NIGHTLIGHT and Take a Trip to London: Coutts London Jewellery Week 2009

Peachy Deegan just loves jewellry, and since Jewellry Week does not happen in Manhattan, she went to it in London! Thank goodness for Coutts London Jewellery Week.

The award winning Coutts London Jewellery Week returned for a second year from 8-14 June 2009, once again bringing together the capital’s top jewellery talent for a week-long celebration. Organised by the City Fringe Partnership with funding from the London Development Agency (LDA), the week featured big name designers such as Stephen Webster and Shaun Leane, whose pieces are worn by the likes of Christina Aguilera, David Bowie and Liv Tyler. They stood alongside established retailers and emerging jewellery-makers like Amanda Brighton tempting the consumer with a totally unique visitor experience.

Visitors were able to uncover their own “hidden gems” during the week. From a city-wide ‘treasure hunt’ with prizes from top jewellers, to a ‘museum trail’ which invited visitors to explore the capital’s leading museums to find out more about jewellery and the role it has played throughout history, jewellery-making classes, open studios, seminars (such as The Goldsmiths’ Company’s Day of Knowledge) competitions and exhibitions, Coutts London Jewellery Week dazzled the consumer with an array of events from the spectacular to the educative.

Treasure, an exhibition of forty of the city’s hottest new designers, held last year at the Tower of London, was attended by Peachy Deegan in Covent Garden and Whom You Know thought it was quite well-done. A fabulous exhibition of designers at The Flower Cellars made for a sparkling evening of high-class sparkle, complete with champagne. Surely EVERYONE in Manhattan wishes they went, and we wish even more that we would do it ourselves over here.

Another event, Creation II, The Goldsmiths’ Company’s summer exhibition was also held which showcased the creative talent of 12 of the country’s most distinguished contemporary artist jewellers, including screening behind-the-scenes documentaries made by award-winning filmmaker Paul Watson.

Elsewhere, Hatton Garden – London’s historic jewellery quarter – lived up to its name when it was transformed into a bejewelled, verdant Eden, where visitors got an exciting insight into the workshops of some of the country’s top jewellery talent. And Notting Hill boutique Assya offered expert advice on selecting the right precious and semi-precious stones to create beautifully bespoke pieces of fashion jewellery.

Sarah Deaves, Chief Executive of Coutts & Co commented: “Coutts is absolutely thrilled to be the principal sponsor of London Jewellery Week for the second year running, once again reinforcing our commitment to the world of contemporary art and design. Our fantastic line up for Coutts London Jewellery Week 2009 will not disappoint and we guarantee another dazzling week of events that should not be missed.”

Sarah Purvis, Deputy Director of the City Fringe Partnership, said: “2009 Coutts London Jewellery Week promises to be a fantastic consumer-focused event, showcasing London’s jewellery talent and drawing visitors to the capital.”
