NIGHTLIGHT: Resource Furniture

On February 26, Peachy Deegan attended the grand opening of the Resource Furniture showroom in the heart of the design district! Whom You Know liked the sharp, clean, modern look of the store and highly recommends it.

Founded in 2000 by Steve Spett and Ron Barth (who has a very nice sister! Karen Barth is the talented artist responsible for the displays in the showroom), Resource Furniture has gained a reputation for providing Interior Designers, Architects and Specifiers access to European Furniture not widely distributed in the US. Resource Furniture has always aimed to provide clients with the finest of European furnishings at competitive prices, with speedy delivery and a focus on unmatched customer service.

Resource Furniture is the national distributor of Italian manufacturer i4 Mariani, which produces the most exquisite contemporary residential and office furniture. In the top photo is the Kristall sofa, which Whom You Know will use as an example of Resource Furniture's commitment to excellence.

i4 Mariani manufactures all of its products exactly to client specifications and can deliver these custom pieces from Italy in about 8 weeks. The manufacturing process is truly unique in terms of the quality of materials and assembly. From the seasoned hardwood frame to the virtually indestructible chrome base to the broad selection of seating densities and the limitless options of high grade fabrics and leathers, meticulous attention to detail assures top quality products time after time. The reason for all of this care and attention to detail is that i4 Mariani builds sofas and all other furniture to last an indefinite period with the expectation that you will get a lifetime of use from one of their products.

Resource Furniture is also the national distributor of Italian manufacturer Clei, which produces unique and innovative dual-purpose wall beds (we call them “Space Savers”.) Collectively, there are over 20 systems in this line including twin, queen, and bunk bed systems, all of which can come with either a sofa, desk, or shelving option as its second function. They are all made to order in virtually any fabric, and a wide selection of laminates, veneers, and lacquers. These are perfect for everyone with space constraints. We have sold these systems to all walks of life. From people who need a system for their third or fourth bedroom on Central Park West to people looking to furnish their tiny studios in Astoria and Long Island City.

BIG APPLE BUSINESS: Kitchen Arts!

Whom You Know learned about Kitchen Arts through the event 2 weeks ago at the Essex House hosted by the excellent Chef Kerry Heffernan! Peachy Deegan thought you might like to know about it too! She chatted with Nach Waxman of Kitchen Arts.

Peachy Deegan: How did the bookstore begin?
Nach Waxman: I opened the store in the fall of 1983 following some 16 years or so working in book publishing--in reference books at Macmillan, and as a senior trade editor at Harper & Row, now, of course, HarperCollins, and at Crown. Wanting to get out of corporate life and wanting to run my own show but not wanting to leave the world of books, I settled on a specialized bookstore in an area that a) interested me, b) had a substantial base of professionals and others seriously engaged in the subject.

Do you have any branches?
No. We've been asked many times to expand, but we prefer to concentrate our energies and our knowledgeable staff in a single location. It's hard enough having one well-run shop without stretching and diluting ourselves just to generate more business.

What was your background?
As I said above, it was book publishing, and even more to the point the world of books in general. I wanted a place that no one would mistake for anything other than a bookstore that was wide-ranging, uncompromising in the integrity of its very broad vision. I come out of anthropology, and this is reflected in the store's coverage, which ranges from cookbooks and wine books to social history, from manuals on farm animals to texts on restaurant accounting, from monographs on rice production to guides to kitchen antiques. Its subject is food as culture.

Do you have any famous clients?
Yes, many, and we've made it a point to not use their names to our advantage. Suffice it to say that pretty much every major chef in the business has crossed our threshold, either to shop or to sign books that they've written . We have provided cookbooks as movie props, filled the shelves of major restaurateur who was designing a model kitchen, supplied books to a well-known jazz pianist who loved to cook and to the private chef for a rock musician.

Do you have any entertaining stories about finding books?
Happily, every book we find seems to have a different story. Our sources are range from distinguished foreign dealers to church sales and flea markets; a retired librarian hunts down books for us, my own travels often turn up long-sought titles. Many adventures, few of them in the sinister depths of the Vatican Library while hiding from assassins.

