Are YOU singing "Back Home Again...in Indiana?"
Read more...The Stanley Cup Playoffs are a religious experience for Peachy Deegan. Truly the most wonderful time of the year (well, maybe equal with St. Patrick's Day), the Stanley Cup Playoffs epitomize the joy of being alive and show everyone that the good news in the world is indeed highlighted in the sports section of the newspaper, or more appropriately, the website. The only thing that Peachy can remember before about hockey attending hockey games herself is her family leaving her behind as a 3/4 year old as they took the route up 91 north when the Hartford Civic Center roof collapsed. When she was 5 she attended her first NHL game and she hasn't been the same since. With the Civic Center roof repaired, Peachy with her family spent the bulk of her childhood at hockey games cheering for the Whalers.
Although the beloved New York Rangers are not in the playoffs, we have learned over the years to appreciate the sport itself and not just the one team in blindless loyalty. As time has gone on, our original team was sold to North Carolina and of course we are loyal to the Rangers of course, doubly because their farm team is in Hartford. Especially since the mantra of Whom You Know is excellence appreciated, the Stanley Cup Playoffs are clearly the best there is. And the best right now are the Chicago Blackhawks and the Philadelphia Flyers. If you aren't on those teams right now, you are on the golf course!
We told you in Game One of the Western Conference Finals that Chicago would win:

They did.
If you go far enough back in the Hartford Courant archives, you will find a few articles written to the Editor of the Sports Section of why Joel Quenneville is the best coach around written by yours truly. We must admit, we say this with prior life experience: we knew he would be fabulous because he was one of the best as a defenseman in Hartford from the 1983-84 season, and as he put the "D" in Defense then he now puts the "Q" in quality as a coach. Possibly famous at the time for his striking resemblance to Magnum PI/Tom Selleck, Quenneville was a dominant force in both leadership and hockey skill in Hartford for many years and was an influence on Peachy's childhood. Quenneville won the Stanley Cup as an assistant coach with the Avalanche in 1996.
The fire that has been shown in the sheer determination of these players from the drop of the puck during the first period trumps any Superbowl or World Series we have ever seen: Americans please note the sport of hockey is far underrated in our country! In Connecticut when Peachy was growing up, there was not a professional MLB, NFL or NBA team, but there were the Hartford Whalers and if you went to those games you will understand! In fact, Howard Baldwin is in the process of resurrecting the franchise, which we will of course keep you apprised of in our Take a Trip to Connecticut column. Take a look at the popular facebook group:

In tonight's matchup, both the Flyers and the Blackhawks came to play in a big way. Facing off in Chicago's United Center on Madison Street (not to be confused with our Madison Avenue, which also was quite hopping today), it was the epitome of offensive intensity from the drop of the puck. Neck and neck throughout much of the game, the offense of both teams thoroughly challenged the respective defensive units. With Captain Mike Richards of Philadelphia leading the way along powerhouse Chris Pronger, they Flyers were dominant forces throughout much of the game, but not enough of it.
We believe, though we did watch recreationally and did not keep official stats, that the Flyers did not have a penalty during the game. If they had won, it would have been the first time since 1953 that a team won without a penalty. However, the penalty killing of the Blackhawks was brilliant and we must say we think this is a credit to their coach.
The most beautiful part of the game was executed with 8:10 to go in the 1st when on a breakaway, Dave Bolland scored for Chicago inbetween the Philadelphia goaltender's legs in a shorthanded situation. To us, this is more beautiful than Central Park on a day where there isn't a cloud in the sky, more beautiful than the most coveted dresses at Bergdorf Goodman for all the "it" girls, more beautiful than the Dow exceeding record highs...this is a Stanley Cup high. (In pottery class many years ago, Peachy made the Stanley Cup when the other students were making bowls and vases.)
Early on in the second when the game was tied at 3, it was clear that this was not to be a game of goaltending but to be a game of snipers that could put the puck in the net. In our opinion, the turning point came when Chicago was up 5-4 and the Philadelphia goalie was pulled, or it could have been when Chicago captured the lead which would be the final score of 6-5 with 11:35 to go in the third when patience with the puck paid off for the Blackhawks.
Our only complaints about the game would be that NBC used no women commentators (We will volunteer!) - men do work in women-dominated industries; just think of all of the men who influence the Beauty and Fashion industries! Also, we would have liked to have seen Lee DeWyze, current American Idol hailing from Chicago singing the National Anthem, but perhaps at another game of the series. All in all, we are SO HAPPY that Chicago won and we hate to say it, but we did tell you they were the best! Whom You Know is about the Best of Manhattan, but we are starting to think that Chicago is our kind of town...isn't that what Sinatra said!

It's not Who You Know, it's Whom You Know, and Peachy first met Joel Q. as a kid, and he is a class act through and through. We can speak to his successes for over 25 years. This is of course in red, a Blackhawks color.

