Redken Creative Consultant Guido styled two different ponytails for the Fall 2012 shows of the two fashion powerhouses Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein today, making for a very busy end to New York Fashion Week! The Ralph Lauren pony was soft, feminine, and refined; very simple, very classic and classic American. The Calvin Klein style, with its sleek, wet, glossy crown and dry textured ponytail seemed to echo the contrast in the collection itself. While it was inspired by a strong, powerful Bauhaus woman of the 1920s, the collection included many pieces with softer, ladylike silhouettes. Four of the models also had their hair cut into short, dark, flapper-style bobs by Guido backstage, adding a theatrical element to the show.

RALPH LAUREN

“What I love about Ralph is not having to change too every season. When it works, it works. It’s reassuring in that way as a designer and as a brand - he has a very strong identity. He’s not about reinventing everything – the inspiration for the girl is ‘she is who she is’ and I think that’s very nice.”

Create the Look:

1. Apply thickening lotion 06 to damp hair for extra body.

2. Blow dry hair using a large round brush.

3. Put hair up in pincurls which will give a rich finish to the final look.

4. Release pincurls and apply All Soft Argan-6 oil for shine and to smooth any frizz.

5. Brush hair back lightly with fingers to create a perfect low ponytail, a very rich look, securing it with an elastic.

6. Take a small piece of hair and wrap around elastic to cover.

7. Finish with fashion work 12 hairspray to tame any flyaway’s.

CALVIN KLEIN

“We love ponytails at Calvin Klein but this season we’re adding a little something extra – we’re contrasting textures from the crown and the actual ponytail for an added edge. We also created four stand-out cuts inspired by the 1920s on four models. Each of these girls has a slightly different, edgy cut with dark black hair based on a 20s flapper bob style – they are meant to be characters in the show.”

Redken Products:

-powder refresh 01 aerosol hair powder/dry shampoo (launches in salons March 1st- - see attached press)

Create the Look:

1. Create a deep left side part.

2. Layer in hardwear 16 gel from hairline to the nape of the neck – hair should be flat to the scalp.

3. Pull hair into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck.

4. Apply glass 01 smoothing serum all over the crown of the head for high shine.

5. Spray powder refresh 01 throughout the ponytail so there isn’t any shine, for a true contrast to the texture of the crown.