FASHION ALERT: Marlies Dekkers at the Plaza

‘ Your body, my canvas…’
Marlies Dekkers’ lingerie designs are seen internationally as pioneering, trendsetting and innovative. The traditional romantic lace and ribbon make way for a strong ensemble of lines, layers and subtle cut-outs in unexpected places. The undressed lingerie collection, the sundressed swimwear range and the nightdressed nightwear range are famous for their expression of strength and self-confidence. Marlies Dekkers designs lingerie to please women, and now you can find her designs at the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan!

Marlies Dekkers (1965) graduated from the Academy of Art with distinction in 1991.
With the aid of a government grant, she launched her undressed lingerie collection two years later. With her modern vision on lingerie, she started a small lingerie revolution in The Netherlands and later throughout the rest of Europe. Marlies Dekkers designs from her own vision of life and aims to accentuate women’s self-confidence. Her motto is “Dare to be”. She considers the woman’s body as her canvas and embraces its beautiful parts with the modern straps in her designs.

As early as 1994, she was awarded the Dutch Bodyfashion Award for her collections. In 1997 she received museological recognition with a solo exhibition in the Rotterdam Art Hall. Her work was crowned by ELLE Magazine’s Innovator of the Year Award in 2004. In 2007 the designer felt honored to be awarded the Prix Veuve Clicquot Business woman of the Year Award and to win the New York CILA Award for ‘Best Fashion Lingerie’. 2008 started off with the Parisian Creator of the Year Award, followed by a second New York CILA Award for ‘Best Maternity collection’. The year ended in style with the Prix Marie Claire for ‘Best Fashion Entrepreneur’. On January 20th 2009 she won the Dutch BID LEF Award as ‘The Most Daring Entrepreneur with an Innovative Business Approach’. This award perfectly matches the company motto ‘Dare to be’ and is a promising start of 2009.

marlies|dekkers has grown into an established brand with 1000 points of sale worldwide and stores in cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp, Paris, Bangkok, Berlin and Cologne. marlies|dekkers store number 13 opened its doors during the end of 2008 in the renovated New York Plaza.

Marlies Dekkers does not believe in consumer groups. She designs for all women in all their unique shapes and sizes. She compares the creation of the perfect bra to pure mathematics for which she found her own perfect formula. Whom You Know loves smart women engineers of all kinds who love math- whether they are structuring bonds or garments!

New Collection:

Marlies Dekkers explores the theme of balance in her new give and take collection. A geometric tile print is placed symmetrically on both cups, while fine elastic cord is caught with equal tension between bra cups or across a racer back. All in tones of black, this subtle geometric patchwork print, reminiscent of Dutch tiles, appears matt against the high-shine microfibre.

The print appears on the cups of the three styles of bra; padded plunge and balcony shape, plus an unpadded version. The black underband and straps perfectly match the styles. The fine black elastic cord is designed to frame the cups, emphasising the curve of the breasts. These cords also work their magic on the highly sensuous area of the back between the shoulders. Three styles of tile print brief are included, as is a black viscose long-sleeve jersey top with V-neckline and tie waist.

Marlies Dekkers has not forgotten the curvier girls and has included a new special size range, entitled billet doux, or love letters in her spring summer part 1 collection. Marlies has picked out lines from the poem Passion, from her book 33 Propositions, such as ‘He lives in her imagination…She in his…Maybe that’s the secret of being in love’ and printed them in white onto black elastic. All the lingerie pieces are in black microfibre and are decoratively trimmed with the printed elastic.

There are three bras, three briefs and a knitted cardigan top in black combed cotton with fine white stripes in viscose on one side of the front and back; lines of poetry in white embroidery run around the hem. The bras are available from 70 to 90 in D and E cup and 70 to 85 in F cup.

Retail prices range from $135 to $179 for a bra, $79 to $99 for a brief and $29 to $339 for the coordinating suspender belt, corset, camisole, knitted/jersey tops and stockings.

Sporty Peachy is a fan of Chelsea Piers!