Yves Rocher, The Creator of Botanical Beauty opened its first North American franchise in the West Edmonton Mall today. The 648 square foot store called The Atelier of Botanical Beauty, is located on floor one of the mall near the 44 door entrance. “We are incredibly excited for both the Brand and our franchisee because this represents a real milestone for Yves Rocher globally and a real opportunity for Oksana Pachine and her partner Anna Stsibaylo,” says RenĂ© Desmarais, CEO of Yves Rocher North America Inc. The Yves Rocher Group is a global beauty leader, ranked in the top 15 beauty brands in sales and volume, with 3.2 billion USD in sales and one of the few large, family-owned, beauty-businesses in the world. “We were saddened to lose the founder, Mr. Yves Rocher, right before the start of the new year but pleased that the Brand is continuing on the path of global expansion laid-out by Mr. Rocher,” he adds. The opening coincides with the Brand’s 50th anniversary which is being celebrated this year.
Yves Rocher has been operating in North America since the mid-eighties running a direct mail business in Canada and the United States and a store business in Canada. Later, in 2005, it launched an Internet sales site as well. While both the direct mail and Internet business service both Canada and the United States, the store business remained regional, operating close to 70 stores in Eastern Canada with locations in Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick. Last year, with the global launch of the new Atelier store concept, the company announced that it would be offering franchises across Canada to help with its on-going expansion. The company’s goal is to introduce franchising in the U.S. in the next few years.
The Canadian store business was somewhat of an anomaly as globally close to 75% of the 1,800 store chain is franchised. “We wanted to keep our stores corporate until we had the right formula for the North American market,” says RenĂ© Desmarais. “With The Atelier of Botanical Beauty we know we have the right concept.” Launched in May of last year, the Atelier is delivering an average +15% sales increase versus the previous store concept.
The Atelier is a physical representation of the Brand. The main display table is a copy of the one
Mr. Yves Rocher used in his attic laboratory in La Gacilly, France when he first started the company. A large visual of one of Yves Rocher’s organic fields is front and centre at the cash. The company organically cultivates about 33% of the raw plant material it needs for its global production. The rest is ethically sourced around the world, depending on the actives needed in a product. Finally emblematic visuals of women and plants recall the Brand’s proximity to women and the fact that all its products are botanically-based.
“I am so happy to be the first franchisee in Canada,” says Oksana Pachine. “I’ve known Yves Rocher for many years because it is a very popular brand in Russia. What I like is its plant-based products and its focus on the environment and sustainable development. As franchisees we also receive very targeted marketing and communications support,” she adds. Yves Rocher is known world-wide as a highly specialized direct marketing company, which contributes to its success in all of its sales channels. “When you purchase an Yves Rocher franchise you always benefit from tremendous corporate support such as marketing and communications tools, training and data sharing, says StĂ©phane Duval, Director, Stores, Yves Rocher North America Inc. “Customers who sign up to our rewards program receive between 12 to15 special offers a year with additional discounts, free products, gifts and of course our expert beauty advice. On average between 18%-30% of customers come back with their offer,” says Duval. “That’s on top of walk-in customers,” he adds. In Canada, more than 90% of Yves Rocher store customers have signed up to the rewards program.
Yves Rocher plans to franchise more than ten locations before the end of the year and has interested parties for franchises from Halifax to Vancouver.
Yves Rocher is The Creator of Botanical Beauty. Yves Rocher’s Botanical Beauty is a unique beauty experience that offers greater performance, enjoyment and respect. It’s a botanical and scientific approach that uses the power of plants to create highly effective skincare and body care products. It’s also beauty that’s generous, that conveys sensations: colours, textures, scents. It allows you to travel through time, across cultures and around the world thanks to its perfumes and makeup. It’s ethical beauty that respects women and the environment from the plant to the skin.
It’s by being at once Grower, Manufacturer and Distributor since 1959 and therefore mastering the entirety of the chain that Yves Rocher is able to offer quality products at an accessible price to all women. In North America, the company distributes its products through its sales channels including more than 1,800 stores and spas, its catalogue, the Green Book of Beauty distributed in 90 countries and its online sales sites. Whom You Know has recommended many Yves Rocher products and they are one of our favorite brands!
Earthy Peachy is always trying to come up with some great Gotham Gadgets to make your life better, and what could be more important than clean water? We are pleased with the Pur Water Filtration System that we have been testing. Its superior water quality is just what you need to hydrate your body and eliminate plastic water bottles from your daily routine. Not only is this fabulous for your home, but it is equally useful at the office. The Water Filtration System is even better than the pitcher because you have to fill it less often and when you have guests or if you live in a large household (uncommon in Manhattan), more water is available for the thirsty masses (!) which is especially important during the incoming summertime!
WHY PUR FILTERED WATER?
Water is the body’s principal chemical component and every system in the body depends on it to function properly. In fact, 60-70 percent of your body is composed of water. Water provides life sustaining nourishment for your skin, hair, muscles and brain, which is why it is so important that the water you drink be the absolute best quality. As our water infrastructures age, we’re learning our tap water is not as clean as it could be. In fact, several major U.S. cities still rely on water pipes that were installed more than 100 years ago. While the contaminants or other substances removed or reduced by PUR water filters are not necessarily in all users’ water, by-products from chlorine, along with lead, sometimes show up in our tap water in addition to agricultural pollutants, heavy metals, sediment, pharmaceuticals and microbial cysts.
DID YOU KNOW?
Water Filtration:
PUR Water Filtration products do far more than provide great-tasting water. PUR reduces many unwanted contaminants to provide clean water right from your tap.
