TOP TEETH WITH DR. GARO NAZARIAN: Periodontal Disease

From our first Mover and Shaker on Whom You Know, Dr. Garo Nazarian of Cosmopolitan Dental:

Periodontitis or gum disease relates to the infections of the bone and gums that hold the teeth in place. If periodontal disease is not treated or controlled, the problems that relate to it may ultimately lead to tooth loss.  Prevention, is usually the first line of defense versus both periodontitis as well gingivitis (disease of the gums or periodontal disease in its earlier stage).  Good oral hygiene routine at home which includes twice a day brushing with fluoridated toothpaste as well as daily flossing are the key components to prevention. Eating a balanced diet and limiting unhealthy snacks are another component.

Finally, regular dental checkups and cleanings are important measures needed in the prevention of periodontitis.  It is important to see your primary care dentist should you notice any of the following warning signs: exposed tooth roots, changes in the way your teeth fit together upon biting, persistent bad breath or bad taste, red or swollen gums, and gums that bleed easily.  Often periodontitis is progressive and if left untreated can worsen
dramatically which is why it is imperative to visit your dentist on a regular basis to remove plaque and calculus in hard to reach areas of your mouth.
