Sporty Peachy: Chicago Blackhawks Capture Game One of the Stanley Cup Finals Over the Philadelphia Flyers; Coach Joel Quenneville Orchestrates a Commanding Victory

The Stanley Cup Playoffs are a religious experience for Peachy Deegan.  Truly the most wonderful time of the year (well, maybe equal with St. Patrick's Day), the Stanley Cup Playoffs epitomize the joy of being alive and show everyone that the good news in the world is indeed highlighted in the sports section of the newspaper, or more appropriately, the website.  The only thing that Peachy can remember before about hockey attending hockey games herself is her family leaving her behind as a 3/4 year old as they took the route up 91 north when the Hartford Civic Center roof collapsed.  When she was 5 she attended her first NHL game and she hasn't been the same since.  With the Civic Center roof repaired,  Peachy with her family spent the bulk of her childhood at hockey games cheering for the Whalers.

Although the beloved New York Rangers are not in the playoffs, we have learned over the years to appreciate the sport itself and not just the one team in blindless loyalty.  As time has gone on, our original team was sold to North Carolina and of course we are loyal to the Rangers of course, doubly because their farm team is in Hartford.  Especially since the mantra of Whom You Know is excellence appreciated, the Stanley Cup Playoffs are clearly the best there is.   And the best right now are the Chicago Blackhawks and the Philadelphia Flyers.  If you aren't on those teams right now, you are on the golf course!

We told you in Game One of the Western Conference Finals that Chicago would win:
http://www.whomyouknow.com/2010/05/sporty-peachy-game-one-western.html
They did.

If you go far enough back in the Hartford Courant archives, you will find a few articles written to the Editor of the Sports Section of why Joel Quenneville is the best coach around written by yours truly.  We must admit, we say this with prior life experience: we knew he would be fabulous because he was one of the best as a defenseman in Hartford from the 1983-84 season, and as he put the "D" in Defense then he now puts the "Q" in quality as a coach.  Possibly famous at the time for his striking resemblance to Magnum PI/Tom Selleck, Quenneville was a dominant force in both leadership and hockey skill in Hartford for many years and was an influence on Peachy's childhood.  Quenneville won the Stanley Cup as an assistant coach with the Avalanche in 1996.

The fire that has been shown in the sheer determination of these players from the drop of the puck during the first period trumps any Superbowl or World Series we have ever seen: Americans please note the sport of hockey is far underrated in our country!  In Connecticut when Peachy was growing up, there was not a professional MLB, NFL or NBA team, but there were the Hartford Whalers and if you went to those games you will understand!  In fact, Howard Baldwin is in the process of resurrecting the franchise, which we will of course keep you apprised of in our Take a Trip to Connecticut column.  Take a look at the popular facebook group:
http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/WhalerNation?ref=ts

In tonight's matchup, both the Flyers and the Blackhawks came to play in a big way.  Facing off in Chicago's United Center on Madison Street (not to be confused with our Madison Avenue, which also was quite hopping today), it was the epitome of offensive intensity from the drop of the puck.  Neck and neck throughout much of the game, the offense of both teams thoroughly challenged the respective defensive units.  With Captain Mike Richards of Philadelphia leading the way along powerhouse Chris Pronger, they Flyers were dominant forces throughout much of the game, but not enough of it.

We believe, though we did watch recreationally and did not keep official stats, that the Flyers did not have a penalty during the game.  If they had won, it would have been the first time since 1953 that a team won without a penalty.  However, the penalty killing of the Blackhawks was brilliant and we must say we think this is a credit to their coach.

The most beautiful part of the game was executed with 8:10 to go in the 1st when on a breakaway, Dave Bolland scored for Chicago inbetween the Philadelphia goaltender's legs in a shorthanded situation.  To us, this is more beautiful than Central Park on a day where there isn't a cloud in the sky, more beautiful than the most coveted dresses at Bergdorf Goodman for all the "it" girls, more beautiful than the Dow exceeding record highs...this is a Stanley Cup high.  (In pottery class many years ago, Peachy made the Stanley Cup when the other students were making bowls and vases.)

Early on in the second when the game was tied at 3, it was clear that this was not to be a game of goaltending but to be a game of snipers that could put the puck in the net.  In our opinion, the turning point came when Chicago was up 5-4  and the Philadelphia goalie was pulled, or it could have been when Chicago captured the lead which would be the final score of 6-5 with 11:35 to go in the third when patience with the puck paid off for the Blackhawks.

Our only complaints about the game would be that NBC used no women commentators (We will volunteer!) - men do work in women-dominated industries; just think of all of the men who influence the Beauty and Fashion industries!  Also, we would have liked to have seen Lee DeWyze, current American Idol hailing from Chicago singing the National Anthem, but perhaps at another game of the series.  All in all, we are SO HAPPY that Chicago won and we hate to say it, but we did tell you they were the best!  Whom You Know is about the Best of Manhattan, but we are starting to think that Chicago is our kind of town...isn't that what Sinatra said!