The Chelsea Piers Sports & Entertainment Complex
is a 28-acre sports village built on four historic Hudson River piers. Chelsea Piers features two indoor ice rinks, a state-of-the-art golf driving range, a world-class gymnastics center, indoor playing fields and basketball courts, a 40-lane bowling center, the world's most comprehensive sports and fitness center, restaurants, sports pro shops, Manhattan's largest film and television production center, the most extensive marina in the city, dozens of nationally-acclaimed teachers and coaches, 1-mile public esplanade, and a landscaped waterside park. Whom You Know knows that Manhattan would not be the same without this landmark, essential to the health and well-being of the city!

From the first week that Peachy Deegan lived in New York, she became familiar with Chelsea Piers...when she moved here to work for ABC Investment Bank, she and the other analysts participated in team-building activities such as tug-of-war (yes, Peachy's team won!) and obstacle courses!

There are so many components of the comprehensive complex:

NYC Political Update: Council passes Lappin's bill to protect New Yorkers with Food Allergies

From Jessica Lappin:

For the average New Yorker a simple mistake by a waiter or cook is an inconvenience. If you order decaf and the waiter brings you regular, it might keep you up all night. However, for the 300,000 New Yorkers who suffer from food allergies, a similar mistake could be fatal.

Yesterday, the City Council passed my legislation to require restaurants and other food service establishments to display a poster that provides important food allergy information to their staff. This is literally a life or death issue for millions of Americans. We need to make sure that food preparers in New York City understand the importance of this issue and know how to prevent fatal attacks.

Despite the importance of education in preventing food allergy reactions, a survey conducted by the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in 2007 found that of the 100 restaurant managers, chefs, and servers they surveyed, only 42 percent had received any food allergy education. Twenty four percent thought that it is safe to consume small amounts of an allergen; 25 percent thought that removing problem foods-like nuts or shrimp-from a finished dish would make it safe; and 35 percent believed that fryer heat destroys allergens.

The poster, which will be available in multiple languages, will highlight the most common food allergens, as well as provide information about how to avoid cross contamination and what signs to look for to identify an allergic reaction. The poster will be displayed in a conspicuous location that is visible to food preparers and food handlers. This is a small and simple thing we can do, but it has the potential to save lives.

Peachy Deegan of Whom You Know has had her watercolor done by Bil Donovan at Dior and absolutely loves it! She recently reconnected with today's Mover and Shaker to introduce Whom You Know readers to the great talent!

Peachy Deegan: What have been some of your favorite projects to work on and why?
Bil Donovan: Without a doubt, “The Dress Doctor” “Prescriptions for Style from A to Z”. This book allowed me to entertain my desire to illustrate an era of fashion and glamour that I was acquainted with only through archives, movies and books. What fashion artist would not jump at the opportunity to do glamour portraits of Audrey, Grace and Marlene or Bette? I thoroughly researched Edith Head’s costumes, biographies, films and archives and completely indulged my fantasies of fashion and flair to encapsulate this period with a tongue in chic.

Ralph Rucci:

I am an admirer and huge fan of Ralph’s work, and I believe we share a philosophy of reinventing preconceived notions of making work. I was invited to Ralph’s show and requested to document events and experiences behind the scenes using observation with brush, ink and paper, rather than through the lens of a camera. In these circumstances, you are at once spectator and participant and the experience is invigorating.

You have to think ahead to chart the most efficient method of capturing a scene in constant motion. In other words, you have a very small window of opportunity to do a documentary drawing.

So the importance of line, shape and composition through the lens of observation is magnified. Adrenaline flows as easily as the ink and preconceived notions of drawing are indeed reinvented.

All of your knowledge and skill culminate in a short time span, with no guarantee of success, but when it works, the art enchants the eye, capturing the mood and essence of the moment in color shape and line and spirit. I gave Ralph my best drawing of the show and he eventually commissioned me to create figure drawings to incorporate into his Resort Collection, exquisitely of course. Who could ask for anything more?

