Peachy's Pantry: Pepquiño by KOPPERT CRESS USA. Our First Green Vegetable of Peachy's Pantry and We Love It!

If you don't know what a Pepquiño is, it is high time you learned!  The Pepquiño is certainly the tiniest watermelon in the world (1 inch long) and the flavor will remind you a sweet crunchy cucumber.  In fact, if you are as imaginative as Peachy Deegan, imagine Barbie having an outdoor barbecue.  The Pepquino would be perfect for her watermelon!   You can eat the whole fruit with the skin.  Peachy Deegan tried one for the first time at Star Chefs and was so pleased, the Whom You Know Panel has tried them!  We loved them.  Not only are they about the cutest edible item you have ever seen, they are a vegetable!  They are good for you!  And they are brought to you by Koppert Cress.

Koppert Cress BV started on July 1, 2002 in the Netherlands, after the company was purchased by Rob Baan.  In 1993 and 2001 the company received the prestigious AGF innovation award. This award, only handed out once every second year, was the right stimulant to continue with further developments. The company grew further and further and is now one of the leading horticultural companies in the world.

They proudly launched their first franchise in the USA in New York State in October 2006. Their Greenhouses are located on Long Island. The end-customers, the better cooks and chefs of the restaurants are the critical success factor of the company.  Their business emphasizes good partnership with the fruits and vegetables wholesalers. They order the fresh micro-vegetables, which they can receive daily all over the US. For them, the product disappears in a maze of hi-tech distribution, that can bring the product to Alaska or even to Hawaii.

The distributors provide Restaurants, Hotels, Caterers, Gourmet Markets and the various small fresh markets all over the world, including some of the most exclusive establishments in Manhattan.

The Whom You Know panel love love loves the Pepquino!
Here is what they had to say:

Cute isn't really a word that I would attach to vegetables but in the case of the Pepquino, I'd make that exception.  They're cute as a button and look just like mini-watermelons, or even green mini-footballs.  Texture-wise, they're just like cucumbers, actually when you bite into it, it looks just like the inside of a cucumber. Taste-wise, they're very mellow and refreshing, just like a cucumber is, but with a slight sour taste, almost like a very lightly and quickly picked cucumber.  They're great as a standalone and healthy snack, and also a great addition to salads or a vegetable stir-fry. Another plus is they're very easy to prepare, you can just rinse and toss into any dish, whether it's an appetizer, salad or a cooked entree.  Since they're tiny and bite-sized already, cutting and chopping is optional.  As a matter of fact, I'd leave them as-is, as I think they'd make any dish look that much the more visually unique and special.

Pepquino, has a very unique taste similar to a cucumber.  I think in the future I will try it in a dill dip.  The Pepquino has a satisfying crunchy taste.  It is also similar to a kumquat. The Pepquino has a great fresh cucumber taste and crunch.  When you bite into it, it's like a grape tomato with the squirt of tiny seeds, however the chewing is like a tasty cucumber.  It is a product of the USA however the origin is in South America.  The presentation of this micro-vegetable is very pleasing to the eye and palate.  All of my friends who tried the Pepquino were all quite delighted with this micro-vegetable.  Thank you Koppertcress and Peachy for this opportunity to experience this succulent micro-vegetable!

I received my "Pepquino" mini melons in the mail a few days ago. The Pepquino mico-vegetables (originating in South America), was a neat and interesting experience.  As per the directions, they did indeed taste like fresh cucumbers and I munched on these crunchy delightful treats.  I would recommend to be used in a variety of options: as a snack, a healthy appetizer, or as an ingredient
in any type of salad!  They are so cute and healthy!

Pequeno Perfection—Mini little cucumbers or tiny watermelons is what first came to mind when I opened the container. Crunchy, sweet and filled with delicious seeds so my first assessment was close. Truthfully, just plain delicious! I would enjoy them in a salad or chopped into tuna. But they probably deserve something far more extravagant. Definitely, in tuna tartare!

Pepquino arrived via FedEx, complete with an ice pack to ensure maximum freshness.  These originate in South America.  They are only available from April to November.  There is research showing these are related to the melon.  This micro-cumber actually looks like a tiny watermelon.  It is always a great idea to try new food and this was no exception.  I chopped up the pepquino and added it to my salad.  The color and texture complimented the presentation.  The taste is fresh and a little sour.  It reminded me of eating a cucumber, but with a much better taste.  I think it would make a fabulous presentation, chopped up on freshly cooked fish.  This is definitely worth a try, it adds a great look if preparing dinner for friends as they probably will not know what it is and with be intrigued and overall very satisfied with the fresh taste.
