Sotheby's London To Offer One of the Most Important Groups of Works on Paper by Egon Schiele Ever to Come Auction

On 5 February 2013, Sotheby’s London will offer for sale as part of its Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale one of the most important groups of works on paper by Egon Schiele ever to come to the market. The drawings come to auction from the Leopold Museum in Vienna and carry a combined estimate of $14.3/19.1 million (£9-12 million).

The three works span a critical period of the artist’s output (1914-1917), each of them demonstrating the impeccable draughtsmanship for which Schiele is renowned. The first, Liebespaar (Selbstdarstellung mit Wally) / Lovers (Self-portrait with Wally) of 1914/15 is a transfixing double portrait of the artist with Wally - the artist's model and lover - and displays the deep poignancy of the point in their relationship at which the work was executed (est. $10.4/13.5 million (£6.5/8.5 million). Selbstdarstellung in grünem Hemd mit geschlossenen Augen / Self-Portrait in Green Shirt with Eyes Closed is an electrifying self-portrait, dating from the same period as the Liebespaar, and is estimated at $2.9/4 million (£1.8-2.5 million). The third work in the group to be offered, Am Rücken liegendes Mädchen mit Ã¼berkreuzten Armen und Beinen / Girl Lying on her Back with Crossed Arms and Legs, is one of the artist’s last works (executed in 1918) and is estimated at $1.1/1.6 million (£700,000-1 million). It belongs to a series of line drawings of semi-nude female figures which combine a strong sexuality with a novel sense of perspective that is particular to the artist’s final works. Together the three exceptional works provide a remarkable overview of the breadth of style, technique and composition that characterises Schiele’s best work.

Leota is named after Sarah's great-grandmother. She hopes the real Leota would be pleased. Sarah-now that Peachy has done her research, she wants you to ask Robin if she thinks it is ironic that we picked out a Geometric shape...perhaps that was fate since Al Mann's Geometry classes were such fun!!! Not only are we having the Chris Meigher hit parade this week but it also looks like it is a double when we start counting the class of '93 beginning with Anne...did we guess correctly?

The Timeless Appeal of the Pocket Watch Antiquorum Offers Exceptional Models at December Auction

Pocket watches have long been a subject of interest among watch enthusiasts, fashion savvy and status-conscious men. With popular television shows such as Mad Men celebrating vintage fashion and dapper dress, the pocket watch again becomes relevant and offers men a new opportunity to express their individuality through horology.

Initially developed in the sixteenth century, pocket watches remained popular until the advent of the wristwatch around the time of World War I. Although the wristwatch replaced the pocket watch in terms of common everyday use, the pocket watch continues to be a coveted timepiece that is not only a fashion statement and a nostalgic nod to the past, but can also prove to be a valuable investment.

When looking for a pocket watch, Antiquorum experts suggest considering four factors that determine the value: condition, rarity, complications and craftsmanship. Locating an exceptional example requires some legwork as you’re not likely to find it at your local watch or jewelry store. Often, you can find a good selection of vintage pieces at an auction house.

Antiquorum is pleased to present an outstanding and varied selection of pocket watches at its December 13th auction of “Important Modern & Vintage Timepieces” in New York:

Vacheron Constantin Enamel Pocket Watch

Made in 1945, this is a unique 18K yellow gold and painted on enamel keyless dress watch with a polychrome painted on enamel scene by Helen May Mercier depicting Lake Geneva. Mercier studied under Charles Poluzzi and examples of her work rarely appear at auction. This unique watch is being sold by the family of the original owner and has been kept in immaculate condition since its production over 60 years ago.

Estimate: $ 20,000 – $30,000

Westminster Chime Carillon Minute Repeater Yellow Gold

Attributed to Jean Richard, this exceptional pocket watch was produced in 1910. It is a very fine and very large 18K yellow gold hunting-cased, keyless, minute repeating pocket watch with carillon Westminister chime with four hammers on four gongs.

Estimate: $ 30,000 - $ 50,000

Patek Philippe Split Seconds Chronograph regulator Dial in Box Case Pink Gold

Made for Merrick, Walsh and Phelps, St. Louis, MO in 1882, this is an extremely rare and possibly unique, very fine, keyless, 18K pink gold pocket watch with split seconds chronograph in a heavy and elaborate Patek Philippe box case. Patek Philippe split-second chronograph pocket watches with regulator dials were produced in few numbers and primarily for the US market. While most of these movements were cased domestically, the present lot is the only known example to feature a pink gold box-style case that was made by the Patek Philippe factory. The watch is further distinguished by featuring the movement number on the dial. It was common for the dials and cuvettes to be signed by the retailers, and the present lot bears the signature of Merrick, Walsh & Phelps out of St. Louis, Missouri. The co-founder of Patek Philippe, Antoine Norbert de Patek, personally made the retailer a client in 1885.