Setarium Couture: During my seven year sojourn in Milan, I was commissioned by the then creative director of Italian Vogue to create illustrations for several catalogues and ads for a textile manufacture in Como. I was not enamored of the idea of doing textile illustrations until I arrived in Como to meet at the fabric mill to discuss the work. On the wall were previous lustrations done by Antonio, Tony Viramontes and other luminaries of fashion illustration.

Setarium produced the goods for Emanuel Ungaro, Yves St Laurent and other Houses of Couture. There was no direction except for two commands: Alto Moda and Dovete essere preciso !

The images had to be high fashion and precise in reflecting the patterns, fabrics and textiles…. and so they were and some of the best fashion illustrations in my early career.

What is the most unusual watercolor portrait you have done of someone/something?

One of the most unusual, and most rewarding requests I have ever done was for a family friend who was devastated by a late term miscarriage. I was asked if I would do a portrait of the baby from photos taken by the hospital, as a memento for the mother. It was one of the most difficult assignments I’ve ever taken on and my goal was to see and then recreate light and life from a photo reference that gave no hint of either. The end result was a portrait that communicated life, light and serenity, which in turn gave great comfort to the mother and allowed for an immediate healing process to begin.

On a lighter note, I recently had the pleasure of doing a portrait of New York’s Fashion Dandy, Patrick McDonald. Patrick, as usual wore a wonderful exaggerated top hat, cravat, and the requisite eyebrow. Something was missing from the mix. I respect Patrick’s commitment to visual presentation and would never infringe my fashion sensibility to compromise his personal canvas. So as I was nearing completion of the portrait, I had an idea. I proposed to Mr. McDonald, “Patrick Would you ever wear a large oversized red flower, ala Sara Jessica Parker’s character in Sex In The City, on your lapel? “. And the reply

“ Oh Yes I WOULD!” and so he did… at least in watercolor.

Whom You Know just loves Manhattan; what do you like more and less about it compared to Milan and Paris, where you also have lived?

New York’s energy is unique. Nowhere else have I experienced this pulsating rhythm and pace. The cross pollination of the city’s many cultures, companioned with the social, political and economical extremes in a concentrated area are responsible for that pulse. At times that pulse beats too quickly, which can foster a blind eye and a deaf ear to courtesy, etiquette and common sense.

What is your favorite place to be in NYC?
Lincoln Center, and my studio, a creative Utopia in Tribeca.

What is your favorite shop?
Russo's Mozzarella and Pasta followed by Butter Lane Cupcakes followed by CVS to stock up on digestivo's to counter the former.

What is your favorite drink?
Vernaccio/ Vino Bianco at Bar Veloce.

What is your favorite restaurant?
Café Emila. Stefano and Marco Benatti hold court and conjure up fantastic traditional Italian cusine from the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. A hidden treasure. Followed by Café Mogodar for French Moroccan Bohemian at it's best.

What is your favorite NYC book?
"BREAKFAST AT TIFFANYS"

What is your favorite thing to do in NYC that you can do nowhere else?
Late Night Dinner at Café Loup on Halloween, who needs a floor show.

What do you think is most underrated and overrated?
Underrated: "Downtown Theater
Overrated: "BROADWAY"

Bil Donovan is represented by artscounselinc.com for editorial and advertising.

His studio is in Tribeca.

NIGHTLIGHT: Nicole Romano Pop Up Show at the Plaza!

On Wednesday, February 25 Peachy Deegan attended the fabulous Nicole Romano Pop Up Show at the Plaza! Nicole has come out with some beautiful new looks in both clothing and jewelry, as shown in the above photos.

Romano, a graduate of RISD, clearly shows technical knowledge not present in all designers and her designs have appeared on both the television show and movie "Sex and the City." Whom You Know met her and she was as pleasant as her collection!

This was an event not to miss! The crowd assembled was polished and distinctive and included Rocco DiSpirito, Kim Weling, Ataf Nabli, Dr. Louis Feder, and that girl that calls herself Purple Haze....Hosted by Joel Warren, Edward Tricomi and Seth Greenberg the event at the Plaza Retail collection was a hit.

Whom You Know felt that this was one event that did bring back some of the legendary glamour so characteristic of the Plaza that has been lacking since the rennovation following the 2005 liquidation sale. Bravo Nicole!