***

It's not Who You Know, it's Whom You Know, and Peachy first met Joel Q. as a kid, and he is a class act  through and through.  We can speak to his successes for over 25 years.  This is of course in red, a Blackhawks color.

Top It Off with Ellen Christine and Peachy Deegan! What is a little black dress without an accompanying Fabulous Black Hat! Whom You Know Highly Recommends The Ribboned Black Summer Topper by Ellen Christine

With over 30 years’ experience designing and fabricating authentic a la main millinery for both the theatre and the couture fashion crowd, Ellen Colon-Lugo claims the undisputed crown for authentic epoque and high fashion millinery.   We believe she is among the very best worldwide and Peachy Deegan is proud to wear the above creation by Ellen!  We are so pleased to present our first critique on Ellen Christine's hats.

If you don't know about Ellen Christine, your head is fashionably challenged!  A doctoral candidate in costume history at New York University, Ellen reigns at her Chelsea boutique, which Peachy is so glad she swung by and inquired about one day when she quite literally was walking down the street that day to whatever umpteen event.  We don't remember the event but we remember Ellen Christine. Ellen exquisitely produces each one-of-a-kind hat to her exacting specifications, down to the opulent and historically accurate pattern making, stitching and materials.

Catering to collectors, designers, and stylists alike, Ellen Christine’s mouth watering styles, available exclusively at her boutique, fuse history, fashion and high drama.

This style
is a modernization of Ellen Christine's sculptured straw, developed for spring 2011.  Clearly a dressy hat, it is fit for the finest of galas and perfect for a day of Polo where you will be seeing Peachy wear it-make sure this Polo event is on your calendar:
http://www.whomyouknow.com/2010/05/peachy-and-polo-veuve-clicquot-polo.html

We are confident that the best looking hats in residence that day will have an Ellen Christine label!  Her hats are pure quality.   They stay on your head in windy Manhattan days, they fit perfectly, and this one has great artistic and technical workmanship.    The Ribboned Black Summer Topper is a delight to dresses in Manhattan, day and night, and it is not too heavy so it won't crush your hairstyle.  It is delicate enough to make you an it girl but will stand up to a night on the town including dinner, dancing and whatever your agenda dictates.  Whom You Know highly recommends The Ribboned Black Summer Topper by Ellen Christine!  Order yours today.

An Update from our Friends at Global Green

Whom You Know was introduced to Global Green by Pureology, one of our favorite brands!  An update from Global Green:

Like most Americans, I continue to be depressed and angered by BP's wholly inadequate response to the tragic BP oil spill, despoiling the Gulf Coast and wetlands of Louisiana.

Hopefully, the 'top kill' works to stop the continued leak. But if that succeeds, its only the beginning of what will take years, if not decades, to recover from the worst oil spill in history.
The worst environmental disaster in our nation's history.

It is all hands on deck time -- for stopping the spill, cleaning it up, holding BP accountable (and not allowing it to hide behind semantics of "legitimate claims" to avoid making good on their commitment to cover the costs of the spill), and reducing our oil dependency while creating a cleaner, greener future.

As you may know, Global Green and the Commercial Fishermen of America recently organized a community event to send a “human text message” to BP, President Obama, and Congress about their concern and anger about the BP Oil Spill. This was just days before oil hit their community's beaches and nearby wetlands.
Watch video from the event.

They said "
NEVER AGAIN." We must join with them in sending this message to BP and the oil industry, as well as to Congress and the federal government.

Margaret Curole, a local resident and board member of Commercial Fisherman of America, shared with me the sentiment in Grand Isle yesterday:

“Everyone's tempers are flaring over the...inability to recognize the importance of urgent action, but after Katrina I have no idea why we should expect different. The beach where we took the picture is closed and I couldn't get close.”

Global Green is continuing to
document the impacts of the spill on the Gulf Community, helping to rally emergency food relief efforts for the impacted communities of the Gulf, calling for more regulation of the oil industry and increasing investment in renewable energy and clean technologies. We also must demand that BP pay every penny owed as the ecosystems and communities recover.

If you’d like to help with our efforts,
please donate here. You can also read more about the impacts on the Gulf Coast community on our blog.
With President Obama visiting New Orleans today, we’ve prepared a statement which I wanted to share with you.

NIGHTLIGHT: El Museo Gala 2010 Oscar de la Renta Honored Placido Domingo latin society dazzled New York City Renee AND Alvaro Domingo, Yaz AND Valentin Hernandez Gala Chairs

On Thursday, May 27, Oscar de la Renta presented a special lifetime achievement award to Plácido Domingo at El Museo del Barrio’s annual gala at Cipriani 42nd Street, in New York City. Tony Bechara, the museum’s long-serving board chairman, was also honored with a special leadership award.  Yaz and Valentín Hernández once again served as the gala chairs, this year joined by Renée and Alvaro Domingo. The 2010 gala also recognized the dedication and achievements of El Museo’s outgoing executive director Julián Zugazagoitia.  The evening raised over one million dollars for El Museo.

