Tiffany is the Creative Director and Founder of Designhype, a product design company which delights in the creation of playful, intelligent and useful objects. Her Metro Cuff Series as been sold, most notably in MoMA Design Stores, and published globally. The series materialized during her master’s thesis, where she explored the experience of comfort and security while women travel alone to all parts of the world.

We highly recommended her Tube bracelet:
& her Paris bracelet:

Tiffany sought to inspire women to have these experiences. Concepts for the NYC Metro Cuff, the first bracelet in the series, emerged from one woman's need for something less obvious than a fold out map of the metro system, which made her feel like a tourist in her own city. The series now includes NYC, London, Paris and Milan and will soon include Chicago. Tiffany’s experience also includes curriculum design, training and education. She spent over three years developing in-class and online curriculum, which she also taught and trained on, at Sweat Equity Education, whose focus was bringing the design process into the traditional classroom. Tiffany is also a design consultant for product and package design. She holds a Master of Industrial Design from Pratt Institute and a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design from The University of the Arts.

Peachy Deegan interviewed Tiffany Burnette for Whom You Know.

Peachy Deegan: How did you get the idea of wearing subway maps?
Tiffany Burnette: The idea for the first metro cuff began when I was working on my master's thesis, which was about traveling. The NYC Metro Cuff was inspired by the idea that you do not have to look like a tourist, or that you do not have to look like you don’t know where you are going, while traveling in a new city.

What is your first subway memory?
My first memory in a subway was in Philadelphia, which is where I grew up. I just remember feeling as if it were very dark and dank. It wasn't a pleasant experience and is not a pleasant memory.

What is your first jewelry memory?
I had a music box when I was a child. The kind that has a ballerina inside who turns when you open the box. That is my first memory of anything having to do with jewelry.

What subway would you most like to ride that you've never been on?
The Paris Metro! That will happen in a few months, I have been planning my first trip to Paris for late April.

What or who has had the most influence on your pursuit of excellence?
My father is an entrepreneur and my mother works with him. I think having grown up in that environment is what made me go out on my own in the first place, it is all I know and it is all that makes sense to me. They influence me everyday especially because of their knowledge of running a business. My professors and colleagues in my higher education experiences influenced and continue to influence me everyday. I am also my own worst critic, I think that I influence and push myself to do more and to keep moving forward.

What are you proudest of and why?
I am most proud of having the will and courage to do what I love no matter what anyone else thinks or says.

What is your favorite place to be in Manhattan?
Soho and Nolita are my favorite neighborhoods.

What is your favorite shop in Manhattan?
That is a really tough question but right now I'd say I have been window shopping at Pinkyotto on Prince Street just about everyday. Instead of displaying traditional female mannequins they use bear heads on human bodies, I really love them.

What is the funniest thing that has ever happened to you at a cocktail party?
Hmm, this is the hardest question yet. I don't think anything funny has happened to me at a cocktail party. Maybe I do not attend enough cocktail parties?

Who would you like to be for a day and why?
I would like to be Sir Isaac Newton for a day. He invented the color wheel in 1666. I would love to see what he saw and think what he thought. I would also like to be Charles Darwin, am I allowed to be two people for two days?

If you could have dinner with any person living or passed, who would it be and why?
My grandmother who passed away about ten years ago. She had such a beautiful and full-of-life spirit. She was never afraid of anything and lived everyday as if it were her last. She was creative also and I'd love to sit down with her and brainstorm a few ideas!

What has been your best Manhattan art or music experience?
The Tim Burton show at MoMA a few years ago. What an amazingly inspiring exhibit. You could see his progression from a young, aspiring artist to who he is today.

What do you personally do or what have you done to give back to the world?
I believe that everything we do impacts the world in either a negative, neutral or positive way. I am lucky to have been born with a positive outlook on life and I like to think that that positive energy brings more positive energy into the world.

Other than Rock Your Body of course, what is your favorite Whom You Know column and what do you like about it?
Amazing Accessories of course! I love learning about brands, products and the people behind them.

Have you drank The Peachy Deegan yet and if not, why not?
Not yet but I would like to try it. I am more of a beer drinker though so if you offer a Peachy Deegan IPA or The Peachy Wheaty I'm drinking it!

What else should Whom You Know readers know about you?
I write with my left hand but play ping pong with my right, which is to say I think I am left handed but maybe I'm just ambidextrous, what do you think?

How would you like to be contacted by Whom You Know readers?
You can email me if you'd like at tiffany@designhypeinc.com
