BIG APPLE BUSINESS: Sylvia Weinstock Cakes

While on a family ski trip to Hunter Mountain, Ms. Weinstock was introduced to retired pastry chef George Keller. He took her on as an apprentice and it wasn't long before she was supplying desserts to Hunter area restaurants every weekend while her husband and three daughters skied. Ms. Weinstock created a wedding cake for her daughter's friend, who was getting married. The young woman worked in a take-out food shop and put the cake on display in the window. A chef, who worked for the then premier society caterer in New York City, Donald Bruce White, inquired where the cake came from, and Ms. Weinstock started getting cake orders from the caterer each weekend. Then orders began coming in from women who attended the catered receptions, and the rest is history. All Sylvia Weinstock Cakes are custom designed and created according to the specifications of her clients. Not only do the cakes look beautiful, they taste delicious, because only the best available ingredients are used. Any type of cake can be made by request. Sylvia Weinstock’s cakes have been star attractions at the weddings of Donald Trump, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Michael Douglas, Liza Minelli, Bryant Gumbell and even the Saudi Royal Family.

Whom You Know recently met Sylvia at Williams-Sonoma [see below article] and thinks she is absolutely outstanding!

Commentary from Sylvia:
I always believed in using the best ingredients. One cannot make a filet mignon from stew meat. I love working with the best ingredients and turning out the best possible product. I love fresh lemon and raspberry in a butter cake but my husband loves our chocolate cake with chocolate mousse and blood orange filling.
I love to entertain at home and enjoy cooking, setting a table and sharing good food and wine with guests. I enjoy wine but my favorite is vodka. Any brand will do. I have many favorite restaurants Nobu for Japanese, City Hall and Country for American food, Centrillo for Mexican, Aqua for Italian, All of which I try at times to cook at home. I do not like precious food. I like pure food, not too fussy, clean , fresh and tasty. In my free time, if there is any, I enjoy reading, relaxing on my deck at home, walking the city streets etc.