Barbara Walters, who had planned to be mistress of ceremonies, sent a touching message that was read by Mr. de la Renta and brought tears to many, “Dear Placido: Only an injured heart would keep me from being with you tonight.  You may have heard that I have had recent surgery to replace a faulty heart valve.  I am doing very well but not quite ready to jump rope or go out.  How I wish I could say these things in person.  You are the musical genius of our time…that glorious voice…who else can sing both as a tenor or baritone…and conduct a symphony orchestra…and administer an opera company…and teach and encourage and inspire.  You are superb in every capacity.  Then there is your long marriage and companionship with the divine Marta…and the devotion of your children.  A life so full.  But not too full to always remember friends like me…whom you call Santa Barbara…the only time anyone has called me a saint.  No wonder I love you.  I said you were a genius, didn’t I?  But I am hardly alone in my regard for you.  In addition to your millions of fans, there are all those with you tonight thanking you for your devotion to the Museum. My hear may be aching a bit tonight but it is full of the happiest thoughts of you.”

As ever, the evening brought out some of the most extraordinary fashion.  Chairman Yaz Hernandez was no exception wearing a one of a kind dress made especially for her by Brian Reyes, who said, “I chose a golden gown because the color embodies power and strength. I’m constantly drawn to the memories of pre-Colombian gold I saw growing up in Colombia.  It's only fitting that Yaz would indulge my childhood fantasies by wearing gold to fête honoring one of the great tenors of our time. Yaz radiates - a perfect pairing.”

Peachy Deegan enjoyed meeting:

Guests also included: Narciso Rodriguez, Angel Sanchez, Maria Cornejo, Moises de la Renta, Laura and Dick Parsons, Estrellita and Daniel Brodsky, Claudia Cisneros, Christian Cota, Jane and Calvin Catritz, Barbaralee Diamonstein and Carl Spielvogel, Olga and Tony Duke, Donald and Adelle Hall, Eleanor and Michael Kennedy, Alexandra Lebenthal and Jay Diamond, Ambassador John L. Loeb, Liz and Jeff Peek, Candy Price, Angel Sanchez, Gillian and Sylvester Miniter, Silvia Ortiz,  Enoc Perez, Jane and Reed Rubin, John and Gaily Beinecke, and many more.

The gala’s stellar honorary committee included José Solís Betancourt, Rubén Blades, María Cornejo, Francisco Costa, Christian Cota, Benicio del Toro, Alex González, Carolina and Reinaldo Herrera, Marilyn Horne, Carlos Mota, Candy Pratts Price, Brian Reyes, Narciso Rodríguez, Angel Sánchez, and Isabel + Rubén Toledo.

Always one of the most exciting tickets in the city’s social calendar, the evening began with cocktails at seven o’clock followed at eight o’clock by dinner and dancing. A dramatic white carpet ran not only up the entrance stairs but also on across the marble floors of the reception area and through the dining hall onto the dance floor. Tables were decorated with oversized silver and Lucite candlesticks.  The 13-piece Bob Hardwick orchestra, all dressed in white dinner jackets, played a mixture of Latin and Café Society dance music late into the night.

The menu began with risotto with Spanish saffron, followed by seared scallops with black bean salsa garnished with micro greens and cilantro, and tostones.  Desserts included guava, lemon, and coconut sorbet decorated with pomegranate seeds in a chocolate shell and passion fruit sauce, as well as flan.

The annual bash has come to symbolize the pride Latin Americans, Latinos, and non-Latino friends and colleagues in New York take in their cherished museum. Guests flew in from South America, Caribbean, and Europe in order to attend. The hugely successful event raised $1.1 million dollars that will go toward funding for El Museo’s art education and community outreach programs.

About Plácido Domingo: born in Spain, raised from age eight in Mexico, he is a world-renowned, multifaceted artist, recognized as one of the finest and most influential singing actors in the history of opera. He is also a lauded conductor and a major force as an opera administrator. But most admirable of all is the enormous good he has accomplished through his prodigious gifts. Mr. Domingo has dedicated himself to the support and education of young artists across the world, and has raised millions of dollars for the victims of Mexico’s devastating earthquake in 1985 and natural disasters in Guerrero, Yucatán, El Salvador, and New Orleans.

About Tony Bechara: an acclaimed artist represented in numerous private and public collections, he is featured in museum exhibitions around the world. El Museo honors him at this year’s Gala for his brilliance as a leader. During more than a decade as Chair of El Museo’s Board of Trustees, Mr. Bechara has guided the institution as it evolved into a thriving institution with a stellar international reputation.

About Julián Zugazagoitia: This year’s Gala is the last that he will attend as Director and CEO of El Museo. After remarkable eight-year tenure, he will soon take the reins at the prestigious Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City.  The Board and staff of El Museo wishes him continued success.