Estimate: $ 40,000 - $ 60,000

J. Ullmann & Co. Chinese Market Minute Repeating Chronograph Hunting Case Yellow Gold & Enamel

Made circa 1900, this is a fine 14K yellow gold pearl-set and enamel, keyless hunting cased minute-repeating pocket watch with chronograph.

Estimate: $ 15,000 - $ 25,000

Tiffany Five Minute Repeating & Split Second Chronograph

A very fine and rare, hunting cased, 18K yellow gold, five minute repeating keyless pocket watch with split second chronograph produced circa 1900. It is accompanied by a 36 cm yellow and white gold chain with a rectangular pendant decorated with a dragon and opening slide to reveal 5 dice.

Estimate: $ 8,000 - $ 12,000

Today’s auction of American Art at Sotheby’s New York totaled $27,608,500, exceeding its pre-sale high estimate of $24.2 million* and selling a strong 80.3% of the lots on offer. Multiple bidders competed for many of the works at the top end of the sale, demonstrating demand for quality across a broad range of genres – the auction’s Top 10 pieces include examples of modernism, Western art, American illustration and Impressionism. In total, nine lots sold for over $1 million, and new artist records were established for western artist Alfred Jacob Miller, early modernist Arthur Dove, and regionalist painter Marvin Cone.

The artist’s pastel A White Camellia from 1938 fetched the day’s next-highest result with $3,218,500, also surpassing its high estimate of $1.8 million. Five works by Rockwell totaled an impressive $6,148,500 – more than double their cumulative high estimate of $3 million, with each work selling in excess of its respective estimate. The group was led by The Muscleman from 1941, which saw five bidders drive its final selling price to $2,210,500 (est. 600/800,000).

Sotheby’s sale of Important 20th Century Design, held in New York on 15 December 2012, will offer a curated selection of European and American decorative arts and design from the last 100 years. The 160 lot sale includes a strong selection of French Art Deco masterworks, highlighted by a Highly Important and Unique “Roses” Vase (est. $600/800,000) by René Lalique circa 1913, which is emblematic of the most accomplished work executed in cire perdue glass by Lalique. This early and rare vase was executed by Maurice Bergelin, who was in charge of the molding workshop, under the direction of Lalique. Also up for auction is a unique variant of Demeter Chiparus’ five-figure Les Girls sculpture (est. $300/500,000) which is the only example presently known in this smaller jewel-like scale and turquoise patina color

Also on 15 December is Sotheby’s sale of Important Tiffany which includes a highly-curated selection of iconic works in all artistic disciplines by Louis Comfort Tiffany and Tiffany Studios, highlighted by an exciting selection of the firm’s iconic leaded glass lamps, favrile glass and bronze tablewares. The sale will be highlighted by An Important and Rare “Magnolia” Floor Lamp (est. $650/800,000) circa 1915 with a “Scroll” Senior floor base, one of Tiffany Studios’ most important and defining floor lamp designs. This 28-inch domed Magnolia shade is the largest standard model that Tiffany Studios produced, and the large magnolia blossoms are well-suited to the impressive scale of the shade. This example displays a highly naturalistic glass selection, depicting a range of opalescent white, purple, amber and pale green magnolia blossoms with fiery orange centers, set against a deep and intensely mottled cobalt blue ground.

Both sales will be on view in our York Avenue headquarters beginning on 8 December, alongside the sale of Masterworks by Tiffany Studios from the Geyer Family Collection.

BONHAMS TO SELL THE GEORGE HARRISON FAMILY COLLECTION FORTHCOMING ENTERTAINMENT SALE INCLUDES OVER 100 LOTS OF BEATLES MEMORABILIA

A collection of some of the most important pieces of George Harrison and Beatles memorabilia ever to be offered at auction will be included in Bonhams forthcoming Entertainment Memorabilia sale on 12th December 2012. The collection, which has never been available to the general public, was gifted by George Harrison to his brother Harry and other members of the family.

