Tucked away on Stone Street closer to the Bowling Green Stop on the subway, Nebraska Steakhouse is a sweet small spot in Downtown Manhattan.
It was first featured in Terrific Takeout:
We were delighted to meet owner Mona Muresan on our initial visit, however, we missed her this second time; it was one time Peachy was a little late because the subway broke down when she was on it.  We were delighted with the wine selection, and Peachy Deegan is a fan of robust cabernets.
Mona's Chili is simply outstanding and there were no sophomore acts here!  It was just as wonderful as the first time and the difference is the filet mignon tips that make it great.  Black, beans, onions, peppers and beaucoup de spices make this extraordinary.  This was Peachy's favorite part of dinner.
Mona is a bodybuilder and is therefore much more health-conscious than many restaurant owners we've encountered thus far!  We love that there are six salad selections to choose from.  Peachy thinks mozzarella is a vegetable (what can she say; she's influenced by Gianfranco Sorrentino) so she chose the Fresh Mozzarella, Basil and Tomato salad.  Both sundried tomatoes and fresh tomatoes came to this lovely plate.
This merlot paired well with the New York Strip Steak that Peachy chose for her entree.
The 17 oz. Boneless Hand-picked Prime Strip Steak arrived medium as we asked and Mike the waiter did a perfect job all evening; he's a veteran at this venue since 2000. He's got a great personality and is quite attentive to detail.
You can't go wrong with smashing roasted garlic mashed potatoes and sauteed asparagus as sides!
Tartufo made a delectable closing number!
Our esteemed panelist adds:
Here'a a twist: a steakhouse with a Health and Wellness Menu! Bring your health conscious friends to the Nebraska Steakhouse, and be surprised. It's not all about empty carbs, heavy meals and cowboy-sized steaks. The steaks are here, to be sure, but the Nebraska Steakhouse is owned by Mona, a serious contender in the body-building field. The warmth of the wood paneled interior brings back Old New York, so your mood is set as soon as you enter the bevelled-glass doors. It's the perfect place for a whiskey fest, with a bar to rival anything in the British Isles, and lots of wonderful single malts in view. We started with a Glenmorangie 10 year old Single Malt because. Well, it was cold outside. Have your Scotch neat? Perfect!
There's already some crusty bread at the table, so savor your aperitif, and ponder the menu. The wait staff are a well-oiled machine, and seamlessly bring , take, clear, listen, and bring some more to the table. That alone is a treat in any a New York City restaurant.
Try the Clams Casino. In all the years I've been eating this dish, I've never had quite such a tender mouthful of clams. They will melt in your mouth, dusted in their crunchy buttery topping. And do try the smoked trout. If you're a fan, you'll be in love with the chunky filets.
If you've never tried this alternative to the perennial salmon, trout is a welcome mouthful of savory. It's here in several forms, so perhaps try the salad which comes with a piquant lemon sauce that lends a touch of sweet.
For an entree, we tried the roasted Lemon Chicken, which comes in sections rolled around the bone, covered in a garlic, oregano and lemon sauce. The added wine in the sauce smells delicious, and builds an added layer of flavor to this chichen dish. For Wall Streeters, the Nebraska Steakhouse must be on the list of "gotta-go" in every office. Downtown, historical, surrounded by the beating heart of New York City economy, it's a place to know about, and share.