Limited Edition Print: the international renowned artist Enoc Perez has created a limited edition print, which was unveiled at the Gala and sold to benefit El Museo. This beautiful new work is printed by the Lower East Side Printshop. Born in Puerto Rico and based in New York, Perez layers pictures selected from postcards, downloaded images, or his own Polaroid’s, by pressing paper backed with wet oil stick monochromes against a canvas or paper, and drawing on its surface. In 2007 Perez was the focus of a major survey exhibition at MoCA at Goldman Warehouse, Miami. He has exhibited in museums and galleries in the Americas and Europe, including the Centre Pompidou, Paris; The Collezione Maramotti, Reggio Emilia, Italy; The UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Connecticut; and El Museo de Barrio, New York.

About El Museo del Barrio: El Museo del Barrio, New York’s leading Latino cultural institution, welcomes visitors of all backgrounds to discover the artistic landscape of Latino, Caribbean, and Latin American cultures. Their richness is represented in El Museo’s wide-ranging collections and exhibitions, complemented by film, literary, visual and performing arts series, cultural celebrations, and educational programs.  A dynamic artistic, cultural, and community gathering place, El Museo is a center of Latino pride on New York’s museum mile.

Just What Your Feet Need for Memorial Day in Manhattan: Cole Haan FLX Air Gearhart! COLE HAAN TO LAUNCH NEW COLE HAAN FLX COLLECTION SMART DESIGN FOR THE MODERN LIFESTYLE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BY WHOM YOU KNOW

At Whom You Know, we highly advocate being smart and beautiful and with the new FLX by Cole Haan, you and your feet can be both! Peachy Deegan loves the classy yet innovative Cole Haan FLX Air Gearhart in White for Memorial Day Weekend in Manhattan, and for the whole summer! At
$108.00 they are worth every penny, and they are Style #D31307.  The unique strap sets off your pedicure and the diagonal strap is slimming and flattering to all foot widths.  The s
ophisticated design meets Nike Free inspired technology, pairing modern style with sport mechanics in soft full grain ivory leather.  They are seriously comfortable and you will be able to walk for miles in them, and they do look better than sneakers.  With Cole Haan's partnership with Nike however, you do get the positive sneaker components.  This is a very well-made sandal and it is dressy enough to pair with a dress yet casual enough for a trip to the beach.

The Stats:
*Stretchy fabric in back heel allows easy entry and enhanced fit
*Ultimate cushioning with NIKE AIR Technology in the heel
*Lined in leather
*Comfort padded leather footbed reverses to a different color
*Lightweight Nike Free inspired rubber sole allows the foot to move with more natural motion and flexibility
.

In Spring 2010, Cole Haan launched Cole Haan FLX, a collection of men’s and women’s footwear and accessories that have been re-thought, re-worked, and re-imagined to address the function and style demands of the modern lifestyle.

In collaboration with Nike, whom we also love (See our latest Nike review and click this), Cole Haan has applied new solutions in the areas of lightweight, flexibility, comfort and versatility to a fusion of sport and dress casual silhouettes.

Sixteen distinct footwear styles incorporate supple Cole Haan leathers into seamless uppers with ventilated Nike DiamondFLX inspired sole units. But it’s the less obvious design details in Cole Haan FLX that truly bring new thinking to sport casual footwear. Stretch laces, elastic at the heel and a single rear zipper on a gladiator sandal facilitate easy-on-and-off at the airport or after a workout at the gym. Unlined construction means lighter weight, enhanced breathability and increased flexibility. The footbed of the women’s sandal can even be removed and flipped over to reveal a different color or look.

Many of the features take cues from the world of sport. Nike DiamondFLX inspired outsoles utilize technology from Nike cross trainers to allow the foot to move in a more natural motion, providing comfort and flexibility with zero break-in time. Ports in the outsole facilitate air flow through the shoe, which can help keep the foot dry over the course of a multi-day business trip. Select silhouettes also include moisture management membranes to protect against rain-soaked commutes, yet still allow vapor from the inside to escape for cooling.

The accessories collection offers a range of options for the commuter, weekender, or frequent traveler. The men’s backpack borrows design details found in Nike’s outdoor product like seam-sealed zippers for protection and performance fabrics in the areas where the pack interfaces with the body to wick away moisture. Padded pockets ensure a protected space to carry a computer, while soft interior pockets allow for a scratch-free environment in which to store items such as a watch or cell phone.

The women’s multi-purpose tote includes straps with D rings which externally cinch down a yoga mat or beach towel, as well as several easy access external pockets and a main compartment with a magnetic closure. It also includes a packable, reusable shopping tote inside.

The Cole Haan FLX design solutions simplify life, and provide a truly modern approach to dressing. This ultra versatile collection reflects Cole Haan’s commitment to innovative design rooted in classic quality and craftsmanship.
Whom You Know highly recommends the Cole Haan FLX Air Gearhart!!!  They are fabulous.

