The Tribeca Film Festival today announced ten contemporary artists who will donate pieces to the Festival's 2009 Artist Awards Program sponsored by CHANEL. A work of art from each participating artist will be presented to a filmmaker whose film is selected as the winner in its respective category. The artists are some of the industry's most vibrant: Stephen Hannock, Clifford Ross, Robert Mangold, Hank Willis Thomas, Fritz Chestnut, Mickalene Thomas, Kalup Linzy, Tom Slaughter, SunTek Chung and David Salle. Clifford Ross will participate for a fourth year, and Steven Hannock will continue his participation for the eighth consecutive year. The Tribeca Film Festival, presented by founding sponsor American Express, takes place April 22 – May 3, 2009.

With art playing an integral role in CHANEL’s history, it is an honor for CHANEL to have the opportunity to support the Tribeca Film Festival and celebrate the artists of this year and years past. "CHANEL is incredibly pleased to continue its support of the Artist Program for the fourth consecutive year” says CHANEL Global CEO, Maureen Chiquet. “Just as Coco Chanel was a patron and friend of many emerging and well-known artists of her time, we are proud to continue this tradition through the Festival."

The artwork – consisting of paintings, prints and collages – will be publicly exhibited for the first time at the CHANEL Boutique in SoHo (139 Spring St.), from April 16th-29th, between the hours of 11-7 Monday-Saturday and 12-6 on Sunday, where New Yorkers and festival-goers can view the works before they are awarded at the Tribeca Film Festival awards ceremony on April 30.
The Tribeca Film Festival Artist Awards Program sponsored by CHANEL was created by Festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal to celebrate New York artists and to honor lower Manhattan after the attacks of September 11, 2001.

“The Artist Awards Program demonstrates the importance of artists supporting each other across all mediums,” said Jane Rosenthal, co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival. “We are so pleased to have these ten respected artists continue the tradition of past participants who have not only supported the Festival but most importantly the filmmakers at Tribeca. We thank CHANEL for their dedication to the arts and are excited that the works will be on display in the CHANEL store for all to see during the Festival.”

“The Tribeca Film Festival is a classic New York City turn-on. It’s a vital and exciting brew of film and video from around the world - a launching pad for what will come next. TFF creates a cultural ferment that fuels everyone who comes in contact with it,” said artist Clifford Ross.

Her depictions of African American women embody alternate notions of black female identity while exploring romanticized ideals of femininity, celebrity and sexuality. Thomas stages her figures amid a riot of pattern and color, creating a scene evocative of the Blaxploitation films and wood-paneled rec rooms of her 1970’s childhood. Thomas earned her MFA from Yale University in 2002 and, in 2002-2003, participated in the Artist-in-Residence program at the Studio Museum in Harlem.
