MOVERS AND SHAKERS: Dr. Lewis M. Feder, M.D., Cosmetic and Dermatologic Surgeon

Lewis M. Feder, M.D. is the prominent New York City cosmetic plastic surgeon and aesthetic dermatologist whose pioneering techniques have received universal acclaim. His dynamic specialties include facial and body rejuvenation, facial resurfacing, and total body liposculpture. As a full-service physician in practice for over twenty years, Dr. Feder performs corrective procedures for all beauty, aesthetic and cosmetic surgical needs at his Fifth Avenue offices and on-premise operating facility. Peachy Deegan met our latest Mover and Shaker under the tent during Fashion Week!

At the forefront of multiple rejuvenation procedures, Dr. Feder was the first Fifth Avenue signphysician on the East Coast to use collagen implants to help restore contour, elasticity, and firmness to the skin. Now, as one of the first physicians to perform live fat cell grafting, which he calls micro-lipo-foundation, the doctor restores youthfulness to the face and body. Using this procedure, he has successfully treated over five thousand patients. Employing the patient's own fibrofatty tissues, he layers the live fat cells to replace and correct soft tissue defects through micro-implantation throughout the body, with this trademarked technique.

For facial resurfacing, Dr. Feder uses laser therapy or his trademarked chemodermabrasion, a surgical breakthrough hailed internationally. Chemodermabrasion combines chemical peeling with dermabrasion in one procedure to achieve significantly greater benefits than either procedure alone. Dr. Feder has performed more than three thousand facial resurfacings for acne, scarring, sun damage and facial rejuvenation, using both laser or chemodermabrasion.

He is a graduate of Hobart College and New York Medical College. He then did residencies in the U.S. Public Health Service Hospitals and New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, NYC. He also did many fellowships in cosmetic plastic surgery worldwide, including with his mentor, Dr. Pierre Fournier, in Paris, the founder and inventor of syringe-liposculpture. He also worked with Dr. Giorgio Fischer of Rome, Italy - the inventor of liposuction. Recently, Dr. Feder worked with Dr. Marlen Sulamanidze in Moscow, Russia, where Dr. Feder taught his micro-lipo-foundation technique to a group of cosmetic surgeons. Dr. Sulamanidze invented the APTOS® Thread Facial Technique, which Dr. Feder now also uses and is the first doctor in the United States to use this breakthrough procedure. Dr. Feder is a cosmetic surgery consultant to Ethicon, Inc., a division of Johnson & Johnson for new product development and technical procedures.

Here's what Dr. Feder had to say to Peachy Deegan!

Peachy Deegan: How did you first become interested in cosmetic surgery?
Dr. Lewis Feder: I have always been interested in beauty, aethetics, and appearance medicine. It was a natural for me to go into this field.

What is the most popular procedure requested?
Liposculpture is the most common-a natural dynamic sculpting of the body doing it by hand by the syringe. Dr. Fournier of Paris invented this technique and I have worked with him to refine and perfect it. The Tumescent Technique is used prior to the liposculpture with a special table that addresses the force of gravity so you can see the body before, during and after surgery. Local anethesia is used so the patient is in twilight sleep.

What do you do when someone asks for a procedure that you think is not a great idea for them?
I tell them! Most people are pretty accurate. This almost never happens....

What is the funniest thing(s) that has happened to you in your medical career?
People give me all kinds of beautiful gifts-a cruise vacation which was nice...but nothing too funny. Most patients are very good friends!

Is there any such thing as someone having too much cosmetic surgery?
Yes-a doctor has to know the word no! The doctor should know...a regular person wouldn't necessarily know. I've been practicing for twenty years.

What is most rewarding about being a cosmetic surgeon?
Making people happy and making them look as good as possible at any age.

What is your favorite procedure to perform and why?
My favorite to perform is the face fill. This is using the body's own fat to fill in the face-a special technique that makes one twenty years younger in one hour. I do this without cutting, pulling, bleeding or down time. I have performed 2,000 of them!

Are there minimum and maximum ages for cosmetic surgery?
Age is important if you're a wine or a cheese but there no age barriers otherwise. A family would need to approve work done on anyone under age 18.

What is your favorite place to be in NYC?
Lincoln Center is just so fabulous-The Met Avery Fisher Hall, just love it over there.

What is your favorite shop?
Zegna men's clothing or Saks 5th ave

What is your favorite drink?
Very nice Italian or French red wine- Merlot

What is your favorite restaurant?
Le Cirque or 8 1/2 ON 57 ST [Peachy agrees with you on Le Cirque! See recent review on Whom You Know]

What is your favorite NYC book?
Bonfire of the Vanities

What is your favorite thing to do in NYC that you can do nowhere else?
You can walk everywhere in NYC!

What do you think is most underrated and overrated here?
Underrated: The services-police, firemen. The safety! How effective and quiet the services are. Overrated: People overrate the sophistication of New Yorkers