Sotheby's Paris -- Furniture, Silver & Old Master Paintings formerly from the collection Madame Antenor Patino / Sept 22

On 22 September 2010 Sotheby’s Paris will have the honor of offering Furniture, Silver and Old Master Paintings from the collection of Madame Antenor Patiño.  The collection - divided between La Quinta, her principal residence in Portugal, and her Paris flat - affords Sotheby’s the opportunity to once again pay tribute to the renowned Patiño taste and style, in particular to that of Beatriz Patiño (Madame Antenor Patiño), the guardian of this legacy until her death in 2009.

Such taste and style were found in all of her residences, starting with La Quinta, her sumptuous home in Estoril (Portugal) completed in 1990, where every detail contributed to the subtle harmony between the Baroque and more intimate decor.  Madame Patiño lavished similar care on decorating her Paris flat and New York apartment - a portion of whose contents were offered by Sotheby’s in 1997, when she moved to a new home in New York.

The sale of this collection at Sotheby’s Paris, staged in collaboration with the experts Millerand & Saint-Seine, perpetuates a tradition dating back to the Antenor Patiño estate auction in New York in 1986.  Sotheby’s has since had the great honour of selling collections of books and manuscripts, furniture, silver and Old Masters from various branches of the Patiño family.

Yves Rocher opens first Canadian franchise in Edmonton on June 1st! Yves Rocher Opens First Franchise in North America and First Store in Western Canada

Yves Rocher, The Creator of Botanical Beauty opened its first North American franchise in the West Edmonton Mall today. The 648 square foot store called The Atelier of Botanical Beauty, is located on floor one of the mall near the 44 door entrance.  “We are incredibly excited for both the Brand and our franchisee because this represents a real milestone for Yves Rocher globally and a real opportunity for Oksana Pachine and her partner Anna Stsibaylo,” says René Desmarais, CEO of Yves Rocher North America Inc. The Yves Rocher Group is a global beauty leader, ranked in the top 15 beauty brands in sales and volume, with 3.2 billion USD  in sales and one of the few large, family-owned, beauty-businesses in the world. “We were saddened to lose the founder, Mr. Yves Rocher, right before the start of the new year but pleased that the Brand is continuing on the path of global expansion laid-out by Mr. Rocher,” he adds. The opening coincides with the Brand’s 50th anniversary which is being celebrated this year.
Yves Rocher has been operating in North America since the mid-eighties running a direct mail business in Canada and the United States and a store business in Canada. Later, in 2005, it launched an Internet sales site as well. While both the direct mail and Internet business service both Canada and the United States, the store business remained regional, operating close to 70 stores in Eastern Canada with locations in Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick. Last year, with the global launch of the new Atelier store concept, the company announced that it would be offering franchises across Canada to help with its on-going expansion. The company’s goal is to introduce franchising in the U.S. in the next few years.

The Canadian store business was somewhat of an anomaly as globally close to 75% of the 1,800 store chain is franchised. “We wanted to keep our stores corporate until we had the right formula for the North American market,” says René Desmarais. “With The Atelier of Botanical Beauty we know we have the right concept.” Launched in May of last year, the Atelier is delivering an average +15% sales increase versus the previous store concept.

Mr. Yves Rocher used in his attic laboratory in La Gacilly, France when he first started the company. A large visual of one of Yves Rocher’s organic fields is front and centre at the cash. The company organically cultivates about 33% of the raw plant material it needs for its global production. The rest is ethically sourced around the world, depending on the actives needed in a product. Finally emblematic visuals of women and plants recall the Brand’s proximity to women and the fact that all its products are botanically-based.

“I am so happy to be the first franchisee in Canada,” says Oksana Pachine. “I’ve known Yves Rocher for many years because it is a very popular brand in Russia. What I like is its plant-based products and its focus on the environment and sustainable development. As franchisees we also receive very targeted marketing and communications support,” she adds. Yves Rocher is known world-wide as a highly specialized direct marketing company, which contributes to its success in all of its sales channels. “When you purchase an Yves Rocher franchise you always benefit from tremendous corporate support such as marketing and communications tools, training and data sharing, says Stéphane Duval, Director, Stores, Yves Rocher North America Inc.  “Customers who sign up to our rewards program receive between 12 to15 special offers a year with additional discounts, free products, gifts and of course our expert beauty advice. On average between 18%-30% of customers come back with their offer,” says Duval. “That’s on top of walk-in customers,” he adds. In Canada, more than 90% of Yves Rocher store customers have signed up to the rewards program.

Yves Rocher plans to franchise more than ten locations before the end of the year and has interested parties for franchises from Halifax to Vancouver.

