MOVERS AND SHAKERS: Consuelo Costin, Singer, Actor, Writer and Participant in The Legacy Group and Sohomuse.com

CONSUELO COSTIN

Consuelo Costin is an eighth generation descendant of Cornelius Vanderbilt.

She is also an actress and singer who began her career in music at the age of 15 studying at La Studio Brittanica in Florence. Highlights from her career have included performing alongside Joe Cocker at the Royal Albert Hall and a soon-to-be released full-length album from her band Costin. As a songwriter and performer, her music has been featured on shows like the WB miniseries “Beach Girls” and in commercials for Pantene. She has also performed on MTV2 and regularly tours with Costin.

In addition to her artistic work as a singer and actress, Consuelo is launching a website called Sohomuse.com. The site will serve as a social network where users can facilitate the exchange of ideas and artwork.

Consuelo is the spokesperson for the Ovarian Cancer Coalition of Greater California and currently serves as the organization’s Vice President. She has selected the national Ovarian Cancer Research Fund as her designated charity for the Legacy Group. The highly respected organization founded in 1994 and subsequently led by the late Liz Tilberis, the beloved editor-in-chief of Harpers Bazaar. Since her death in 1999, the Fund has received major support from the fashion, beauty, and entertainment industries. We are pleased to present her as our latest Mover and Shaker!

Peachy Deegan interviewed Consuelo Costin for Whom You Know.

Peachy Deegan: What aspects of Florence motivated you to pursue your career in the arts?
Consuelo Costin: Everything in Florence was a work of Art - the landscapes, the architecture, the fashion and the food. I was hooked in ten seconds flat. While I had been singing since I was eleven, it was in Florence where I started performing live in night clubs around the city.

Of all of your artistic pursuits, which do you enjoy the most and why?
It's tough to choose between Singing, Acting and Writing. They all enable me to express myself in different ways. If I had to pick one it would have to be acting, because it allows me to escape into the worlds of the different characters.

What would surprise people about being a Vanderbilt?
Probably that in spite of my heritage, I have worked every dead end job imaginable.... From Spraying bowling shoes to scrubbing toilets in the kinds of the places my ancestors were treated like royalty.

What inspired you to help start The Legacy Group?
I have been passionate about various different Ovarian Cancer related charity organizations ever since my mother was diagnosed with stage 3c Ovarian Cancer. The Legacy group is the perfect venture for me to continue my fight to find a cure.

What aspects of your personal style do you hope to incorporate into The Legacy Group products?
I have always taken very good care of my skin and consistently try to look my best, whether I am on the red carpet or at a Saturday afternoon barbecue. I am looking for affordable products that people can use or wear on a daily basis to make them feel good about themselves.

What other people do you think would be great to join The Legacy Group in the future?
I think beyond just recognizable names, anyone who is out there creating a legacy of giving back and helping to make the world a better place is a good candidate.

How is Sohomuse going?
We have only just launched our beta version. So far the response has been overwhelmingly positive. As the first 3D online social and business networking website for artists, I am very proud and very excited about the future of WWW.SOHOMUSE.COM

Underrated would be the people. They often get a bad wrap for being rude, but I'm addicted to their realness. Overrated is probably the pizza parlors. They all say "world famous", but I've never heard of most of them... And I love a good New York pizza.
