MOVERS AND SHAKERS: Kick Kennedy of The Legacy Group

Kick Kennedy is the granddaughter of the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy and the eldest daughter of environmental activist Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

Kick is a student at Stanford University where she is majoring in history. As part of a work-study program through the University, she is now at Rolling Stone magazine – where she is honing her journalism skills.

Kick’s passion is travel. She and her father recently embarked on a white water rafting trip down the Colorado River with their friends Wade Davis, a noted anthropologist, and his daughter, Tara. Their adventures were documented in the IMAX film Grand Canyon Adventures.

The movie is helping raise awareness for the world water crisis and the importance of water conservation.

Kick is an active ambassador for the Waterkeeper Alliance, the national organization connecting and supporting local Waterkeeper programs to provide a voice for waterways and their communities worldwide. She has chosen to donate all proceeds from her work with the Legacy Group to that organization. She is also a member of The Legacy Group, previously covered by Whom You Know and the site is among Peachy Deegan's favorites. Whom You Know is so pleased to present Kick Kennedy as our latest Mover and Shaker!

Peachy Deegan interviewed Kick Kennedy for Whom You Know.

Peachy Deegan: How is your internship going at Rolling Stone?
Kick Kennedy: It’s a gas, gas, gas!

What kind of projects do you work on there?
Transcriptions, research projects, and compiling news packets. I spend a lot of time with the copy machine.

What inspired you to join The Legacy Group?
I think it’s a unique approach to philanthropy and a good chance to help the Waterkeeper Alliance. Fun, too!

What aspects of your personal style do you hope to incorporate into The Legacy Group products?
I have a simple style that I compliment with funky accessories. Like a pretty empire waist dress with my Peruvian cowboy boots.

What is the most fun part of being a Kennedy?
My brothers and sisters—there are five of them and they are a riot!

How did you choose Stanford?
With a simple equation: Quality of Education x Distance from Home = School’s Appeal. Stanford won with a score of 28,350 (10 x 2,835). It was a wonderful decision and Stanford lives up to its fine reputation—I’ve learned so much during my time on the left coast, but I also have learned that there is no place like home.

What other people do you think would be great to join The Legacy Group in the future?
We’ve been so busy starting with just three that I haven’t considered who may join the adventure next.

What are your favorite bodies of water?
The Nantucket Sound. I also have to give a shout out to the lake behind my house. It’s a hidden gem—I’ve never caught so many fish!

What are some basic things people in Manhattan can do to conserve water that they might not think of?
Repair leaky faucets, use a low-pressure shower head (sad, but true), and don’t let the water run while you shave or brush. If you’re really hardcore, you can also stop flushing your toilet or at least abiding by the mantra, “If its yellow let it mellow, if its brown, flush it down.” That’s one I haven’t yet opened up to…

What is your favorite place to be in NYC?
I love Prospect Park in Park Slope, especially if its summer during free concert season.

What is your favorite shop?
I love LF.

What is your favorite drink?
Gin and Ginger

What is your favorite restaurant?
Nello’s

What is your favorite NYC book?
The Mole People! They are among us…

What is your favorite thing to do in NYC that you can do nowhere else?
Have hope that one day I may be picked up by the cash cab.

What do you think is most underrated and overrated here?
Overrated – Times Square. What a headache! Also, I’ve seen better Bloomingdale's.
Underrated – The beautiful park space along the Hudson. Especially in the midtown region.

What else should Whom You Know readers know about you?
I’m just some broad trying to make her mark on this old piece of rock in the sky. Also, I'm obsessed with bacon.