PUR Water Filtration Systems Recommended by Whom You Know

Earthy Peachy is always trying to come up with some great Gotham Gadgets to make your life better, and what could be more important than clean water?  We are pleased with the Pur Water Filtration System that we have been testing.  Its superior water quality is just what you need to hydrate your body and eliminate plastic water bottles from your daily routine.  Not only is this fabulous for your home, but it is equally useful at the office.  The Water Filtration System is even better than the pitcher because you have to fill it less often and when you have guests or if you live in a large household (uncommon in Manhattan), more water is available for the thirsty masses (!) which is especially important during the incoming summertime!

WHY PUR FILTERED WATER?
Water is the body’s principal chemical component and every system in the body depends on it to function properly. In fact, 60-70 percent of your body is composed of water. Water provides life sustaining nourishment for your skin, hair, muscles and brain, which is why it is so important that the water you drink be the absolute best quality. As our water infrastructures age, we’re learning our tap water is not as clean as it could be. In fact, several major U.S. cities still rely on water pipes that were installed more than 100 years ago. While the contaminants or other substances removed or reduced by PUR water filters are not necessarily in all users’ water, by-products from chlorine, along with lead, sometimes show up in our tap water in addition to agricultural pollutants, heavy metals, sediment, pharmaceuticals and microbial cysts.

DID YOU KNOW?
Water Filtration:
PUR Water Filtration products do far more than provide great-tasting water. PUR reduces many unwanted contaminants to provide clean water right from your tap.

  • PUR is the first leading brand to claim removal of pharmaceuticals identified in U.S. tap water – more than 99 percent for PUR faucet filters and more than 96 percent for PUR pitchers.*
    • The main workhorse of PUR filters is activated carbon. Contaminants in water collide with the activated carbon particles and get trapped in the intricate pore structure of the carbon, thus removing the contaminant from the water stream.
  • PUR filtration systems remove 99.9 percent of microbial cysts such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium parvum, which can lead to intestinal illness.
  • PUR filtration systems remove 98 percent of lead and 97 percent of chlorine (taste and odor).
  • PUR is the only leading pitcher certified by NSF to claim reduction of the weed killer atrazine.
  • PUR is certified by NSF International and the Water Quality Association (WQA) and is tested by other third-party laboratories.
  • PUR reduces contaminants in the water while leaving fluoride, which is essential for developing and maintaining healthy teeth in children and adults, and has been granted the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Approval.
 Drinking Water Infrastructure and Contamination:
  • In 2009, the American Society of Civil Engineers gave America’s water infrastructure a grade of a D-.
  • The Environmental Protection Agency reported approximately 10-20 percent of human exposure to lead is attributable to lead in tap water.
  • In April of 2009, The Associated Press reported that a vast array of pharmaceuticals — including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones — were found in the drinking water supplies of 51 million Americans.
  • In August of 2009, The New York Times reported that the common weed killer atrazine may be dangerous at lower concentrations than what is currently allowed by the EPA, which may lead to birth defects and low birth weights in children.
PŪR pharmaceutical filtration claims based on manufacturer testing of faucet mounts and pitchers on 12 pharmaceuticals, which may not be present in all users’ water.

PUR IS IMPROVING LIVES AROUND THE WORLD
Water is one of the basic elements of life. Yet, about 4,000 children in developing countries die every day from illness and disease related to unsafe drinking water. Fortunately, the Children’s Safe Drinking Water (CSDW) Program and the water purification technology by PUR are working together to make this statistic part of the past by providing clean drinking water to children in developing countries around the world who lack access to this common necessity.

DID YOU KNOW?
  • Many children in developing countries simply don’t have access to clean, safe water in their communities. With no running water, many families have no choice but to drink from rivers and streams contaminated with bacteria, parasites and viruses, which contribute to a prevalence of diarrhea-related illnesses that cause widespread death.
  • In collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), P&G developed a low-cost water purification technology, a powdered product that effectively reduces parasites, bacteria and other contaminants found in water.
  • The CSDW Program distributes water purification technology in the form of PUR packets, which are as small as a tea bag – each tiny packet can transform up to 10 liters of contaminated water into clean, purified water within minutes.
  • The CSDW Program is helping to prevent water-related disease in many countries through education of communities about the importance of clean drinking water, emergency relief work related to natural disasters and the establishment of not-for profit markets to distribute PUR water purification technology.
  • To date, the program has provided more than 1.9 billion liters of clean drinking water to people in developing nations*, and they plan on delivering 4 billion liters of clean drinking water from 2007-2012.
 HOW IS PUR HELPING?
  • A portion of the proceeds from the sales of PUR water filtration systems are donated to help fund the CSDW Program. When consumers make the choice to buy a PUR system, they are not only providing clean water for themselves and their families, but also donating a week’s worth of clean water to a child in the developing world.
  • Donations from PUR will go towards the P&G goal of providing more than 4 billion liters of clean drinking water in the developing world from 2007-2012, preventing an estimated 160 million days of diarrheal illness and saving an estimated 20,000 lives.
  • Please visit www.CSDW.org for program details.
Calculated based on sales and distribution data provided by CSDW non-profit partners around the world.

