It is a great day for Whom You Know when we discover a new pizza place that makes fantastic pizza.  It's always a great day for hockey, according to Bob Johnson.   We're so glad to introduce you to Gino's Pizzeria and Restaurant (they have yet to create a website), opened since March 1992 by Philip Mangiafridda, an avid hockey enthusiast who surely enjoys NHL Peachy...the only thing greater than great pizza is when it is made by someone that loves hockey as much as we do. Philip also enters the highest echelons of coolness in sharing a birthday with the late great Gordie Howe, March 31st, and Philip has always been a Rangers fan.   Gino's is located at 345 East 83rd Street near 1st Avenue and is named for Gino, Philip's dad who came to America from Sicily in 1953, which was also a great year for cars (Corvette was born!).  Both of Philip's children, Gino and Ginamarie were also named for Gino and are also strong supporters of the sport of hockey, his daughter being a star at Wesleyan (a Loomis Chaffee alum...you know Peachy played field hockey at Miss Porter's).
By the way, we knew nothing about the hockey interest until we saw the Rangers on the wall and asked.  We were going entirely for the culinary endeavors initially but we'll be back for both.  Avid readers know that Peachy Deegan adores vegetables on her pizza, and she ordered spinach, tomatoes, garlic and onion on this spectacular pizza.
We reveled in its beauty, color and nutritional value before our resident pizza monster was released.  The chunky vegetable goodness emanated perfectly from the substantial, wonderful crust.  The piping hot pie was a hat trick in our stomach and from the sauce to the cheese, every essential element of a perfect pizza lit the lamp for Gino's (*but did not score on King Henrik.  By the way he told us he likes dinner and a movie-Dumb and Dumber- when he's not in goal so we hope he's reading:
The pasta we chose was the elegant Pasta Primavera in white sauce.  The vegetables were fresh and appropriately crunchy and this dish absolutely hit the spot.  Avid readers know that Peachy Deegan often ate Chicken Parm when she was a student at Boston College at Lower Dining Hall (where she kept +/- and faceoff stats for Head Men's Hockey Coach Jerry York...do you see a pattern?) and so she orders it everywhere.  Philip's Chicken Parm at Gino's is perfectly pounded poultry that absolutely revels in gorgeous tomato sauce and mozzarella.  And look at how beautifully it's presented.  It looks like it's starting a wave at MSG for the Rangers.
If you like great pizza and terrific neighborhood Italian, Gino's is your spot.
This is totally where you should be going if you like hockey and have tastebuds!
