Peachy Deegan says:

Pauline Olson of Farmington, Connecticut has been nominated through WHOM WE KNOW, Literally...Please consider voting for her!

Pauline Olsen
74 - Farmington , CT
"I am motivated by the obvious need to take care of people with no medical insurance rather than have them use the emergency department of area hospitals for their primary care. I am continually motivated by the benefit to our population from this free care; we've provided over 15,000 free visits and this number is growing rapidly."

Not satisfied with waiting for policy reform to address the problem of disparities in the access/delivery of primary healthcare in the Hartford region, the Malta House of Care (MHC) Mobile Free Medical Clinic was courageously created. Pauline Olsen, a retired obstetrician, has been instrumental in establishing the clinic and volunteers at nearly 90 percent of all available clinic days since it opened in 2006. Olsen's organization delivers totally free, primary health care to a diverse, multi-lingual, marginalized population with no other means of accessing the health care system.

Dr. Olsen's volunteer medical service responds to urgent community needs for access to/delivery of healthcare to a particularly vulnerable population in Hartford, CT, the 2nd poorest US city, with 30% of its population living below the poverty level; 3x the national rate. More than 125,000 lack medical insurance; and the infant mortality rate is nearly 2x the national figures. MHC is the only patient-centered medical home for 2,000 individuals burdened with previously undiagnosed illnesses like hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, asthma, breast cancer.

Dr. Olsen's mobile clinic provides free primary care, diagnostic testing, free pharmaceuticals to the sickest of the sick—80% of patients return to MHC acting as a safety net; the provider of last resort for ongoing treatment as their only medical home. The MHC van travels to patients in their own neighborhoods to serve them in an accessible, non-intimidating, respectful environment. Care is culturally competent with bi/multi-lingual staff to deliver appropriate, sensitive, and comprehensive care including pharmaceuticals all at no cost to those who cannot afford them. That's why Dr. Olsen is a 2010 Woman of Worth.