PUR IS SUSTAINING HEALTH
Many Americans are becoming more aware of what they put in their bodies. They take extra time to read food labels and evaluate their food and beverage choices; however, many don’t realize that they may be ingesting unwanted contaminants such as lead, pesticides and microbial cysts in unfiltered tap water. PUR Water Filtration gives your body the essential hydration it needs, while reducing unwanted contaminants. This way, you get the most out of your tap water.

DID YOU KNOW?
Health
  • A recent survey showed that Americans rank clean water as one of the major factors for maintaining good health. And with good reason – the body is 60 to 70 percent water and needs it to function well.
  • Research shows that mild dehydration can lead to significant impairment of cognitive function, including confusion and irritability. In children, dehydration may even cause diminished mental capabilities.
  • It takes about two liters of water (a little more than eight cups), along with your normal diet every day, to replace the fluids lost through your breathing, perspiration, urine and bowel movements.
  • Drinking more water can help prevent kidney stones by helping to flush away the substances that form stones.
  • Drinking water can help prevent death from a heart attack – study findings show that women who drank more than five glasses of water a day were 41 percent less likely to die from a heart attack during the study period than those who drank fewer than two glasses.
  • Water can help prevent kidney and liver problems by helping to flush toxins that burden these vital organs.
  • Water is an important part of an exercise routine – water makes up a portion of your body’s fluids that help to cushion your joints through shock absorption. Drinking plenty of water before, during and after exercise can prevent dehydration and cramping.
 Healthy Weight Management
  • Children should be encouraged to drink water and to limit intake of beverages with added sugars, such as soft drinks, fruit juice drinks and sports drinks.
  • Substituting water for a regular soda (approximately 150 calories) every day, along with participating in moderate activity, could help promote healthy weight.
  • Drinking water can help satisfy the urge to nibble when you are trying to manage a healthy weight. Water has no calories and is the best bet overall when it comes to satisfying thirst and trying to cut the urge to snack.
PUR: PHARMACEUTICAL FILTRATION
The quality of drinking water in the United States has been making headlines more and more lately. In 2009, The Associated Press released an investigative report revealing that traces of pharmaceutical drugs were found in the drinking water supplies serving more than 51 million Americans. PUR water filtration products do far more than provide great-tasting water. PUR reduces many unwanted contaminants and pharmaceutical compounds to provide clean water right from your tap.*

HOW IS PUR HELPING?
PUR water filtration system reduces many of the pharmaceuticals identified in U.S. tap water.
The new research shows that PUR Water Filtration Systems (PUR) remove more than 99 percent of pharmaceutical compounds from America’s tap water using the PUR faucet filters and more than 96 percent with PUR pitchers. PUR effectively reduces five different categories of medication including:
  • Hormones: prednisone, prednisolone, progesterone, testosterone and cortisol
  • Antibiotics: ciprofloxacin, administered in tablet form to prevent certain infections caused by bacteria, as well as sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, which are administered intravenously to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections including pneumonia, and urinary tract and intestinal infections
  • Antidepressants: fluoxetine, prescribed to treat a variety of conditions, including depression and other mental/mood disorders
  • Anti-anxiety medication: meprobamate, a treatment used to relieve nervousness or tension that exceeds stress of everyday life
  • Painkillers: ibuprofen and naproxen
 DID YOU KNOW?
Procter & Gamble recently conducted a survey of Americans to gauge awareness and concern for pharmaceuticals in their drinking water. Surprisingly, nearly two-thirds of Americans surveyed (64 percent) say they are unaware that a wide range of pharmaceutical drugs have been detected in U.S. tap water. Other statistics include:
  • Amongst those consumers who were unaware that pharmaceutical drugs have been found in drinking water, 94 percent say they would be “concerned” to learn that tap water in their home had pharmaceuticals in it.
  • Additionally, of those Americans unaware of the possible presence of pharmaceuticals in their drinking water, 93 percent claim they would be driven to take action upon learning of this.
  • The survey also revealed that 37 percent think that bottled water is healthiest, which suggests that many are unaware that pharmaceuticals have also been found in some brands of bottled water.
  • Nearly half of Americans surveyed do not think there are pharmaceuticals in tap water, or they think it’s just either a “big-city” or “rural” issue.
  * Based on manufacturer testing of twelve pharmaceuticals. May not be present in all users’ water.

