The Skin Cancer Foundation’s second annual A Night the Stars Shine On event brought New York’s social and philanthropic worlds together for a special evening of music and cocktails at the Central Park Zoo on Tuesday, June 28. Notable guests included Extra host and skin cancer survivor Jerry Penacoli and Project Runwaypast contestants Kevin Christiana (season 4), Stephen “Suede” Baum (season 5) and Casanova (season 8).

Event co-chairs Mindy Gorman and Elizabeth Robins, Esq. created a unique event for guests with the help of a dedicated group of volunteers. The event committee included Nathalie Baranyk, Andrea Beecher, Julie Bensman, Anne Botica, Trisha Biddle, Eva Fahler, Mia Fahler, Hollei Graves, Leena Gurevich, Cathy Guterman, Kelly Hoey, Jessica J. Krant, MD, MPH, Monique Moore, Scott Neher, Nora Onorato, Andrew Sarnoff, Deborah S. Sarnoff, MD, Ian Shapolsky and Jesse Smiley.

Guests were treated to a special performance by the Central Park Zoo sea lions, as well as visits to the Rainforest Exhibit and the Penguin House. The evening offered a unique opportunity to socialize and network at one of New York City’s most charming landmark venues.  This is one of the best organizations we cover because of their heartfelt, sincere dedication to their cause and the friendly crowd that they always attract.

"First and foremost, I want to urge everyone to have their skin checked by a dermatologist who specializes in skin cancer and knows what it looks like and I will scream it from the top of a mountain, because of what I went through nine months ago with melanoma stage 3 diagnosis, two surgeries, a lot of treatments..." Jerry Penacoli of Extra tells Peachy Deegan.  We are pleased to say Jerry has defeated skin cancer!  "Now that I am cancer-free I want to make more people aware of self-examination, dermatologist examinations, and the importance of using sunscreens.  You hear it all the time, but people don't do it!"

We asked him what his favorite sunscreen and he said anything SPF 50 or over!