As a side note, the only Eloise around was a doll in a display - Whom You Know believes that Nanny had tucked her in before the party started!

READ THIS: Memoirs: David Rockefeller

The Rockefeller Family has had an undeniable lasting impression on Manhattan, and this family member is no different. Tracing his history from early childhood to an afterword addressing September 11, David Rockefeller has led an illustrious life internationally, most notably as CEO of Chase many decades ago.

Whom You Know was initially attracted to the book as Peachy Deegan wondered what it would have been like to grow up as a Rockefeller
(although she is happy to have grown up a Deegan) and what one did when you were "of age"- and she was not disappointed at all. The sheer intelligence and ambition of David Rockefeller is evident in the 500 page autobiography that stretches across decades of his life and the history of Manhattan.

The high-caliber work of international relations, philanthropy, culture and politics is certain to impress any reader who is curious about the world around him/her and the history of one of Manhattan's most prominent families.

Charitable Peachy: The Pink Agenda

Founded by Marisa Lee, The Pink Agenda hosted an evening last night, February 25 called The Great Distraction at the Eldridge.

The Backstory

The Pink Agenda (TPA), formerly known as Saving Second Base, is an organization of young professionals committed to raising money for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) and Susan G. Komen for the Cure
, the country's most effective and efficient breast cancer research and direct care service organizations. They hope that their efforts will not only expedite the eventual discovery of a cure for the disease, but that the awareness they raise among those in our generation will result in earlier detection, as well as knowledge of where to go for support and resources if ever faced with a breast cancer diagnosis.

In a League of its Own

For all of the strides that have been made in the fight against breast cancer, young professionals have remained largely unengaged and underutilized in the search for a cure, and The Pink Agenda is endeavoring to change that.

* According to BCRF and Komen for the Cure, TPA is the only organization in the United States with this specific mission.

* TPA's Board of Directors, which includes young professionals who have graduated from the country's most elite institutions and are employed by some of the nation's most prestigious companies, is uniquely positioned to engage an entirely new generation in this effort.

* BCRF and Komen for the Cure recognize the power that their organizations have to encourage our peers to do well by doing good and are leading supporters of our efforts.

NIGHTLIGHT: Pamela Fiori of Town and Country, Colin Cowie and Sylvia Weinstock at Williams-Sonoma in the Time Warner Center!!!

On February 24, Peachy Deegan attended the fabulous event held at Williams-Sonoma in the Time Warner Center hosted by Town and Country: The Art of Entertaining: living graciously beyond the wedding...However, Whom You Know is highly endorsing all of those involved for their high degree of excellence in entertaining overall, not with weddings specifically. Event planner Colin Cowie, celebrity baker Sylvia Weinstock and Pamela Fiori, editor of Town & Country magazine taught the lovely crowd all they needed to know to be fabulous entertainers in high style anywhere, but they did it in Manhattan!

Featured above is the table that was set and among Cowie's tips were to be creative with placecards [lemons with a sharpie pen were used above! also suggested: postcards of movie stars with guests' names, i.e. Marilyn Monroe], use of candles, and serving food at the table. You may have seen Cowie on Oprah as he has been featured on her show several times. All around it was agreed that the host should make the guests feel comfortable above all else and in this economy, cocktails trump champagne and a nice home-cooked meal served from the cooking dish right at the table are the perfect tricks for a winning evening. Both Williams-Sonoma and Town and Country deserve high marks for putting together such a smart team and an event to please. All items used in the place setting above are from Williams-Sonoma.

Williams-Sonoma served high-quality wines, h'ors doerves of chicken and meat, and Sylvia Weinstock served her top-notch cakes, both vanilla and chocolate. Sylvia's cakes are not merely delicious, they are true works of art and belong in the Metropolitan Museum! Congratulations to Sylvia and her husband on 60 happy years of marriage! Whom You Know KNOWS there is something to learn from Colin Cowie, Sylvia Weinstock, Williams-Sonoma and Town and Country! Peachy Deegan loved them all.