PUR: HELPING OUR PLANET
Sustainability, which protects the world for future generations, is important to PUR – both saving natural resources and protecting the environment. Clean water is a scarce and precious resource, but the average person wastes up to 30 gallons of water every day, which could contribute to the fact that 36 states will be facing water shortage problems by 2013.
PUR products are a smart choice for healthy families, a healthy planet and a healthy wallet:
  • PUR water filtration systems can help ensure that your family’s drinking water is clean and healthy because it is certified to claim reduction of many contaminants from tap water.
  • PUR helps save the planet by reducing the number of used plastic water bottles – up to 38 billion – that are discarded each year (Fast Company, 2007).
  • PUR also helps consumers save money, because PUR is cheaper than plastic bottled water. In the United States, consumers are spending billions of dollars on plastic bottled water every year.
 DID YOU KNOW?
Bottled Water
  • Making bottles to meet America’s demand for bottled water requires more than 1.5 million barrels of oil annually, enough to fuel some 100,000 U.S. cars for a year (Discovery Planet Green).
  • Only twenty-three percent of plastic water bottles used in the United States are recycled (Fast Company, 2007), resulting in 38 billion plastic water bottles being discarded every year.
 PUR Can Save Consumers Money
  • Each PUR pitcher can replace up to 2,000 16 oz. plastic bottles of water per year.*
  • A PUR faucet mount can deliver the equivalent of up to 3,200 16 oz. plastic bottles of water in one year.**
  • PUR filtered water is about one-tenth the cost of bottled water, which can lead to a savings of up to $600 per year.**
  • Refilling portable bottles with PUR water gives consumers an easy way to make a healthy choice while saving natural resources and reducing plastic.
* Reducing up to 2,000 water bottles per year based on comparing annual capacity of PŪR pitcher system and 5 refills based on filter life expectancy to corresponding number of 16 oz. water bottles.
** Reducing up to 3,200 water bottles and saving up to $600 per year based on comparing annual capacity and average price of PŪR faucet mount system and 3 refills based on filter life expectancy to corresponding number and average price of 16 oz. water bottles.

PUR & SUMMIT ON THE SUMMIT: KILIMANJARO
For years, PUR and the Children’s Safe Drinking Water (CSDW) Program have been working together to ensure that people around the world have clean water to drink – in the U.S. with PUR Water Filtration Systems and in developing countries with PUR water cleaning technology.  Because of this expertise, PUR was invited to join a new clean water charity initiative – SUMMIT ON THE SUMMIT: Kilimanjaro.  PUR is excited to partner with SUMMIT and bring major attention to the global water situation while providing even more people with access to clean drinking water.

WHAT IS SUMMIT ON THE SUMMIT: KILIMAJARO?
SUMMIT is a charity climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa, to raise awareness both about the need for clean drinking water, as well as funds for life-saving water programs in the developing world. The program was created by Grammy-nominated musician, Kenna, whose father nearly lost his life as a child after contracting a water-borne disease from drinking contaminated water.  The climb will take place in January 2010.
Why Climb for Clean Drinking Water?
  • About 4,000 children in developing countries die every day from illness and disease related to unsafe drinking water
  • Many children in developing countries don’t have access to clean, drinkable water in their communities
  • With no running water, many families have no choice but to drink from rivers and streams contaminated with bacteria, parasites and viruses, which contribute to a prevalence of diarrhea-related illnesses that cause widespread death
 Who’s Climbing?
Dr. Greg Allgood, Founder and Director of the CSDW Program, will be joining the climb as one of the SUMMIT team’s water authorities. He’ll lend his vast expertise to the cause and educate the climbers about the global water crisis throughout their journey.  Kenna has also enlisted a number of celebrities and cultural influencers to help shine the spotlight on this effort, including:
  • Jessica Biel – Actress (upcoming films Valentine’s Day and The A-Team)
  • Isabel Lucas – Actress (Transformers 2)
  • Emile Hirsh – Actor (Into the Wild, Milk)
  • Lupe Fiasco – Grammy-nominated musician
  • Jason Walsh – Renowned Trainer and Movement Specialist
  • Alexandra Cousteau – National Geographic Emerging Explorer
  • Kick Kennedy – Environmental activist and granddaughter of Robert Kennedy
  • Elizabeth Gore – Executive Director of Global Alliances for the United Nations Foundation
Additional celebrity climbers are expected to join the January ascent.  In addition to scaling Mt. Kilimanjaro, the climbers will be visiting a nearby village in Arusha, Tanzania where Dr. Allgood will show them, firsthand, the toll the global water crisis is taking on communities around the world, as well as the relief efforts being used to help.

JOIN THE CAUSE
  • A portion of the proceeds from the climb will go to benefit the CSDW Program.  Anyone in the U.S. can join the climb and the clean drinking water cause by purchasing a PŪR pitcher or faucet mount system. Purchasing a PUR system will donate a week’s worth of clean drinking water to children in need in the developing world*.
  • Donations from purchases of PUR pitchers and faucet mounts will go towards the CSDW goal of providing more than 4 billion liters of clean drinking water in the developing world from 2007-2012, preventing an estimated 160 million days of diarrheal illness and saving an estimated 20,000 lives.
  • Please visit PURWater.com for additional program details.

* For each PUR system purchase, PŪR will donate 10 cents to the CSDW fund.  For additional program details, visit PURWater.com or CSDW.org