The most instantly recognisable piece in the sale, representing a key stage in the musician’s career, is George’s iconic Cavern Club and Hamburg era leather jacket. George Harrison was an enormously influential trend-setter and the leather jacket can be clearly seen in many of the Beatles early promotional photographs, including the historic Astrid Kirchherr photo sessions. The jacket was acquired by George during the Beatles residency in Hamburg, Germany, in 1960 and was his favourite onstage garment throughout their 1960-1962 appearances. The jacket will be offered with an estimate of £90,000 – 120,000.

A pair of George’s custom made leather ‘Beatle’ boots, synonymous with the band’s style at the height of Beatlemania in 1964 will be offered with an estimate of £12,000 – 15,000. Harrison can be clearly seen wearing an identical pair of boots during the filming of ‘A Hard Days Night’. So influential were the Beatles at the time, their look was copied by teenagers around the world and formed an important part of fashion history.

Representative of George’s solo career is his bespoke orange western style shirt designed by Nudie’s of Hollywood, identical to that worn during the landmark ‘Concert for Bangladesh’ in 1971.The shirt is estimated at £6,000 – 8,000.

In addition to the Harrison Family collection, a key piece of early Beatles memorabilia will also be sold. A guitar used by Paul McCartney during the 1950s as a member of the pre-Beatles group The Quarry Men, accompanied by a signed letter of provenance from McCartney is valued at £20,000 – 30,000. Celebrating 50 years since the Beatles’ first record release, a large interesting archive of over one thousand photographs of the group throughout their career will be sold with copyright, estimated at £40,000 – 50,000.

Also included in the over 400 lot auction on the 12/12/12 at 12 noon are a number of pieces of stage costume and jewellery relating to Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker during their Cream and Blind Faith days, during the late 1960s, as well as numerous lots relating to Rock legends The Who, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Queen, T. Rex and U2.

In our go, go, go world of Manhattan there is hardly a moment to stop and think, but we'd encourage you to do so just the same.  If you think it is hard to find time to find time to listen to an audio book, we are right there with you but when you find the time for an audio book as amazing as Simon & Schuster's How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, you will find it is absolutely worth it.  Anyone who has ever achieved anything of measure surely has worried along the way, and in our land of overachievement, this work is something that is a great stocking stuffer and New Year's Resolution motivator.

Once upon a time, Dale Carnegie himself was living in Manhattan selling motor trucks, and he didn't know how motors worked and hated his job leading to disappointment, worry and rebellion for him.  Was this life, he wondered?  With little hope for the future, he revamped his attitude and launched an epic thought process that people are still talking about to this day, long after his death.  He next taught salesmen how to sell at the YMCA and worry was a big problem he identified in his students.

Carnegie found that the trouble arose from not ignorance, but rather from inaction and developed a collection of recipes to rid life of worry, like Sir William Olsen's "the best way to prepare for tomorrow is to do your best today."  Doing one thing at a time is crucial but easy to forget in our world of multi-taskers.  Give each task your full concentration, and do it one at a time.  Accumulated yesterdays and fearful tomorrows culminate in worry but if you concentrate on the task at hand, that is the best way to spend time.  If you're so busy you simply don't have time to worry.  Fill your life with stimulating activities (& read us!)

Don't worry about things that will never happen; you're only helping the insurance companies.  Consider the law of averages...

When you are worried about something, ask yourself what is the worst that can happen and how would you be able to accept it?  Can you improve on the worst?  We learned by listening to this that you'll die young if you can't fight worry, so that should be motivation enough!  Also it is said that worry kills your looks-gray hair, wrinkles, pimples...oh my!

Don't be a vengeful person-the high cost of getting even will wind up hurting you more in the long run.  Don't waste a minute thinking about people you don't like.  Practice gratitude and concentrate on the 90% that's right, not the 10% that's wrong.

Find yourself, and be yourself.
Profit from your losses.  When you get a lemon, make lemonade.
Think about what you can do to please others.
Take naps-rest is repair!
Fight for your happiness with cheerful & constructive thinking.
You are stronger than you realize.

Keep the peace of your inner self-and listen to Dale!
Whom You Know Highly Recommends How to Stop Worrying and Start Living by Dale Carnegie!

