Terrific Takeout: Lexington Candy Shop

It's not who you know, it's Whom You Know and now we know John Philis-a total peach, one of two owners of the Lexington Candy Shop.  John's grandfather started this gem on the Upper East side in 1925-John has been there since 1980- and if you have not had a Coca-Cola Float made by him with their real fountain soda, one of only two places that we know of in Manhattan that have one-you simply have not lived.  We had one once years ago and the memory of it stayed with Peachy and inspired her to do this particular review.  It is just as excellent the second time and we hope not to let that much more time pass before her third!

This will certainly put a smile on your face.
This puts every other ice cream soda you've ever had to shame because of the history, care, and timeless authenticity that goes into it.  Do not let another New York minute go by without experiencing this soda, and first read the history of this fantastic place and its philosophy which we love:
You know in takeout we always order a green salad, and John suggested the Traditional Country Greek salad.  Dressed appropriately this was just as good as greek salads we've had at Greek places.
One of the best selling sandwiches at the Lexington Candy Shop is the Lexington Special.  If you are not a regular, we'll inform you that the Lexington Special is one whopper of a sandwich: Roast Beef, Fried Egg, Bacon and American cheese (Land O Lakes) grace a double decker stack of toast and will bring you back to a time when life was simpler and perhaps the Mad Men were walking down Lexington to order this back then instead of eating it on tv on Sunday nights.
Finally, we tried some fantastic angus sliders.  Like both the Greek Salad and the Lexington Special, these babies are announced with a star on the menu as they are among the favorites and we can see why.  We opted for mozzarella cheese on top and the bread they use is from Orwasher's Bakery, and they of course use certified Angus Beef.  After all of this fantastic American food, at the end you may need one more Coke float...can you tell someone is addicted?  Lexington Candy Shop is Terrific Takeout and also a New York Landmark to us!  We'll have to tell our friend Peggy Breen....
