American Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture at Sotheby's on December 3rd

Yesterday’s sale of American Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture at Sotheby’s brought $25,086,250, above the pre-sale estimate of $16/23 million. The sale was 91.3% sold by value and 75.2% sold by lot.

Dara Mitchell, Director of American Paintings, commented, “We were very pleased with today’s results, especially given the uncertain nature of the market. We set an artist record for Thomas Hart Benton’s Little Brown Jug as well as a record for Robert Henri’s popular portraits of children. We were fortunate this season to have a high-quality selection of property from estates and private collections that was extremely fresh. Many of the works had been off the market for several decades. That combination of freshness and quality sparked competition today and was the strength of our sale.”
