Peachy Picks Canyon Road

Peachy Deegan has raised crabcake connoisseurship to an art form.
Now that she knows what a Quesadilla with lump fresh crab meat and roasted poblano peppers is, she wants to repeat the crab function with this new art form.   Totally to die for, this was her favorite aspect of Canyon Road thanks to the dynamic talents of Executive Chef Ruperto Ramirez, who has been there for an impressive eighteen consecutive years.

Canyon Road was first featured in Terrific Takeout:

It totally was, so it graduated to Tasty Tidbits:
We are pleased to announce that it has soundly graduated to Peachy's Picks.  Cheers to that!  The red sangria was lovely, and Peachy Deegan was really impressed by the blood orange mojito.  Before she had this one at Canyon Road, she did not like mojitos, so from now on the only mojitos  Peachy will be drinking will be from Canyon Road...unless they start serving The Peachy Deegan!  Then she'll just have one in each hand...

Chef Ramirez made amazing guacamole right in front of us which was a total party.
Before this dinner review, Peachy could honestly say she was not really a fan of Mexican food.
However, after this dinner review, she cannot get enough.
Canyon Road Mexican food is the best we've had in Manhattan.
Every single dish we tried was stellar.
In addition to Peachy's newfound aforementioned crab love, she also is enamored of the Grilled Swordfish Steak with roasted corn and sauteed spinach, topped with ranchero and chipotle salsas.  So beautiful, every bite was perfection to savor and enjoy, and the corn was among the best we've ever had as well.

The web Ruperto spins on top of the Swordfish beats Spiderman we surmise, though we haven't reviewed Spiderman yet as Peachy only wants to go if she can sit next to Bono during it...

Next we tried the Tacos al Carbon: hangar steak with onions, peppers, and jalapeno.
Again, they were the best tacos ever.
True fact: Peachy dreamt about them after she ate them, so she ate the leftovers for breakfast the next day.
They were THAT good.
Remember, this is the girl that is not wild about Mexican food.
The chocolate souffle cake had her name on it!
And they even had Irish coffee with Jameson, so they are not 100% Mexican and you know who appreciates that Irish percentage the most.
Ajejandro Ramirez  was a total peach all evening as a waiter and Peachy was thrilled to finally meet someone with a name that she could sing the Lady Gaga song to!
Just as excellent as the whole meal was the sparkling warm personality of Executive Chef Ruperto Ramirez who sipped some coffee with us during dessert.

Originally from Mexico, Ruperto and now his entire family live here in New York.
He even played catch with his son on Father's Day for old times' sake.
When you go to Canyon Road definitely say hello to him he is a complete peach.
They all are-we knew it from the start with General Manager Diane Ashe.
Even the music was phenomenally upbeat and tasteful, and you only need to go to New York Notes to see who is Ms. Picky about music with the small number of entries in that column.
Don't listen to only Peachy though.

Our esteemed panelist adds:
If you’re in the mood for classic Mexican fare with a slight Santa Fe flair, head straight to Canyon Ranch! Do not pass Go, do not collect $200 (well, actually, if you have the opportunity to pick up $200 on the way, who am I to stop you?!), just get there as soon as you can! From the moment you step into this intimate yet airy Upper East Side establishment, you’ll feel as if you’ve been transported to a small, Western town. The vibe is relaxed and comfortable, and the staff is very welcoming, setting the tone for a highly enjoyable meal! As we perused our menus, I sipped upon a superb mango mojito, and instantly felt the cares of the day slip away. Although there were many tempting options, I absolutely had to try the Guacamole en Molcajete, which is custom-prepared tableside by executive chef Ruperto Ramirez. I asked for mine to be prepared spicy, so extra jalapeños and Tabasco sauce went in, along with fresh avocado, red onions, cilantro, lime juice, and diced tomatoes. Well, as soon as I got to taste the finished result, it was love at first bite. Accompanied by fresh tortilla chips, the guacamole was a perfect way to start the meal! For my main course, I opted for the Marinated Santa Fe Chicken Fajitas.
The chicken was served with onions and peppers in a sizzling skillet, and accompanied by a “fixins” plate of guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo, and fresh flour tortillas, in addition to black beans and Mexican rice. It was 100% delicious, and my only regret is that I’d filled up so much on the guacamole, I didn’t have room for more fajitas! I did, however, find room for the two special dishes that Chef Ramierez sent out for us to try, which were both major hits. The first, which is on the regular menu, was the Slowly Roasted Duck Burrito with black beans and homemade mole poblano sauce. I couldn’t get over how good this was – the duck was extremely tender and incredibly tasty, and the mole poblano sauce was to die for.

In addition to the duck burrito, Chef Ramirez also sent out Tacos al Carbon, a specialty of his which is not on the everyday menu. In this dish, soft corn tortillas are filled with a mixture of tender and delectable hangar steak, onions, peppers, and melted cheese. It is a fabulous take on the classic taco, and definitely worth asking for if you go to Canyon Ranch! At the recommendation of our waiter, Alejandro, I switched to a pomegranate mojito for the main course, and found this just as tasty as the mango mojito, if not more so! After our main courses, although I was stuffed to the gills, I simply couldn’t resist trying the Sopapilla con Banana for dessert. Puffed cinnamon dough pastry served with caramel & cinnamon sautéed bananas and vanilla ice cream just sounded too yummy to pass up! And, indeed, the dessert lived up to its enticing description. It was sweet but not cloyingly so, and the perfect ending to a fantastic meal. Overall, it was a stellar dinner, and I unreservedly recommend Canyon Ranch to anyone looking for a fresh and delicious Mexican meal!
