"No one can fully appreciate the great fortune we have to be Americans without knowing the events that brought us to where we are today."
-- Lynne Cheney

In "A Time for Freedom" Mrs. Cheney takes the reader through a timeline of American history. Starting with migrants from Asia over 13,000 years ago and ending in the days after 9/11, this is quite the informative book. I really enjoyed reading about key events and historical figures in this journey through our history. The format of this book may be a bit tough for younger readers to digest, but if read with an adult, it can provide youngsters with a comprehensive background of the history of America. Filled with quotes, illustrations and tidbits of information, this book should be on the shelves of every family in America. It is a crime not to have basic knowledge of our country. It is never too late to learn! So whether this book is read by a school-aged child or an adult later in life, the most important thing is that it is read. So after getting yourself a copy, get a copy for someone you love and encourage them to do the same!

Lynne Cheney has done it again! Her campaign to enable our children to become interested in our history, American history, has been elevated once again! In her book, Time for Freedom, readers are offered important and interesting tidbits of American history for all ages to enjoy. The information is chronological and it helps to offer context, especially to our younger readers, to some of the times we are reading about! I also like that it isn't in a full-length story format. My family and I could pick up and leave off easily, which I found especially helpful so we could discuss what we were reading. We found many topics that we wanted to learn more about. And, I think that is what this book is all about. It is a great way to get your kids interested in history and then use this as a vehicle to get more in depth. Use this story to get your kids interested in American History...even from 13,000 years ago!

A Time for Freedom is best-selling author Lynne Cheney’s timeline of American history. Cheney does not shy away from the darker moments in our history, she paints an honest time line of what has occurred since our nation’s founding. She focuses not only on key political events like elections and laws, but also cultural and social milestones. On several instances I was moved to tears when reading what my fellow American’s have endured. Especially moving were the quotes from eyewitnesses and participants in these momentous events. As a history minor in college, I have read about these events many times, but the personal accounts show many of these events in a unique lights. It is truly amazing to see how our fellow Americans have worked so tirelessly to ensure our freedom and liberty. And that despite the vast differences throughout our nation’s history we have endured as a strong and free country. It fills me with great pride. Cheney has done a remarkable job and I can’t wait to add A Time for Freedom to my shelves.

As a teacher, I'm always looking for books to help me teach US History. History is a concept I have found that is harder for my students to grasp. Lynne Cheney's A Time for Freedom, is a wonderful book to help me with this. I use this book as a read aloud during our reading workshop time. I like that it is a chronological story from the arrival of the first Americans to present day. It is such an easy read. Ms. Cheney does such a wonderful job at making each stage of the book is very understandable, even for 3rd and 4th graders, when accompanied with supplemental instruction. I always like to read the books I read aloud to my students beforehand, and I found I couldn't put it down. Not only was this the perfect book to help supplement my teaching, it would also make a perfect gift for anyone who loves history. I know I plan to purchase one for a friend of mine who loves history.

TIME FOR FREEDOM is a wonderfully written book for those of us who want to brush up on our American history. It is a great resource to keep in your library. I love the timeline format it helps the reader follow multiple stories at once and understand the context. This book is great for those who want a good starting base for their American history. I think this book is great as a gift for those who want to dive into history or refresh their skills. It is very well written and hard to put down. I love any books that are quick and easy reads. "I offer this time line as a way of encouraging study of the past and I also hope it will spark conversation about what is truly important for us to know.... America is our home -- and how lucky we are that it is."

Did you know that John Adams thought we would celebrate America's birthday on the second of July? That ten generals went on to become president? That our country has had nine different capitals, including Trenton, New Jersey, and Annapolis, Maryland?

Bestselling author and historian Lynne Cheney takes readers through America's story of freedom in this time line of key moments in our history. Starting with our nation's beginnings and carrying through to events that affect our lives today, Mrs. Cheney enriches our understanding of defining moments by presenting them with facts that add perspective and by linking them with the historic words of men and women who were there.

Placing the important happenings and great figures of our history into context and showing the expansion of freedom in this land that we love, A Time for Freedom is a book families will cherish and want to share together.
