe. In the midst of the Christmas/Hanukkah/what you celebrate season, in life many cliches and commercialism penetrate the experience, cheapening it. Collateral Beauty has none of that! It is pure, it is high-level, it is quite abstract and it is something you must see.
"It's those things that we sometimes take for granted for don't notice all the time, but that might be there every day, like a sunset...or fleeting, like a child's smile," says director David Frankel.  "There are millions of examples of collateral beauty; they're unique, and we all have different ideas of what they could be.  They're the reason that we go on, and I think what's really compelling about this story is that it reminds us to take notice of those brilliant fragments of life that make it worth living."
What is your why?
Life is about people.
With a name like Whom You Know, you'd better believe we know that and that is central to our philosophy: we chronicle people's why.   However, we publish only when they do it better than everyone else!
Love, time and death in tandem dictate major themes and they are personified brilliantly here, most notably by the best actress of her generation, Keira Knightley who leaps off the screen in pure conviction of her character.  Why she does not yet have multiple Oscars eludes us.
We were equally impressed with Helen Mirren, and there is not a weak link in the cast at all.  Will Smith performed much better than in other roles we've seen him in; his ability to evoke emotion without words here was particularly laudable.
Citing the holiday classic "It's a Wonderful Life" among his favorites, and one of his inspirations for "Collateral Beauty," Will Smith says, "So many of the actors David approached first said yes.  It was one of those times where we all got it; we all wanted to be a part of delivering this story to the screen."
We long for love.
We wish for more time.
We fear death.
This movie is genuine.
It skips the saccharine.
It is real life, maybe even yours.
The casting is superlative as the acting is stunning throughout the quickly paced, tight hour and 36 minutes. The chemistry between actors was brilliant and seeing their interaction will bring you every variance on your emotional spectrum.
Did you know that three teenagers assembled the dominoes!  They were hired to do the complex mazes in the film and used over 50,000 dominoes: extremely impressive.
The sets were intelligent from the dominoes to the outfits which supported the story correctly. Helen Mirren, you are terrific in bright blue!
"It's original," says Helen Mirren.  "I hadn't read anything like it before and I responded to the concept of collateral beauty and what that means.  It's a lovely idea.  The reality is everyone has a different understanding of these elements; it's private and personal to them.  But undoubtedly, these are among the most important and imaginative ideas we have to grapple with as human beings traveling through life."
This is not a happy movie.
This is a real, authentic, heart-felt movie with highs and lows.
Manhattan even is a character from the parks to the offices to the subways!
And most important, Bergdorf Goodman!!! (are they selling Donna Degnan yet?)
Everyone that is tired of all the special effects with no solid story, this is for you because the plot, though solid as a rock, is incredibly unconcrete and up for thought-provoking discussion as we've ever seen. Unexpected surprises will meet you at every turn so pay close attention; there are many things that happened that we did not see coming.
An added plus is that it concentrates on humanity as a whole; the world can be quite divisive and people may cling to certain groups that they relate to however, Collateral Beauty shows us that we are all an awful lot alike. When was the last movie that did that?!
Go see the most profound movie you'll see all year. You'll be touched: your mind will be challenged as well as your emotions.  Definitely bring the kleenex!

When a successful New York advertising executive suffers a great tragedy he retreats from life. While his concerned friends try desperately to reconnect with him, he seeks answers from the universe by writing letters to Love, Time and Death. But it’s not until his notes bring unexpected personal responses that he begins to understand how these constants interlock in a life fully lived, and how even the deepest loss can reveal moments of meaning and beauty.