Casablanca's Iconic Piano, the Most Romantic Movie Prop of All Time, Up For Auction at Sotheby's New York in December

On 14 December 2012, Sotheby’s will offer an icon of the Hollywood silver screen, the Paris piano from the Oscar award-winning Warner Bros. film Casablanca. The American Film Institute has ranked Casablanca the Most Romantic Movie of All Time and the Most Quotable. It is consistently found at or near the top of any list of great films. The romance between Rick (Humphrey Bogart) and Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) is movingly established during the famous flashback scene in Paris at La Belle Aurore. The 58-key piano (est. $800,000/1.2 million) on which Sam plays “As Time Goes By” is the key prop in the intensely romantic scene. Casablanca won three Oscars in 1943 for Best Picture, Best Writing (Screenplay) and Best Director, with Oscar nominations in five other categories, including Best Score. The piano comes to auction on the 70thanniversary of the film, which premiered on Thanksgiving Day in 1942. The flashback at La Belle Aurore, with Rick and Ilsa leaning on the piano while Sam (Dooley Wilson) sings “As Time Goes By,” was the first scene filmed by director Michael Curtiz. The three drink champagne and Bogart utters his now immortal line, “Here’s lookin’ at you, kid,” while outside the café, loudspeakers announce the imminent arrival of the German army.

The piano was sold by Sotheby’s in 1988 to a Japanese collector and at the time the price paid was one of the highest ever achieved for a movie prop. This December, original auctioneer David Redden will be back in the saleroom to offer this important piece of movie history one more time.

Hold onto your hats Manhattan, especially you, Ellen!  We've found yet another restaurant concept: Lebanese influenced by Armenian descent and Almayass is NEW to Manhattan, but not new to the world, having roots in Beirut to start with, with other worldwide locations but only this one in America.   You know we love Armenian people from our dentist, Cosmopolitan Dental, to our dry cleaner, Hallak the Couture Cleaner.  Almayass is family-owned; the daughter of the proprieters, Alidz Alexandrian (not available for photo) runs the New York establishment.  Alidz greeted us when we arrived and Peachy began with a robust Cabernet.
Presentation matters, and we are so impressed with the taste of Alidz's mother, who decorated the venue we understand.  From Chandelier to Tables, she did not miss a thing and everything possessed a beauty that was impressed upon us from the moment we entered Almayass. Mr. & Mrs. Alexandrian, Peachy would like to hear from you!
Alidz suggested we try the Basterma Almayass: Armenian pastrami canape topped with fresh quail eggs.  It was a delightful beginning to an adventurous review!
For the Hot Mezze (appetizer), Peachy Deegan tried the Mantee Traditional, which was her favorite edible aspect of the evening.  Oven-baked artisan made boat shape ravioli filled with seasoned fresh angus ground meat, served with fresh garlic yogurt sauce, topped with sumac was a winning combination!
The consistency is to be adored and the flavor and texture of the sauce is absolutely divine.  Waiter David Rodas was a cordial waiter all evening.
Samkeh Harra-fresh snapper filet, served with sesame paste, onion, cilantro and garlic sauce had an overwhelmingly nutty taste and interesting presentation, as of course we are more used to the fish being presented as an actual fish, but we loved the experience of trying something new.
Ashta with Assaf: cream of the milk, topped with honey, almond and pistachio was a lovely dessert.  The pistachios were a terrific crunchy touch, and Peachy was also pleased to be introduced to Turkish coffee, which has strength we admire.
Our esteemed panelist adds:
Al mayass is a beautiful word and a beautiful restaurant. Its meaning… “when the hanging leaves dance to the rhythm of a delicate breeze”. They describe the cuisine here as Lebanese with Armenian spice. It may have only been open since April, but a newcomer it is not, with four other restaurants throughout the Middle East.
I started with a Tallot Beau Pinot Noir from Burgundy, a very drinkable red.
For our first course, I ordered the Kebbe Sajieh, a fried mixture of meat and wheat , stuffed with walnut, pistachio and onion.
Peachy and I also split the Soujuk Al Mayass, an Armenian beef sausage canapé topped with a quail egg. This was by far my favorite dish, and an original family creation by the owner of Al Mayass.
For my main course I stuck with the sweet and sour Kebab, which is your basic braised beef served with a sweet cherry sauce. The kebab was definitely more on the spicier side.
The restaurant offers a variety of rich sauces, all of which I enjoyed. For desert I ended with the Assorted Lebanese desert which consisted of three small puddings, mostly just to cleanse the pallet; crisp and light, and some Lebanese coffee, with the exact opposite characteristic; being thick with a punch. While the food was a new type of experience for me, I could not get over the décor, best described as sophisticated without being over the top.
Peachy Picks Almayass!
Almayass is Recommended by Whom You Know.
