Gracious Galleries: Bonni Benrubi Gallery

Bonni Benrubi Gallery was founded in 1987 on the upper east side of New York City. The gallery has always specialized in photographs only and continues to do so to this day. They focus on 20th century and contemporary photography. The stable of artists includes established blue chip masters such as Andreas Feininger and Louis Stettner - two American icons of the medium. The contemporary stable includes Massimo Vitali, known for his scenes of people at leisure in large format color, Simon Norfolk, a documenter of the ravages of war and our strife in the world, Abelardo Morell, a Cuban immigrant who has gone on to photograph the ordinary in life and made it extraordinary using various techniques such as camera obscura, cliche verre and photograms. Additionally, the gallery represents younger artists such as Matthew Pillsbury, whose time lapsed images are made with an 8 x 10" camera and result in beautiful and compelling narratives about how time moves and the French artist Karine Laval , whose color palette and compositions are both edgy and evocative at the same time.

Many of the artists in the gallery have monographs and deep critical acclaim. All of the the artists are in museum collections and international private collections. The gallery is involved with lending works to exhibitions all over the world and their clientele is international and diverse extending to the Middle East, Latin America, Europe, Australia, and further. They are loyal to their artists and to their clients.

The Bonni Benrubi Gallery looks at new work on the first Thursday of every month - one drops off their work and picks it up the next day. Ms. Benrubi has reviewed and curated many shows outside of the gallery and feels strongly that this is part of giving back. The gallery often donates work for charity auctions.

The gallery moved to the Fuller Building at 41 East 57th five years ago to an expanded space and facility. There are 6 people working at the gallery . The hours that they are open are Tuesday through Saturday from 10AM to 6PM.
