ORACLE TEAM USA and Artemis Racing will have new crew on board at the Louis Vuitton America's Cup World Series in New York.

Racing is scheduled on May 7-8.

On Wednesday, ORACLE TEAM USA announced that former college standout sailor Matt Cassidy was on track make his debut with the race crew in New York.

“It’s very exciting to think I could be getting into an official race after all this time sailing with the guys in Bermuda,” Cassidy said. “The main difference in New York compared to what we’re doing here in Bermuda is that these races count. We want to win. It’s not testing; it’s not practice. Every race we sail in the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series counts, so you have to perform.

“I sailed on the non-foiling AC45 boats back when I tried out with the team in 2014, but that’s the closest I’ve been to sailing on one of these boats. So I’ve been looking at a lot of video footage and talking to the guys, getting help from our coach, but at a certain point you just need to get out there and get into it.”

Similarly, Artemis Racing has added new blood to its New York race crew.

Following a disappointing result in Oman, the Swedish team will be looking for an improved performance and a podium finish in the Big Apple, and is pleased to announce that Christian Kamp will make his debut on the foiling AC45F race boats.

“I’m excited to be joining the World Series team," Kamp said. "I’ve been wanting to go for a long time and I’m happy to get the opportunity now.

"We’ve had a few changes in the crew since the last event, just one actual crew change but new positions for a few people. I am sliding into the spot as trimmer where I am very comfortable. It will be a first time for me racing these foiling AC45 World Series boats, but I know they are a lot more like normal yacht racing in terms of the fleet racing format, the compressed courses, boundaries, and having to make quick decisions.”

The challenge for both teams is the limited training time on the AC45F race boats. Teams are restricted from arriveing early at a venue to train. This means new crew can only get time on the boat on the Friday practice races, or Thursday VIP or media sails.

It's a big ask - even for professionals.

Be sure to tune in on May 7-8 to see how they fare!
